I am getting conflicting information! I have read that you shouldnt take Lysine durring pregnancy and then I have read that you should (for herpes outbreaks) My doctor says he isnt going to have me do a round of any drug (which is fine by me) before delivery but I wanted to take Lysine just to minimize the chances of having an outbreak. If you do take it how much do you take. Thanks

Argh I am struggling with this too. My original midwives (MEDwives) wanted me to start taking Valtrex at 28 weeks, which i was uncomfortable with, so i put it off. My new midwife, who is great, recommended I start taking it at 36 weeks, which I am much more comfortable with. (I get pretty frequent obs :( )

As far as the Lysine goes, I just don't know! My midwife said it was totally fine, and that if I do take it, to take 1500 mg/day. I read that it is a Pregnancy class C, and the link for it is here: http://www.safefetus.com/DrugDetail.asp?DrugId=209&TradeName=L-Lysine&TradeId=2544

Valtrex is class B. I am assuming that Lysine is probably safe, just has never been studied, whereas Valtrex has. I would weigh the risks/benefits. How many obs do you get? I know I really really don't want a c-section, but I just hate having to take anything. :irked:

Just found out I have it in February, actually on Valentines Day (what a great day to hear that news :( ) Anyway I have had my first ob and then another one last month, I just know it will be my luck to have one right at that time!

i used lysine throughout my entire pregnancy with dd. Middies said it shouldn't hurt the babe. I used 1000mg a day, as it's the only thing that would keep the coldsores away. Worked like a charm! Not a one during pregnancy. I read all the conflicting info too, but did it anyway when my midwives said it was ok, and there were no ill effects on dd.

Its totally fine. Dont forget to avoid peanut butter, and other foods high in argenine.

And, FYI, European countries do not deliver babies via c/s in women who have outbreaks (unless their first time has been during PG) at delivery.

You have the right to choose your medical, regardless of whether or not the doctors agree.
