Welcome to March. I thought it might be interesting for us to start off this month's thread by sharing what the best part about being pregnant is.

Honestly. At 16 weeks? Nothing. Not a thing. :( Still dealing with too much nausea and too much exhaustion. Can't yet feel the baby. Breasts enormous. Nothing good about it all -- except for knowing the little wombling is in there safe and sound of course...

So sorry that you are still feeling so sick. I hope it will pass soon.

The best part for me? Knowing that this babe is safe. I bled from 2dpo-16dpo and started p. I was so afraid of loosing this babe and just as afraid of getting attached. But, now at 17w, I feel more "in the clear" with this pregnancy.
And, I'm eagerly awaiting feeling movement everyday! I feel movement from time to time, but it can be days in between. :)

At 15 weeks the best past is knowing baby is safe inside :) I am passed the first few weeks of constant worry, I can now eat and am getting a small bit of energy back :)

The best part for me, so far, is entering the second trimester happy, healthy, secure, well-dressed and full of honest joy and love. I have never been this contented and joyful in my entire life.
Now that the nausea and exhaustion are over, and my belly is starting to show, and all the OB tests are coming out fine, and maternity clothes fit (and are on sale!), and that 13-week miscarriage line is past, and i've felt the tadpole wiggle a few times, I feel beautiful and radiant and full of energy. And appetite. :D Huzzah!

The best part this time is thinking of giving my DD a sibling and seeing her love up my belly and talk about the baby. It is just precious!:love

I'm not the crunchy, earth-mother type in the real world, but when I'm pregnant I get just totally Female. Something about fertility, I guess. Anyway, DH and I both find it rather funny.

KC, that's such an interesting self-observation. I was totally sure that I would get become earth-mother-more-female, but I haven't yet. I'm so sharp edged that I need a little softening up.
The best part for me started today. After 2 u/s and our tests, I'm convinced that our babe is healthy and I am healthy. When we found out I was pregnant, the docs found a 5 cm cyst on my right ovary. Today, at our 2nd u/s, it was down to 1.2 cm. Hooray.
We also found out we are going to have a girl!!!! I must admit that I'm relieved. I think I would be confused about a boy.

I am so gklad you feel this way. For what ever reason, pregnancy is hard for me. It was the first time 7 years ago too. But this feeling of contentment and joy is one I can relate to -- because my first 3 months post-partum with my son were exactly like this.
Good for you to be in such great shape and enjoying this!

ibex67, I love the term wombling! Haven't heard that before :)
I am loving that I haven't thrown up since I was 16 weeks (17 now) & am having much more energy, patience, & libido!
I can't wait to feel movement, but am not at all worried about wombling's well-being. I just have this sense that everything's okay in there & there's not a lot I can do to prevent anything from going wrong (except take care of myself).
Also loving the tenderness b/w DH & me (I wasn't 100% sure it would be there) :heartbeat

Pregnancy is REALLY hard on my body, I have Reynauds Syndrome and just moving is really hard (I have also just been afflicted with RLS, which I am managing with enourmous amounts of folate and hot baths before bed). I get aweful ms, and back pain early on and throughout from the relaxin. I am trying to enjoy what I can, but it is not easy. I think this will be my last baby. The part about pregnancy I like the best is that feeling you have the second after the baby is delivered and the pain stops and you see your baby for the first time, like eauphoria (sp?). I got so much energy from that one moment, I don't think I have ever felt better in my life, than I did in that moment, I hope I feel the same way with this little bean. :)

I will join the club of those of us for whom pregnancy is not a particularly wonderful time.
So what's the best part? (I will skip all the sh*tty ones for the sake of this thread)...getting belly rubs every night from my daughters. They have three different kinds of lotions/creams they choose from, they warm it up in their little sticky hands and then give their new baby sister (or so they think, won't know til next week) a little massage. It is often so tender it takes my breath away....
but I must add that it is 4 minutes of joy at the end of a frequently awful day. :(

Best Parts: I have boobs! Of a respectable size for the first time ever! My skin has cleared up, my hair is thicker and has a little more oomph, and I no longer have to listen to my Mom nag me about me about how I'm getting too old to start a family!
Of course, I have to focus on the positive after the hellish first trimester, and now that I'm feeling more like myself again, life is good.
I am especially enjoying this time when I have more energy, appetite and sex drive than I have had in months, and before I start showing and have a giant belly to navigate through life.

Hello everyone!
Happy March!
Best part, hmmm, that i can feel movement and last week I had an u/s and saw a wiggly little baby :) It was cute.
I am still dealing with really bad sciatica ( effects my walking, standing, etc..) but the nausea is fading and i am not as tired.
Now if i could get some sleep without dreaming like crazy, i would be VERY well rested, but alas, lots of dreaming is driving me insane!

