Okay, I know it's still a little early - but dh and I always like to have a few picked out before the u/s. Here are ours:

Liliana Elise (Lily)

Nora Elise

Mariana Elaine

Miles Elliot

Eli Christopher

Ellis Lee (or Christopher)

With our last name probably Nora Elise sounds best and any of the boy's names.

Sean Francis

Hannah Jane

Kathryn Jane

Elizabeth?

Our last name is tough because it ends in a y. A lot of names we like rhyme.

Oooh, I've always liked Nora. Not common, but cute.

For us:

girl: Maia Anne (Anne after my husband's late grandmother)

boy: Nathan Michael or Nathan Martin ("Nate" for short. Haven't decided completely on the middle name. Michael just sounds better, but Martin was my husband's father's middle name as well as his grandfather's name.)

FYI, my husband's last name (which is what we give the kids) is very Irish and starts with "D".

We closed on a new house this week. THREE DAYS before closing, DH looks and me and says "you think we ought to start packing or anything?"

This kid's going to be lucky if he gets a name by kindergarten.

Though in fairness, for all the list-making I did with DD, her name ended up being a flash of inspiration that just "clicked". I imagine we'll be looking for the same thing this time around.

Well, I don't plan to commit to a name till I see Croissant but I have my top picks for a boy and a girl.
Aria Genevieve for a girl. My lifelong best friend's mom just died of cancer and the initials of the girl are that of my best friend, her mom and even the right initial for the last name.
Tarek Jacob for a boy. Tay for short. I really want names that have something to do with my heritage since my husband is 100% Austrian and that dwarfs out my three nationalities. Aria is Arabic and Italian for the World and a Song respectively and Genevieve is French for White Wave which reminds me of a really cool Sarah McLachlan song.
Tarek (or Tariq possibly) is Arabic for Morning Star and Jacob is my baby brother's name.
But I have a bunch I like.

I really like Fiona and Sylvia for girl names. I think Sophia (DD) and Sylvia would be nice but DH hates it. He doesn't love Fiona. We have no boy names. So basically, we're nowhere!

Ebba for a girl. Got nothing for a boy yet. Middle name will be my family name, last name is DH's family name. (Thankfully we don't have to come up with 2 names for each! So much easier to just come up with one we both like and agree on. :) )

Oh, and Ebba is derived from Eve, which means "life."

Last night I told hubby that I was really freaked out that we didn't have a boys name yet (we ALWAYS have named picked out by week 6), so we needed to sit down and figure out this baby's boy name! So here they are:

Aaralynn (means "with music") Theresa (my paternal grandmother's middle name)

Louis (My paternal grandfather's middle name) Amadeus (you know, as in Mozart!)

After we decided I looked at him and said, "Now I HOPE we're having twins - a girl and a boy - because I want to use both names!" He just laughed at me.:lol

All the names are great! Isn't it just fun and beautiful to name a child? I love the process. We don't write lists, but this time we did look at a name book of African names since DD's first name is Swahili for beautiful (Zuri). We found Adia, which is also Swahili and means Gift from God. And last night, DH thought Sky would be a lovely middle name. Adia Sky. I can't imagine a more perfect name! Now on to the boy's name! WE're really, really bad with boy's names. So I am impressed with everyone who has boys' names picked out. And they all seem so nice!

I can't find any name I like, I just find ones I don't like. My poor boyfriend keeps trying to make helpful suggestions- he's convinced it's a boy so he keeps coming up with boy names, and every time I shoot him down. His last name (which is to be bb's last name) is "Brown", and it's really no fun to pair anything with Brown. Our conversations sound like this:

Him, with hopeful grin on his face: "What about Aidan?"
Me, with scowl: "Too Sex-and-the-City!"
Him, back later with another hopeful grin: "What about Dylan?"
Me, with a bigger scowl: "Yuck! Too 90210!!!"

Poor guy. He just doesn't understand. I want a name that's different and means something. I'm greek, he's itallian and scottish, so I've looked at some of those names, but still, none I love. This is going to be a long drawn out process. :irked:

Oh I love Aidan too, although I did love Aidan on SATC so maybe that is why... our name also ends in a "en" noise so aidan then gets that double noise going which sounds bad, bummer.

DH and I don't agree much either he thinks all my names are too weird or hippy:
Girls: Sierra, Amelia, Chance, Fiona, Sage, Marti
Boys:Julian/Jules, Sebastion, Alexander although I would call him Xander, Cameron, Ethan, Lucas

I am a Jennifer though and I really don't want my child to be one of 5 in a class of 20+.

