I'm in Newark too. My husband's a grad student and I loved Newark before I had the baby. Now I feel pretty isolated here with only students for friends :( Oh well...one more year and then we're outta here!

Hi! I am in Wilmington, and always looking for Chicken Pox! I am fairly new to the area, and looking for a open minded gynecologist? I am done having babies, so I am not interested in the Birth Center.
QueeTheBean
01-11-2005, 06:02 PM
I go to the Birth Center for my regular GYN exams--always have. I was going there years before my babies were born & plan to continue now that I am also done having babies.
If you still aren't interested, I'll bet that someone there can recommend a good GYN for you!
GOod luck!

Laura,
I believe I may have met you back in December at the Newark Co-op. I was coming up on my due date and was with my husband. If it was you, you had Achintya in a maya sling and were helping me with Arnica.
I used Karen Webster and Christy Santoro as my midwives.
Does this ring a bell or am I totally offbase.
Either way, Hello!! I'm not far away and am in Newark all the time.

I go to The Birth Center also.
Meaning to get to the co-op for a while now... :bag:
I am also always looking for the chicken pox...so if anyone knows anyone, lets have a party!

I am a new member from delaware (wilmington-hockessin area, moved from newark recently, also a co-op shopper). I have a 5 yr old son and am expecting my second one coming June. Wouldn't it be good to get some of the similar aged kids together to play? It would also gives us an opprtunity to meet one another? My name is Deepa and my son is Arun.

Hey guys!!! I am from Southern Delaware :D I live near Rehoboth Beach. We need to find some more moms that are in southern Delaware. :thumb I have 3 kiddos Jessica(6), Chad(4) and Elizabeth(1). We will be trying next year for another one(unless I get preggo now). I have an awesome doctor down here that does all natural labors. I have even had 2 VBAC's and we are going to try for a home birth next time. I cloth dipaer, co-sleep, nurse my kiddos, positive parenting, etc. Let me know if you guys ever come down to the beach with your kids!!:)

Just wanted to let Delaware folks know that Nursing Mother's annual Parenting conference is coming up on March 19th. It is always a fun day & they have child care available, too. You can download the registration form on www.nursingmoms.org.
(By way of disclosure, I am involved with the conference, but I honestly do think it is a good thing to share with Mothering-types!)

Hi Jennifer
We made a few trips to the beach last summer and hope to make quite a few this year too. I'll let you know when we are there and maybe we can meet up.
A local get together will be great. How can we plan this?
Laura has already helped me a lot with a natural pregnancy so far (i thank her for giving me this exposure) and learning from her about her experience on cloth diapering together with other expectant and new moms will be good!

Hi midstreammama
Every cold day I hope it would be the last one this season, but it never seems to be. So, I agree. Instead of waiting for it to get warmer, why don't we all meet as soon as it is conevenient for all interested to attend. My son attends school between 9-12 noon weekdays. After 12 noon anytime would be fine with me. Thanks for showing such enthusiasm for this get together! I am also very eager to meet similar thinking people.

Where does you son go? My daughter used to go to a montessori school from 9-12am. Just wondering..whenever I see a set up like that I think..wow maybe they go to the same place. She goes there now, but all day kindergarten.
Well, first we have to figure out how many of us actually want to do this. So, I don't know how to go about that...I really don't want to wait until everyone finds the thread, that could take forever! ;) And i am Like you...I can't wait to see other moms like myself..lol.
I am so tired of the cold. It was bitter today! We went out to lucnch and I had 3 layers on! I am very cold natured though. So, let me know..
My email is Aspiringmidwife@comcast.net
Anyone can email me and tell me that they want to come just make sure you put something in the subject line about MDC and the DE thread or you'll get erased if I don't know who you are.

Hi midstreammama
I did not get your name anywhere so I am continuing to address you as above. My son goes to Newark Montessori Preschool on Rte 72 in Newark. He will also be starting first grade next year. Which Montessori does your daughter go to? What are your plans for her first grade?. Ofcourse we can discuss all this in detail when we meet. Let me know how the response is. Eager to see this idea kick off.

I hope I'm not hi-jacking the thread since I'm not actually in Delaware, BUT...
Jennifer ~ Can you please share the name of your Dr w/me? I live in O.C. and am desperately seeking a midwife (preferably) or doctor who fits my style. We're planning to get pg. w/#2 this year (my DD is 19 months and was delivered drug free and low-intervention w/a midwife in VA). Rehobeth isn't that far and since we just moved here, I'm up for any recommendations you're willing to share. TIA!

I'll pm you his name and number. He also has a nurse that is awesome!!! He is very gentle spoken and he is the type of doctor who like to have you help make the choices. I have had 2 natural VBAC's and even when the hospital wanted to schedule me another c-section, he made sure we wouldn't have to go through one. He is also a very strong believer of breastfeeding. He was the one that pushed me more when I was preggo with Chad to keep nursing Jessica. I will get everything for you and send you a pm.