The BEST part about being pregnant is: Not having to worry about getting pregnant!! I get pregnant REALLY easily (I mean, like, even trojans aren't keepin' those suckers out some of the time) so I was always scared of getting pregnant, and even more scared of getting pregnant and having a miscarraige, which is a horrible experience. I never knew that when we got pregnant with a healthy bean and got this far along we'd be so happy. :)
The worst part is: all the worrying about other stuff. Did I eat enough fruits this week? Did I take my prenatal vitamin? What did that little pulling sensation mean? Will I be a good mama? What the heck am I going to name another human being? What if this crib is too cheap to be safe? What if I'm not good at breastfeeding? La la la la la la la... The list of worries is endless, and I haven't even given birth yet (and I'm not even going to MENTION the list of worries about having to squeeze a 7-9 pound object out down there). No one ever told me I would worry so much.
lovencloth: You must be so strong to go through all that.
u rose: Congrats on your girl!! I hope I have a girl, but just my luck I'll have a boy and have absolutely no idea what to do with it. :lol

Can we talk baout sciatica?...does the pain really shoot down your leg? I have a terrible pain, pretty sharp, at the base of my spine...it's is absolutely debilitating but it doesn't "look" like sciatica looks when I see diagrams on the INternet...can someone help diagnose me?

The best part...I am totally floating. I'm happy, I've got my libido back, I've got really nice boobs, and my hair is thick and pretty. And I'm showing just a tiny bit...so maybe I'll have a super cute belly soon. But I'm still small enough to sleep on my tummy sometimes, and that's a nice feeling. I also like the feeling that the first trimester is over, so the baby is likely safe in there. What a relief!

well, I'm really not feeling the love with this pg yet, but I'd have to say the best part is how excited my 5yr old is. He gives the baby hugs and kisses all the time and talks about taking care of it when it's born. He even says that it's his baby!
Karma- I've had trouble with sciatica since HS. I went to a chiro for a long time for lower back pain and never got it diagnosed. I did some research years later, and found that sciatica problems can start in the lower back and as it gets worse it moves to your hip, then eventually down the back of your leg. I have a lot of trouble with it in my hips when I'm pg, and sometimes it gets to my legs near the end of the pg.
I've found that the more I walk, move, stretch the better it feels. It also feels worse in the morning, and I've found that if I put my weight on my foot a little differently it really helps me to walk through it.

03-02-2006, 11:34 PM
Last night while doing the cat stretch and my shirt was hanging, my toddler stretched underneath me and said "Look at mommy's big belly!" A week before while nursing before bed, he said "Why is mimi so big?" Although I'm not thrilled with bigger boobs, these comments are truely funny. Other than that, I'm trying to settle into the second trimester and relax that this baby is ok and sticking! I'm also glad I'm not sick anymore, although still tired. Oh yeah, and the best part are the few wiggles I've felt - can't wait for more regular ones though!:love

J is doing the cutest thing. She will do the sign for baby and then lift up my shirt and rub my belly. If I ask her where the baby, she points at my belly. Now, she has started kissing my belly because she wants to kiss the baby.

That is so adorable! I love toddlers! My sweetie has a three year old niece and she's always stating the obvious. She'll stand in the middle of the room and announce proudly- "I tooted!" or "I'm picking my nose!" Oh to be young and have no inhabitions...

Best thing about being pregnant...I can't think of a thing. I HATE being pregnant. At least I'm typing this from Hawai'i right now, but that has nothing to do with being pregnant. I think the best thing is finding out what drugs to take from all of you to combat morning sickness--which is the last thing I've ever wanted to do while pregnant. This pregnancy has been the pitts.

Just to chit chat... I had the weirdest dream last night! I dreamed that my husband and I were on our way to a family reunion, and when I woke up the morning of the festivities, my belly had popped! As in... from 16 week round bump to beach ball with an outie overnight. Whoa. And the second it happened, all my patience, happiness and friendliness went out the window. I turned into a raging banshee that could not stand to be touched.
So weird! But I was so excited about my belly.

Funny, I dreamed about the baby last night, too. A little bit of labor, mostly that I delivered a whopping 9.0 lb. baby boy. Weird that I knew his weight so precisely. But then, my last dream was about a tiny, underweight baby, so maybe I shouldn't read too much into it? LOL

Well, I'm on the fence about being pg. I guess to answer the question the best part for me is feeling movement. So far I've felt some small tickles but nothing consistent. I love that our 4yo is so excited. She climbs up on my lap and cuddles with me. When she hears my insides gurgling she says "The baby is burping at me" She talks all about what she's going to teach the baby and how she's going to help me take care of the baby.
On the other hand my last pg was really rough, bad results on genetic testing, bed rest, pre-e scares, water broke when I went to bed at 35 wks, induction, horrible labor, massive infection after birth which meant a week in the hosp with iv antibiotics, bf probs, etc...yeah. Going through all that again scares the daylights out of me.

