Anyone thinking of names yet??

Past experience shows that out of a zillion names that DH and I will come up with, we are going to only agree on one. We never did come up with a boy name last time, but thankfully we had a girl (didn't know gender until she was born.) Anyway, boy names are tough for us. If DD had been a DS, the poor child would still probably be nameless.

So far, I have

girl:
Annika Lilly (my favorite)
Ariana Kay

boy:
Jonas
Miles
Asher (my favorite)
Drew
Connor
Taylor
Caleb

Unfortunately, our last name ends in "on" so the boy name I realllly like, Aiden, sorta rhymes and sound funny.

So far, I've only run Annika and Asher past DH, and he resoundingly said no. Still have 8 months to work on him though. :thumb

Yes, we're already thinking!

It's so hard, esp. if we have another DD, because I don't want it to be that the name is "third best."

Our first DD's name was easy (both loved it), 2nd, not so much . . .DH picked it, wouldn't discuss it, and that was that. :irked: Now I told him it's MY turn to pick. :thumb

That's an interesting point. I hadn't thought of it that way! Great, something else to think about to make this more challenging. :lol I guess what I worry about the most is trying to find a unique-ish name that has a unique one syllable nickname. Mine's pretty common, and it always sorta has bugged me. Although some of the names I like aren't so unique. :shrug

Oh, funny that your DH stubbornly picked the last name! I need to make sure DH doesn't somehow get the same idea in his head....

I am ALWAYS thinking of baby names. I'm a junkie. It's a horrible addiction.

For a boy:
Rio-My absolute favorite
Sawyer-Hubby said no when I proposed it for DS1
Liam-Might go all the way with William, me granpaps name, but call him Liam
Miles-Do you think this would be ok with Mason, DS1?

For a girl:
Sophia, nn Sophie
Lucy
Lily-This is DH's input. I think that there's too much "L" there with DD1 and our last name has an L and my name has an L. (I know I'm a freak)
Casseopaia-I love this name, but it seems rather cumbersome and I can't think of a good nn for it since I don't care for Cassie.

Hubby likes Sophia too. This name has been stuck in my head for a long time, just like Ayla was before she was born. Secretly I'd like to have another boy, though of course I would love a little girl too, ykwim?

Still anxiously awaiting a BFP.....

Nichole, I just have to say I LOVE your DC's names! Ayla and Mason are such great names. And I love the ones you're thinking of now. I think having a Miles and a Mason would be fine, but I grew up in a family of all J's and it seems normal to me to have repeating first letters. :) And wow, Casseopaia -- that's just beautiful! That's my favorite constellation. :) Hmmm.... maybe Paia for a nickname??

Hi
I found out Thursday that I am pregnant and I have not talked with DH about names yet. I really like the names. I am still in shock.

Girls
Tess
Grace
Emma
Matilda and we would call her Tillie it was my grandmas name.

Boys
Cooper
Aiden
Jesse
Otis

Congrats rrmrose! :balloons I think that Tillie as a nickname for Matilda is so cute! I would like to also use my grandmother's name, but it was Lillian, which goes badly with my last name. :( So that's kinda why I was thinking Lilly. :) (Although everyone in the world called her "Mike", so I guess it doesn't really matter. :lol )

Hi ladies! We already have names picked out & agreed upon! We do still have 8 months to rethink though...We're not telling any family members until the birth if we can help it because we don't want thier "opinions". Anywhoo...drumroll please...

Bodhi Hunter
Kaia Hope

**lil background, DH and I met in AK, so we wanted to name all of our kiddos with Alaskan middle names. Our DD's middle name is Aurora, and Hunnter is after Mt Hunter, and there is a town named Hope ;)

Thanks for the compliments, Astro! Always nice to hear!

Isn't Paia prounounced peeya? That's what I always thought, but if I'm wrong, please lemme know! I had ruled it out for the teasing factor. I read a book, My Sister's Keeper, by Jodi Picoult, and Casseopaia was the main character's name. They called her Cass and Cassie, I think.

Laura (the sister I recently lost)

BOY:

I'm sorry, Astro. You are going to have to give it up.

Just put it in the mail and send it to me. I am now considered an expert in astrophysicamajiggerwhatsits.:nana:

I like your suggestion, Courtney. Cassia. Cass-ee-ya.

I also really like Elizabeth, even though it's not a style I normally pick.

An old friend of ours, when his wife was pregnant, he said that if it was a boy, they'd name it Henry. I begged him not to do it. I thought it was an awful name.

