View Full Version : Bay Area Mamas?
Acumama

Hi there. Any moms on the boards from the Bay Area? Maybe not many because it's already a fairly supportive area to live in terms of AP lifestyle, so there's less desire to connect on the net. I still enjoy coming here: the moms, the info, and the round-the-clock hours. Anyway, it'd be fun to meet anyone from SF, the east bay, etc., who comes here to the Mothering boards. Off to eat turkey! :p

Well I am closer than most I'd say. I work in Santa Rosa and my DH grew up in Marin/San Francisco County, so we are not too far off. I live in West Sonoma County (full of AP types), so I am always a stones throw to another person in my area. But I do love the net still.
I know there are more Sonoma county Mamas from the last board, but haven't rounded them back up yet. Anyway, glad to meet you! What's your story? I am expecting #2 11/29 and have an almost 11 yo DD.
There was some talk about organizing a spring get together with other Mamas in the area. Maybe you will want to be a part of that? Might be a bit too far? Keep in touch!

Hi Acumama! I live and work in San Rafael, so we are not too far off. I have a 3 y.o. ds and a 9 y.o. stepdaughter. We've gone to Berkeley on occasion to the Lawrence Hall of Science and still want to go back and do Tilden Park and other stuff. Not to mention all the things to do in SF.

Hey Acumama. I guess it's been a while since you posted the message for bay area mom's but I just found it and wanted to say Hi. My husband, and 16 month old daughter live in W. Berkeley. Would love to be in touch.
Be well.

I lay my head in San Carlos but do most of my living in San Francisco (and often, Berkeley)! I'm part of the SF group of AP mamas that Oceanbaby belongs to, but we've had a hard time getting together lately. I'm also part of a San Mateo-based AP group that has tons of stuff scheduled every week.
I would love to get together with you and your babe or give you info on my other groups! I have a 22-mo daughter and a flexible schedule. Send me a PM if you're interested!
Peace,
Nicole

Dayna! I know, doesn't it seem just completely absurd that we belong to not one but TWO of the same mom groups and we've never met?!? My work-daycare schedule has left me out of most of the BACAPS meetings, and the San Francisco group seems to have lost its steam. I'm bummed! Maybe we should just plan a get together for ourselves and our babes one day soon! I'm going to redouble my efforts to make it to BACAPS playgroups, too -- I can always pull Jules out of daycare for a morning or afternoon. Are you planning to be at any of the upcoming events? Hope to meet you and babchen soon -- Peace, Nicole

Might I ask what SF group you're refering to? If it's the API group, it has most definately not lost any steam. Just this month, they're having weekly playgroups, a feild trip, a parenting workshop, a baby "shower," and a general meeting. Just FYI, in case you weren't aware of it. But maybe you're refering to a different SF group, and if so, my apologies. :-)
Does anyone know of any play groups in the east bay?

veganmama (Lauren) and I are planning to start a playgroup. We thought Totland park (Berkeley) or the park next to the library in Orinda might be good places to meet (open to other suggestions). Is anyone else interested? If so, please reply with a day and time that would work for you and where you would like to meet. Perhaps we could rotate the location to make it easier for everyone. Mon., Tue., and Wed. work best for me.

Hi everybody!
I was part of the SF group that I guess isn't meeting very much anymore. I've was out of the country for the summer and got back a month ago. We promptly moved to Ocean Beach (after looking for an apartment and going nuts for a while!!!). AHHHH!!!! Moving with a toddler is a @#@#$%#$#! So, if there are any of you around who would like to get together again, let me know and I can reactivate the Yahoo groups or add more people to it and maybe we can come up with a very simple plan for getting together. Even if we figure it out here on MDC. I really really was enjoying getting to know you women and would love to reconnect. And Dayna, I still have your book,"A Color of His Own" -- think of you every time I look at it (and I look at it with guilt that I haven't gotten it back to you yet!). I'd love to, at least, return your book so your little Shannon can enjoy it again! I hope all you moms are doing great and I'd love to see all of you and your babies - and would love to meet more moms!!!
Peace everybody!!!

Laura, email me! I can't PM you or email you.
I have to say the API-SF group really is alive and well and seems to be looking for a public transit friendly play ground which is just plain *great* for me. That hill six weeks post partum from a c-section just plain bites! But like I said they seem to be moving to a better one : D
I've been a member on and off since 2000 and it's still as active but it's not as huge. SF itself has emptied out a lot so a smaller group just goes hand in hand with that.

