Well to make a long story short, my baby got diagnosed with IUGR at 30 weeks. I am now 37 weeks and have BPP's twice a week and EFW u/s's once every 2 weeks. Baby was approx. 4lbs 12oz last week and my high risk doc said I will be induced at 38 weeks as the placenta has a higher chance of deteriorating after that point. I know the most important thing at this point is the health of the baby and it seems the docs think this is the best course of action. The only thing is is that I think this might be my last baby (#4) and I REALLY wanted to go into labor on my own. What would you do?

40 weeks is a term, I always thought there was a "chance" the placenta could start deteriorating after 42 weeks? Seems like if she is already very small, they would want to keep her in as long as possible. I personally would not let them induce me until later if need be, but you have to make that choice, just make sure you make an informed one! Good luck with whichever decision you make, and let us know! I wish you and your little one healthy vibes :)

Try PM'ing pamamidwife. She could really help you out. I wouldn't get induced. The whole placenta thing really isn't that true. Now, I'm not a pro on IGUR, but Pam can help you. :hug

Thank you both for replying!!
Well the keeping her in there until term thing was my first question. He, high risk doc, said that the amount of growth she would do after 38 weeks is minimal compared to the amount of weight she could put on on the "outside" and that term is 37 - 42 weeks. My next question was, what are the chances of a c-section if I wait, he said the chances go up everyday she stays in there if she isnt growing. So I just feel so torn on what to do. Dont get me wrong I want this whole pregnancy over sooner rather than later BUT I want her to be healthy more than anything.
I also forgot to add that I was induced with my last 2 kids at 43 weeks and 42 weeks and they were both healthy BIG babies, and labor wasnt as bad for me as it was with my 1st which I went natural for. I know Im being a whiner but I just want to do it all by myslef!!! ( I sound like my 3 yr old) lol

I'm sorry I know I shouldn't be in here because I'm not pregnant but...
what are you measuring as far as fundal height? do you have any recent belly pics? how sure are you about your due date? do you have high blood pressure? have you been sick or had other complications w/ this pregnancy?
(so sorry to bombard you but I think it's almost impossible for anyone here to give you solid advice on whether your doc is being overboard without knowing all the details!)

Hi Bri276
My fundal height measured 4 weeks over from 20 weeks on, and today measured 39, yes i have belly pics (very HUGE LOL), I was 100% sure of my LMP and u/s at 18 weeks confirmed dates, I had high-ish bp right around the time they diagnosed us with IUGR, and as far as other complications it was mostly simple minor things like extreme fatigue, high blood glucose (but i refused 3 hr test), severe headaches, not much morning sickness, but I lost almost 15lbs in first 6 months, totally unexplainable, I went to see a dietician who gave me a diet to try to follow to help myslef and my wee one to gain some weight and since then I have put on 13lbs. First time in my WHOLE life i have actually tried to gain instead of lose. lol
I hope I have given you enough info and if anyone can tell me how to post pics I will post most recent belly pic. :thumb

Can you get a 2nd opinion? I wouldn't consent to induction and definitely not c-section until you talk to another doc and/or a midwife.

Sorry too butt in, but popping over from the May DD boards :)
I went to a high risk specialist, because my blood pressure fluctuates pretty drastically. One of the first things he suggested was induction at 37 weeks, even though the BPP's come back fine, her growth is perfect, and nothing it wrong :angry
Correct me if I'm wrong..but isn't the point of all of those tests to check on the amniotic fluid levels..and the placenta, umbilical cord, etc? I'm not being snarky, it was the same question I threw at my doctor :lol he responded "well...yes. that is the point.." That being the case, if the placenta is not deteriorating, why the induction?
Like you, I also lost weight in the beginning of my pregnancy, 16lbs, actually. It's been slowly coming back up. Very slowly, but steadily. And now in the third trimester I'm finally starting to catch up a little.
Did they list your b/p as the causation for your IUGR?

I wouldn't get induced so early. He is telling you that your chances for c/s go up everyday? Well, they go up really high if you're induced, also. I would think that the chances to avoid c/s are better if you wait a little while. And, while the babe is in the womb, yes, weight gain does slow down a bit at the end, but it's still there. AND, while in the womb, baby's being taken care of the way nature intended. His oxygen and nutrition is being provided for him, his waste is being taken care of, he is being supported by mama.
I'd get a second opinion.
Oh, and I just realized I wrote that post saying, "he" and you mentioned "her"...sorry!

I wouldnt do it. I would def look for a second opinon....if your feeling movement and growing then the placenta is doing its job..why risk induction if nothing is going bad and only the chance of SOMETHING going wrong. I would stick to your guns for as long as possiable. 37 weeks is term in the sence that baby is fine to come then...but 40 weeks is full term. I think we as moms have accustomed ourselves to 37 weeks is term and its really not.
jsut my thoughts.

I'd get a second opinion, I am not an expert at IUGR however if there was not an immediate medical need to induce... I would not. They DO need the time to grow.