Now, I'm ashamed to admit that it has grown on me! Of course, we could never use it because I wouldn't want him to think we talked him out of it so that we could use it.:o

For girls, I also really love Jocelyn, Joss or Josie for short. (Thanks Melanie, for reminding me of that name!) I like Jolie too, but a friend named her dog that and another friend named her kid that, plus the whole Angelina Jolie thang.......Le sigh.

We've been talking names for a long time, even though this bean is a surprise.

DD is Millicent Caterina

We're thinking possibly:

Alistair Reyes for a boy

or

Imogen Candace for a girl.

I don't know though. I do think that the every soul has its own name, and it is the parent's job to "listen" for the name. If it is anything like DD, we won't end up using the name we had spent hours picking out because it just won't fit right.

grapejuicemama
06-27-2006, 01:37 PM
I totally understand what you mean. DD Ayla was just meant to be Ayla.

Bizarre story:

When I was about 5 months pregnant with her, living with a roomie, we got a phone call. Roomie answered the phone:

Older woman voice, "Is Ayla there?"

Roomie, ".....no."

Older woman, "Can I please talk to Ayla?"

Roomie,"There's no Ayla here."

Older woman, "Are you sure?"

Roomie, "Yeah. Sorry."

Click

I was in the kitchen when she got that call and her face was the whitiest shade of whiteness I have ever seen. I thought that she was pranking me, but she swears up and down she wasn't. She's not really the practical joking type anyway.

A couple of nights later, roomie had a dream about a little girl with long red hair. Her father has almost black hair and my hair is light brown.

Bear in mind, we didn't know the sex, although I had an inkling it was a girl.

A coupla months later, when we pulled my brand new baby out of the birth tub, you can imagine the shock when we saw she had a full head of RED hair!

Mason's story isn't nearly as interesting. We just couldn't really really decide on a name. We had kind of liked the name. When he was a few hours old, we just looked at each other over his sleeping wittle body and said, in unison, "Mason Gage."

Girls
Eden Katherine ( Katherine is my grandma's name)
Ava (ok I am suck on a middle name here)

Boys
Ethan Alexander
Lucas William

If its a boy I got dh to agree to Lucian Thranduil like a mos ago. But since we got the :+ He Hasn't brought it up again. I think he will back peddle. I know he wants Thranduil so thats a given but the first name might change. We'll see.

OOooo, cool name Full Heart!

We have several names we like, but one that really sticks with us, and it works for boy or girl. Middle names will be tougher, although we might just skip it altogether (the first name we like is rare, and our last name is unique - there are currently two people in the world as far as we know who have it - so it's not like the kid will be Jane Smith and need a middle name just to narrow it down).

We're probably waiting until we meet the baby to say for sure.

Yo Becca
07-02-2006, 10:37 AM
Hey all - I love these names.

Kaliyah is beautiful

Irish names: Liam? it's getting popular, but I love it! I think there are lots of websites with Irish names.

yep - Mary Jane makes me think pot. sorry. In the south there's lots of Mary names, some of which are very interesting. We know a Mary Avnor and a Mary Leavitt (levit)

Our options:
Boy - Eyler Noordermer.
- It's a mouthful, but we'd call him Eli. Noordermeer is DH's middle name and MIL's maiden name and is a nod to his dutch family. One of DD's middle names is also dutch (Hendrika, pronounced Onj-reeka)
Henry is a possible backup name

Girl - not sure of a first name, but middle name will be Clyde (after GMIL's mother - GMIL just recently passed)
I like Kiera Clyde, but Dh is reminded of the japanimation Akira

We've limited ourselves to family names so far - or reworkings of family names. But we have to have a name we love also, so we might stray from that. (like, RObin comes from a family name on my sid e- Robert. There are 3 generations of Robert, but it's not a name I'd name a child - butwe love RObin for a girl). If this one is born in China (we're moving to Shanghai in a few weeks) we might go with a chinese name. who knows.

Also, our kids will all have 2 names - DH and I have different last names, and our kids will have his last name and my last name as a 2nd middle name.

Oooh I love Eden as a name! DH and I could actually agree on another so I am going to name the main character in my next book that, instead! lol.

So, we have currently...
Sophie Ann
Nathan __?___

Sophie we're still debating to whether to make it Sophia for when she's older and wants something more formal for her resume, but it's not like it's Timmy or Billy or Christy, right? We'll see. I love how it means wisdom! Like the sophists and like how characters in books named Sophie always represent wisdom. And both of our mothers have Ann as a middle name, so DH thought it'd be a great idea :)

Nathan seems to have just taken hold as one boy's name we actually both like that works (we have a terrible last name for matching names to... starts with a "sh" sound and is very german and harsh, one looong syllable, lol) but we still need a middle name. We're Catholic so I'm guessing we'll go with a saint's name, although I'm not sure it's required. Any suggestions?