Hey Elizabeth!
I'm really interested in the API group that you wrote about. Is it still going every Tues 11-2? I went a long time ago when Ben was about 6mo - he's now 27 mos - I guess our babies are close in age? Anyway, how is this group now? I'm very interested in reconnecting with AP moms - and would really love to meet other mothering moms as well.
Well, gotta go as my boy is telling me to get off the the "comlutor"!:love

So the group is the one that Laura posted about. She should have the URL, or I can dig it up : )
I have to run. Annabelle wants to nurse on the couch!
I think I remember a baby Ben. Redish hair? Maybe brown clothing?

Uhhhh....
Well, it's at the corner of Fulton and Steiner : D
If you take the Bay Bridge over into the city you get off the Fell Street off ramp. As you go barreling up the hill you will want to turn right onto Steiner and follow it until you see a park. Look for parking, which could take a while.
Did I do okay with those directions? I don't own a car and have *never* driven in the city.
I might be a little late this week. I'll be the one in all black with a little girl more curls than Shirley Temple : )

What do you mean when you say it's a fairly supportive area for the AP lifestyle? Are there special organizations that support it in the area, or are you just talking about the general attitude? I am having a hard time finding any AP folks, and I live in the SF Bay Area (Richmond). Any links, phone numbers, etc. you could give would be great.

Elizabeth, if you're still reading this thread, I e-mailed you at the only address I could find for you, hope it was the right one.
The website for SF API is:
http://geocities.com/api_sf/api_sf.html
I found this:
API Silicon Valley
Marina Peregrino (408) 736-8126 marinamp@pacbell.net
at the API home page (http://attachmentparenting.org)
I know there's also a San Mateo Group, I saw contact info at the naturalchild.org site.
And a Contra Costa site:
http://www.babyknowsbest.com (I understand this isn't a very active group, but maybe w/ more people, there could be a greater interest.)
And finally, the TriCities (Fremont, Union City, Newark) AP (http://www.geocities.com/eastbayap/) Group.
HTHs someone!

Hello!
I just noticed this thread and see there are a couple of API-SF members here (Hi, Elizabeth! Hi, Laura!). Thought I'd just give out some info on the API group here in SF if anyone is interested in coming to a playgroup or meeting.
We meet on Tuesdays at Douglas park in Noe Valley from 12-3 pm. It's a nice playground with a good-sized field (along with the play structures/sand area), and lots of exploration potential for older kids. Also, blackberries to pick in late summer:)
The Monday playgroup meets from 9am-12 at Laurel Hill playground which is at Euclid and Collins. This location/time is new and not as well established/well attended yet. We're thinking of changing that location sometime this year.
We also have monthly potlucks at the rotating homes of members. The whole family is invited and we usually discuss a parenting topic. Typically, these fall on the 4th Saturdays of the month. This month's meeting is a picnic/swap day in Golden Gate Park on the 26th. We'll be bringing our children's old clothes/toys that we don't want and laying them out to exchange with each other. Anything that's leftover will be donated. This is agreat way to clean out your closets and toy boxes (how I'm going to negotiate this with my oldler dd I'm not sure yet--we have sooo many toys I'd love to see the last of!).
Anyway, I've been involved for a year now and it's really meant alot to me -- being able to meet up with like-minded families so regularly is wonderful!
If anyone would like more info on the playgroups or the potlucks, let me know. If you want to come to either of them you can email me directly at kateri@attbi.com

Hi. My friend and I were planning on going to the La Leche League conference this summer in SF with our 2 1/2 year olds and were hoping to find a babysitter/mother's helper who could occupy our girls for some of the time so we could actually go to some of the sessions. If anyone knows a responsible teenager, college student, or anyone else who might be willing to do this, please e-mail me at mirruch@comcast.net.
Sorry for posting out of my tribe but we figured MDC'ers would be a good place to try.

Hi SF Bay area mamas!
I am moving back to the area in September from NJ. We have been gone for 2 years and I can't wait tot get back:)
Kateri, I did a double-take when I read your post because I grew up playing at Douglas park. We lived on Castro and 28th when I was a kid. I was just out there in Feb and took my dd to Douglas park....talk about a trip down memory lane, I used to think those hills were so tall! My Mom and her friends started Noe Valley Nursery School hanging out in that park!
I will be living in N. Berkeley when I return to the area but maybe one day I will drop in on to one of your Tuesday groups:)
Anyway, I am hoping to get hooked up with some likeminded APish Moms when I return so i will keep checking in here.

