Good article, but I personally could have done without this:

In this situation, it's the parents who should be scolded for allowing the child the opportunity to dash away.
DS1 got away from me into the street once...he wrenched his hand free of mine, and dashed down the side of an apartment block. When I went after him, he bolted past me in the other direction - toward the street. I had my hand almost on him, and my foot went out from under me on the wet grass. By the time I was back on my feet, he was in the middle of the intersection, with a car stopped about two feet from him.

I didn't spank him - he never did it again, and I firmly believe it's because he understood how terrified I was. But, I dislike judgmental comments like the above. "Parents should be scolded"? Give it a rest - just more crap dumped on parents who are trying to do their best. I think this comment really took away from the anti-spanking message.

Good article, but I personally could have done without this:

I think the author was thinking more generally. I think she was referring to the parents who let their young ones run into the street while they are busy looking in the other direction. Sure, we all make mistakes, but yesterday a child ran in front of our car while my DH was driving. If we were going a tad faster, the child would have been hit.
In the situation which you described, clearly you are not to blame. I'm sure there are many instances when kids do run into the street and no one is to blame. But, there are also occasions where it's the parent's lack of supervision.
Anyways, after my husband slammed on the breaks after this kid had run out onto the street, he yelled out the window (to the mother, who clearly didn't mind that her son was almost hit by a car!), "Hey, kid take care of your mom, would ya!" ;)
