So 6 months ago my ds was too big for his clothies and was showing great progress in his potty training and then we went on vacation and let him use the damn disposies and it has all back fired since then. Three weeks ago after reading this months Mothering, I got us into a diaper service and a week to the day we started back with the cloth he began regularly using the potty again. All his idea!!! Two weeks to the day we began with the clothies again he began to poop in the potty. Now three weeks later he is wearing underpants and telling me every time he has to go, even outside of the home. Problem is he all of a sudden wont poop. He gets all wierd like and says "lets get out of here." So I offer him the cloth diapers he either refuses or puts them on but still wont poop. Then he cries and whines that his butte hurts and I don't know how to explain to him that if he would just poop it wouldn't hurt. Has anyone else had this issue and what did you do? Eventually he poops and it is not all hard and rocky like he has constipation or anything, he just seems scared to do it all of a sudden. I don't want to pressure him or traumatize him but, if he wont poop he will get sick. HELP!!!!

My son Joshua will be three in April. HE is great about peeing in toilet. The only diaper is at night now, even stays dry at naptime!
Anyway he will often go several days without pooping. Sometimes he will poop in the morning while still in bed and wearing his sposie. I wouldn't worry too much. Sometimes If I can just sit by the toilet and read a book he is more will ing to sit still and try to poop. Just an idea, he could be too impatient to wait on it to come. Hope things get better.

Hi ladies, The links I just posted are two recent threads on the subject of holding poop. I tried to go the natural route for a couple of months, but in the end I ended up giving my ds a perscription strenght laxative. I did so for a couple of weeks. The lax was orderless, so I added to something he was eating or drinking once a day for two weeks.

He has been off the lax for a couple of weeks now and he is not holding his poops to the extent that he did before. He will be three in April, but he is does not use the toilet yet. Up until this point I have used some genlte encouragement, but that is about it. I think I was doing too little in terms of talking about pooping/peeing. In the past couple of weeks, I have told him:

-he can use the toilet when HE is ready
-after I have a BM, I casually say something like "Wow I just pooped and boy do I feel better"
-when he poops, I say "Good for you and don't you feel better now?"

and I have given him:
-a new kid toilet seat (I discovered part of his problem was that he did not like the one he had already)
-I got the book What to Expect When You Use the Potty. We have a couple others that had no impact on him, but he seems to be really interested in this one.
-I also made a cool chart in the bathroom, so when he is ready he can put stickers on it and he will get a prize when the chart is filled.

He has been sitting on his toilet seat and carrying it around. He has been sitting on a step stool while I go to bathroom and pretending to wipe and flush. Both unprompted. He also grabbed his underwear and put them on over his pants and he also put them on his head.:LOL I guess in my son's case he had some fear that I was going to rush him into something or maybe I wasn't spending enough time talking about bodily functions.
For whatever reason, he is now pooping in his diaper again and he seems very interested in potty training. I guess now that I am am showing more interest in his bathroom stuff, he thinks it's cool.
