Hi Jessica,
Well, it really depends on what is causing the jaundice. The cause of jaundice can be from many things, however the most common causes of newborn jaundice will present from 24 hours following birth up to the first week, again, depending on the cause.
If the baby looks "yellow" before 24 hours it is important to call your doctor or midwife right away.
More typical is the physiological jaundice which occurs after the first couple of days. This kind of jaundice usually flushes out with a baby who is nursing well, but should be watched for improvement. Your care provider would be the best person to judge how severe the jaundice is.
jaundice may also be due to blood incompatibility. For example if the mother is of type O and the baby is of type A or B. This usually presents after the third day. Again, your care provider will be able to tell you if your baby is at risk for ABO incompatibility. Hope this answers your question.

like the other poster said it depends on the type of jaundice....
My daughter ended up back in the hosp at 3days old she had coombs direct our blood mixed durring birth i'm O+ and shes A+... her level was up to 22:eek . we had to endure a 2-3night stay in the hospital til her level went down enough for them to let us go home.
thankfully i had made a appt because i was having latching probs and brought up that she was supper yellow so they drew blood and called us saying we needed to rush her to the ER because her level was so high.
