My DH will be a first time daddy. He's been okay with the pregnancy so far; he's supportive of whatever I want to do. But I want him to be more involved and understanding of what I'm experiencing now and also be part of the decision making with regard to...IDK everything. I appreciate that he trusts me, but if we end up doing a homebirth (which is what I'm aiming for) I want him to understand the process and not just do something because the midwife or I ask him to not understanding fully why.

Are there any books geared just towards the dad-to-be that you recommend that helped your DH's?

Hi! My husband and I are both first-time parents. After reading "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" by Henci Bauer, I asked him to read it when he had questions/concerns. He enjoyed it! Not only b/c it was easy to read and answered all of the challenges he was having with a natural birth, but also b/c it was backed up with so much research & data.

If he can get past the title, I recommend it! LOL.

The Bradley Method's "husband-coached birth" is a good thing for fathers. I got involved with the classes so that my husband felt that he had a role in the birth process. We met once a week for 10 weeks. I think it was great for our marriage (we got married when I was 3 months pregnant and had only known each other for 6 months) to study birth together and go through the natural birth practices and massages together.

I did find one book just for soon-to-be dads called the Expectant Father...but the intro says "...the hospital is the most common place to give birth. It's also the safest." Well, that one's gone. I've been reading DH mobidity/mortality rates in hospitals vs homebirths/birthing centers and statistically the rate is lower in homebirths and he already agrees that makes perfect sense.

Hey Andrea, I JUST put the 'thinking woman's ..." book into my shopping basket on Amazon.

Mandi, I'll check out the one you mentioned as well.

Jumping in from Sept...

for our first dd, my dh read "the birth partner" by penny simkin and really enjoyed it. It's an excellent book. I found it on the required reading list for doula certification. Here's a link to it on amazon.

"Emergency Childbirth"
He essentially says that an eight year old can deliver a baby, and he's right. It'll really kick the fear out of first-time dads who are worried that you'll hemmorhage and die, or scared of the possibility of you going into labour out of hospital and giving birth on your own.
