I posted this in the general breastfeeding section, but thought, I might try here too...
Okay, so I'm a little confused. Does anyone know about the risks of fever blisters with a newborn. I'm a freaked out! My 3 year old still nurses about 4 times a day. And definiatly has to nurse to go to sleep still. I'm 39 weeks pregnant, and she's got a cold. She gets fever blisters occasionaly, only when she has a cold. Just my luck!
I've heard this can be very risky to the newborn who could catch the herpes virus topicly from my breast. The mw said that just washing the breast would not kill this icky virus. HELP!

I would seriously consider holding off temporarily until you are sure that your older daughter is not having an outbreak. Active herpes on your breast is an absolute contraindication to nursing your newborn, I would imagine you would not want your newborn getting it from the baby, or you could consider having one breast for your toddler and one for the new baby, with good handwashing in between. Herpes is dangerous for newborns and I would take it seriously.
