View Full Version : Remind me that weight gain is normal...

As of 5 weeks ago I had only put on about 3-4 pounds. In the last 5 weeks I've put on 7-8 more (for a total of 10-12 in the first 22 weeks). I know intellectually that this is perfectly normal (I eat well and walk everyday) but I'm so worried that I'm going to get "yelled at" by the midwife. This isn't in her character at all but during my last pregnancy I remember that awful month that I gained 8 pounds in four weeks and got a stern talking to from my OB. It's hard to get out of that medical mindset I guess. :crap

How is everyone else doing in the weight department? Emotionally, physically etc.

emotionally okay--i think i'm about 165-170 right now (i don't weigh myself often) but dreamed last night that a more accurate scale put me at 200. i've definitely gained more than the websites with photos of gorgeous women who are super thin but with a pregnant belly say i should, but i too am a healthy eater and regular exerciser. i'll post here to remind myself along with you that weight gain is normal for pregnancy:thumb !

I am fully expecting to gain about 50 lbs. However, in the first 20 wks I had only gained 10 lbs. and thought I may not be like everyone else in my family who gains lots of weight while PG (and also takes it off easily). However, in the last 2 wks I gained 5 more lbs ... surprising to me since it took 5 times that to gain that much before. Even though I'm expecting to gain a lot of weight, it is a little unnerving to see the scales creeping up on me! This is why I don't have a scale at home. I only weigh myself at appointments.

BTW, your weight gain sounds perfect!

Your weight gain sounds pretty good to me! At my 20 week appointment, I'd gained a total of 20 lbs, which for me (compared to last time) is hardly anything! I think as long as you're eating well and getting some exercise, you're going to be okay. Now I just need to take my own advice and try to get more exercise...

Still Snarky (I love that name!) I am right there with you on the weight gain. 12 lbs in the first 22 weeks. According to web md that's exactly right, if you care what they say! :eyesroll From now on apparently it's a pound a week.

Personally I am going by how I feel, though I do think I'm eating too much sugar. Trying to cut back on that :)

If it's any consolation, I've packed on 11 more pounds in the last 6 weeks, according to my midwife's scale. My home scale only says 7 lbs though LOL

Weight gain is important for baby's development (although that pan of brownies I scarfed last night, was more for mommy than baby)

I've gained 18 to 20lbs at 21 weeks. I'm feeling ok about it, but have my days when I feel sort of dumpy rather than fabulously pregnant, you know? But most of the time I have faith in how my body responds to pregnancy, and allow myself to eat/snack more even if I know I'm gaining a little more than the norm, if that's what I feel like my body wants. I try to make meals and snacks healthy, but sometimes I just follow the craving, I'm only human!

I also know from experience that I'll be able to lose the weight once my body is ready. I lost 20 lbs after my second child and it only took a two to three months, and I kept it off, maintaining my lowest weight since high school. So I am determined not to stress too much about gaining since I know I can lose it once I'm ready to be disciplined after baby is born.

My OB has been just fine with my weight gain. She says if I'm ok with it, she's ok with it. I guess I've been lucky - never had any negative comment in all of my pregnancies. I usually gain 35 to 45 lbs, and definitely have some big gaining months in there.

I think it sounds fine. I gained about 25 lbs with ds and I feel that this time I will probably go about the same, maybe a little more. One of mw's is pregnant and from what I hear she is a 60+ lb gainer with all her kids, so I think that mw's care, as long as you are gaining, it's somewhat steady and isn't a HUGE jump at any one time. If I were to gain a bunch in one week we would watch for the gestational diabetes, but as long as gain is fairly steady (or normal for me) then all is good.

Thanks guys, I knew you'd help me feel better! :hug I am no stranger to pregnancy weight gain; I put on about 50 pounds last time (25ish by this point) it's just the pace that upped all the sudden! I think I've just been having one of those "dumpy" feeling days that Carolyn was mentioning. :)

I'm right there with you, Celeste. I've been enjoying all the "you hardly look pregnant" chatter around me and I'd been telling people that I only gained 3-4lbs so far. That was until last week when I weighed myself and realised that its more like 10 lbs. Which is fine for nearly 23 weeks. Its just that I have never weighed this much before so its a bit of a shocker to me. I also feel guilty that for the last few nights I've been pushing aside my dinner in favor of eating half a dozen cookies. Its that kind of behavior that will sending the scale sailing up in numbers. :irked:

You look fantastic, from your pictures! I doubt you have anything to worry about!

I was just reading one of my old pregnancy books I got from my ob when I was pregnant with one of the other kiddos and I read that from around the end of the fourth month to the end of the fifth month (right where you are) is a huge period of growth for the baby. They nearly double their length and do double their weight. Granted, they don't gain enough weight to make us gain 8 lbs, but it helps explain our weight gain at that time.

