Hey, I know I saw more than 2 other people out there!

But HI! :wave

Jacksonville sounds central for us three, anyway!

There's an LLL meeting on Friday at 9 am at Our Savior Lutheran Church on 24...on the old stretch of 24 right near the new overpasses.

MonkeyBoys Mom

Can't go to the LLL meeting - I have to work. But next Friday (the 12th) is my last day, and after that I'll be in school M-Th... so Fridays are free! I'm so excited; I've wanted to go to a LLL meeting forever, but never been able to.

Awe, you girls make me miss that area! We lived in Surf City for a couple of years, then moved to New Bern for 4 years. Now we live in stinky Florida! I loved my LLL ladies in New Bern. I miss is so much! NC will always be my home...

did I kill this thread? if not, any of you have any advice on on base VS off base housing for a no vaxing, cloth diapering organnic type? I think it would be New River housing and we are looking at DH deploying sometime next year. Any advice would be appreciated.............

Also what is the music scene like down there?

I'm in duplin county but we go to the area frequently.

MonkeyBoys Mom
05-19-2006, 08:43 PM
I'm not sure about base stuff- I'm civilian, but I can assure you that you don't want to live in New River housing. are you going to be at lejeune or the airstation?

and the music scene isn't much (as in non exsistant unless you like cover bands) but we do get occasional stuff- wilmington is the closest place for live bands

I'll help the best I can, I grew up in this area so I suppose I could be rather helpful LOL

PS- Hi Laura! Its wino *snickers*

ColeysMama
05-19-2006, 08:55 PM
New River housing is all SNCO and officer, so if your DH is a good ole' junior enlisted like us, you'd be in TT (Tarawa Terrace) or Midway Park. They're okay. I'm not a fan of base housing just because I don't like sharing my back yard with 5 other families. A lot of military kids are brats.

If you can get into the new housing at TT, go for it. There's still the yard issue, but if that doesn't bother you, then whatever. And the new houses are really really nice. Much nicer than you could get for BAH unless your DH is a bit higher up the food chain. What rank is he, if you don't mind me asking?

DH is a active-duty Cpl and I'm a Cpl on terminal leave (finally!!!!), so I see everything from the junior perspective.

I don't know a single person who doesn't vax or uses cd, or... anything like that. No military people, anyway. But this is Redneck City, USA, so you are not going to find too many like-minded people. I didn't know one person who could qualify as crunchy until I found MDC. Again, this could depend on rank...

Thanks. He'll be stationed at Leguene but the only on base housing avalible now is at New River. Do you think it would be better to live out in town? That's what we do here and i love it, but he'll be deployed a lot more there and I'm wondering about pros and cons of each in that situation.

Marilyn, he's a Mustang Officer and I'm prior Navy so we've been on both sides.

Mommas, What things do you all like about the area? What are your favorite things to do with your kids? Are there good craft stores in the area? I'm addicted to scrapbooking/card making/origami and I have been known to quilt and cross-stitch on occassion and am currently trying to sew clothes for dd. Is there anything hard to get there I should be sure to bring with me?

is New Bern the closest LLL?

I'm a bit frazzled about the move, we were suppose to be here another year and I'm really not ready to leave but we have to or be seperated as a family which isn't really an option so finding some other crispy/crunchy moms would aleviate some of the stress I think

Thanks mommas

I honestly don't know all that much about base housing. I've only been in a couple of houses on base, they were both pretty small (NCO/SNCO housing). We've never lived on base, either...we've rented before and we own our house now. Anyway, I can't tell you much about base housing, good or bad! There certainly advantages to living on base during a deployment, but we've done three while living off base & it all works out.

As far as off base housing, are you looking to rent or buy? We love the area we are in (towards Richlands). It has a rural feel, although our road is getting more and more developed (but that's good for our property value, so we aren't complaining...we estimate that our house is worth about $40k more than when we bought it nearly 3 yrs ago). It is 13 miles for DH to get to work on New River and 20-30 minutes for me to get just about anywhere I want to go in Jacksonville. We go to Richlands (10 mins or so) for DD's tumbling classes at a great little dance studio...the owner is a MDC member & DD's teacher is awesome. I'm taking belly dance lessons there also. We're also 10 mins or so from the Bulk & More store where we buy free range organic eggs & non-homogenized milk. My friend across the street is thinking about homeschooling. Oh, and we're only 5 minutes from the airport which is so awesome when we're traveling!

What are you looking for in housing?

MovingMomma
05-21-2006, 12:26 PM
Oops, missed your last 2 posts when I wrote the last one...

Speaking for myself, I'm really not a base housing kind of gal, & that outweighs the benefits of living there during a deployment. If you do end up living off base, be sure to make an extra effort to make friends as soon as you get here. Make crunchy friends, make friends w/people in your DH's unit, and make friends who live near you. I had all three rolled into one with two friends during DH's last two deployments, and it helped so much. If you have small children, hire a lawn service while your DH is deployed. You'll have extra money from the deployment that will cover the costs. When DH was gone, his part of the grocery budget went to the lawn mowing service! :lol

There are several scrapbooking stores in the area. I'm not into that so much myself, but I know a lot of ladies are! There's a Hancock Fabrics & at least two quilt shops. There's a neat little yarn shop up in Richlands if you get into knitting/crocheting or anything.