I love the names I'm seeing here!

I'm also looking for a few good Celtic names!

My son's name is Ronan (there's a suggestion for you meggie!) and so far we like Liam, Colin, Conor, Ian for boys.

I think it's a boy, however!

I have a question for you all - do you share your name choices with people? I don't mind people knowing, but I always preface it with "I'll tell you, but we really like these names so if you don't like them honestly I don't want to hear your opinion." I tell, but I preface it with "we reserve the right to change our minds -- so if you buy clothing, blankets, etc. and he/she comes out & decides not to "fit" our name, well -- too bad for you!" For some reason I was really irritated when they wrote "Ian" on the cake at the baby shower. :rolleyes

As for celtic names, Gavin was always at the top of my list, but dh knew a kid w/ that name (a kid he didn't like). Love Liam as well, but it was deemed too "wierd." Then my sister had a William that they planned to call Liam.

My girl names are running toward romantic... I'm loving Moira, Jocelyn... it has to fit with her middle names which will be Evonne-Dawn or Evonne-Marie (My mil's middle name and Dawn Marie is my mom) The boys both have family middle names.

If we have a boy the initials would probably have to spell something (we have IMP and ASP), and possibly start with a vowel (according to dh).

I told dh we should come up with a name and say thats what we are planning on naming the baby wether a girl or a boy just to get people to leave us alone. Then when the baby is born tell them what we are really gonna name the baby and they will say, "Well thats a much better name!"

Cinnamonamon: I love moira (see my girl's name) and I actually think it wouldn't be hard to pronounce because its basically pronounced as it is spelled.

Meggie: celtic boys names: Collin, Dermot, Conor, Kieran, Aidan?

St. Margaret: boy saints names for middle name that go with Nathan: Ambrose, Benedict, Peter, Joseph?

And I definitely agree with not sharing name choices with everyone. People say some awful things about names. I feel like saying "well luckily this is not your baby and if you care so much, go make one of your own and name it whatever you want!"...

Meggie, I love the name Rowan, but personally I like it for a girl. I do know of people who have used it for a boy's name too. Sounds like it might very well have some very personal meaning for you.

Sam, hi! You know, I kind of agree about a baby "having" a name. There is along story about how Ronan's name came to be, but in a nutshell, my grandmother rights historical fiction books about Ireland for children, and when I announced my pregnancy and told her we were considering the name Ronan, she sent me a book she had published that year and I had not yet read in which Ronan was the main character with a note saying that had she had another son, his name would have been Ronan. We just knew after that happened that if our child was a boy, he would inherit the name.

Great names everyone!

Oh yeah! I've been thinking about names too. I'm hoping for a girl (DH and I disagree on "boy issues" especially circ and discipline) and so far, for girls I like the names Parker and Logan.
For a girl middle name, I'm going for Sherilyn. It is a combination of my grandparents' first names. And something else too, my DD has 2 middle names.

For a boy, I don't know about first names, I want something really unique and special. I have a lot of family that I want to honor by using as middle names. In fact, too many! So maybe I can use one of the male family names as a girl middle name if I need to.
The family boy's names I want to use are: Blake, Andrew and/or Robert, and Timothy. But I don't like any of those for a first name and it would be super-confusing because we have daily interaction with all of these family members.

I'm rather partial to Tolkein names myself. :lol And yet somehow having a son named Aragorn would be just... wrong...

I don't want to tell people, but only because I love unique names and I don't want anyone getting any ideas about poaching! :o Isn't that terrible?

Well, and so I don't hear people for the next eight months telling us how we're going to traumatize our kid. I like my rare name, thank you very much! And so does DP. :p

And, like Moira, it only gets mispronounced by idiots (there's a W in there, people - why do they think it's pronounced "Erin"??? say it with me: ARE-win. it's not that hard!).

I hear ya on the mispronoucing (did i spell that right? :lol) of names -- my sister is "toinette" poor girl, lol. and when people do get it right they insist on calling her "ann toinette."

I've recently fallen in love with "Isabel..." not sure how I would spell it, though. Dh just grunted & rolled his eyes. Partypooper. He needs to grow up & get excited.

The middle names might change but the first name are staying.

brianasmith, how about a flower middle name to go with you girl names--like Lily or Violet? I wonder what the flower is for the month of March...

Ezra is a great boy name. I love unique names! Maybe you could use a family name for the middle name...

Ladies, I changed my mind (I seem to be doing that alot lately--must be a pg thing:dizzy:). We're going with Rowan for a boy. I know it's becoming more of a girl's name these days, but I just can't get it out of my head. That's got to mean something, right? I'll let DH think he won this arguement (that way I can choose any middle name I want!:lol ).

