View Full Version : I'm not generally one to worry...

but I'm feeling a little off after having our ultrasound this afternoon. I tend to ramble, so I'll just list the facts:
- My midwife suggested the u/s place because they are more thorough than others in the area.
- Based on LMP, I am 18w1d and due 8/16. Due to my longer cycles, this was revised (by mw) to 17w3d and 8/21.
- Most of the bone measurements on the u/s seemed to hover around 17w2d and 17w3d.
- The tech had me empty my bladder to see if baby would change position, but it didn't.
- Before officially finishing, the tech showed the measurements/pics to a doctor.
- After she returned, she told us we should probably come back in a couple of weeks because some measurements are better to take at 20-21 weeks.
In my dreamy state, this sounded fine at the time. The more I think about it, though, the more I'm wondering if I should be concerned. Has anybody heard of that before or had to have another ultrasound around that time?
I know that u/s isn't the most accurate thing in the world, but, well... I just don't know.

I had my us today as well and we measured at 17w5d. The radiologist said nothing about needing to come back later. We were in there for an hour and the tech kept ramming that wand into my belly to try to get him to move so she could see everything she needed to. Annoying, but I think she was thorough at least. I also got told to get up and empty my full bladder to see if he would move. It seemed to take a lot longer than the one with dd, but then again - I am old now, at 36, and had a complete "genetic screening" with this u/s. I would assume if there were any problems noted, they would have suggest amnio. So don't worry!

I am in canada but our routine is done 18-20 weeks. My midwife has suggested that you wait till 20w 3d to get the best measurements as before that there are some things they can't see. I guess that backs up what they told you.

I wouldn't worry too much. You did say the babe wouldn't really move, so there may have been measurements that the tech thought weren't the most accurate because of babe's positioning.
Also, during our u/s with ds, one of the measurements of a ventricle in ds's brain was measuring on the "high" side of normal. The tech gave us no inkling of the finding, and I only later found out at my next office visit where they did a follow-up and everything measured just fine. I was a bit early then (17-ish weeks) and we followed up around 21-22 weeks.
So, possibly there were some questions about measurements, but at that stage, I wouldn't get too concerned.

I think this is a perfect example of the more tests we do, the more nervous we make ourselves for no reason! I am sure everything is fine and they just couldnt get all the measurements they wanted because the baby wouldnt move and they'll get them next time.
When I was pg with dd they had marked her heart measurements in the "abnormal" category, I was a nervous wreck! It turns out they just couldn't get a measurement on her and that was the only box to check. They had me come back in a few weeks, measured it and everything was fine.. It sounds like the same thing for you!
good luck and no worries!

I would chime in with the others, not to worry .... though I would have worried, too. I had an ultrasound this preg at 16 weeks 5 days. They could only get some of the measurements and wanted me back later -- so I'm going back next week (20 weeks). They could measure the heart and head, but other measurements, they couldn't get. I honestly wasn't worried and when I read the report, there was nothing untoward.
(This u/s my baby was moving, but I do recall in my last preg when Lulu wasn't moving during an u/s. I think they had me drink something or go to the bathroom.)

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! It was definitely reassuring to read them. I'm sure this kid is fine and won't waste any more time worrying. :)
