Hi! I'm desperate to find out what other people think about the name Allegra. I first heard of it in a movie, it's an Italian name and thought it sounded so pretty.
But, is so uncommon, and there's a allergy medicine by that same name:(
We don't suffer from any allergies in this family but I was wondering if the allergy medicine is the first thing that comes to most other people's mind when they hear the name?
Thanks!

I still have no names picked out and the baby should be along soon!:p

I am sorry because it is a nice name but the allergy medicine is the FIRST thing that comes to my mind. We don't have allergies either so I don't use it but the commercials are all over the TV and in print ads.

sorry...yes, first thing I thought of was the allergy medication... www.allegra.com

It is a pretty name, but unless and until that brand name loses its current popularity, I'd be scared to use it.

I agree with pp that all I can think of is the allergy med.

Hhhmmm... well, the first thing that came to mind is that Allegra would fit perfectly into a family I know whose children all have musical names (melody, aria).

But right after that, I thought, "allergy medicine!"

So I would probably pick a different name.

Yikes.... I thought the same thing. Stupid pharma!

I love the name. 20 years from now nobody will know about the alergy medicine.

I have always liked the name Allegra, but unfortunately, I am now more likely to associate it with the medicine. It's really too bad, because it is a beautiful name.

I'm sorry I'll have to agree with everyone.

Perhaps if you change it just a little?

Allesra sounds pretty to me.

Good luck!

Maybe use it as a middle name?

The allergy med was the first thing that entered my mind.

Ah, too bad. The first thing that came to my mind was a college classmate who was beautiful and talented and I adored her. And then the musical definition. I don't have allergies so I guess I forgot about the medication.

(I would name her Allegra anyway!)

Medcine and music are what come to my mind.

Yeah, my first though was "Ahhhh, Allegra" too

BUT I really think it's a beautiful name, and with the way meds come and go you might be just fine with it.
I think if you really like it you should go for it; plus, Allie is a really cute nick name if you go for those :D

I actually really like it...despite the medication connection. I think it's a very pretty, feminine (but not girly) name.

If you wanted something very slightly different, how about Allegria?

I don't like it, I too just think of allergy meds.

Well, I did think of the alergy medicine first, but. The slogan is "ahhh, allegra" so i can see how that would be kind of nice to ehar if thats your name, and also there was a childrens show on nick jr a while back named "allegra's window". That little girl was the cutest muppet i think i have ever seen. But all in all, i think it is a beautiful name.

My best friend is named Allegra!:thumb I always think of her, and usually forget there's a med by that name.

I think the name is beautiful :D I must admit with everyone else that I instantly thought of the med too. I would say that it's not only just an alergy med but it's one of the two most widely used and heavily marketed over the last 5 yrs and probably won't die out any time soon. The reason why most of us know it even if we aren't suffering from allergys.

It's not a reason to not use the name though! For what it's worth my ds#1 is named Israel. People who aren't Jewish tend to think it's silly to name your baby after a nation. The fact is he's not named for a nation but after a person... so it really only matters how you feel.

A good friend has a 9yo daughter named Allegra. She was named before the med came out... I dunno - we don't think of the medicine when we see her. It might be the first impression of strangers but it won't be the impression of anyone who really knows you.

Hmmmmm - thanks so much for all the great input!

Yes, I'm afraid that the average public will immediately think of the medicine....but a few years down the line there will be a new and better medicine and who knows...

I liked the variations on it some of you moms suggested! Great ideas!

Hmmmm, off to go think it over! and see what other names go with it!

My aunt had a client with a daughter named Nyquil. Because she liked the medicine. That said, I did think of the allergy medicine first, but it is a beautiful name.

As a PP poster said, Allegra is one of the most popular allergy medicines now and has been for quite some time. I've been taking it myself for at least 7 years or more. There really isn't much else on the market that compares with it for serious allergies. So it really isn't very likely to become less popular in the near future.

One of the names many people suggested to us was Rosemary. Personally I could never name my dc Rosemary because of the association witht he movie Rosemary's Baby. Granted some people say that no one in 20 years will know of that movie, but people of my generation will still remember it I think. So I would personally use a different name than Allegra.

There are a bunch of beautiful musical names that are similar that you might like. Do some surfing and I bet you can find something you like better. I would hate to name a child the same name as a popular medicine. The kids will find a way to tease them wahtever you name them - why give them ammo to start with?

I thought cirque de soleil, they had a show awhile back called Alegria. I too think it is a beautiful name, and those that get to know your daughter will think of her when they see commercials. Who cares about the general public

I don't agree. My dh always said that since his name was hard to make fun of (Justin) the kids just found other, sometimes worse things to call him. If you're going to be the target of teasing, they will find a way, name, shape, personality, or something. Better to teach your child how to respond to this type of bullying than to get rid of a name you love because the kids might tease her.

Yeah, I thought of medicine. I didn't know it was allergy medicine, but I knew it was something. Just one more way advertising has really screwed us up! DH and I like the name Levi, but we think of jeans so probably won't use it.

The immediate image that came to mind was a beautiful little girl at about 8 years old in a pretty cream-coloured dress and lovely long, dark, brown ringlets with a bow in her hair. :love

Following that, musical associations.

I didn't think of the allergy medicine at all.

Trust your heart and intuition to lead you to the right name for your new addition. I think people actually looking at her would forget about any "allery medicine connection" and just enjoy the fact that she has a beautiful name.

My first thought was Versace's niece. Then music (I'm not American, so I haven't heard of the medicine). I think the suggestion of Alegria is great, if the medicine association worries you.

I think it's a lovely name!

I think popular allergy meds have a lot of longevity. Benadryl has been out 20-30 years. So has Dimetapp. My sister went on Claritin 20 years ago, my mom went on Zyrtec 10 years ago and now my DD is taking it because it's still a great drug. If you love the name and don't care that most people are going to think of the med, go for it. But I *definitely* wouldn't count on it losing popularity in the next 20 years!

I really like the name and would say who cares what everyone else thinks. But you have to think of it the other way also... How will your daughter feel with the name? But she could just go by a nickname... I would name my daughter Allegra, I think it is a very beautiful name. I don't know. I guess I am no help:lol

I like it, nice name, I don't care about the medicine, probably because I don't watch enough TV to have been branded by the ads. Do they evens till show them?

But you've also got to remember that some medicines aren't available outside the US. Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claratin and Dimetapp are all available globally, but Allegra is not (so only Americans will associate it with the medicine). If the family ever travels outside the US nobody will have the medicine association.