Oh, man! All the middle names I like end with an "an" sound like Rowan and that would sound weird, right?

Rowan Kieran
Rowan Eamonn
Rowan Adian

I need a good Irish/Celtic name that doesn't end in "an"...

for girls
Josephine (Josie)
Rachel
Jenna
Erin
Olivia
Lauren
Alexandra (Lexie)
Sydney
Amelia
Reese
Luci
Alice
For boys:
Charles (Charlie)
Brady
Oscar (NOT going to happen but dh wants it in the running. I think it's cute but not a favorite of mine)

My faves of all so far are Samuel Chester, Samuel Charles, and Charles Samuel.
For the girls I love Myriam Samantha, Jenna ____, Olivia____, Rachel___, Sophia Faith.

Brianasmith, thanks for the suggestion! I know Elizabeth Ann is pretty common, but it's beautiful I think--very classic. I'm having a hard time coming up with a middle name for Olivia--Olivia Lynn is very pretty, but I love to choose middle names that have some meaning to us, and it doesn't. Hmmm.

Ok, forget that last post of mine. After posting I looked at the SS website, crossed off all the really popular names, crossed off ones I wasn't in love with, and ended up with....
Josephine Jenna

Josephine Jenna

Samuel Charles

What do you think??

I LOVE Josephine - you could call her Josie but I'm not a fan of the two J's - My name is Keri Kadi and I don't really like double letters.

I really like Samuel Charles but I like Samuel Chester better because it is a super cool name and the lead singer of Linkin Park :thumb

My name list is in my real computer that is in the shop right now :( This one is my son's and SUPER slow and I don't have any of my good stuff on here.
These are some names off my list that I can remember:

Boys:
Vincent
Quentin
Rogan
Jonas
Dylan

The boy middle name will be Frederick

Girls:
Elisabeth
Elise
Jillian
Amelia
Danica

The girl middle name will likely be Joy unless we chose Jillian and then it would be Kate.

We have like a 99% chance of having a girl. It is a joke that all nukes have girls, and we have seen it to be mostly true. So we concentrate on girl names first. We will think of boys later, jsut in case.
But I love, I mean LOVE
Gwendolyn and maybe soething like Irene or Iris for a middle name. My husband thinks we should name her Gwendo Lyn. He really thinks that he is funny, :duck: I don't.
I do love Moira though. You know, everyone will mispronuouce just about every name. My name is Valerie, easy right? I get Valorie, Valarie, and even Valeria. I don't understand people. But we are still very early, we didn't come up with Laylas name until I was about 7 months. We really disagree on these things.

Arwyn
07-13-2006, 12:34 PM
Keri - the only combo I don't like (out of the girls) is Elise Joy, unless I'm mispronouncing it. Is it supposed to be 3 sylables?

Gwnedo Lyn. Yea, not funny. Gwendolyn I like. I would never use it (too girly - I like gender neutral names generally), but I also like Gwyndydd. The "dd" is pronounced "th", so Gwyndyth.

I think we've more or less decided on the first name, although we won't finalize the decision until we meet hir, but middle names... oy. I'm tempted to go with Lee, 'cause it'd be easy, and it's DP's middle name (I don't have one). But... eh well. We have time, right? :)

Rowan Tree

Thanks, cinnamonamon, for the list--it will take me a while to go through all of them :lol. No, our last name is 3 syllables and ends with an "ing."

Bennifer--Josephine is so beautiful and old fashioned! And Samuel Chester is tooooo adorable! You must go with those names!

VnJW--Gwendolyn is beautiful and I think Moira would work as a great middle name. Gwendolyn Moira.

brendon--Keefe! Go with that!

Keri - the only combo I don't like (out of the girls) is Elise Joy, unless I'm mispronouncing it. Is it supposed to be 3 sylables?

Actually it's two - Uh-Leese is how it sounds. I think it is more likely we would name her Elisabeth and Elise would be her nn but I also think it could stand on it's own.

We also don't decide until the end. We don't find out the sex but it's a good thing the girls were girls because we could NOT agree on boy names! I like to have it narrowed down to 2 boys and 2 girl names so we have options if the baby doesn't look like a certain name.

All of our kids middle names are after family and that tradition will continue :thumb

We have a list in word that we each add names to. My names are in pink and his are in blue so we know who added what - if we agree on a name we make it purple - I know, we're dorky :D I can add and remove MY names but I cannot remove his names and he cannot remove mine. If he tells me he really doesn't like a name and I don't love it I might take it off and vice versa. It works well for us because DH doesn't really like discussing names but if we think of something we can just add it to the list, try it on for a while and then take it off if we change our mind.