Well, unbelievably after 4 straight months my nausea has dissapeared overnight. Actually it freaked me out a little. I'm still not showing and I don't feel the wombling yet and my breasts aren't as sore -- so I feel like I have no concrete evidence of his/her presence anymore!!!

Feeling fabulous and happy except for the painful festering pit of Hades that is my face. :( It reminds me of being 13 again-- gross hair, zitty red skin and extra super pudgy. I want to glow and have a big, round, firm belly, not just an exacerbated, flubby potbelly, dangit!
Attitude and general feeling is good, and I got my sense of smell back, I can feel tadpole gently nudging every couple of days, and the weather is completely perfect, so I can't really complain.

How is everyone feeling this week?
Fat. I have gained 11 lbs at 16 weeks. I just feel like eating CONSTANTLY. It is so annoying. I ate raisin toast and some tea first thing this morning, a cinnamon scone about an hour later (I know I should be eating protein that early but for some reason I can't stomach it that early) and cottage cheese and pineapple an hour after that. And it hasn't been that long from THAT snack and I'm starving. This goes on all day.
I'm hoping that as the weather warms up, I can take more walks and stop piling on the lbs.

I feel your pain...my hair? Disgusting. My face? I don't even want to talk about it. My body? Not cute and round yet, but thickening through the hips/waist. I'm still in the "is she just fat or pregnant" stage. Sigh.
But all in all, can't complain! I've been (knock wood) headache free for two days and the sun is shining today, so that's something!

YAY jesamin - hope whatever you're doing to keep the headaches at bay keeps working! :)
My face is a disaster too. It's so aggravating to me, because my skin has always been nice and it was great when I was pregnant with ds too. But, this time - wow! I have pink splotches on both cheeks not to mention the acne flare-ups from time to time.
I've actually been pretty good. Emotionally, I'm still struggling. Not with any one thing in particular - but just really emotional. I cry alot, get aggravated alot with dh. Ugh, this was over in the first tri with ds.
But, I'm looking so forward to the weekend. Gonna get started on my garden prep work!! :)

My acne is pretty bad too...and it hurts! My hair actually looks great though...go figure.
Overall I feel really good, but I'm worried that I haven't been gaining weight. I'm gaining inches, but I'm still the same weight, and I'm really eating plenty! So I don't get it, and it's concerning me.
OT...Steph, I'm so jealous...I decided not to do a garden this year since I won't really be able to harvest :( I'm doing big pots on my deck, and that's it.

That's me, too. DH actually said this week that my tummy's growing, but my waist is shrinking. He can SEE it? Yikes!
I've been nervously checking my weight chart, and it looks like I'm just on a slow creep - tenths of a pound a couple of times a week. It's just subtle enough that I don't notice it. Maybe you're doing the same thing?

Well, my big news is that I think my 2 year old has weaned!!! Oh my gosh! I never expected it to happen so soon, but he hasn't asked for a WEEK! He nursed the night we got to Hawaii, then never asked, even though he and I shared a bed the whole time there. I don't know if it's just the trip that made him change, or a change in my milk (I know it's still there, but maybe the m/s drugs make it taste different??), or maybe it was just his time to wean? We'll see now that we're home if this is permanent or not!! If it is, I'll guess I'll have to change my sig!

I'm just shocked since it's so close on the heels of his big brother who only weaned 4 months ago. I guess 2 years old is a good age, I just was not expecting it! So I'm surprised. But honestly it would be nice to have a break for a few months, and then only have to nurse 1 baby!

Congrats veganf. I imagine weaning must be a big milestone. :)
I've been feeling better, so I have been weaning off my m/s meds. I was down to just one at bedtime. I decided to skip it last night, and paid for it this morning.
I had a midwife appointment yesterday. Jocelyn still gets upset whenever the midwife touches me. I really want to help her get over this, especially as I want her at the birth.

Oh jeez ladies I bet all of your faces look like peaches and cream compared to mine. I still have scars from my late teens (I was a late bloomer). And it seems like ever since I started my 2nd tri, ance started piling up again and I can't stop it.
And I'm getting very belly heavy for my frame. I wasn't particularly spreading the word that I was pg, I don't want people to judge me at my super competitive school, and they are actually starting to guess on thier own. I keep doing yoga, so the rest of me is relatively thin, and then I have a gigantic gut. A little hard to hide. I mean, you can only wear peasant tops so many times in one week!!
We are going on our Mexican vacation in a week, and now that we are trying to save money for this and that for baby, we have barely any disposable vacation money. We originally (pre-pg) planned on just going down there and partying like rock stars, and now I kinda feel bad like my sweetie would have a more fun time there without fuddy-duddy, I-can't-drink-and-I'm-in-bed-by-9 me. If the plane tickets hadn't cost so much I would let him go ahead and take one of his friends. Oh well. I do need a vacation. I'm sure we all do. PG and cold grey rainy weather together makes you feel like poopy.