There's an LLL group in Jacksonville! MonkeyBoys_Mom & I met there a couple of weeks ago. :)

I don't know about a community orchestra. I'm sure you could find a bluegrass group to play with if you are into that, though. ;)

Any chance your DH is EOD? Mine is & I'm wondering since all EOD officers are Mustangs.

wow- I really showed my civilian side- I thought you meant new river apartments, not new river the air station LOL!

I am partial to the swansboro side of town- close to the beach and right between jacksonville, new bern, and morehead city (all withing 30 mins) there is the LLL in jax and one in new bern (I'm going to try the new bern one soon)

violafemme - I'd live in town, but that's just me. I don't like the busyness/crowdedness of base housing. I like to be able to go out to my backyard and pretend I'm not in "oohrah land." I mean, I love the Corps and all, but in my 4 years, I never got into the whole "Marine 24/7" thing. I like to separate work and home, and it seems like living on base would make that difficult for me.

On an officer's salary, you could probably afford something nicer/more private out in town... shoot, we do it on a Cpl salary plus my GI Bill. Base housing around here, except for the new junior stuff, is not that great.

Don't know about musicians.

MovingMomma - where is this Bulk & More? I've never heard of it.

Not to hijack or anything, but is there anyone around here who could help me with sewing? I know MonkeyBoys Mom does some.... but I just got a sewing machine on eBay, and I have a dress pattern and some fabric, etc. It's a really simple pattern and I've done a bit of sewing before, so I don't think I'd have a problem with it, but I need to modify it to make it compatible with nursing. I have a general idea of how this would work, but would appreciate a helping hand, so if anyone is experienced in this sort of thing, let me know. In return, I can teach you some knitting, or hook you up with some of my fabulous home cooking (bread, jam, cookies, whatever - lately everyone's been getting bread & strawberry jam).

when its time I can help you find a place if you want- I used to work in the real estate feild and have some good contacts (and you can live on the beach for apprx 900-1200 a mth in emerald isle)

marilyn If you can wait until next week I'll come and help you with that-I'll be outta town until then. I owe you for the knitting lesson LOL

Bulk & More is on Fountaintown, off 111 past the airport. I posted details (directions, hours, some prices) on this (http://mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=442695) thread the other day.

I'm no expert seamstress, but I did modify a pattern to sew a nursing dress the summer before last. I think I can still remember how I did it! ;)

ColeysMama

Melissa - that would be great. You don't "owe" me anything, though. I do want to get started on it this week, but with school and everything, I doubt I'll have time. I'll let you know what's up.

Shannon - aaah, now I don't know whose offer to accept. But since you've done this specific thing before, I'm inclined to ask for your help. Or you could both hook me up - Melissa with the general sewing and Shannon with the nursing bits. However we can work it out is fine with me. I'm just afraid of messing it up!

ETA: Or, maybe we could make it a group thing - you could both come over, we could have some lunch, y'all could help me figure out the dress...

Marilyn: What type of nursing opening are you doing? What style of dress & type of fabric? A group thing sounds like fun!

Shannon - it's just.. um... how to describe it...? Long, short-sleeved, really simple dress. Zipper in the back. It has princess seams, so I thought I could do the openings along the seams by leaving a length of them open, then cutting a duplicate of the front of the dress - well, not so long, but ykwim - and attaching it at the top and sides... does this make sense? It makes more sense when you see it.

The fabric is a lightweight 100% cotton. Very soft and very pretty - cream background with dark pink and blue flowers.

ETA: http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M8107.htm?tab=dresses&page=4 That's the pattern. I'm doing the longer version - on the right, where it shows all the versions, mine is the bottom left one.

LLL meeting on Friday, June 2nd at 9 am. I'll be there! Anyone else?

Marilyn: I did my dress with the short "doubled" layer underneath w/one opening in the center. I modified the top layer to add nursing access on both sides by extending the arm holes in the front.

Click here (http://www.motherwear.com/openings/index.cfm?op=1) and click forward a few to "single center openings." This is very similar, except my top layer tapers in to the side seam under the opening.

It's not permanent! As they build more of the new houses, they're moving people out of the old ones. Don't know how long it's supposed to take, though.

nope not permanent but sure does feel that way we are not supposed to move till well 2008 and that is when hubbies next EAS is. funny how that works. They keep telling us that noone new is getting the new housing well bullpoo I have met several people that moved right into new housing. we have black mold in ours and my two kids have mayjor breathing problems not to mention i do and we ahve no money to move. so is the life in the military but that is our life i guess. Anyway onto better topics i would love to plan a get together sometime. any ideas on what we could do with little budget and stuff.

Also was wondering if anyone could make a carrier for a 20 month old I somehow lost mine and really miss wearing him. i would get the material or payfor all of it labor included unless you would like to trade that for babysitting sometime for a date night or just time to your self thanks in advance either way

Krystal - this in in J-ville. You'll be on 24 heading towards Swansboro/Lejeune. It is actually about a mile from the front gate of Lejeune. On your left, you'll see a Coastal Dry Cleaner's, then a street, then a Blockbuster video place. That street is Corbett St. Turn onto it and keep going; the park is about a half-mile down. It's fairly big, on both sides of the street. I've never actually been there, just driven past about a hundred times (my babysitter lives half a block away)... I think the right side has picnic areas.

Oh, yeah, Corbett St is directly across from Tarawa Terrace, if that helps.

ETA: Friday is good for me, but I can't do anything that involves even the slightest amount of money - the next month or so is going to be tight beyond belief.

So who's in? Shannon? Melissa, are you around?

