Hi:

I may be having surgery in the next few months. My son is almost 9 months and relies mainly on breastfeeding for his nutrition. He eats some solid food, but really hasn't gotten into it, much yet. (I'm not worried.. his brother didn't really become a big solid food eater until around 11 months). Surgery should be pretty easy (hopefully)... in and out... one day in the hospital, most likely. I can easily have enough breastmilk in the freezer for that time frame. However, after surgery, it's possible that my ability to consume enough liquids may be hampered for a few weeks... and I'm worried about how that will affect my breastmilk supply. Anybody have a similar experience?? Any tips to offer??

Thanks,
Karla

You might not want to share this, but what kind of surgery are you having? With almost all surgeries, you can consume clear liquids within 12 hours of the surgery. It's actually encouraged. Being dehydrated can dramatically effect your milk supply and your recovery.

It's surgery on my stomach. Drinking liquids is definitely encouraged post-op... but from what I've read, it takes the average person a few weeks before they're getting in 64 oz or so. Some people end up in the hospital with IVs for dehydration.

The only stomach surgery that I know of where people have difficulty consuming fluids is gastric bypass. That's because their stomach is shrunken very small and can only hold a small amount of fluid at one time. I would drink small amounts of water all through the day. Just 4 oz at a time can really add up. Good luck with your surgery and if you do find yourself getting dehydrated, hustle into the dr so you can get IV fluids.

Thanks. It's actually a partial gastrectomy. (?sp) I figure I'll be more motivated than most to get my fluids in due to my little guy... so hopefully I'll be OK.

Thanks. I'm trying to delay it until October, although it may have to happen sooner. At least then, the little guy will be past 1 year. My goal was to let him self-wean like his brother. I'm hoping if I do lose some of my supply, I can re-establish it once my fluid intake is better.

Are you able to arrange for an IV or IV access (like a PICC line) until your fluid intake is back to normal? Have you spoken to your doc about your concerns? Be sure to discuss w/ anesthiologist that you are nursing and do not want meds that will compromise your supply.
