What have you read, what will you read, or what can you recommend to us first timers?

I have been looking through the Dr. Sears "Pregnancy" book.
I also have "Wise Woman for the Herbal years"
and a book by Penny Simkin - "Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond" I think its called.

My midwife (she is a friend and neighbor so she knows already) gave me a list of good authors, and her only request was that I don't bother with "what to expect when youre expecting" but I've already been told by too many people that its a fear-based book so I wasnt planning on reading it anyhow.

I'm reading The Natural Pregnancy Book (http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=62-1587611783-0), by Aviva Jill Romm. I'm not far into it, but so far, so good.

What's your impression of the books you're reading?

Thanks -- I am going to see if I can find that one.

The Dr. Sears "Pregnancy" book has a bit about first trimester stuff which is good and helpful to DH.

"Wise Woman for the Herbal years" is interesting - they recommend Red Rasberry Leaf Tea all pregnancy long as a helpful toner but most of it is really for advanced stages of pregnancy.

The book by Penny Simkin - "Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond" is good but more about the choices re: doctors, midwives, doulas, etc... So there isnt as much about 1st trimester stuff.

Not a naturally minded book (but sounds like you have that covered!) but I enjoyed the rough guide to pregnancy by Kaz Cooke. It is very funny and has a section for each week of the pregnancy which is great. I don't agree with all the info and opinions in the book but it is nice to have something to read about each stage, even early on.

I have always got a kick out of "Spiritual Midwifery" by Ina May Gaskins. I believe she has a (fairly) new book out that is suppose to be great.

I am currently reading Pregnancy after a Loss & it is pretty good about putting some of my fears to rest. Also, anything by Ida Mae is going to be good. Also, Henci Goer's The Thinking Woman's Guide to a better Birth is excellent!