I looked under the featured forums this month and it had to do with wetbags and they said something about dollar tree has anyone been to one and seen them there. I go but just never looked and was wondering if anyone had any that they dont use anymore or that they got to many of. if so i would love some for my diaper pails. also what do you all use for your diaper bag if you have found one small enough please do share. I hate carrying plastic bags for one reason enviromentalist big time if i can help it. Walmart hates me becausei ask them to bag my groceries in canvas bags i am baaaaad about it. Krystal: Do you go to my church?? Calvary Lutheran? We just had a picnic at NE Creek Park the Sunday before last.

No advice on wetbags offline. I use the Bummis ones. I'll need a new one for the diaper pail before Baby comes b/c we've about worn the first one out. Let me know if you find any deals in town!

Krystal - You didn't miss much. Shannon and I were the only ones there, but we ended up with 2 moms that were also doing a meetup from some other group. I thought they were MDC mamas at first, but then they were talking about how great epidurals are, the high cost of 'sposies, and the one chick was saying that she was going to have her (almost-2-year-old) son RE-CIRCED because they barely took any foreskin the first time and you can't tell it was ever done... oh my goodness, I'm surprised I kept my mouth shut. But apparently we just got up with the wrong group, lol. I PM'd Shannon afterwards and was like, "Was it just me, or were they not very crunchy?"

So believe me, you did not miss a thing. We could do it again next Friday, though...

that is fine with me next friday. I will say that i too got my sons circd the first one i was presured and didnt know any better i believed the whole it is better in the long run. when the doc came in i wanted to scream i dont want it done but my hubby won that battle(althought doc was hoooot and wanted to ask if he got circd and that is why he was saying they havent proven any medical reasoning for circing or uncircing. sorry just a side note) my second son i didnt want him circd either but was in a coma after he was born due to hysterectomy resulting from DIC (in my terms bleeding alot) but with second sone he has what some call a disapereaing penis and i like the fact you cant tell really if he was or not. i wish i could say that he wasnt but you can tell a little he was soo and that would be lying.
and with both had epi again first one i didnt know any better and was so scared had no faimly there at all ( i know i am a whimp) then with the second because my preg was so stressful they said to put it in well it fell out and had baby natural in a hospital (Navy hospital) but with everything else crunchy sorry i must tell the truth those are the only noncrunchy things i selectively and delay vaxing the kids but i do vax sorry again. anyway friday is good for me.:(

I'd love to try another meet up, but it'll be a couple of weeks before I can make one. We are leaving to go visit family & won't be back until the 2nd week of July.

Krystal: :hug Don't worry, nobody's giving out crunchy ratings here! We selectively vax & DH wants to circ any boys that we might have. I'm putting up a good anti-circ fight, but I don't think it's worth divorcing over (some MDC-ers do).

I probably won't be able to make it for awhile, I went in Sat night because of my blood pressure & they admitted me... so this past week my mother came down to get the kids & I spent the week in the hospital in Wilmington...
I signed out AMA this weekend, because they gave me a crazy roommate, but I go back this afternoon for more tests & I am pretty sure they'll want to admit me again

Is anyone else interested in doing the nurse-in this Saturday? If not, I'm going to Wilmington to do it there... but let me know so we can get this thing organized.

BTW, the manager of the Jacksonville mall goes to my church and I know him & his family pretty well. This is not necessarily a good thing... I don't know. I wasn't planning on "alerting" anyone anyway... if someone else wanted to, that's fine, but I'm not trying to cause problems in other areas of my life, kwim?

this friday is fine what time? by the way if anyone is familiar with maya wraps can somone help me out. i got a wrap like thing from someone off freecycle and it has a video and all that but i watched the video and well it wasnt as helpful when i actually had to do it. Anyway sorry about your blood preasure thing too. I know about crazy roomates i live with one hehehe :lol anyway i hope that all is going well. keep us informed. by the way i noticed you have i am guessing a two boys one evan and one ethan does that get confusing ya know with momma brain i know mine does and i have totally different names evan and jacob but a friend of mine has an ethan and when we get together wow confusion for both of us.
Anyway about the victoria secret thing i want to go but i would have to do it up here due to i know nothing about wilmington except for the hospital area and the aquariam.(the hospital cause that is where i went after hysterectomy and realllly familiar with the ICU and MICU and well post partum but loved the people there cause they were so nice but i got really nice people i think they felt sorry for me that might be why.) anyway i understand about not wanting to make waves in other areas of life i already am getting enought flack from my family about my crunchiness.

Here is great. I'd rather not drive to Wilmington, since I really can't afford the gas, but I can't not do this! I've never done a nurse-in before, so I'm all excited about this.

It would be nice to have more than 2 people there, though.

Should we alert local media? I wanted to, but didn't know if we'd have much of a turnout. It's last-minute now, but I will get in touch with LLL tomorrow, so they can spread the word. I can send the press release to the Daily News and channel 9 also. Don't know about letting the mall know. It seems like we should, but I would rather not be the one to do it. I'd be more than happy to compose a letter or something. Or we could send them a copy of the press release.

I emailed LLL, channel 12, the Daily News, and a bunch of radio stations. I don't know if I sent it to the right people... I just looked at the website for a "general" contact, and for one radio station (oldies 107.9) I sent it to their morning show people, since 1) there's a woman on that show, but the rest are all men, and 2) they tend announce all kinds of crazy stuff. So hopefully word gets out. If anyone knows of any other place to contact, let me know.