My middle name is Lee -- except they spelled it the "girl" way (I'm told): Lea I always liked it. :D FTR, my grandpa is David Lee, and my grandma is Carol : Carolynn Lea :lol Mom was ingenious for making everyone's names distinct, but also named after a family member.

We pick a 1st name we like, then make the middle name after a family member.

I think names will be hard this time around. With both of my kids I had a very clear notion of their sex and name long before they were even conceived. I felt like they truly named themselves. But this time around... I haven't a clue. I haven't even brought up the topic of names with Dh. Last time it was a major problem.

I have a short list so far, but I'm sure it's bound to go through many changes in the coming months.

kerikadi--Thanks for all the great suggestions. I like Rowan Patrick, but we have WAY too many Patricks in the family. And I agree that Finn doesn't sound too bad with a name ending in "an"--maybe because it's just 1 syllable. Keri, I agree, Samuel Chester is way better than Samuel Charles. I love it with Chester (my grandpa's name) but dh isn't convinced yet...but I bet I can work on it.
I was planning on called Josephine "Josie"--it's just so adorable! I liked Jenna only because my name is Jennifer, but I don't love it. Any suggestions? how does Josephine Myriam sound? Or Josephine Faith? I love names with a religious meaning. Josephine means "God will add, God will increase." Perfect, I think!

I love the name Elise...it's one of my picks but dh isn't too hot on it. I was thinking of spelling it Elyse. Such a beautiful name. And I like the idea about naming her Elizabeth and then the nn is Elise.

I like Rowan Patrick the best, too! Too bad it doesn't work. My second fave is Rowan Finn.

Ok, I am one of the people who would mispronouce Moira...can someone tell me how you say that? It looks beautiful the way it is spelled...very feminine, but honestly I've never known how to pronounce it (and this is coming from a speech therapist!!!)

Arwyn

In the Robin Williams movie Hook, he pronounced it more like More-ah, at least once. But I'm pretty sure it's generally Moy-ra. Yes no?

Rowan Tree
07-13-2006, 10:02 PM
Yes. Moy-ra--that's how I've always heard it said.

Mizelenius
07-13-2006, 10:23 PM
Yes. Moy-ra--that's how I've always heard it said. That's how we say it, but I've heard that when Scottish people say it, it isn't quite as harsh. Maybe because they roll their "r"s? I can roll "r"s . . .maybe I should try that! I've heard that Irish people say it more like "MO-rah" (Moira is the Scottish version of Maura so maybe they don't care.)

For ourselves, I am still pushing for Twyla, but no one (read: DH and older DD) is on board with this. I was sure DD would be easy to win over . . .with DD2, she loved "Moira" instantly and would get mad when I'd talk about other names . . .

Ultimately, though, I decided that I get to pick. So, it still may be Twyla for a girl. Callan is still a top pick for a boy, but nothing is definite!

We've been waiting for #2 for so long names are in stone.....and can still change! LOL!

Our DD is my s/n....Heaven Leigh Grace...we call her Grace

So if we have another girl her name will follow suit

Harmony Ann Hope (We would call her Hope)
Or
Jovial Lynn Faith (We would call her Faith...and hope she has a sense of humor so we can say she is our "Funny Faith" LOL! )

We haven't decided which one yet since we love them both very much!

For a boy, it's a no-brainer!

So if we are blessed with a boy he will without a doubt be
Nicholas Matthew III

Josephine Faith is nice. LOVE Josephine and Josie :love
I LOVE the name Miriam but prefer the traditional spelling in ALL names.
This is nothing personal but a pet peeve of mine.:duck: There are many names that can be spelled more than one way - Carrie/Kerry, Catherine, Katherine etc. However, when there is a traditional spelling, especially in a Biblical name I think the traditional spelling should always be used. :thumb

I like my name and it is part of who I am but it looks like my parents don't know how to spell. Carrie & Kerry are both much more acceptable ways to spell my name. There are several others - Cary, Kari etc. However, mine is the least popular. I have had to spell my name my entire life and live with people basically asking me why my parents spelled my name this way :irked:

Some names are newer and we have seen them spelled more than one way but if a name is established it should be spelled that way unless there is a reason. Elizabeth with a Z is MUCH more popular than Elisabeth which would be the way I would spell it but I would spell it that way because that is the German spelling and it is also spelled that way in the New Testament so it is spelled both ways in the Bible making them both legit.

Myriam and Elyse may be legit and I just don't know it :innocent But I am more familiar with the traditional spellings.