AP Nanny available part-time in the East Bay
Hi!
I am an AP mom of 2 yr old girl, we practice AP (co-sleeping, gentle disipline, extended breastfeeding, cloth diapering...) and I am a Nanny looking for a family who needs (live-out) childcare in the San Leandro (or near by) area. My husband and I recently moved to San Leandro (I grew up in S.F).
I am a former Nursery School Teacher, have been a Nanny for many years, took Early Childhood Education classes at S.F. State, and I have excellent references. I can email my references and resume to anyone interested (my email address is listed below).
I really believe it is important for me to work with an AP family, I feel strongly about meeting the developmental and emotional needs of children and I feel Attachment Parenting naturally does this. I bring my daughter, Phoenix, with me to work, and working with an AP family (as I did with the last family I worked for) has so many benifits for the children I take care of, as well as my daughter.
Feel free to email me with any questions and for a copy of my resume and references at ccumusic@aol.com.
Peace,
Isa

Ooops, I posted this already in a different section of the board, meant to post it here. Bad noob. Here's what I got to say: http://www.caresquare.com/ it's basically a website that pairs parents and caregivers in the bay area, like an online referral/scheduling system, and you can search by the sitter's schedule which is great. It's very well designed and it's free. When I first moved to the area I did the high school, churches, craigslist... because I'm a single mom I devoted a lot of my time to finding a sitter, now all I have to do is click and it's been such a relief. That and not having to think about new places to search. Anyway, thought I'd pass it along for other bay area people, if you are on caresquare let me know so I can add you to my network.

Hi! Yeah, well, Alameda but I've lived in Oakland for awhile... we're planning another MDC meet up at little frog park in the temescal area of Oakland next month. Don't worry about your little one being too little--my youngest is now 5 months old, too.
I'll also bring my 3 year old and 6 year old boys since school will be out!

i'm new to the mom thing, and i'd love to meet some attachment parenting types in my area. I'm in Santa Rosa, and at home all day and eve with my 6 week old babe.
She is fabulous! And, I'd like to talk about kids and other hot topics with some other local parents.

hey formerluddite, I think we're planning on meeting up on june 22...
but we'll probably only be able to stay from 9:30-ish until 11:15-ish... because first son will have lego camp that day. It was really nice to meet some other mdc mamas, and it s was basically us at little frog (and the ambassador from planet X to Oakland...).
Oh, and I hear you about the WC situation, even the 'toilet' at big frog we seldom use because it is usually scary.

carmel 23 - sounds great!
soulyluna - i grew up in sonoma county...my parents still live there. my best friend lives there (and her Dh and her 6 month old) too and i'm sure would love to meet you. I know it's hard to meet AP types there. You should look up the Summerfield School "roots and shoots" program. It's great and you'll meet like minded moms there.

i'll put it on the calendar. is that a friday? i know we don't have any camp that week, so i think we'll be there.

The first time I saw that dude he was raging against the machine with sword in hand on telegraph....
I think that the creek may be off because of the water shortage--perhaps? It is all so from way out there (the water that is) but I just think dry means no water in creek. How simple of me though, eh?
Do y'all eat at Asmara a lot? We used to eat there at least once a week when we lived in Oakland... yum.
Yes, the 22nd is a Friday. We may make a visit to big frog park this week--possibly tomorrow or Wednesday.

we were at little frog this morning. no guy, no sword, dry creek.
the creek definitely goes on and off. i've seen it off when i get there at 9ish, then get turned on around 10.
we're too cheap to eat out much, haven't tried Asmara (or Red Sea, which is the one behind little frog). but Bakesale Betty... *drool*

I think we are moving the day to next week.
I'm needing to mellow out a bit this week. Being a mama of three has left me :dizzy: by the end of this week...
Next week looks much better from here... We can meet Monday, Wednesday or Friday... my favorite choice is Wednesday, June 27. 9:30--12 would work well for us...
I'm sorry to flake out and I hope that some folks can go tomorrow--and next week, too!
I'd really love to meet both you formerluddite and lunabelly--so please please please respond on the other thread so we can get everyone together and let me know your best date/time :o