The Daily News called me today! They want to cover the nurse-in Saturday!! I'm very excited about this... but we need more people! I told the reporter that I knew of 3 for sure (from reading the replies here, it now looks like 4 for sure and maybe a 5th). But I would like as big a crowd as possible. If you know any other nursing mothers in the area, please call them as soon as possible and let them know what's going on. Also, if anyone knows the phone numbers to the LLL leaders, could you call them, or give me the # and I'll call? I emailed them but haven't heard back, and we're running short on time.

I'm pming all of you... let's make this happen, ladies!!

Oh, btw, the guy from my church doesn't manage the mall anymore. He quit about a month ago, is doing something else now, and I somehow didn't know. So I called the mall today (the News guy said I would have to if I want media there), and some chick called Anastasia is supposed to call me back.

Yeah, it was at 1:00. Just me & Sharon.. the Daily News showed up, though. They took pictures and talked to us. I didn't even get to nurse, though - DS was just NOT interested. So... it was a little disappointing - didn't even look like a nurse-in or anything - but the newspaper article will hopefully do the job.

I keep thinking, though, that I never told the reporter today that this was a nationwide event. I know I said it on the phone (more than once), and I don't know what Sharon said... but for some reason I am really nervous, thinking this is going to be portrayed as some wacky thing with just us! LOL. Hopefully they'll get it straight. I think I am being paranoid about nothing - I often stress about the most random details...

Oh, and when we met, Sharon & I realized we knew each other - I used to work with her DH. So that was cool... after the semi-nurse-in, we walked around the mall for over an hour just talking.

Jayme - that's great... but let me know if you need anything.

Aw, shucks. I go on vacation for 3 weeks and miss a nurse-in here in Jacksonville! How did the article turn out, ladies?

Welcome Sharon! I'm near Richlands, too! On a road off Bannerman Mill.

I was trying so hard to get on the last few days to tell everyone about early registration at CC Dance, but the server didn't get up in time. You can still register, you just miss out on a $10 discount for early registration. They are very child oriented. DD is doing tumbling & we're trying out the playgroup. They also have several kinds of dance, Kindermusik, and yoga (including prenatal & postnatal classes & a free class with a free childcare coop). They're also starting a boutique with local crafted items (handmade clothing, soaps, etc.). Gosh, I sound like an ad!

How is everyone? Surviving the heat? It was soooo nice to be in Washington with beautiful sunny days and temps around 70!

Jayme, how is Elora? How are you??

Shannon ~ I did make it to the LLL meeting and I really liked it. I am planning to go every month. Did you know there is also a breastfeeding support group at Onslow hospital. It's Wednesdays. I can't remember the time and how often but I can easily find out. I would also love the name of your MW and a doula if you had one or know of a good one. I am meeting a MW tomorrow who is in Burgaw. I have also gotten info from a MW in Raleigh but that seems kind of far away to me, 2 1/2 hours. Things might be sticky with the homebirth if my dh is here. As of right now he is supposed to deploy for a year early next year so me having a homebirth wasn't going to be an issue. He now thinks he's going to get assigned back to his regular unit, which means he wouldn't deploy until next year. I'm not sure how to approach it with him.

Hey everyone. I've decided it's time for my almost 3yo ds to get chickepox. I'm very early pg now, due in early June, so I would like him to get it now before the new baby is born and I have to wait another 2 years (unless anyone knows why I shouldn't be exposed to it while pg). Does anyone around here ever have chickenpox parties or know someone with chickenpox who wouldn't mind meeting my ds? If not now, please remember me if you hear of any upcoming events.

beanma
10-24-2006, 11:53 AM
it's not good while PG. i don't know if it matters if mama has had it or not, but i do know that it's not good while PG.

it's not good while PG.

Oh really? I asked my FP and he said it wouldn't be a problem since I've had chickenpox but you're the 2nd person who's said it may not be a good idea for ds to get it while i'm pg. Guess I better check some more. Or did you just mean it's not good for me to get while pg?

beanma
10-24-2006, 01:03 PM
i'm not sure. it might just be if you haven't had it, but i'm not sure i'd take the chance of intentional exposure while pg. i've heard about folks catching it twice. it is around now so you might be able to get it in your neck of the woods if you really want to try. my kids in chapel hill are just getting over it.

MarineWife
10-24-2006, 01:50 PM
I've been exposed to it since I've had it when my older son got it so I think it's not very likely at all that I would get it again. I will definitely look into it more. How do you find out who has it so you can be around it? We just moved here so I don't know many people. My little one does not go to any type of preschool or babysitter or playgroup.

the United Methodist church across from the garden
has a thrift store and drop box. The thrift store is great
they still sell stuff for 25¢

also by Food Lion in Richlands is the Richlands Community Outreach
I've sat on that board and was very active at one time. Great people
In addition to the Thrift Store:
They have emergency funds for rent and utilities etc and help a tremendous amount of people. If you ever want to do some active volunteering that is
a great place. My children and I would stand in line at the food drop (1st monday of the month) and take the food to local shut-ins that could not get there. It was a great experience and a great way to really feel connected in our community.

