I saw my midwife today. She's wonderful. She delivered both of my girls, and the second was a waterbirth at the hospital. My only reservations stem from the fact that she is bound by the policies of the hospital (to a degree) but she really advocates for her patients and I have had two great experiences there.

Today things went well - she had trouble getting good heart tones because the baby kept kicking at the doppler. We talked about another waterbirth, and I asked her about the possibility of having older siblings at the birth. I didn't think it would go over so well, as it's a hospital, but she was all for it! She said she encourages older children to be there, if they are interested. She asked if my older daughter had seemed interested. It was Caitlyn's second question when she learned we were having another baby! "Can I come to the hospital with you to see the baby born this time, I don't want to stay home again." Tears to my eyes.

So we talked about it, and my midwife said we would need a designated caregiver for Caitlyn, and that the two of them would have to come to the hospital in advance for a sibling class, where they show all the rooms and machines and birthing tub and talk about babies and birthing and noises and blood and all that stuff. She said that kids usually do really well and that she would be thrilled to have Caitlyn there, if Caitlyn wants to come.

I am so excited about the possibility. I know Caitlyn would love to be included, and I think she would do great. She and my MIL have a wonderful relationship, and my MIL would be a perfect caregiver for her. They could come and go as they needed. Allison will be too young, IMO - she will have just turned two, and I think she'll be better at her grandma's house.

Now I just want to skip ahead to July!!!

Yeah! It sounds like you have a great hospital for birthing! The ones around me are horrible and notorious for being unfriendly for families. That's why I'm traveling almost 90 minutes to go to a birth center.

Sounds like you have a wonderful midwife!:love

I'm glad she's open minded about having siblings present and feels it's beneficial. My boys still talk about their sister's birth.:thumb It was an amazing experience for them.

Oh that is such great news Jessica!!!! I am not going to have Seth at the birth as he will also be just barely 2.
My sil is pg with #8 and one of her boys (he is 9) said to her, "Mom, this time you better wake me up, I want to see this baby born!". He doesn't realize that it is HER choice, not his! :lol

My kids aren't there yet. They're really little...I'm not sure if they'll grasp the concept. This will be another HB, and I'm starting to get fired up too!

That's really nice for your daughter. My only two cents - I thought my MIL was really going to be perfect, and although she was a wonderful companion for my son, it turns out I think she might have been either 1-too eager to see the birth to notice his subtle discomfort or 2-just not noticing his cues. He wasn't actually freaking out or crying, but I think the whole thing was just much more stressful than any of us expected it to be for him.

Have a great birth :-)