3_angels, don't you feel guilty/self-pitying for one minute!
You are going to have a great time! I mean, we went to Mexico for our honeymoon when I was unpregnant, and we still had the same problems. He wanted to be awake 1pm to 3am, while I wanted to be awake 7am to 9pm. He can drink all day and feel good, I get tipsy after 1 drink and sick after 2. I hate crowds and hollering and idiotic morons, he enjoys chilling at the bar. And we still had fun!! The sun, the beach, the pool, swimming with dolphins (our one splurge, about $30 each), the cheap movie tickets, the relaxation, the... um... privacy of your room's balcony :blush .
For us, it ended up giving us a great respite from the wedding frenzy. I took several books and magazines and spent my mornings alone by the beach or pool reading and just relaxing without worrying what he wanted. He spent his evenings watching TV and walking around, since we don't have TV and he likes to explore. During those wonderful middle hours when we were both awake, we were free to enjoy ourselves and eachother. And eat a lot.
You deserve this vacation, and you are going to have a great time loving your mate and quietly building your baby in the downtime. Good luck!

Had a major revelation today... pregnancy is like being 13 again!!!
No, seriously. Think about it.
1. Very confused, moody, full of raging hormones.
2. Skin and hair are grody, and no products can help.
3. Cramping, leg aches and back aches.
4. Weird food issues and bloating. (I was quite pudgy during puberty...)
5. Can't quite figure out what to wear and nothing seems to fit.
6. Insomnia and weird dreams.
My legs started aching today, and I was thinking of how much this reminds me of 7th grade. At least there aren't any bullies or geometry homework, eh? Or side ponytails. :lol

You know, week 16/17 is very strange to me. I worry that i'm not eating enough, that my belly isn't big or round enough, that I'm not feeling my baby enough, that i'm not getting enough proteing, that i'm sleeping on the wrong side...
I guess I miss feeling "obviously" pregnant. The nausea and food issues of the first trimester were really comforting in hindsight. Right now, I just feel completely normal but 10 pounds up and with bad skin. Until our u/s on the 21st, I'm just feeling in limbo.
I wonder... can a stethoscope pick up that little wobwobwob heartbeat yet? It would be great to be able to do a daily "Alright? Alright!" and know that all is well. Anybody else feeling that?

magpiedee, for some reason it hasn't bothered me that I'm not having any "symptoms" of pg (other than a little belly & huge boobs for me- a C cup for the first time!) & haven't felt movement yet. It has been a complete relief not to be nauseated & vomiting & not to need moer than 8 hours of sleep per night!
Yet I have this feeling of peace with my baby that the only thing I can do for it is take good care of myself... & if something's going to go wrong w/ baby there's absolutely nothing I can do about it. & I'm okay with that.
I don't think a steth can pick up baby's heartbeat at the stage we're at.
Wishing you peace as well :)

Ugh I feel, and look huge. All of my regualr shirts are too short. Everyone on the street knows I am pg by looking at me. There's a woman at work who's due in May and I'm bigger than she is :blush Granted this is my 3rd and her 1st but still. she has this cute little bump and I have this monster mound :lol
Other than feeling like a beached whale I'm doing great. Yesterday I felt a little kick for the first time. I'd been feeling wiggles but that was the first jab :love MY dh is very jelous he wants to feel too. I told him he could feel if he'd take on the rest of it, he'll just wait :wink
The ultrasound is Wednesday. I'm getting really excited. I want to know what this baby is now. I have no clear feelings, I keep flipping, boy, girl, boy, girl; which is odd becuase I knew what ds and dd both were a couple of months in and I had very little doubt that the u/s would back me up. Now I'm at a loss :mischief

Well, with all the recent contractions I don't feel safe and in the clear yet and I wish I could cause that is what I was so looking forward to about this stage in pregnancy. Having to have my feet up all the time is making me crazy and if one more person asks me why I am so pale...:angry I don't know why, ok?
But I almost don't feel ONE bad thing about pregnancy cause I am so ecstatic to be in this position.
Although when everyone talks about increased libido I feel like a bit of a freak cause I have had NONE since I got pregnant. I don't know if it is hormonal or psychological. I just can't take even 5 minutes away from thinking about my tummy and that obviously isn't much of a turn-on. Anyone know about this?
But I LOVE my belly and my breasts and the flutters and the anticipation of hopefully finding out the sex of the baby in a few weeks!
Overall, a stressful but WONDERFUL time!:love

I don't think it's abnormal at all. I have interest in sex about once every few weeks at 4am--then I have to decide whether to wake up my husband or not! Of course, if I tell him that I didn't wake him, he'd be furious!! LOL. It's not that I'm preoccupied with pregnancy, I just lose interest while pregnant, and my belly and back are uncomfortable and awkward it just makes sex annoying. :irked:

I feel EXACTLY the same way! And I have with every pregnancy. I just feel fat, not pregnant. I have finally started feeling the baby move and then in a few weeks an ultrasound and I'll start looking really pregnant soon after that... then the pregnancy seems more real.