Love the fun dress up evening of the ball but hated seeing

No.:( Unfortunately, the dress is plain black. There's nothing to it at all, very, very boring. It's not even all that dressy. DH says I can accessorize to add color and excitement but I can't figure out how. Yeah, some of the choices people make for their dress for the ball is quite interesting. Mercy- How does that food Co-op work? What kind of things are there? We just moved to Hubert last month and I havent found a health food store anywhere. Would I be able to get things like that there, or is it produce?

mercy
11-07-2006, 07:11 PM
welcome to the area danielle!

go to the website.
It is actually EVERYTHING except fresh produce.
They even order Frontier that offer herbals and oils and vitamins etc.
You can order directly through the website once you contact Tama and
get a member number. Then all the orders are tallied and a splits list goes out on email so that everyone can help split cases or bulk grains/flour/beans/dried fruit/cheese etc.
Then the order is placed and the truck delivers in jacksonville-downtown
across from the court house at First Bible Church(i think that's the name)
and everyone helps unload and split orders and then goes home.
It used to be big with co-op babysitting and potluck etc. But now its just a food pick-up day. I haven't participated in quiet awhile. Tuesday are always hard for me. and funds are very tight. But I'm looking at placing an order this month.
If you'd like to go watch the process, pm me.
also there is a health food store in New River shopping plaza across from Big Lots off 24 near old downtown jacksonville....don't know the name
but Mavis is the owner and she is wonderful. I looked it up its called
The Natural Health Food Center 347-4721.

Wow that sounds great!

I'm so happy there is a health food store here! The last place we were at had nothing. :( Is the New River shopping plaza past Western? Thats the farthest I've gotten on 24 so far. :lol Since we live in Hubert I don't get out that way too often.

mercy
11-07-2006, 09:08 PM
It is just past Western.

The health food store is not that big so don't set your sites too high.
But it is a great resource for homeopathic remedies and knowledge.

Infant of Prague has a great thrift store over there too.
and New River Pottery.

If you stay on 24 past Western you'll probably notice the THRIFT STORE
written on the side of the building HUGE. and then the New River Sign
High at the entrance. That's the long way to get into the shopping center but the easiest to direct you to.

Happy Shopping! GOOO BIG LOTS! They actually have (not always)
a ton of organic stuff like UNCHICKEN soup great organic vegan alternative to chicken stock. and sometimes MUIR organic pasta sauces and salsas
black beans and chic peas etc. interesting organics 85% of the time.

I would love to do another playdate. I start school this Friday (finally!!) and will be tied up mornings... and am looking for a part-time job evenings... so basically I'm free afternoons and that's it.

Also, I was wondering who here does selective/delayed or no vaxes, and which doc your kids see, if any. We switched out of NHCL last summer and our new family doc is cool with cosleeping, extended nursing, etc... but I haven't brought up the vax subject yet. Cole has gotten all his on schedule so far (except for 12 months, because we were out of town), but the more I research and think about it, the more I don't want him to have any more, at least not yet. I have the advantage that our doctor's office doesn't do shots, so I have to go to NHCL's shot clinic... so I may be able to avoid the issue entirely. But I might not. I'm supposed to schedule him for his 15-month well baby this month, and she wants copies of his growth chart and shot record from NHCL....

My original point: Who does selective or no vaxes? What doc do you see? Does it affect TriCare at all?

Side note: We are not planning to put Cole in public school or daycare, ever. We may homeschool, but he will probably go to a private Christian school.

I may XP part of this in the vax forum.

MarineWife
01-03-2007, 01:31 PM
Marilyn ~ I do not vax at all anymore. My older ds was fully vaxed until we got to the 12 year booster stuff. He did not get that and I don't plan on having him get any more. My younger ds was vaxed up to 4 months. We see a family pracitioner in town. He's not supportive of not vaxing but he didn't dump us as patients when I told him that we don't vax. He talked to me about it once and has not brought up since. I wouldn't say that I get a great feeling from him but I don't have anything bad to say about him either. I don't know how he is about the other AP sort of stuff. That's not stuff I usually bring up with a doctor because I don't see it as medical stuff. I can PM you his name if you are interested.

I'm not sure I understand your question about anything affecting TriCare. If you are concerned that TriCare would come down on you for not vaxing, I have never heard anything from them about it. I don't think that you could lose your TriCare coverage because you are entitled to it, just like a military doc could not refuse to see you or your family because you don't vax because you are entitled to medical care from them.

I'd be happy to have a playdate at my home. It is kind of small. We are in a two-story cape cod on Camp Lejeune, if any of you know what those are like. I have a fenced in backyard and the kids are welcome to play in my ds' room and the living room. We also have a small playground a short walk away.

ColeysMama

Our doc only knows about extended bf, cosleeping, and so on because it came up in conversation. And I was trying to "feel her out," so to speak. When I went to the TriCare office to switch from NHCL, the only thing I knew was that I wasn't taking Cole back to the ped he'd been seeing. I had just EAS'd, so I had to get a new doc for me as well, under my DH's SSN. They gave me a list of names and told me to pick. Well, I picked mine based on the fact that she was the only woman on the list, and I'm not comfortable seeing a man. I picked a different one for Cole. When I got the TriCare cards, they had the same one down for both of us (the woman). Cole was due for a wbv, so I went ahead and scheduled it.

One of the first things she asked was if he was sleeping through the night and I decided to be honest and say, "I have no idea. He sleeps with me, so if he wakes up and nurses back to sleep, I'm not really aware of it. As long as I get to sleep, it's all good." And she proceeded to tell me how great that was and how she slept with all her kids and nursed them for 4 years.

