I am new to the Shreveport, La. area and I am wanting to find either a midwife or obgyn that will be open to doing a VBAC in a hospital setting.

I just moved from Shreveport to Little Rock. I am unexpectedly pregnant and planning my second VBAC and I wish I could've brought my OB with me! His name is Dr. Clint Cormier at the Women's Clinic. He was supportive, patient and very compassionate with providing for my care with my last pregnancy. I had an unmedicated VBAC at Highland Hospital. They are the best choice in the area for moms trying to achieve a certain birth. Shy away from Willis Knighton hospitals and docs. They have high induction and c/section rates. I think you will be very pleased with Dr. Cormier. If you are planning natural birth, I've heard he will only be on call with two other pro-natural birth docs. He may also extend this to VBAC so that you are more likely to get one of the more supportive docs.

He guaranteed to be there for my delivery 16 months ago, but back then he only had a small handful of patients like me! Since then we have flooded his office with referrals. A friend and I used to joke that we should get discounts off of our next births as finders fees! lol!

There are very few choices in Shreveport, unfortunately, but Dr. C and Highland Hospital are your best bets. Highland followed my birth plan to the letter. They are the only hospital in the area that does not have blanket policies (like continuous EFM) that they apply to every woman. They leave the decisions to each individual doctor.

Also, if you are looking for a great pediatrician, try Dr. Parker or Dr. Vaughn at Portico Pediatrics. They not only support breastfeeding, but their wives breastfed and practiced AP for their children (and Dr. Parker has 8!). It is really a great practice. Lots of my friends use them, and wouldn't you know I couldn't bring Dr. Parker with me when I moved, either.

My doula was Kris Harper, and she is also a CPM. She limits her doula clients, so if you need one call her right away. Her help during labor was invaluable! I also took Bradley classes to help with education on natural birth. There is an instructer in the area and she is great, also.

This is more info than you asked for, but I figured if you were new to the area you might want some of the other info also.

Do you know of those pedi's take medicaid? My son is seeing a dr already in Bossier city and he is okay. We can only change pedis for another few weeks.

I have heard that the office does not take medicaid, unfortunately. But I know of women involved with the local LLL group who have found good, supportive pediatricians that do take medicaid. I recommend joining their yahoo group and post the question there. I know they'll be happy to help!

I'm pretty sure Dr. Cormier's office accepts medicaid. Louisiana has a program called LAMoms that provides medicaid coverage for prenatal care/birth while pregnant. If you're kids are eligible, then chances are you will be, too, when you are pregnant.
