Hi,
I am working with a skilled OB/Maternal Fetal Medicine in NYC and have been informed that because I am carring twins the pregnancy is "high risk". I am scheduled for numerous ultrasounds, and a team of clinicians will be on hand at delivery, and the delivery will be highly medicalized because I am told that so many things can go wrong with twins.
Does anyone know an OB that is open to natural birthing of twins while having immediate access to technology/emergency intervention should it become necessary?
Thanks,
Deborah

I don't have any answer for your question, but I wanted to say that you might want to cross-post this in the New York Tribal Area (http://www.mothering.com/discussions/forumdisplay.php?f=82). You might get more info from the local mamas there. :thumb

Congratulations on the pregnancy! Hope you can find what you're looking for re: your birth experience!

Well, I'm in MI, so I can't really help you with any specific OB...

However, I want you to know that not all OBs are created equal. You might have to shop around to find a care provider that doesn't push medicalization of twins. They're out there--you'll just have to ask lots of questions.

I had twins 3 years ago in a free-standing birth center with certified professional midwives because I didn't want unecessary interventions. I was very comfortable with my holistic prenatal care. I had one ultrasound (my choice) during my entire pregnancy, and I carried my babies 40w2d and they both weighed over 8 lbs. The birth was incredible!!!!

Here's their birth story:

Obviously, I don't agree that all twin pregnancies have to be "high risk". I also don't believe all twins need to be induced before they're ready. If you're eating enough high-quality, fresh foods and getting 3500 calories/day and 120-150 grams of protein/day, you will have a better chance at having a healthy twin pregnancy.

Make sure you find a care provider that has skills and experience with breech babies, in case one of your twins decides to turn breech. Some doctors will automatically suggest a c-section with vertex/breech twins, but there is no research to support this protocol. Also, if you don't want an epidural--this is your choice. If an emergency becomes necessary, they can give you a spinal or put you under.

Good luck to you. I hope you can find what you're looking for.