She was also cool with him being little. He is usually somewhere around the 10% percentile, if that, and NCHL had diagnosed him with FTT and made us come in for weight checks every 2 weeks, write down everything he ate, etc. She couldn't even get an accurate length - he was too long for the tiny newborn scale they had. So she guessed. As for weight, she said he was obviously healthy and developing well, and if he was small, so be it. She (and the nurses) really didn't seem to care how much he weighed. That was a big thing for me, after all the ua violations we had to put up with at NHCL. I do not want to switch.... at all. Ever. But if it comes down to it, it's nice to know there's a doctor in town who would be okay with not vaxing. Or delaying. Or whatever we end up doing.

As for TriCare... I don't know what exactly I'm worried about, but I know the military is stupid about shots and so on. I remember a few years back when they were making people get anthrax vaccines against their will, and we got all kinds of shots when I was at boot camp. No choice, no waiver, nothing. When I was active duty, we were required to get flu shots every year, too. Obviously it's different for dependents, but I just want to be prepared in case anyone decides to make my life difficult. I'm sure if, God forbid, he ever had to go to the ER, it would be a big stink...

Marilyn

We are on Tricare prime and it hasn't been an issue. we no longer vax and not one of our doctors has given us a hard time. I can tell sometimes they don't like it but one of the few things that's really great about using tricare prime on base is that they can't refuse to see you. period. Civillian docs can but military docs can't. It's kind of nice. They can't force you to do anything if you are a civillian.

DD has her first day of school tomorrow and the pre-school we found dind't even bat an eyelash at the vax stuff just told us to be sure all the paperwork was in order.

we have been fortunate so far, I hope you have the same experience.

I ditto what Viola said about the military not being able to force you, as a civilian, to do anything and certianly not get vaxed. You did not have to follow all that FTT crap and going in every 2 weeks stuff. I'd like to know the name of your doc if you don't mind? Like I said, I can't complain about mine but I'm not overly impressed with him either.

Speaking of Doctors, my dd is due for a 2 year check up, but this will be the first time weve seen a Dr since moving here. We are both signed up for family practice at NHCL. I've heard some bad things about them and it's making me not want to even take her, or maybe just switch our PCM. Can anyone recommend a Dr. there?

ColeysMama
01-04-2007, 09:57 AM
Recommend a doc at NHCL or out in town? I recommend my out-in-town doc all the time.... but have only seen one at NHCL, and didn't like him (he had this funny idea that since he went to medical school, he knew my child better than I did). I can PM you my doc's name if you want.

MovingMomma
01-04-2007, 11:15 AM
We haven't seen any of the docs at family practice at NHCL, but I asked the CNM who used to do homebirths for a recommendation & she said Kewish, but I'm not sure if he's a ped or at family practice.

DD1 goes to a pediatric clinic out in town, & I haven't had any trouble with her PCM over vaxes. He is the neonatologist.

DD2 goes to a family practice next door to DD1's clinic, and he was fine on the vaxes also. He also didn't bat an eyelash about the homebirth or that she was finally seeing a dr for the first time at 2.5 months. His kids are homeschooled (it came up in relation to the vax thing) & he sounds way into that.

That isn't to say that both think no vax is a good idea. They both think the Hep B vax is crazy for a newborn, and that chicken pox is pretty non threatening if you get it as a child, but it's harder to find now & poses more risks if an adult contracts the disease. But they were both respectful of my decision not to give my girls even the vaxes that they thought were more necessary.

I have yet to find a dr who is anywhere near as supportive of breastfeeding as yours sounds, Marilyn! Please PM me her info!!! We need the tolerance for small children, also.

There is no way Tricare could mess w/your decisions on vaxing.

I'm up for a playdate! Next week Mon & Tues are free.

:lol Shannon. I hadn't looked at your name since I first signed on here so didn't make the connection either. Yeah, if you'd bring those shirts to playgroup next week, that would be great. I am going to come to LLL tomorrow morning if it kills me. I have an appointment with my MW at noon tomorrow so that should give me just enough time. I have an issue I need to discuss.

I went to a what I think could be a really fun thing for us to do indoors. In Snead's Ferry there is a roller skating rink that has Toddler Time every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9:30 to noon, I think. It's $5.00 per child and they can bring their riding toys to ride around the rink. You can also get or bring skates if you want. I went as part of the Hampstead Mommies meetup group. I'm not so sure about the mom's in the group but the activity was fun. We were the only ones there and they were talking saying it's a shame that no one else takes advantage of it. I thought it would be fun if we all took over one time. :wink

Ok, stupid question. What is NHCL?

Shannon ~ Are you saying your docs are cool on you not vaxing but not supportive about you breastfeeding? I haven't broached the breastfeeding or homebirthing stuff with the FP that we see. We did discuss me being pg and finding a doctor or MW when I went to him for my new patient appointment. I asked if he could recommend any MWs and he said he thought I would have to be high risk based on some of my previous health history. I didn't feel like discussing it, arguing with him about it so I just let it go.

I see a chiropractor who I've been thinking of asking about the vaxing and breastfeeding and such. I take my kids there for adjustments every so often. My chiro in HI was all for not vaxing and breastfeeding. He's the one I got the most info from about vaxes. The chiros here appear, at least, to be much more medically oriented, though. They wear white coats and have X-ray machines. My chiro in HI hardly ever had shoes on much less a white coat. LOL I don't know if the not vaxing thing is pretty much universal to chiros or not.

Have any of you seen the new Traditional Medicine place or whatever it's called on Western Boulevard. I'm going to use my XMas money to check it out. They traditional chinese acupuncture and reiki and do herbs and massage and all kinds of other stuff. It's kind of pricey, though.