We HAD a girl name in mind as a back-up when we had Carter-that was Ava-but in two years' time it's climbed to #10 in the popularity rankings-so I am not so sure about that anymore. After searching for hours on the web I found one girl name I like:
Hermione (pronounced her-my-knee)
There's a Hermione on Harry Potter though, that's the one thing steering me away from it.

Ursula Rose
03-12-2006, 06:03 PM
I have major name anxiety. I'd say it is the most stressful thing for me so far.

The u/s guys said it was a girl. Here are our ideas:

Cosette Rose (Cosette was the heroine in Les Miserables and supposedly refers to victory of the people.)
Ananda Rose (Ananda was the Buddha's best friend)

Our boy names are:

Errol Damon
Raul Damon

Argh. What is there to say. I wish she would whisper to me. I'm listening. I guess it is because I just despise my own name so much that this is taking on this much significance and emotion. "Ursula" is my screen name. Rose is my real middle name.

There are a whole bunch of names that dh and I disagree on. Maybe you all could use them: Ursula, Hazel, Adelaide, etc.

SlingWearin'Mama

Thanx Veganf on the name compliments!

Ursula rose-I like Hazel a lot too!

Kara- Ava is my dd's name... so much for not being popular ugh! Although we have only run into one other Ava and she was 8 years old... So I don't know where they are all hiding!

3-angels- all i can think of is Harry potter when I hear tha name, sorry!

The naming process this time is working pretty much the same as last time:

1. I go through the baby name books for hours and pick out a long list of options for each sex
2. I give this list to DH and tell him to cross out any names he hates
3. DH returns the list five minutes later with every name crossed out but two

We are agreed in focusing on Gaelic/British isle names because our last name is Irish and I am half British. But I don't want anything too run-of-the-mill, and DH doesn't want anything too outlandish. It's all downhill from there!

We also have the same problem as a pp - last name ending in "Y" so any name with that ending sounds silly. That eliminates so many cool girl's names.

Here is our short list:
Boys: Logan or Corbin
Girls: Brynn, Nora, or Alana

Here is a partial list of names DH rejected, which you all are welcome to borrow because they are really great IMO! :)
Boys: Aidan, Cormac, Declan, Davin, Liam, Nolan
Girls: Aislinn, Anwen, Ceara, Michaela, Rhiannon, Tuala

My husband's last name is Irish ending in "Y" too. His background and my father's side are english, scottish, irish. My mother's is russian, latvian.

Aislinn was also on my girl's name list, but he didn't like it all that much, and it doesn't matter since we had a deal that I chose the first boy name and he chose the first girl name...as long as we didn't absolutely hate eachother's choices that is!

Our neighbor's youngest son is named Declan. What a wild child he is!

To whoever posted the name Nathaniel Jackson, I love it <bg>! My oldest is Nathaniel Lee.....and our last name is...you guessed it, lol...Jackson :-) We don't call him Nate though, he goes by Nathaniel.

We haven't decided on any definate names yet, but here are some of our choices:

Girl: Aubrey, Breanne, Maya, Paige & Kaitlyn...middle name I'd like to use Jane, which is my middle name, but I also like Ruth and Rose.

Boy: Colin, Connor, Caleb & Dylan....not sure on middle name for boy...maybe Timothy after dh? I'm not finished looking thru my book though, I think I got thru letter H, lol.

I am a Jennifer though and I really don't want my child to be one of 5 in a class of 20+.

:yeah: Hehehe, I'm a Jennifer too & have always warned my parents that they will probably hate their grandchildren's names after giving me something so damn common!!! The ironic thing is that THEIR names are Sue & Rick (along w/ everyone else in THEIR generation)!!!

The problem is- our fave boy name that we both agree on is Jacob & that's been in the top 5 for the last 10 years. ACK! :lol Someone else mentioned how hard it is to pick boy names & I COMPLETELY AGREE!!! Alternate boy names are Owen & Henry, but I dunno.

Our last name starts w/ an S & we really don't want too many S's in the first name for that reason.

I could go on forever w/ girl names... Taryn, Ingrid, Chiara (pronounced "Key-r-ah"), Teagan, Anja, Erin... :D

My first born is named Jacob (top name in my state for the year he was born - the popularity never occured to me). Surprisingly, there are no other Jacobs in his grade at all. In fact, I don't know of any other Jacobs in the school. (It's a small school.) I say if you like it, use it. And it's such a cool name. :D

In case anyone wants ideas, we went a little less common with the other two. The middle one is named Caelan (it really is a boy name!) It's listed as the scottish form of Nicholas in my baby name book. Our youngest is named Jonah.

