I saw a friend of a friend's child wearing these a few years ago. I think they were to ward evil spirits and also to help keep track of the baby. About a year ago, I had a friend touring South Asia and I asked him to bring me some back. He said he looked and asked all over Thailand and most people didn't know what he was asking about. He ended up asking someone's grandmother for help and was able to get a pair. He was told that it was a pretty old tradition that no one did anymore. We never did find out what they were called and I was never able to find any information about them online (perhaps because I didn't know what to search...)
About a month after my friend brought me a set back, I saw some in the window of a jewelry shop in a local Chinatown near us (San Francisco). They had several pairs. So if you have access to it, check out stores in a local asian community and they may have some or know where to get them. They seem like a simple design and if nothing else, you may be able to find a local artisan to make more for you- try asking at a bead shop or farmer's market.
Good luck!