A get-together! How exciting! I wish I could come, but today is the day I work an actual 8 hours in a row. Only (aproximately) 54 more days to worry about work! When this baby comes I am outta here! :bolt I tried to talk dh into bringing dd, but he already has a full day planned for them :)
I guess I should introduce myself, huh? My name is Shannon, I live in Bear w/ dh and dd (and one on the way!) We dream of moving to Newark, but everything is out of our price range :( We would love to be able to get around on foot. To get anywhere from our house we would have to walk along 40 (not exactly safe w/ a 2yo). I don't really like my neighborhood, but we are stuck here for a while.
We are most likely delivering this baby at St Francis. I am not thrilled about a hospital birth, but dh is not comfortable depleting our savings and committing to a payment plan to pay the midwife since we're about to reduce our income by almost half. He is so scared about taking this step anyway, asking him to spend more money is asking a lot. Anyway, any good St Francis birth experiences to share?
Wow, I am chatty today! One last thing .. who can help me find a ped? We had one for dd but I am not that attached to him. I would love to find a like-minded ped who takes my insurance (coventry).
That's all I can think of right now! Sorry this turned into my autobiography! I hope I can be in on the next get-together!

Dr. Joseph DiSanto, Brandywine Pediatrics...he's a great Ped, he works with the birth center. He may not be accepting new patients, if you beg and plead with his nurse, you may be able to get in. He is a MD, but doesn't snarl his nose if you use alternative, don't vax, etc. He's VERY SUPPORTIVE of BREASTFEEDING, his wife is a lactation consultant. His practice has a 95 % BF RATE!
IntoTheRoseGarden
04-06-2005, 01:39 PM
That sounds great!
According to our insurance website he is accepting new patients. I am calling right now! Thank you!
ETA: I called and he is only accepting families having their first babies. Do you know anything about the other providers in Brandywine Peds, Dr Gould and Dr Eng?
midstreammama
04-06-2005, 11:08 PM
Dr. gould is okay. My sil goes to him. He's the newest ped there. I use disanto, and only am able because he was my ped when I was a baby... :thumb
Have you asked if the birth center takes Coventry? I am thinking that they do....they accept most insurances.
Good luck on finding a ped. I would really try to stick with brandywine peds...but I am kinda biased. I have never gone anywhere else. Dr. Simonetti's daughter goes to my daughters school. She is really nice. Have a convo with her about vaxxing, and she seems to be pretty for it. I am pretty sure that she is pro-bf. That's about all I know.

I think I will try Gould, thanks for the advice!
The Birth Center would be absolutely ideal for us, and they do take our insurance, but they don't do VBAC at all. It is so frustrating; as if having a c/s wasn't bad enough, now it is limiting my options for all future births. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Hi Shannon! Have you checked out whether your insurance will cover a homebirth? Ours did, although when DH called on the phone and asked, they said they didn't think they would. We just had our midwives bill for an initial visit through their billing service and the insurance company payed up. Also, I'm trying to get some Delaware expecting mamas together for a Birthing from Within class/study group (free but informal). I really want to become a BFW mentor, but the mentoring workshop is right around my friend's due date and I don't want to miss her birth. There are two mom's interested right now and they're both due in the summer too. PM me if you want to join.

nolajen,
are you still in DE? where are you staying? i have inlaws in dover and a beach house in ocean city, MD just over the MD/ DE line.
sorry you had to evacuate. we had to leave the panhandle of FL last year for ivan scared us to death. one of the biggest reasons we left and moved to MD. unfortunately, now we are looking to move again, and i really want to go back to FL, despite all of the HUGE hurricanes this year.

danaalex,
Yep, still here! (Just got back from a trip to New England to visit family. Sorry so late to respond.) We're in Harrington for the most part, but also spending time in Bethany Beach. I love :heartbeat the shore in the off season. If we need to stay for an extended period we'll probably go down to the beach house. But I'm still in denial & hoping to get back to Nola soon.
Ivan was scary as heck & we had an absolute nightmare trying to evacuate for it last year. Glad we were able to get out smoothly this time though! But I don't blame you for wanting to go back to FL. There has to be some downside to living in paradise, right?
danaalex
10-11-2005, 11:42 PM
how long do you think you'll be in DE? depending on what we decide to do living wise in the next couple of weeks, perhaps we could meet up? if we decide to stay put we could go to my inlaws in dover and meet you somewhere around there, if you'd be interested.
hopefully we'll know what were doing in the next two weeks.
when we evacuated for ivan we left at 3am and headed south to orlando. it was actually a PERFECT evacuation no traffic and we got to play with mickey mouse and friends for 5 days. :)

Funny... I never even thought to come into this tribe!!!! I have used the tribes for getting into about our possible moves, but never for the state I live in. Duh! LOL
I am in Delaware... we have been at Dover AFB for 3yrs now but are moving to Wisconsin very soon. Wish I checked this forum sooner!
Oh and I go to the Birth Center for this pregnancy. They are seeing me for prenatals only. I am a VBAC so they will only do prenatals. I LOVE it there! I have homebirths but if I didn't I would be so sad that I couldn't stay there for my delivery.
I also have used Karen Webster for my last pregnancy... up till I decided to have a UC. I just love her to pieces too.