Shannon ~ Are you saying your docs are cool on you not vaxing but not supportive about you breastfeeding?

Yes! :dizzy:

Except it's like this: Neither of them are happy that we don't do all vaxes. And they both think breastfeeding is good. :)

The ped (who multiple people have told me is very pro breastfeeding) encouraged me to wean DD1 when she was 2 & not gaining much. He understood my reluctance to wean when I reminded him she's allergic to milk & soy & he discovered he couldn't recommend any of his high calorie supplements.

I asked the family practitioner how he feels about "extended" breastfeeding (which I defined as past 2 years when he asked) and he said that after a certain point it has no nutritional value and it could also be detrimental to the child's moral/emotional development.

:shrug I understand a doctor not being 100% on board w/selective vaxing. I don't have any trouble saying "no thanks." But I think they should be better educated about breastfeeding.

Yeah, that does seem totally backward, doesn't it? Probably has something to do with the fact that vaxes are medically based and profit driven so they have more info on that. Breastfeeding is a natural, physiological process with no potential for profit so they (researchers, doctors, scientists) just don't know much about it.

Here's another thing I learned about through that Hampstead Mommies group. It sounds like it might be something fun to do some time. It's a bit of a drive since it's in Wilmington so maybe more of a special occasion thing than an every month thing. Oh, wow, Mercy! That's great. Thanks so much. I'll have to think about this for a bit now to try to figure out the best time. I am not an arsty/crafty person at all so any input from anyone on things to do, how to do them and materials needed would be greatly appreciated.

Hay everyone. Here's a lactivist alert. Walmart/Similac is having a nutrition seminar for all new moms/babies on February 3rd at various stores. I checked and the supercent in Jacksonville is planning one. Apparently, there is no mention of breastfeeding as being best for babies. I would love to go and do whatever to protest, get breastfeeding in the discussion. I'd stage a nurse in except that my ds doesn't bf anymore. Anyone else game?

I think we could always reschedule class for a nurse in!

listen, I just got back from the childcare resource and referral center-smart start. They have a great facility! Right now they are next to chic-filet on western. but Feb 23 they are having their grand opening of their new facility in Richlands. very near the library/museum on 258.

they have a large room filled with equipment/lessons/blocks/toys/gross motor/fine motor/books/music....anything you can think of. A very small fee to join and you can check out the stuff for a month. I used the place often when we had the montessori preschool. It has grown tremendously since then. The staff is kind and helpful too.

LLL should put some brochures up there. They are always looking for people to hold classes. We've talked allot about sharing resources for gentle discipline, attachment parenting, homeschooling, etc. I think we reach a wider audience there.

check em out!

It goes from 10-3 so we can still make dance class. February 3rd is a Saturday, right?

I hope I don't get in trouble for this. I guess if I do someone will tell me. Has anyone seen pediatrician Dr. Gant or been to Onslow Pediatric Associates? I'm wondering because I just had a really good telephone conversation with him about having a baby at Onslow Hospital. He was very nice and helpful and totally understood my concerns and was willing to accomodate me as much as possible (if I were to end up there). He also brought up that if I didn't want my baby to get the Hep B shot, I just needed to let the hospital staff know although he thinks it's a good vaccination. I didn't even ask about that. So, now I'm thinking about trying him as a pediatrician for my baby at least for the first couple of months since my FP does not see babies until they are 2 months old.

Welcome Semper!

MW-Baby factory, I went once 10 years ago.
Can't imagine how packed it is now.

Can't attest to his philosophies either. We saw a Dr. from Egypt that was at that practice. Not sure if he is still there or not. He was great. Can't remember his name.

I was very concerned with the sheer number of patients and the multitudes of sick children in the lobby. unavoidable I guess.

Yeah, mercy, I know it's a baby factory. They are all, it seems. :irked: It certainly can't be any worse than the naval clinic. I only take my kids when they are sick so I'm not too worried about that. I don't go for the so-called "well baby" checks. (They're only a ruse to get you so they can give your kid a shot.)

From what I understand, there are only 2 peds clinics in Jax and they are both pretty overcrowded. I know JCC is because that's where we were for awhile. I decided to take my kids to Hampstead Family Medicine instead. I'm not as crunchy on the medical front as some are, so I do the vaxes and stuff. I can't attest to their position there because I've never asked, but I was very encouraged to breastfeed (Claire was 11 months old and still nursing at the time, Doc was happy to see that.) I have never once had to wait, they have a walk-in clinic in Surf City with walk-in hours all day as well as Saturday. That's where I have all of our appointments which is nice because it's closer than Hampstead. Once they made an appointment for me in the Hampstead office but when I mentioned I'd rather go to the Surf City clinic they had no problem making it there instead. I justify the drive because I had been waiting in a gross sick waiting room at least twice as long as the drive time when my kids were at JCC.

I've heard good things about Dr. Gant. I believe that is who my best friend goes to and she's lived in Jacksonville most of her life.

It's so nice to catch up with you all.maybe i can join you guys on a playdate soon.
As for the nurse-in I'm game. lol.Marilyn(ColeysMama) and I did the one at VS last yr.

