For the past several months, DS has had extremely severe diaper rash off and on. We finally figured out that he was allergic to strawberries when he broke out in hives one day. When we eliminated strawberries, he improved greatly, but now the diaper rash has returned with a vengence. He's also got bumpy skin. It's not red, it doesn't even really look like a rash, it's just not smooth like a baby's skin is supposed to be. I want to put him on an elimination diet to try and see what he's allergic to. DH and I were just going to kinda wing it. What we've been planning to do is give him nothing but breastmilk, oatmeal, and bananas for four days. Then introduce one food for four days, then another, etc, until we figure out what it is that he's allergic to. Will this work? I know it'll be tough because he'll be fussy and wanting to eat other foods, but I don't know how to figure out what's causing the rash. We have no family history of food allergies so I have nowhere to start. What other foods could I give him besides oatmeal and bananas that are pretty unlikely to be allergy triggers?

Thanks for the help!

I think bananas are a fairly common allergen. What does he usually eat? It might be easier to eliminate things one at time starting with the most likely...since you're breastfeeding you'll have to eliminate it from your diet too.
The most common allergens are dairy, eggs, soy, and wheat. Also peanuts, nuts and shellfish. Does he eat any of those on a regular basis?

My 20 month old barely eats but she eats quinoa, and since it's not a common food it's an unlikey allergen. I just cook it like rice and put diced stir-fried veggies in it. She likes it with basalmic vinegar and olive oil (weird kid...).

Bananas were his first food and he's been eating them almost daily since 6 months. Since this has been a recent, intermittant thing, I doubt it's the bananas. We got a notebook today to keep track of what he eats and we'll see how it goes.