Yet I have this feeling of peace with my baby that the only thing I can do for it is take good care of myself... & if something's going to go wrong w/ baby there's absolutely nothing I can do about it. & I'm okay with that.
I wish I had your serenity. I'm absolutely terrified that I'm going to do something to hurt my little bean. Take my dream, for example.
Last night I dreamt that I was at a cook-out with a bunch of my friends and one of my girlfriends asked if I wanted a glass of red wine. I said "I can't, I'm pregnant" to which she replied "Nonsence! In Europe they drink a glass every day that they're pregnant!" (Which is true for some I think.) And she poured me a glass. I reluctantly took a couple of sips and before I knew it, I had drank three glasses. (I miss my red wine.) Then I started flipping out at everyone saying "Why did you let me drink 3 glasses?" and then, to make matters worse, my high school sweetheart shows up with his lovely little trophy wife and thier daughter. (He's married to this rich, tall, georgeous, prissy sob and they just had a baby in January.) And he looks at me in disgust and says "You're pregnant AND drunk? God I'm so glad I didn't end up with YOU!" (We dated for four years and parted on BAD terms.) So that's it. Thaen I woke up. But not before being wreckless and humiliated. I also had another dream recently where someone slipped me acid and I was like "No! I'm pregnant!!!!", but we won't even get in to that one. :lol

Had an appt with doc today. Every time I go I am nervous that they won't be able to find the heart beat. But they found it again :) at 134 bpm. The little booger kept running away (swimming away?) from the little doppler thingie though. She said there was a ton of movement. Yeah for little bean!! Always reassuring to hear the heartbeat. I had my first baby dream the other night and it was a really good one! I'm kinda surprised, since all my dreams lately have been crazy, and mostly bad. But it was nice--I was playing with a kitten, and then all of a sudden I was holding my son, who had a full head of black hair and was named Toby (not likely--neither DH nor I am crazy about that name). But he was cute, and I was all loving on him, and it was really nice!
I feel better...I've been so worried about all the stuff surrounding this pg (quitting my job to be a SAHM, money, hs'ing our older DD) that I haven't been as excited as I should be.

The boy thing didn't work for me :blush But, one benefit during my pregnancy with ds is that my leg hair nearly stopped growing - I could literally go 2 weeks between shaving. And, that was really important when I was so big that I had to sit down in the shower to shave each time for fear I'd fall over if I tried to stand up and do it :lol

Last night I dreamed I had a c-section in Australia. I thought I was having triplets, but the doctor said his instinct told him to keeping fishing his hand around in there and found a fourth tiny baby. The first 3 were boys, the tiny one was a girl. They weighed 2 lbs. 6oz., 1 lb. 13oz, 1 lb. 12oz. and the tiny girl was 1lb. 3oz.
I was there with two scrapbooking friends. One of them had twin boys, and the other had quadruplet boys (but she was expecting 5, but one of the babies died). Then we all left our babies at the hospital and went out for pizza. I was still bleeding all over, but I was so happy to get out of the hospital and walk around.
Then the space shuttle crashed into a bridge above us.
Talk about bizarre....

No baby dreams for me yet. not even an inkling of intuition as to the gender or anything, but my DH surprised me yesterday by telling me about HIS baby dream! He dreamed we had a baby girl, and he couldn't remember much detail except he woke up feeling very positive about the pregnancy and the baby. He said it was the best he's felt about it so far.
Isn't that the best? Most of his experiences around little ones have been negative (he only sees them as screaming poopy germ vectors) so I'm so excited and happy he's having a positive dream! Hooray!

I'm really chuckling reading all our dreams and thoughts on fatness, etc! Pregnancy is such a radical transformation.
Last night I dreamed about my high school ex, too! He and I were married. We were bored with parenthood and needed a change. ;) So we convinced his mom to let us work in her baseball stadium concession stand. :flipped I was selling popcorn and loving it. No kids! Not pregnant! BTW in real life, my ex's mom is a sculptor. :)
In terms of largeness, I get just huge in pregnancy. I've already put on 20 pounds, at least! My husband's great about it. He just says I look more "womanly." But will say, I can't wait til after the pregnancy and I can lose, once and for all, the baby weight. ( Since this will probably be our last).
I've had to be on part-time bedrest because of preterm labor issues. The goal is to make sure I don't have to go on full bedrest. My mom and my DH (and some friends) are helping me do this. I just try to be much less active, keep my feet up. So far so good. :thumb
I haven't had any true baby dreams, yet. I only had one last time. But I do know it's a girl from the u/s.