I kept journals with my ds2 and ds3 and noted my weight and measurement around with them and at my four month appointment I had a 7 pound weight gain (mine was a month earlier than yours depending on how my appointments fell:lol ) with both of them. I also have a period later in the 3rd trimester where I gained 5 pounds in 2 weeks -- I'm just waiting for that one now. I'm so glad I kept those journals.

The typical rate of gain is 3 to 5 lbs in the first trimester, then 1 pound a week for the rest of the pregnancy, though in the last month many women stop gaining weight or lose weight. If you follow that, you are right on target. I'm at a 13 pound weight gain and I'll be 22 weeks tomorrow. I'm within a pound of where I was with ds2 and ds3, and within a half inch of girth around.:wink I guess that means that I only feel much bigger this time around.

When I went in for my appointment yesterday, I got quite the shock. I had weighed myself naked, at night, Tuesday night and I weighed 129.5 on my scale which is accurate. Then, when I got into the doctor I weighed 137lbs!!! I commented that their scale must weigh heavy because I had just weighed myself and I was nowhere near that. I went and peed in the cup and when I came back I mentioned to the nurse what I had weighed the night before. She asked me to step back on the scale to double check (they have new electronic scales and those darned things can be finicky) and sure enough, I only weighed 131 that time. That makes a 4 lb gain rather than a 9 lb gain. I'll take whatever weight I gain, but darn it, I want it to at least be correct.:lol

I know, I need this thread too. I have gained 19 lbs so far (24 weeks) and I am really frustrated by it. But, it's all for the baby right?!?!?

Same here...

Since I have been pregnant like *forever* I don't really mind. But I am another who is bigger than I have ever been.... I have gained about 15 pounds thus far. I am huge though... I have officially gained as much as I did with both of the boys, one that was 12 pounds at 35 weeks (only 3 1/2 pounds though) and the other which was about 6 pounds at 26 weeks. So, I just keep telling myself that it is because I don't work anymore, and I will have a bigger baby this time...

Good news though, DH finally felt baby kick last night. So baby is growing and healthy and VERY active on the inside...

I think I can trump you all! :flipped I've gained about 40 pounds at 23 weeks. I had lost a tonne of weight before I got preggers, but as soon as I was, I was tired, depressed and miserable, alternating with being in a lot of round ligament and now pubic bone pain, so needless to say I haven't been in the gym!

I'm just going to not worry about it. I'm 5'11" tall so I can carry a lot of weight and I figure if not now, then when? I've got the rest of my life to wear size 10. For now, I'm a XXL at Thyme. WAHOO! :Sheepish:

Wow Beth, good job growing that baby! Has this pregnancy been any different than your first? I applaud you on your attitude, you've inspired me to not be so hard on myself! :twothumbs

Hi!

Well, there's 2 beths, but I'm responding. :)

This pregnancy has been TOTALLY different. THe first time I was S-I-C-K all the time. i was on diclectin right up until Gabe was born. I puked EVERYWHERE! Out the window on the highway, in trash cans, in teh laundry room (but not in the washer! :) ), you name it.

This time no sickness. I've only been working 1/2 time so I wonder if that's why. But this time I had a bad bout of depression in the first trimester (can't wait for post-partum time...) and I've had a lot of pain and fatigue. Today was my last day of work b/c the depression started to come back and I thought, okay, that's it! I'm getting out of here. So between now and my due date, I'm going to be taking it easy a bit. Luckily I work at a school and my principal and vp's were okay with it and really supportive. We get a year maternity leave here at 70% pay or something like that so it won't break us financially either. i'm actually going to take the whole of next school year off to be with Pippa.

I think probably one reason I haven't beaten myself up *too* badly about hte weight is because compared to the depression, it's a non-issue! :)

Hope you all have a great week...I'm off for march break with my family so might not be able to check in until we get back. God bless! :)

I am 24 weeks and I weighed 141 at my appointment on Tuesday, so I have gained 16 pounds total. I was 135 at last month's appointment. But, I was quite happy to hear that because I have had no appetite and I have had to force myself to eat. I don't really feel like I've gained that much. It's all in my boobs and belly. My face has gotten a little fuller and butt a little bigger, but that's normal for me in the winter. I'm a landscape gardener and I don't work in the winter, so I usually get rounder. I am excited that spring is coming because I have cabin fever. I HATE exercising and I HATE going outside in the winter! I like to work hard outside, but not exercise for exercise sake. I need spring so I can get out and about!

I'm 20.5 weeks now and have gained 6 pounds so far. I'm waiting for that jump that I had with dc#1 in the 5th month. Although we all had some sort of gastroenteritis last week and I had to go to emergency for rehydration (this is the 2nd time in 5 weeks I've had to go for that!) because I was throwing up every hour. So I've been living off gatorade and applesauce for the past couple days. So I think I might have lost some weight this week. Weight gain has never been easy for me though. (Although it seems easier this time than last time. haha.)

My midwife congratulated me on my good weight gain today! I worried for nothing...as usual! :p
