View Full Version : Pirates!
sevenkids 07-08-2006, 09:50 PM Part 2!
Fab u lous! I loved every minute of it, despite the lousy reviews. Don't bring young or sensitive kids, it's pretty scary at times, but what a movie! Everything I love in a movie. Action! Romance! Johhny Depp!
Two thumbs up!
sapphire_chan 07-08-2006, 11:21 PM It does have some grossness. I'm a pretty wussy type so I was really glad I chose not to get popcorn or a drink. YMMV, naturally.
That movie rocked.
sevenkids 07-09-2006, 06:34 AM I loved the Jamaican witch, she was great.:thumb
poppywise 07-09-2006, 06:48 AM LOVED it. i could just eat johnny depp with a spoon. :p he's yummy.
sevenkids 07-09-2006, 07:15 AM I don't even need a spoon, I could just hold him in my hands and lick him until he's done.:yum
**guest** 07-09-2006, 07:34 AM I don't even need a spoon, I could just hold him in my hands and lick him until he's done.:yum :lol Can't wait to see it.
sevenkids 07-09-2006, 09:19 AM :lol Can't wait to see it.
the movie or me licking Johnny?:p
**guest** 07-09-2006, 12:53 PM Er...the movie. I don't get into 'watching'. ;) :lol
LadyMarmalade 07-09-2006, 03:13 PM Thanks for the good review - everyone else I know who has seen it thought it sucked and has said not to waste my money. It's good to know it might be worth watching!
sevenkids 07-09-2006, 03:31 PM Thanks for the good review - everyone else I know who has seen it thought it sucked and has said not to waste my money. It's good to know it might be worth watching!
I loved it! It was funny, full of action, special effects were amazing, and full of Johnny Depp!:thumb
I'd go back to see it again tonight if I could!
I think the movie was great, too! :thumb I do have this warning for all of you, though.
If you have young or very sensitive children, I would think twice about taking them to see it. Some of the characters are extremely gross-appearing; I know I would have had nightmares if I had seen it as a child.
For older children, teenagers, and adults, the movie's great! And Johnny Depp  :Kiss :throb :yum
DebraBaker 07-09-2006, 06:51 PM I liked it.
I was disappointed in the ending in an Empire Strikes Back sort of way.
sevenkids 07-09-2006, 06:59 PM yeah, the ending was a bummer (not a bad ending, but one that didn't let you take in a good breath and exhale). I think that, since they filmed parts 2 and 3 concurrently, they kinda forgot we would have to wait a year for the sequal. It was a "tune in next week" kind of ending.
poppywise 07-09-2006, 07:10 PM i agree the ending was a little too...contrived, but i was really happy to see geoffery rush whom i love! already can't wait til the next one..
tinybutterfly 07-09-2006, 07:19 PM Great Fun!!!
I would have LOVED to just stay and see it again immediately after I saw it the first time! Well, I would have needed a bathroom break, and more popcorn...:lurk:
A double feature of Pirates and More Pirates would have been fab!
DaryLLL 07-10-2006, 11:22 AM I thought Johnny was was too cartoonish. He took the swishy schtick too far. He lost his hotness and command. You could never believe he was a captain. He was almost becoming a Barney Fife or something. He looked a bit old and wrinkly. :(
There was not enough romance/sexual tension between Will and Elizabeth.
It was too long.
I had a hard time with the garbled accents.
I liked the crustecean look of the Dutchman crew, but there was too much screen time wasted on Davy Jones, while the heros didn't get enough. Just too many characters in general.
But still, of course I am glad I saw it. I would go again just to take in more of the "stuff."
UnschoolnMa 07-10-2006, 01:43 PM My kids loved it. :) I have yet to see it.
ChristyM26 07-10-2006, 02:17 PM The script wasn't as good as the first one but watching Orlando Bloom makes up for that. I loved the part after the credits.
sapphire_chan 07-10-2006, 08:59 PM The script wasn't as good as the first one but watching Orlando Bloom makes up for that. I loved the part after the credits. :bang :bang :bang I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!!!! We left too early.
(Of course we also left too late since we ended up with 15 minutes to get my dh to work across town--I found I can do 70 in a 55.:blush)
PM me what happens? Please?
2Sweeties1Angel 07-10-2006, 09:42 PM We saw it last night and loved it! I did have to explain the concept of "long pork" to DH and DS, LOL. I can't wait for part 3 and more Captain Jack!