For the new one, we haven't really discussed names. Dh is near impossible when it comes to that topic. He doesn't like anything. If this is another boy, we're really in trouble. *I* have been coming up with names though. Here are some of my top picks...

Girl:
Keira Leigh,
Katherine (Kate) Paige,
Maia Kate (not Katherine)
Paige Katherine
Freya
Talia
Piper
Autumn
Audrey

I want to use my mom's name in some form. Her name is Kathy Lee. So, unless I use Katherine/Kate as a first name, I'll either use that or Leigh for a middle name.

Boy:
Braden (spelling undecided)
Asher
Rory
Ian (my dh hates this though)
Tristan
Keegan
Tiernan

I haven't figured out any middle names for boys yet.

If it's a girl, I'm pretty sure it's a Katherine. Maybe Katherine Patricia.

Boy? Oh goodness...I hope it's a girl :lol I don't know about a first name, but middle name will probably be Riley. I was thinking about Riley for a first name, but I really don't like it with our last name.

DH is literally no help. He doesn't care as long as it isn't a name he hates, and we both like traditional names that aren't *too* common, so it's basically going to be me naming this child :irked: I'd prefer the child be named after someone in our family, but that may go out the window for the boy's name--I don't like most of the boys' names in my family!

Dena - we didn't think about popularity of names either when we named dd2. I really don't like trendy names, and I hadn't heard her name in a long time. Well, her name is Olivia which ended up #7 for that year. I was SO mad. WE found the name by watching an old Cosby show from the '80s. I had no idea it was so popular! Oh well.

Me too. Rob really wanted to do the jr. thing simply because he was named after his father. But I'm not really fond of the name, and I absolutely do not like naming after a parent (though his sister named their oldest after her husband, so I just keep my mouth shut!), so I convinced him to use it as a middle name instead. But talk about Irish, his middle name is Roy: Rob Roy! Heck, I may as well say the last name is Dougherty, since he's all over the web for his business, he wouldn't care, LOL!

I'm stuck on the boys names too! The girl's name was easy...almost too easy. I said, how about Stella, and my DH looked at me, and said, how'd you know? I said, how'd I know what? And he said, that was my dad's Mom's name! They like to do the family recycle name thing in his family, and I love the name regardless, so that was done.
Boys? So far we're thinking Emerson, Simon...er.....that's about it.
The middle name will probably be my last name unless it sounds better as a last name, and then DH's last name will be the middle name. So we only have to pick out one name. Whew!
Hoping I have a moment of inspiration in the coming months!!

With our dd, we had the name picked out by 18 weeks. We had 8 friends who had babies due between Feb '05 and Oct '05 with 4 being due before ours. We were hoping that they would not use our name. No one did although many other friends said that it was the name they had picked out for their babies. Her name is Megan Rebecca. It was the only choice for a girl since it was the only name we both liked. This time, we don't have a name yet at we are 21 weeks. I'll list my favorites and we'll see! :wink
Boys:
Levi
William
Isaiah
Ian
Joel
Girls:
Courtney
Felicity
Hannah
Michaela

We think we like Courtney Michaela for a girl but we don't have a pick for a boy. I like Hannah and Michaela but I have a sis Michaela and a SIL Hannah so I can't use them. Also, I have two sisters preparing to get pregnant and they say I can't use "their" names. Faith and Elizabeth and Eric.

Boys' names are so much harder for me. I like Ian (my grandpa, dad, and brother are all John and I think it would be cool to slip one into our family). Dh shot down Ian right off the bat. This time I'm waiting until after the u/s to even really start to think seriously about it.

So far this is what I like:

We named all of ours before we even knew what the sex was. River was River whether a boy or girl. She is River Arie. Zoe was Zoe, but if she was a boy, she was going to be Eli. She is Zoe Elyse.

This one is:
Hunter (obvious)
Arav (Hindi - peaceful)
Bayle (American? - beautiful)
McBride

I have a feeling it's a boy, but DH doesn't believe me. He thinks the estrogen level is going to be off the charts after this one. Either way, that's our choice in names for the third (4th for DH) and final edition to our clan. We named him/her over a year and a half ago.

why are boys names so dratted hard? i can come up with tons of dreamy girl names, no problem. we have nothing. my husband's last name is difficult and the baby will have my last name as their middle name, so it will be already be an L-L sound. I really love short to the point one-syllable names - Max, Jack, Drew but Jack has become so popular and I already have a Sophia. DH doesn't care for Max, but I'm hoping I can persuade him. For now, I'm just referring to baby Max and am hoping it will stick. :)

So, now that we know we're having a boy it's forced us to go through the book. We had a girls name preaty much set: Keita (key-ta).