My first pregnancy I'd gained about 3 pounds by 16 weeks.
My second pregnancy I'd gained nothing the first trimester, but then promptly gained 6 pounds in the first few weeks of the second trimester. (Around 5-6 months I remember I gained 10 pounds in 4 weeks!!)
And at 17 weeks this time I've gained 8 pounds! And I've been sicker than ever!
Everyone is sooo different. Yet in the end, all our babies will all be within a few pounds of each other!

Steph, glad to hear your latest appt went well!
Well, at my appt today (other than my u/s) we had a really nice chat with my doc. I am strep B positive (which sucks) but he's doing a wait and see approach on whether or not he'll recommend IV antibiotics during labor or not. He's going to re-test me at 37 weeks, and there are a bunch of risk factors like preterm labor and my water being broken for over 18 hours. If I test negative and only have one or two risk factors, he'll recommend against it, but even if he thinks I need it, he said we can just hook up my hep lock to an IV for 15 minutes for the antibiotic, and then I can be back in the water.
He also wants me to labor at home as long as possible (yes, this is an OB!!! Really!!! :lol ) so if that happens we may not have time for the IV anyway. I totally adore this doctor...he is really encouraging me with my plans for a natural, intervention free birth. I feel totally confident that I'll only end up with interventions if they are truly necessary, and that's a good feeling!

03-17-2006, 11:20 AM
Rebecca, it's silly that he is testing you at all at this point. GBS is a normal thing. Sometimes there is overgrowth and sometimes, not. If we were tested every time we went to the dr we would all test positive at least once. You can be positive the week before you deliver and be negative the day you do. And the opposite can happen too. The only time it is truly worth looking at is just before you go into labor.
There is also risk factors during labor. The time when you are at the biggest risk from problems is when your water has been broke for a long time or you have a long pushing phase. I've never heard of it causing ptl but I would like to do some research to find out more about it.
HTH you feel better about it.

Thanks...I'm not really upset about it, just irked that I may have to have the IV he promised me I wouldn't need.
Honestly, that's exactly what my doc said--30% of women will test positive at some point during their pg. He did the test along with a bunch of other tests, and isn't concerned about the positive at this point--he said it just tells him to test again later, basically. He gave me antibiotics, but that's because we both think I may have a bladder infection. Otherwise he wouldn't have bothered, but it's hurting when I pee. I've tried natural remedies, and unfortunately they aren't working :( I'm still trying though...I don't have to fill the scrip unless I want to.
The risk factors during labor are the main ones he's concerned about. Even if I test positive a week or two before I go into labor and have no risk factors, he isn't going to recommend I do the antibiotics during labor. The risk at that point is miniscule, in his words. The highest the risk is likely to get (with multiple risk factors such as you mentioned) is a 2% risk of the baby getting the strep. Of those 2%, 1-2% will get a sepsis infection in their lungs, so a total of about 1 in every 6000 babies. Even if I have multiple risk factors though, he will only recommend the IV--he won't put it in my chart at all if I decide not to have it, so I won't have to fight with the nurses. Did I say I :love my doctor???
The reason I'm not having an epidural is that I want to eliminate unnecessary risks, so if I have multiple risk factors when I go into labor I'll probably consent to the IV. It's a low risk, but I don't want my kid to be the one in 6000. Other than that, though, according to him I won't be getting an IV at all (thankfully!) He says there is no reason for it, and it will keep over-zealous nurses from giving me a shot of pitocin without my consent :mischief Besides, he said I can call him 10 times the day I'm in labor and he'll tell me when to go to the hospital if I can't figure it out on my own--he wants me at home as long as possible. Then we won't have time for the IV anyway (again, his words!).

Just wanted to say a quick Hi! I don't know why I haven't found this thread before! I have a 9 month old dd, Lilly Grace, and I am now (we think!!!) 20 weeks pregnant with Baby #2 (find out on Wed. what it is!! I am hoping for another girl, so keep your fingers crossed for me!) I have no idea how much I've gained or lost, I don't weigh myself, and ask the doctors not to weigh me, they have to weigh me though because I have a hard time gaining adequate weight and maintaining weight gain when pregnant. I still haven't had to pull out the maternity clothes yet, so who knows!

Not nfbmom...but my doc didn't say gbs causes anything...he just said if I happen to go into preterm labor that it makes my risk of transmitting it to the baby higher than if I go past at least 32 weeks.
yeah, it probably was silly to test me this early...I think he just wanted to get all my tests out of the way so I didn't have to do any later. He's not a big fan of tests, but there are some that are state mandated here (STD tests mostly).

