Big Sister/Brother books - Without bottles!

I have found two "your going to have a little brother/sister soon" books for toddlers and they both feature the big sister/brother helping out by holding the bottle for the newborn. Has anyone seen a book without that, or even better, featuring the newborn nursing, or even better than that, a tandem nursing theme?

Dr. Sears' book, "Baby on the Way" shows a nursing mother and explains that nursing is how babies get milk from their Mommy's breasts. No mention of bottles at all. I also think there is an Usborne book that has a nursing baby. Oh, and "And after that..." by Jeanne Ashbe has a great nursing picture in it :).

Have you ever heard of Usbourne Books? It's a home show thing, and it's all children'd books. I went to a conference a few weeks back, and a rep was there with a bunch of books. I had bought one called "Our New Baby", and was sooooooo happy to see that is shows the momma breastfeeding her baby!!:love And it was cheap, like $1.99:thumb

Joanna Cole's "When You Were Born" mentions bottles (as in "When you were a baby, you drink milk from your mother or from a bottle") but shows a nursing baby. It's a pretty detailed description of birth (i.e. mentions uterus and vagina) that's appropriate for a toddler (my 2.5 year old likes it).

Is the author of "Our New Baby" Wendy Cheyette Lewison? I searched on Amazon for it and that is what I came up with but it doesn't mention Usbourne Books as a publisher. Its hard to tell what its like on the inside but I do like that this one is a boardbook and is geared towards toddlers.

I might get the Sears book also but it says its for 4 years and up and discusses birth and pregnancy in lots of detail and I think that would be over Ruby's head. A lot of them seem to geared toward an older toddler. The Joanna Cole book is what they have at our daycare and the teacher told me Ruby was into it.

Thanks for the reminder Claudia, I might take you up on that! We are moving next Saturday and I thought I would take Ruby to the zoo while the movers get everything done. Come to think of it, ordering a book now would be dumb as it might not get here in time. I think I'll shelve this project till after the move!

Our ds likes "We Have a Baby" by Cathryn Falwell. It shows mom bf-ing the baby while toddler sits on her lap with a cup and cookie. It also shows the toddler helping care for the baby, but no bottles!

One of the Sears' books does show/mention a bottle but says something like "sometimes daddy might give some of mommy's milk to the baby in a bottle" - after all, sometimes that does happen! I think that's in the "What Baby Needs" book.

If I remember correctly, the book "My New Baby" (Kubler) doesn't show bottles. I might be wrong, though. It's a very pretty wordless book and shows the mother breastfeeding, one parent wearing the baby in a snugli-type carrier, and the dad changing diapers. The cover does show the baby being carried in an infant seat, but hey, like mommy milk in bottles, sometimes that happens!

My New Baby and the Sears books are the best I've found so far for being similar to how our family functions.


Oh...and the Sears books may say age 4 and up but the text is very simple. There are little marginal notes here and there that give ideas to parents for discussion. You don't have to read those along with the rest of the story. We read those books to Griff when he was 2.5 and they were perfect for him.

I've heard good things about the Mr. Rogers book... I picked up his book on potty training, and it was one of DS's favorites.

I ended up going with Jeanne Ashbe's And After That... and Cathryn Falwell's We Have A Baby. Both these had reviews that said they were good for young toddlers. I was concerned that some of the others would have too much detail.

"Breastmilk makes my tummy yummy" is a great book on kids nursing. i forget the author, but i'm almost positive it has a picture of tandem nursing. (i've only read it, we don't own it) it's not about being a big brother/sister, but *all* the pictures are of nursing babies of various ages.