Hello everyone!
I am soo glad to see there are so many of you around me. I was starting to wonder that I wouldn't be able to talk to anyone outside of Baltimore. lol. I am in my 6th month with my 1st child and sooo excieted but also very scared and have tons of questions. I would like to try natural birth but am not sure since I wince when I get a paper cut!! and I also want to breastfeed--lots of questions there! I am also looking for low cost - yet good/healthy daycares where I can send my baby for 2 days a week starting in November. I hate the idea of daycare and my current job will allow me to work from home mostly so I guess 2 days is better then 5 right? I am also planning to deliver at Union Hospital....anyone deliver there? Is it a good ward?
eee! my excitement to find other DE moms just cannot be contained at the moment...I'm in Wilmington (city proper) with my soon-to-be five month old, Jonah Kai...married life, coupled with new babe, is utterly amazing and otherworldly, and would love to meet others in same position...have been a co-op member since before I was born, really...my family having joined during their incipience...and make it there about once a week, although distance calls us to Trader Joe's, or for folks interested in biodynamics, we head up to Kimberton, PA for our BD raw milk, cheese, homemade yada yada....long story short...I don't know if you all have gotten a play group together, but I would love to be involved...anything to cut myself loose from the computer and have some baby social time!
hope all is well with all babes and mamas...
best
Kyara and Jonah Kai
ok ok...I spoke too soon...I, too, love Karen and her homebirths are fantastic! Many friends of mine have used her, and she's worth any trouble in distance, cash, etc...I went to the Birth Center though, since this was my first and wanting a bit more of a structure...yet I use that term loosely...BC was fabulous and recommend ALL of the midwives there....And newmom06 if you have any questions about ANYTHING please don't hesitate to ask--I'll try to keep pontification to a minimum and sort through things with you...!
ok...I think that's it for my babble

dr gotthold is pretty great :) he is very pro breastfeeding, and was supportive on selective and delaying vaxing, but that was almost 5 yrs ago that we saw him.

hey I just found this site... I'm not exactly sure how but I'm here nontheless!
I am a sahm in North Wilmington, with a 2 3/4 yr old boy and a 4.5 month old little girl. Both of them were born at The Birth Center and I could not imagine going anywhere else! I am going there now on Thurs for a Mothers Again group if any of you are new moms again you are more than welcome to attend.
Anyway I'll be coming round more often to get involved and hopeully join in on the fun of meeting other moms with kids of the same age group
:wink
had my ds at the bc, and loved it! we actually go to "mom's group" every wed 1-3....didn't know about the mom again meeting, most likely because Im only mother to one, but aren't they wonderful?? we live moments away from the bc, so I make it a point to go every time--it really does the trick for both JK and I...also to extend the invite to all moms in the area, it's an open door, and at this point we're all ages! a nurse occassionaly comes and talks, addresses concerns, even going over infant CPR and choking scenarios...good stuff.
also, on the ped tip...we go to gotthold, and he's a great guy...kind of shady about denying/delaying vaxes, as we've had a huge debate here in our house and were looking to him to help....he totally pushed all vaxes, which made me kind of wary...in the end though, he is indeed supportive of what decisions you make, I just think maybe he wants to stay out of the middle of a husband and wife who can't make up their minds (ended up we're delaying until two) his partners are otherwise great, even dr scott who is so not my speed, but she's amazing with my son...
hope this helps! and maybe we should organize a play group date at a local park as the temps cool down?!?!
best to all

i'm new, too, and jumped in on this thread in hopes of finding some folks to hang baby style with....just out of curiousity, where are you having your babe? the birth center does do a new mom's group every wed 1-3, and moms who didn't have their kiddos there can still come....it's fabulous!

Nice to "meet" you! It took us a long time to conceive, so dh and I have been a bit nervous throughout the pregnancy. We decided on using Christiana Hosp. just in case there is an emergency. So far, our obstetrician has been very supportive of our birth plan, we have hired a doula, and are doing our best to become educated in the Bradley Method.
I didn't know that the Birth Center did programs for people who didn't use them. I will check it out. Thanks!

Hi all, I am new here. I am expecting my first child in April. I am receiving my prenatal care at the BC and I love it! It's great to see so many other moms who have been there. I live in Hockessin and have lived in NCCo DE my whole life.
Does anyone know if there are any diapering services in DE? I Googled and the closest seems to be in Philly.

Does anyone know if there are any diapering services in DE? I Googled and the closest seems to be in Philly.