I guess it's a thing for me because other than a bottle of lotion I have never seen my name spelled correctly on anything. My older DD will have that same fate but DH was hell bent on her name :) I figure with her name no mater how we spelled it she was going to be spelling it her whole life anyway - let's hope she marries a guy with a short/easy last name like Smith rather than our 11 letter very German last name :lol

This name stuff is so fun though! This is one of my favorite parts of the whole pregnancy. I just called my Mom yesterday to tell her the news and she is so excited about the name - she was full of suggestions and didn't like a single one of my girl names but that's ok she just kept saying "mmhmm" :D

I kind of like unusual spellings, although sometimes they just seem... excessive... (I had a waitress once named Jaleigh. Yes, pronounced "Holly". :eyesroll)

Anyway, Keri has more visual appeal to me than Carrie. Even though they sound the same, Keri seems cooler, and Carrie just makes me think of scary psychics drenched in pig blood. And Kerry seems like a last name, not a first.

But that's just me!

kerikadi
07-14-2006, 01:40 PM
I definitely see your point Arwyn :) I never see myself as a Carrie or Kerry - I am cooler than they are :wink However, I guess the way I feel about it is that we don't live in a bubble and our children are going to meet thousands of people over the years and a child/person's name is sooooo important and such a HUGE part of a first impression.

For the record - I have a sister named Sheri and a brother named Cory so when I came along my Dad merged the two names but Ceri didn't look right and my Mom's name starts with a K so Keri it was - I also had a very long 10 letter maiden name so they wanted to keep it as short as possible :) My Mom was a nurse at the time and when she got back to the doctor's office after her maternity leave they received a brand new box of sample size Keri lotion to give to patients before they put it out on the market - my Mom said it was really weird for her to open that box just a couple of months after having me :D

Okay, after talking to my wonderful husband, a flat out NO to Moira:( He does like Gwen but not Gwendolyn, not Gwenyth and not Gwenadyth, but they spelled it differently, sorry I looked can't find it now. So in a few weeks I will probably bring up more possibilities. So anyone have any ideas for different ways we could call this child Gwen? I was thinking about just Gwen. But I have no clue how we would get a middle name in there. Our last name is just two syllables. And everything I have tried so far just doesn't work. :bang And I have like 8 more months of this. We have yet to come to an agreement over names very early. He is fine with just about everything else, but he is such a picky name person. maybe i should have started out with names I didn't like and then gave him Gwen at the very end. Last night I had a dream that I had a girl but she was early so we hadn't picked a name yet. I had a few ideas Eden Isabella but nobody liked it. My mom started calling her Isabella but I really wanted Eden. Then my mom decided that her name was going to be Hayley Hazel Elaine. ( Hazel and Elaine are my aunts names). Well, I just wanted to add...it's a fun thread!
I have five kids...boy, girl, boy, boy, girl...and now due with number six on March 22, 2007...they are named like this:

Asher Garcia
Olivia Marley
Elias Dylan
Benjamin Hendrix (a bit more of a mouthful and I've rethought it many times since and wish we had named him Hudson Hendrix, but I am an avid Felicity fan, and if you know the show, you know Ben....sigh...)
Naomi Presley (please don't say NIGH-omi or I may have to kill you...you can't imagine how many people pronounce it that way)

Anyway, you see our pattern, with the middle names, choosing a beloved musician...so I always know the middle name first for some reason...this one's middle name will be Cash...after the late great Johnny. We really love John Lennon, but seriously, I have yet to find a first name, followed by Lennon, followed by our beautiful melodic Italian last name that sounds right...it also reminds me of the dictator Lenin, so...can't happen.

This all said, I can't believe you're all thinking of names already! I'm up all night researching UC/UP....name-storming seems like such frivolity.....

THAT said, I like..
Ruby
Scarlet
are you waiting for Crimson or Vermillion(sp)? :O)
Calyra
but these are early stages, and I also don't think those sound so hot with Cash...
Boy, maybe...
Dresden
Hudson
Ezekiel or Zechariah, so we can call him Zeke!
Micah...
but I don't know....God, thanks for throwing me off on some tangent, girls!

Nicole :fingersx: hoping you will be staying with us for sure this time :D

How do you pronounce Acacia? By looking I would a Ah Kay Shuh, is that correct?
Do you know that cicada is a bug? http://www.ivyhall.district96.k12.il.us/4th/KKhp/1insects/cicada.html you may want to rethink that one. Many people love the sound of a cicada but I remember them keeping me up many nights as a child when I lived in Arizona & Nevada :zzz

Keri

Hi Ladies! It's nice to see ya'll again and thanks for the warm welcome.

Yeah. I do know that it's a bug. Sorry they kept you up at nice.

Acacia is prn like you said it. At least, the girl I know prn it that way.

My cervix feels really different than it did at this time last month, so I'm hopefull! It's really high and soft.

