I couldn't find a forum for baby names, so if this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it. Thanks!

As naming a child is something that will remain with them (hopefully) forever and can affect how they grow as a person and how others respond to them, I wanted some input from random people about how they would pronounce this name:

Erath.

Thanks ladies! :D

If I saw it on a form or something I’d think it was either “air-ath” or “ur-ath”.

err (to err is human ) oth (goth)

I am trying to picture hearing you call for your child to come home from the neighbors. I have to see how you would pronounce it.

ETA: How do you pronounce doula? I have always wondered!

I think I'd look at it and wonder if it was misspelled and was actually supposed to be "Earth."

I think I'd actually pronounce it EE - rath, though.

I did that too!

I would pronounce it ERR-uth. (like "to err is human")

When I first read it I pronounced it
Ee-wraith. Like capital E and then wraith, like beware the wraith of vengence. :lol :o

FWIW< I had naming ceremonies for most of my children, and the ones whose name swere on their recorded Birth Certificate, I spelled phonetically, rather than how they are spelled in the ojibwe-english dictionary.

So, instead of Zhigwaan or other, I spelled it Sigwan, the way it sounds phonetically in English. :shrug
Now, there is no way for people to mispronounce her name, but people still read it wrong, like calling her Saigon (the city in Vietnam). :scratch

Hmmmm. I would pronounce it Ear-uth, with the emphasis on the first syllable.

For some reason, I would pronounce it "Raith". Leaving the "E" out. It (mistakenly i assume) be pronounced "Rath", which wouldn't be great (wrath). And doula is DOO luh btw.

"air"-uth, with the stress on the first syllable, or eh-rath, with the stress on the second syllable.

MamaInTheBoonies, don't feel bad. We get people calling my daughter "Lutheran" when they hear her name, or else "Luth-ann" (It's Luthien, stress on the first syllable. Elvish isn't THAT hard to pronounce, I mean, if Liv Tyler can do it...)

For those I missed who pronounced it correctly: :thumb

We have chosen to pronounce it like:

Errith/Aireth/like Erin but with a "th" instead of an "n".

The reason I "polled" was because I am wondering how common it will be to be called "E-Rath" through his life (like capital "E"- wrath). I thought that would be most people's immediate pronunciation of it, but seeing that the majority basically got it spot on, it's making me feel a little less hesitant about the name, although we are still "trying it out" hehe!

Thanks guys! :love

:hug I have heard some ridiculous ways of saying even common names - I think a lot of the time people see that it's different and just rush read it.
