I've had terrible heartburn all day - blech! I don't remember having it this early with my first. My biggest problem seems to be drinking. I usually drink tons of tea and water, but just the thought of those is a huge turn off right now. I had some cocoa made with milk but am at a loss as to what else I can drink.

Milk and tums are the only things I can think of to help, but they seem completely useless today!

So let's hear your best heartburn remedies!

Dairy is what CAUSES my heartburn. As long as I stay away from that - I'm usually pretty good! Papaya enzymes or dried papaya are usually pretty good at helping heartburn. Oh yea, with dd2 the only time I got heartburn was when I was taking a certain kind of calcium supplement (can't remember what - sorry) and once I stopped taking it the heartburn went away. Good luck!

Dairy makes you feel better short term, but causes you to produce even more stomach acid which makes heartburn worse in the long run. I never had heartburn with baby #1, but boy did I get it in my third trimester with baby #2! And this time I swear it was one of my first 2 symptoms of pregnancy. But apparently my midwife was the same way! I didn't even know what heartburn was until baby #2, so I guess I'm lucky. But strangely enough, things that you'd think would make it worse, (like the spicy chick pea curry I'm eating as I type), actually make it feel better! Go figure! The thing that worked in the evening with baby #2 was a bowl of soy ice cream before bed, LOL! I don't even want to eat that this time around though.

I've had a few boughts of heartburn too :( I also didn't know what heartburn was until I was pg with #2 and I thought I was going to die.
My big tip is when you have heartburn don't drink a big glass of water. Everyimte I do my heartburn gets worse,.

I have found only one way to foil heartburn.... I eat my big meal at lunch and chase it with a couple of chewable Mylanta. That way, i'm sitting up all afternoon and moving around at work while it works its way down. When I get home, I have a bowl of cereal or some fruit or a waffle, mainly grazing, but nothing too heavy. If I eat something heavy, spicy or creamy within 4 hours of laying down, it's ragingaciddragonfire of the esophagus. And I have a hietal hernia, too, so... ugh.

To foil it during the day, I would suggest, again, the Mylanta or Maalox, which are on my OB's list for "okay for pregnant women". I also find chewing on something very bland, like crackers or bread, can help. And a brisk walk will bring up all those sticky, heartburny urps.

Hope you feel better! Heartburn is no fun. :irked:

Edit/ "Hearburn is now fun" is possibly the worst and least truthful sentence i've ever written. Sorry, y'all.

Heartburn is now fun. :irked:

It is? Guess I didn't get the memo! :lol

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I had never realized that dairy does more harm than good. :duh

Off to eat some crackers.....

I'm so glad it's not just me. I get heartburn after almost everything I eat. Sometimes so bad I get those little burp/pukey things. I know it's gross and it's making food so unpleasant cause I know what's coming next!

O! and stuff that won't cause heartburn! i had that real bad last night, i think it was from mashed potatoes. would putting papya fruit in a smoothie work?

im starving every 3 hours!!!

3 hours?! Wow, that's longer than I go without eating when I'm NOT pregnant. Try every 30 minutes! Or at least every 1 1/2 hours. I went 3 hours yesterday morning and felt sooo sick from waiting that long! But we were out and I didn't have any food with me.

more protein if you're hungry all the time. i think that has helped me alot - i'm starving, often!

raw unsalted almonds work great for me for heartburn. i never tried the papaya enzymes but hear they work really well too.

one problem though....when i try to eat meat i can only eat a couple bites then i get a sick feeling. i just can't eat alot of meat. which sucks cuz i love hamburgers and bacon, but i guess the baby doesn't huh? Ha Ha!

the protein idea is working for me. in the 1st trimester, i was never hungry. now i'm hungry all the time and body is telling me, "EAT MORE PROTEIN!"

My food aversions keep me from eating nuts and many beans, and whole grains and greens, which are normally my big protein staples. I'm eating chick peas and soy yogurt, and I put rice protein powder in my smoothies, and I can eat tofu cooked in asian dishes, but otherwise I still can't stomach much else sadly. It's healthier to eat smaller meals more often, so eating often doesn't bother me. But I wish I could eat most of my "normal" foods. This poor baby!

(First of all, apologies to veggies and vegans here... don't read! :innocent )

I'm having a similar problem-- body wants meat, mind wants meat, but i just can't stand the actual "taste" of meat. I can't even stand the smell of grilling meat. After 3 or 4 bites, I get grossed out, especially with chicken. But I sit there, grossed out, salivating, still wanting to stuff myself like Garfield with a lasagne. Blech.

The only way i've found to get the meat I need and want is to get spicy meat. Lamb pasanda, masaman shrimp, hibachi/teriyaki beef, spicy salmon from Boneheads, chicken spicy thai cashew stir fry, Fuddrucker's burger slathered in ketchup and squeeze cheese (only if i'm desperate). Garlic, curry, peppers. Cover up the meat taste, and you'll be fine. Sadly, the spices and garlic can be big, bad heartburn inducers. Irony!

Also, I start the day with a protein shake, and that seems to help. And don't forget cheese, dairy, nuts, beans and tofu have protein, too. Good luck!