We'll see!

Yeah. I do know that it's a bug.

Hey grapejuicemama. I was actually originally thinking the same thing Keri said. I've loved all the other names you've mentioned in this thread, but I just couldn't get past the bug definition of Cicada. However, "Cricket" seems cute for a girl's name, so I don't know why I had a problem with "Cicada"! I think the name Cicada is prettier than the name Cricket anyway. So I think it's growing on me. :)

Well, I ran "Miles" past DH, and :bigeyes he agreed!

Ugh, ok, never mind. Scratch "Miles". Top contender is Jonas now, but I have to come up with a one-syllable nickname that we can agree on. I like "Jones" as a nn but dh doesn't. I don't like "Joe" as a nn.

What do you all think of "Jose" as a nn, (rhymes with "hose")?

Hi Astro-

Jonas is a nice name. As far as single syllable nn, Jose works, but I'd be sure it's a soft "s" as in snake and not a hard "z" sound like hose-hoze.

On another note, my DH said Miles is ok, but he totally nixed all my other boy names. He doesn't even want to talk girl names really because he's hoping that if we are pg, we'll have another boy. I guess he doesn't want to jinx himself. I'd like another boy too, but girls are so much more fun to name!

I LOVE Jonas - it is at the top of my list :thumb
I personally don't care for Jose with Jonas, is there special meaning behind the name? Is it important to stick with JJ initials? Here are some other one syllable options:

Gage
Max
James
Abe
Boyd
Kurt
Neil
Paul
Quinn
Tate
Vaughn
West
Zane
Zeek

Good luck!

girl - Eva, Emma, Zoe, Sophie, Lucie with Kathryn as MN

Boy - Samuel, Sawyer, Ezekiel, Boone with Paul as MN

Also, Cicada.

Um. It sounds pretty, but you know that old joke about the girls named Rubella and Anesthesia? It's pretty much the same thing as naming your kid Locust. I hate to say this, but if I ran into a Cicada, my first thought would be, "Wow, kid, your parents must have been ignorant," and my second would be, "Darn, those bugs are loud and irritating." Not exactly the best first impression.

Oh, Keri, I just didn't word my post very well! :lol I didn't mean Jose as a middle name, I'm concerned about one syllable nicknames. "Jonas Jose", oh my, no, that wouldn't be his name. It would probably be "Jonas Ray" or something. Good one-syllable nicknames are important to me because I'm too lazy to use entire names :lol -- I always call everyone in the house by one-syllable versions of their names.

Ohhhhh I see, it makes a little bit more sense now.

If you don't want to use the big huge 5 letter Jonas :wink Maybe you could give him a middle name like Ray so you could call him JR? I have a son named Brendan and I call him B sometimes :) Though generally I am the opposite of you and use the longest version possilbe - usually their first and middle but sometimes their first with another nick name tagged on the back = Brendan Bear, Avery Bean, Keriannie Banananie Butt :lol

Oooo, my niece (whom I met this weekend and is the CUTEST baby EVER - at least until, oh, next March!) is named after the two grandmothers, but still gets called her womb name of Petunia a bunch. Since birth, that has evolved into Princess Petunia Pees-a-Lot.

As someone with the pets Chewbaca the Wookie-Poodle (called Chewie), Senor Medianoche del Diablo the Stinky Sheep Dog Cat (called Midnight), and KC McChaos the Kansasian College Dog of Eastern Indiana and Way West PDX (called Chaos), I thoroughly approve of these types of nicknames. :D

EvolvingMama, love what you've chosen. I especially like Eva and Sawyer.

didkisa, "Bubbles" -- cute, made me smile. :) Are you talking about a code name for the babe before people know you're pregnant, that type of thing?

My son's name is Ethan Roger. DH and I have totally different tastes in names. I like more hippie-like names, and he likes more traditional names. Ethan was a compromise. Roger was DH's grandfather's name.

If we have another boy, he will be Alexander Michael. Michael is the middle name of many men in my family, so it's kinda my answer to Roger. I think that Alex fits well with Ethan.

We're very stuck on a girl's name. VERY. DH would prefer Alexandra, but I don't want for my daughter to have a feminine version of a man's name. We're both okay with Hope as a middle name, though that will depend on the first name, of course. I've been leaning towards Serena lately, though I also like Keira and Maya. I love Sierra, but DH won't even consider it. :( I gave up on my Buddhism-inspired names when I was pregnant with Ethan. There's no hope whatsoever for those.

I'm definitely determined to avoid first names that have been used in the family already. Though, honestly, I LOVE Mary Jane. The two women I'm closest two are my grandmother (Mary) and my foster mom (Jane) and I'd love to name my child in their honor. But, there are obvious issues with that name...