As for our boys list. the list that we are giving to our family to keep them from making comments about names that we actually might use is:
Drew
River
Ewan
Ethan
Hunter

Our actual list is:
Kieran
Gavin
Liam
Nathan (we like Nate)

I am having a hard time too.
Dh wont even consider til we find out the sex :crossfing my big u/s is tomorrow so let's hope!

I love French girl's names too!!

my list includes
Audrey Clare and has for YEARS
Noelle - when i was a kid in school i wanted Noelle Aparis ( with appropriate accent marks- Christmas in Paris ) as a daughter's name
Nicole
Madeline - for YEARS too ( but DH says no it is too old, well i have a 62 y.o. friend named that coincidentally so i think that did it for him)

Also
Amelia
Mallory
Julia ( that one is a tie for #1 with audrey IMO )

Our rule for names is that it has to have more than 1 syllable. A mini-rule is that it cannot be shortened. Dh has a 3 syllable name and ALWAYS ONLY goes by the first syllable. He hates his full name. I get slightly annoyed at shortened names so that is how we came up with this rule. :lol

Our last name starts with a W and is a direction on a map :lol so we have to be selective. I always wanted to use my Grandma's middle name, Mae, but DH says that is out for obvious reasons. :( I think that even today's teenagers dont know who she is, so why worry about it for years from now when the teasing would begin, but... he says no...

I LOVE Daisy Mae- but DH says it is too hill-billy

I like Jane too,(even though it breaks the no one syllable names rule :lol ) but my mom says there used to be a doll like Barbie but a cowgirl named that :shrug I say SO what! :lol

I also would like to use Dale as a boy's middle name. We had a good friend pass away from a car wreck in 2001 named Dale. He performed our wedding ceremony. :)
I totally forgot about it when we gave DS his middle name ( which i no longer like) It just rolled off my tongue and we stuck with it. Jeremy Dale would have been good I think. Oh well.... no changing it now!

Or Isaac as a middle name. It has family significance to me. My grandparents last name is Isaacs. There are NO boys left in the family to carry on the Isaacs name :( so i think that is a close second :)

So anyway, i have very little prgress. Let's hope after tomorrow I can get somewhere! With DS it was getting down to the wire and we didnt know the sex. We found out at around 36-37 weeks. WHEW! Jeremy was the ONLY boy name we liked then, ( fits the rule :lol ) so if this baby is a boy I dont know what we will do!

sorry if i am rambling, i am tired! :lol

nighty night all!

:)

After searching for hours on the web I found one girl name I like:
Hermione (pronounced her-my-knee)
There's a Hermione on Harry Potter though, that's the one thing steering me away from it.

Although hers is actually Her My Oh Nee

subtle difference, but just wanted to point that out.

Who knows if those books will be popular by the time she is in school :shrug If you like it, use it! I had never heard it before the HP movies, but apparently it was around!

Hi Amy,

I LOVE Madeline & think it is a way cute little girl name. The only reason it's not #1 on our list is cause DH's aunt has a cat named Madeline & his whole family would think we were naming our child after the cat :p

Great boy names too... I actually think Isaac Dale sounds really good togeher. I love the idea of carrying on your grandparent's name & the name of your friend who died.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents!

Good luck! (We still haven't set anything in stone for us)

Hmmm... I wonder if we're going to be "one of those" couples who doesn't name their baby for a few days/weeks??? We're not finding out the sex, we're total procrastinators... hmmm....

I just had to dig up this thread because I thought of a name that I absolutly love but could never use. I was talking to my friend and talking about baby names. She reminded me of a name one of our co-performers daughters. I have always loved it but as she is the only one and I still run into them from time to time I could never use it.. but some one can snatch it up if you want.

Ozma

yes, it is from the 'Wizard of Oz' books but it was always such a beautiful name to me. And the character in the books that has that name is so good and kind.

So if anyone needs a girl name :p

Had to dig up this thread, cause DH asked me if I'd had any new ideas for names while we were out on a wal tonight.

So here's a bump :)

We're thinking Dominc for the boy, after dh's great grand father and if mystery baby is a girl Isabella, or Isabelle. If mystery baby is a boy at this point his name would be "hey you" :lol