Just out of curiosity... does anyone/everyone track their food intake, or have a meal schedule, or do you all just go with the moment?
I dont feel like i'm eating any more than normal, or more hungry than normal, and sometimes it makes me worry. I try to fill in the cracks with apples, pears, almonds... but I still follow my normal pattern of protein shake/whole grain breakfast, big lunch with meat and veggies, and a bowl of cereal and glass of OJ for dinner. I'm pretty sure that i'm getting about 2 extra glasses of milke a day at least. I guess as long as the OB isn't worried about my diet/weight gain, I shouldn't be?
I dunno... i've always struggled with my weight and was a chubby kid, and I don't want to undereat or overeat. I am definitely not "eating for two", nor have I had any inclination to do so.
Pregnancy is nothing like I thought it would be! :o

It sounds like you are eating a healthy, well-balanced diet. The whole "eating for 2" thing is a myth. I think as long as what you are putting in your body is healthy and you are eating when you are hungry then you are probably fine.
Also - I don't track.

I kept track last pregnancy because I got sent to the nutritionist! (I was severally underweight and had alot of issues with food in the past.) Keeping track, I think, is a personal decision. I'm not keeping track this time, nor do I plan on keeping track. I know when I need to eat, I'm paying attention to my hunger cues, and I am letting my body guide me. And I definitely know when I'm full!
I would just make sure you are drinking plenty of water, and eating a variety of foods, and making sure you are getting enough protein.
I eventually had to stop worrying about not gaining weight, and stop listening to the doctors, and voila, life was so much happier! Just trust yourself and your body, it is great prep for labor!!!!!

I am keeping track, I am following the Brewer diet (well trying there is way too much food for me) because of severve pre-e with my daughter, it lets me feel I am doing something. It also lets me see at a glance if I am pretty balanced during the week.

I am trying hard not to keep track but I used to have lots of eating issues, so it's hard not to. Plus I feel like this time around my thighs and butt went to the size I was at the end of my pregnancy with DD in the first trimester, which doesn't make me feel great. I'm probably most sensitive about that. Luckily I do think I have a pretty cute pregger belly and I was blessed to not get stretch marks last time around (hopefully I'm not jinxing myself!). I'm at 19 lb gain at 20+ weeks, which won't be that bad if I average a lb a week, I'm just not looking forward to gaining more than that. I just remember feeling so hot and heavy at the end last time, and that wasn't even a summer baby!

I don't keep track either, but I do work very hard in getting my calcium and protein each day. I figure the rest all works itself out because we do eat healthy anyway.

My midwife usually asks for a week's food log somewhere along the way, but this time I told her not to bother because of the morning sickness. But it's been better (though I still have an aversion to the majority of the healthy foods I eat when not pregnant); nevertheless, I'm back to keeping a daily record of my food intake on VegPeople.com in the Food Log section.
I didn't do it with pregnancy #2, I was just too busy taking care of a baby! But with my first pregnancy I kept a food diary with photos and daily thoughts. I should print it some day!

Well, I asked my OB and nurse the same question yesterday, and they said that with today's medical technology and ability to measure many aspects of the fetus and of my health, as long as the baby is right where it should be size-wise and I am not losing weight, they don't worry. And since tadpolette is right where she should be, and since all my vitals are fine, they say to keep up the good work. I like that answer!
It was so wonderful and reassuring to see tadpole on the ultrasound and actually see fingers and toes and ears and kidneys and the four chambers of the heart and the spine and the femurs and knees and the big ol' noggin. And we were excited to see the little girl parts, which were pretty clear, but the most exciting part was the arms waving around. We both are just amazed that... well, she's making choices. Doing things. She's an independent little creature making decisions to move this arm or that foot. We just broke into giggles and smiles whenever she wiggled. It was completely amazing, especially since we haven't seen her since 9 weeks, when she was just a 2.73cm bean with buds. And I was so uncomfortable with the wand of doom that I couldn't really appreciate it. This time, though, there was absolutely no discomfort from the machine or technician and I really enjoyed the experience thoroughly.
Woooooohoooooo tadpole!!! :love

Yep! My midwife kept trying to hear the heartbeat with the fetoscope yesterday, but as soon as she'd find it Shrimp would move away from her. Oh well!
She pretty much says the same thing about eating too, especially since it's my third time around: "I know you're doing your best." Shrimp was measuring right on date, my blood pressure was low as usual.
But is anyone else moody/emotional? I broke into tears during "Franklin and the Green Knight" when Franklin couldn't bring spring to Woodland!! :lol And then I was bawling while loading the dishwasher, tears dripping off my nose kind of crying, but no explanation there either!

