Has anyone out there been diagnosed with a hypothyroid during pregnancy? I just found out my THS is 5.35 and the normal cut-off is 4. I don't fit any of the symptoms of Hypothyroid so my naturopath doctor thinks it is probably just pregnancy related (which I guess isn't uncommon). I've been following the "eat right for your blood type" diet and also taking some natural treatments by the naturopath but I wanted to know if anyone ever had a personal experience with this and if and how it effects the baby.

I am hypothyroid. I have been since my teen years. During pregnancy my levels did change and my endocronologist adjusted my Synthroid acordingly. After pregnancy my levels went back to pre-pregnacy levels.

It did not affect my children in any way.

Ditto what kewb said. I've been hypothyroid for years and my TSH levels went up so much Synthroid dosage was increased. My endrocrinologist recommended that I go in "right away" once finding out that I was pregnant. Hypothyroidism, when untreated, can lead to miscarriage and low IQ's. :gloomy:

Also, the currently recommended range of TSH is 0.3 to 3.0. About.com has a great source of thyroid info (http://thyroid.about.com/cs/newsinfo/l/bltest_values.htm).

HTH!

Thanks for your replies everyone!

It is reassuring to know your children came out fine kewb!

My clinic's cut off is 4. And I've been reading that some clinics have a cut off of 5. I thought that gave me hope but my naturopath also goes with a cut-off of 4 so he is actively treating my hypothyroid. So far I haven't miscarried. I guess I won't know about the low IQ until my baby grows up. :gloomy: I wonder what the statistics are on it. Does anyone know where I can get that information on the net?

If you look at the about.com site, they have a lot of those types of stats. Your levels aren't really that far out of the range and a few years ago they would have been considered normal. For me, being at a 5 or so would really have me feeling "off".

There are some other threads here regarding natural supplements. Also, there's a naturaly thyroid medication made of dessicated pig thyroid glands from Armour that is available.

Best of luck,
Melissa