Here's my situation with picking a ped so maybe you guys can help me figure out if it's even worth it. I am planning a homebirth but am also seeing an OB in town just in case something develops before labor and I can't have a homebirth. I heard some bad things about Onslow hospital and their baby nursery policy so I am seeing if I can get into the naval OB clinic. My FP put a referral in for me at the naval OB clinic but I have a feeling I won't be accepted since I'm TriCare Standard and I've heard they refer a lot of Prime people out for lack of room. So, if I end up at Onslow for some strange reason, I am supposed to have a doctor picked out for my baby at least while s/he is at the hospital. My FP does not have pedatric priviledges at Onslow. I called a few other FPs in town and none of them do. I'm stuck with either Onslow or Jacksonville ped clinics. I did see that Jacksonville also has a FP clinic but I didn't like the reponse I got from them when I called to ask about the hospital nursery policies. Basically, I got no reponse. After discharge from the hospital and until baby is 2 months old I can always go to the naval ped clinic if I need to since baby is automatically covered under Prime for that time period. Should I even bother with all of this?

I sort of have a plan in my head that, if for some reason I do have to plan for a hospital birth and don't get accepted to the naval OB clinic, I will go to my civilian OB prenatal care. However, once I go into labor, I'll go to the naval hospital and refuse to leave. I know that probably sounds kind of crazy but I do NOT want my baby taken to a nursery where I cannot see what's going on. Do you think they'd physically make a woman in labor leave?

On the Walmart thing, I was wondering if we could get some LLL flyers and some Top 10 reasons to BF flyers to pass out. Does anyone know how to get these? I don't mind making the copies. And, does anyone know if this is something we could do inside the store (I have noticed that people wander around the store passing out religious literature) or do you think we'd be asked to leave? I'm planning to wear my "Human Milk for Human Babies" t-shirt even though it's too small and has a hole in one armpit. :o

Another doc question - I found out this past week that Cole's and my FP is no longer practicing in Jacksonville (at least not at the clinic where she was). He saw another FP on Tues for his 15-month WBV, because the clinic told me as long as he saw someone at the same facility as his old doc, it would be okay with TriCare. Well, when we got there and checked in, they told me that TriCare switched him to another doc at another practice.

The new one is Milton Kale. He practices at Onslow Pediatric Associates. Does anyone know anything about him? Or OPA?

MW - If you go to the ER, they legally cannot make you leave. However, I wouldn't want to have my baby in an ER type of setting.

MarineWife

Dr. Kale is at the same place as Dr. Gant. I don't know anything about him or that clinic except for that.

I wasn't thinking of going to the ER. I meant just showing up at L&D. I would think, however, if you went through the ER and they determined there was no emergency other than you having a baby, they'd just send you up to L&D. Does that make sense?

ColeysMama
01-26-2007, 01:50 PM
It makes sense, I suppose... theoretically. But I'm not sure it would actually work that way. Unless you are about to deliver and there's no time, they'd prolly send you over to OMH.

Onslow Pediatric Associates is such a generic name, it makes me automatically think "mainstream." Not sure if that makes sense. The doc Cole saw Tues was okay, though not nearly as cool as the old one. I may see if we can switch to him since Cole's records are already there.

I also need a new doc for myself. They assigned me a new one, but it's a man, and I would be very uncomfortable seeing a male doc (for religious as well as personal reasons). Actually, the only reason I was seeing the first one was because when I went to the tricare office to get registered, she was the only woman on the list. So if anyone knows anyone... let me know!

MarineWife

Yeah, Marilyn, I was figuring on waiting as long as possible before going to the hospital so that I would be in active labor by the time I got there. I guess something could come up that would require me to be induced or have a c-section but I think all of these scenarios are highly unlikely based on my personal health history plus how this pg has been going already. These are all just what ifs and back up plans.

As far as PCMs, I don't really know anything about how that works since I use Standard so I don't have to designate a PCM. I'm not sure what you need a doctor for but could you designate an OB/GYN as your PCM? You might be more likely to find a woman that way.

ColeysMama
01-26-2007, 08:33 PM
There's a list of who's available, and you pick off the list. That's it, as far as I know. I don't necessarily need a doc right now, I'm just thinking of if I get seriously sick or something... plus I'm due for a pelvic exam/pap soon... and want to get my IUD removed. So... it would be nice to have someone.

I'm going to go to the tricare website and see if I can find a list of providers or something...

MarineWife
01-27-2007, 07:27 AM
Marilyn ~ A lot of times those lists will only list the head doc in the practice (who seems to be overwhelmingly male) but there may be other docs, including females, in the practice that you can see. For example, the OB/GYN place I go to has one male doctor listed but I see the female OB/GYN plus they have 2 female MWs that I can see. Everything is still billed to TriCare through the head male doc. I know they all take TriCare Prime but I don't know if you need a referral from a PCM to go there since OB/GYN may be considered a specialty. *shrug* Whenever I have questions about anything with TriCare I call and speak to a superviser. The regular customer service people don't know much.

They probably wouldn't send you away from NHCL if you were in labor, but would TC cover it since OMH is so close? I have the number of the nurse who does the hospital tours (also is a IBCLC and Lamaze Educator) who might be able to answer a "hypothetical" question. I'll e-mail you.

On another note, are we the only ones who are going to be at the roller rink this Thursday?

MarineWife
01-28-2007, 02:12 PM
I hadn't invited anyone else but any is welcome to come.

I don't know why TC wouldn't cover it. I didn't think TC was really even involved with paying the MTFs. I am entitled to care at any MTF as a military dependent regardless of which type of TC insurance I choose. I really don't see how they can refuse me care or force me to give birth somewhere else.
