so, my 2 1/2 year old decided to swallow a penny tonight. He is okay so far and is up, running, talking, eating and drinking. We talked to our nurse hotline, poison control and our ped. and ped. said that we needed to take him in for x-rays to make sure that it went all the way down and isn't in his tracia (sp?) somewere, were it could dislodge any time and choke him:(

I decided to stay home with ds #1, so that we weren't all sitting in the waiting room, but i'm going crazy here.
if it is not in his stomach, they are going to have to do something to get it out!!

if it is in his stomach, i'm going to be looking through poop for the next week waiting for it to come out!!

We have a PENNY!!!! Came out last night with no problems!!:thumb

DS is home and ok. we have an x-ray of the little bugger in his stomach. I'm so glad that it's there and that they didn't have to take it out of his throat!

I guess i'm going to have to buy a big box of rubber gloves for going through a couple days worth of poop:lol

Wow - sounds like a fun couple of days for you! Glad your ds is okay!

Instead of that, couldn't you just x-ray him in a week or two and see if it's gone or not? (maybe you avoid x-rays and wouldn't want to do that?) When me and my husband first met, he swallowed a penny. We never looked for it, but assume that it came out fine. I'm glad to hear that he's ok.

my dd also swallowed a quarter. this was when she was maybe 3? i never even had x-rays. just called the ped and he said they usually pass and that if anything was wrong we would KNOW.

I swallowed a penny when I was a little girl. My Mom had be use a training potty so it would be easy to check for it. When it came out it was sticking out so she didn't have to dig for it! TMI, sorry! Anyway, I was fine!

I guess the thing that we were worried about was the comment that it might not have gone all the way down and that it could dislodge and cut off his airway. I'm glad that we got the x-ray so we don't have to worry about him not being able to breath all of a sudden. I'd rather be in the ER for a not-quite-an-emergency situation than a my-child-can't-breath-and-could-be-dying situation. I normally HATE Drs. and usally take their advise with a grain of salt, but I felt that this was the best choice for us given the possibility of it not having gone all the way down.

It's okay tatgurl, onr time when I was three I managed to stick a whole piece of sidewalk chalk up my nose and I was fine. Kids do wierd stuff. He'll be fine. :love

tatgurl-
so glad he's ok, what a scare. I would have brought him to the ER to be sure, too. Hope you're all able to relax a little now...

I would have gone to the ER also. My last post was just an idea to avoid digging through poop for the next week. Now that you know it's not in his throat, couldn't it just be waited out or x-rayed later to check? Maybe it would make you feel better to know for sure that it's gone by seeing it yourself. Either way, I'm still glad that he's ok. :)

Happy to hear that it had gotten past the dangerous point. What a relief! Hoping it passes soon.