It wasn't supposed to be a big deal. 4-month appointment this Monday, then schedule the sono sometime in the next month.
But we had this big snowstorm that made me cancel that appointment, and what with all the other stresses in life, suddenly rescheduling everything seemed a really HUGE deal.
I finally bit the bullet and called the office today. No biggie after all - we're scheduled for Apr. 5 (20.5 weeks). We'll do the sono and then the 4-month appt.
Don't really know why I got so worked up about it. Can I blame the hormones? :lol
Best news is the doc is only ordering a Level I scan. I'd thought she might do a Level II, as I've read it's standard for over-35 moms. But no, there's no reason to treat me like a high-risk patient, even though the "experts" say I am due to AMA (advanced maternal age - love the term! :lol ) I love my OB and her attitude!

I had my first second trimester dream last night...I dreamed I was in Hawaii and had an ultrasound, and it was almost as clear as a photograph, and the baby was SO CUTE, and right at the end, the baby turned around and the doctor looked away but the wand-thingie slipped down and I could see between the back of it's legs...and there were 2 "bits" visible, though since it wasn't a front view, I couldn't see a penis, but still, it was pretty clearly a boy. So at least it was really cute! I'll hang onto that image to keep me feeling positive about having another boy so I don't get too depressed when the time comes.

Wow, interesting! Hawaii connection, you're not planning on having an u/s (right?), but now's the time that a lot of your DDC peers are, such a different pregnancy (w/ all of the nausea) & wondering if that might indicate a girl. Oh, I can't wait to read your birth story to hear about Shrimp! :lol

Grouch, grouch, grouch. :irked:
Thanks to the wonderful world of insurance, I just had to see a brand new doc-in-the-box to get a second referral to the endocrinologist i've been seeing since August. They insisted on checking me out, and the PA smugly announced that I had a heart murmur and would require an EKG immediately in case bacteria from my teeth decides to vacation in my valves. WTF?
I see an (excellent) OB once a month and an (incredible) endocrinologist every 6 weeks, and no one else has ever heard this supposed murmur, which makes me doubt that a nurse i've never seen before can diagnose it in 5 minutes while she's watching the clock and insist I go have more tests and pay more money. They couldn't even write a referral without making mistakes-- they tried to send me to an endoscopist instead of the endocrinologist. Ugh.
My mom tells me that hypothyroidism sometimes comes with a harmless clicky in the heart, and so does pregnancy with the upped blood volume, so i'm definitely checking this out with my OB before running tests. I thought doctors weren't supposed to make pregnant people worry?
So i'm irritated and hungry and behind on work from my 2 hours at the doctor.
But hopefully my swappee will get her gift today, so that'll be nice. :innocent

Whoa, that's interesting, and scary. My husband and I had to go to a clinic to choose a PCC last time we got health insurance (silly, because there was only one doctor available where we went, so there was no "choice"). After the nurse and student took his history and did the physical, they called in the doctor because of a heart murmur they'd found. Well, he listened again and told them it wasn't a murmur but just a variation of normal, kind of like this "click" you're describing. So I'd definitely get another opinion by someone a bit more experienced before you get too anxious!
I hope it turns out okay!!

I've now had three dreams where my baby is premature by about 4-6 weeks. The first two, he was born at home. I didn't know I was in labor and he came really fast. The last time I was in the hospital and I was watching the Dr check him out. He had tubes and wires everywhere. He was absolutely fine and I kept thinking to myself the whole time that he is fine and I want to just take him home.
All three dreams were several days after I'd had him and the first two I was telling someone about the birth. In all three of him he was breathing fine, I just had to worry about keeping him warm and not tire him out. Oh, yeah, there was a worry in all of them about apnea.
It's probably due to having ptl problems but sometimes I worry it's a warning of things to come.

That is interesting. My dd was born 5 wks early and I had all kinds of dreams about her, but none that she would be early. It could just be you trying to work through the what ifs since you are having ptl.

Hi ladies. I'm mostly a lurker here, but thought I'd post b/c today we found out we are having a boy! I'm still in shock, really. My first born is a boy and he will be almost 9 when the baby is born. My other three are girls and I have been in such a "girl" mode.. girl toys, girl clothes... it's taking a while for "it's a boy!" to sink in. Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy (DH is ecstatic!) but I'm just having a hard time wrapping my brain around it!
I gave away all of my boy clothes a while back.. maybe I can get them back!
:wink
It's DH's turn to name the baby, and he wants to name the baby Seraphim. What do you guys think? The name means a lot to DH. But I'm just afraid it's too out there...

:champagne mat4mel!!! Very exciting news! I don't know what I think about Seraphim, I've never heard it before. How is it pronounced, what does it mean, where did your hubby come up w/ it? I do like unusual names & really like the names of your other kids :thumb
P.S. Where in PA are you?
