Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Barb, mother to DJ (19 months) and due again July 28. I'm in metro Atlanta and hoping for a homebirth after a really bad hospital experience the last time!

I'm new to mdc in general. When I was pregnant with DJ, someone I knew from another forum sent me a link to an article on mdc and as I clicked around the site, I remember thinking "Yeah, she would hang out here!" but made a mental note that this site was pretty extreme and not for me. The other day, someone from another forum recommended the Finding Your Tribe forum to me and this time, as I clicked around the site, nothing seemed extreme, it all seemed pretty normal! So either they're watering down the site or I'm getting crunchier by the minute!

I look forward to getting to know all of you over the next few months!

Barb

So you're on #9? Any multiples or are they all singles? How much age difference is there? I think that's so cool...you so rarely see large families anymore! There's a woman not far from me who had 14 last I heard. I went to school with a few of the older ones and I remember that there was a big deal when the 14th was born while I was in high school. All of hers were singles. I lost touch with them after we graduated but I heard that she may have had more after I left town. I dated a guy (Catholic) who was one of 12, but it is very rare. I have the utmost respect for people who can do that...some days I think I want a big family but then some days I'm pulling my hair out with just one!

Welcome to MDC! There's lots of helpful info and some great women on these boards. I'm just a couple hours north of you on the Georgia side of Chattanooga! Small world. I was considering a home birth, but DH is a little nervous about it, so we're doing a birth center at least for the first one.

Chatanooga's great...I love the aquarium! We got married in Gatlinburg. DH is a little nervous about homebirth too but he knows that I feel very strongly about it so he's going along with it. We don't have any birthing centers in GA so it has to be either hospital or home. I had my first in the hospital and it was a HORRIBLE experience...they totally disregarded all of my wishes and every problem that DJ or I had can be directly traced back to their interventions. I tore pretty badly with him and I remember that while the OB was stitching me up I was grumbling that my next birth would be a homebirth. She just rolled her eyes and laughed. I made sure to send her a card letting her know that I was preggers again and having a homebirth this time, I'll definitely send her a birth announcement with a birth story attached!

Actually, I think that if a birthing center was an option here, I would probably go that route too. It stinks that we have a dumb law on the books that says that midwives can't practice unless they're certified and the state stopped doing certifications in 1978. So technically, homebirth midwives can be arrested for practicing medicine without a license. All the ones I've talked to so far have the parents sign a consent form saying that you understand that they're not licensed and that it's not legal for them to practice medicine and that's not what you're using them for. DUMB DUMB DUMB!! :)

Good luck and i look forward to getting to know you...it is a small world!
Barb :)

Barb - DH and I really like Chatty. It's a big enough city to quench my urban taste and our house is in an area that is remote enough to satisfy DH's country boy side! I knew it was hard to find homebirth MWs in GA, but I didn't realize the reason why. I have heard that legislation is going through to make it more accessible, hopefully it will go through. It is so hard to find naturally minded docs in the south. I'm originally from the midwest where it is much easier to find naturally focused people and docs (at least in the area I grew up).

Welcome! I am also enjoying my time here after a not-so-ideal hospital experience and looking forward to a birth center birth this summer. There is great info here and lots of support for natural birth!

They are all single. My girls are 12, 11, 9, 8 and my boys are 6, 4, 3 and 14 months. I don't know what I would do without all of them. :love