YOu could always go Jane Marie. I think Jane Mary is a little short sounding, but to stress the last syllable like in Marie, I think it sounds pretty nice. Just and idea. I agree with feminine verisons of male names. I admit to using one though. Natalies middle name is Alexa. But for some reason it seems very feminine to me. Oh don't ask me, this pregnancy has so gone to my brain this time:dizzy:

savmay, that's so cool that caleb told you his name in a dream! That would make this so much easier. :lol

So, there was a poll in another forum about how to pronounce "Annika". Well, that threw me for a loop because Annika is my top pick for a girl's name and I thought there was only one way to pronounce it (like AHN-eh-ka.) Well, apparently a sizable percentage of people (in that poll anyway) would pronounce it like Ah-NEE-ka. Not what I had in mind. So those of you who have named your children with names that have more than one pronunciation, or a common mispronunciation -- did you regret naming them that? Does it bug you to have to correct people, or is it just not that big of a deal?

didkisa
08-03-2006, 12:05 PM
I have one of those names, Astromom, and really hate correcting people. OK, correcting once is one thing, but when I say my name then someone misprounces it right after I tell them how to pronounce it, it really bugs me. The worst, though, was a woman that flatly told me to my face that I pronounce my own name wrong! :irked: I was working in retail, so I said, "well, if I'm too incompetent to even pronounce my name correctly, then I'm probably too incompetent to wait on you." and turned and walked away. :lol

If it's a friend and they still have difficulty remembering how I pronounce it, I usually just tell them to call me by my nickname, Coco.

BTW, my name is pronounced KOH-leen, not KAH-leen, or KLEAN. It's the minority pronounciation, but it is also correct!! :p

DD's name is Eirian, pn AR-re-an. No one knows how to pr it - the true pn is AIR-re-an, but I didn't like the negative conniotation (sp?) - it sounds like the Aryan nation. So I changed the pn. I sometimes wish I would have spelled it Arian, but it isn't a major concern. She goes by Ari anyway. That is easy enough that she can spell it on her own :lol

We'd already picked names for our first, I thought I was having a girl but my sister said I was having a boy (she's been right 10 for 10 of my parents grandchildren) so we went and picked a boys name. Not two months later I had a dream about a little boy and told him that his name was Aidan Sean, which is the name we picked and sure enough, we had a boy. Of course he was blond in the dream and has fiery red hair so not sure what that means :lol

For the next one we decided to keep the girl's name that we picked the first time : Rhiannon Patricia and we've been coming up with boys names just in case : Liam Isaiah or Liam Gabriel, we're not sure which. We're going to wait until the end to find out what gender but I may ask my sister again ;)

We didn't even discuss a name for my dd until I was in the third trimester. I imagine we'll do the same this time. I am latina and want a name that can be pronounced in Spanish. There will be no middle name. DD is Solana (we call her Soli). Our short list for boys' names last time was Gabriel or Felix.

The funny thing is, when I look at Soli, she looks like a Soli to me, but she also looks like a Ruby.

DHs dad's name was Walter, which I kind of like, but DH is not too keen on it. I'd love to name a son after my father, but my father HATES his name, and goes by another name entirely.

I am latina and want a name that can be pronounced in Spanish. . I am not Latina but I am "trying" to raise my DDs to be bilingual (the older one is rejecting Spanish at this point :( . . .doesn't mind when I read books in Spanish but screams when I try to talk to her). Anyway, that is part of my criteria, too. I want the vowels to be pronounced just about the same in both English and Spanish. I love so many Spanish names but they sound awful in English. Paola, Paloma, Xochil, Mariana, Mariela . . .the list goes on for me of names that I love but can't stand hearing in English. It's just too bad!

DH and I are struggling with girl names - he thinks all of my girl names sound like porn stars :rolleyes He's effectively ruined Savannah for me.

This is the first time I have had names picked out since prior to even TTC. For a boy it will be Joshua Irvin. Josh is just one of those names to me...never met a Josh I didn't like. Irvin is my grandfather's name on my mother's side. Both my parents claim he is the nicest man that ever walked the earth, so I figure 2 good names with a good history for me. I have thought of maybe Irvin Joshua instead, but he would still go by Josh either way.

For a girl it will be Catherine May and we will call her Catie. I just love the name Catherine and I was almost Katherine, but my parent's chose Sara instead. My mom has always said if I had a little sister her name would be Katie, so maybe she has just influenced me over the years!!! May is my great grandmother's middle name on my mom's side. Our Sofie's middle name is Paris so we thought it would be kind of cool to use a city name again for a middle name.