The theatre was literally packed and some idiots brought freaking babies with them. If you want to bring your baby, whatever, but take it OUT when it starts crying! Don't just sit there and shove a bottle in it's mouth and hope it will shut up, for crying out loud.
mama-a-llama 07-10-2006, 09:47 PM I loved the part after the credits.
WHAT!!! We had to dash out to relieve the babysitter, since they started the movie late :irked: PM me what happens too!
DebraBaker 07-11-2006, 05:39 AM :bag: Count me in with the idiots who didn't get to see the after-the-credits performance.
So....WHAT HAPPENED?
primjillie 07-11-2006, 11:48 AM I loved it too!!! We went to the first showing late last Thursday nite (and felt as old as the hills with all the teenies!) and the time just flew by! It was just as wonderful or maybe even more than the first. Johnny Depp is perfect as Jack Sparrow. I agree with the warnings for children - it was pretty gruesome and violent at times - I even had to shut my eyes a couple of times! Of course, I am a wimp! I am longing to see it again so I can see all the stuff I might have missed the first time.
lorijds 07-11-2006, 01:17 PM My dh and I were like, ehhh, not so good. The kids liked it. The plot line was strange, in a film where everything is over the top, I STILL felt like some scenes were just too weird (I'm sorry, the entire native story line was just plain stupid), and the action scenes weren't up to what I expected. I didn't like Davy Jones' crew (they were just too strange, too much slime and vague features, they looked so unreal they didn't even seem scary to me, just gross and stupid). I didn't like the ship, either.
Too many loose ends, too many plot lines that went nowhere--either make a great action movie, or make a movie with a great plot, but don't do two things half-assed. The light-hearted humor that made the first so good was dull this time around, Jack Sparrow's presence was weak, the slap-stick and editing was rough and jerky, and in the end I wasn't really rooting for anyone, just checking my watch to see if it was going to be over soon.
And I found myself questioning aspects of the movie, scoffing over it. Why wouldn't killing Jones kill the Beastie? Why wouldn't it free Will's dad's debt? What is it that Jack Sparrow can't make up his mind about? Why did he suddenly fall in love with Elizabeth and seem to be so interested in sacrificing his honor and his friends? Im ean, in the first movie, he came out in the end as a brilliant mastermind--he APPEARED to have tried to sacrifice his friends, but in reality and in retrospect, every one of his actions were actually honorable and were in an attempt to make sure that everything turned out right at the end. In this movie, it seems like he was only in it for himself. I didn't like his character nearly so much; he just seemed like a selfish, dishonorable pirate, not the swashbuckeling, funny hero I loved in the first one. And sure, the first movie had some loose ends and completely unbelievable scenes-but the action was so good, and the dialogue so snappy that you forgot about the irregularities. With this one, the dialogue just didnt click for me.
I'm hoping this movie will look better in retrospect, after the third movie comes out. The first stands on it's own, it's a great action-adventure movie, with lots of triumphant good-guy scenes and humor. This one just flops in my opinion, and unfortunately can't stand on it's own.
Not that it was horrible. I just found that I was often bored. I didn't laugh nearly as much. I rolled my eyes alot. The first movie made scary scenes funny; created these absurd situations that you wanted to believe in and so you forgave any absurdity, and had interesting characters. I didn't feel sorry for Davy Jones. I did for Captn Barbossa, in the first one. He was the bad guy, but a likable one. Davy Jones, no. I know he was supposed to be; and maybe in the last movie something will come out that will make him seem more redeeming. But not in this one. I was just disappointed in general. I really loved the first one, and I really wanted to like the second one--but my response is definately lukewarm at best. I have no interest in seeing it again. I watch the first one probably once every 4 weeks or so.
I did like the end, though, when a certain man makes an unexpected appearance (sorry, I don't know how to do spoilers, so I will leave it at that).
So, what happened after the credits? We didn't stay. Come on, someone, put in a spoiler and tell us!
Sisyphus 07-11-2006, 02:31 PM ITA with LoriDJS and DaryLLL... it just was NOT up to par.
Way too much Davy Jones and crew (and way too much of the old guy on Jack Sparrow's ship... what was his name?) and TOTALLY not enough of Orlando and Johnny.
It was so stupid that Orlando and the down and out admiral (again, I'm terrible with names) was WAY TOO LONG and I thought the effects in that scene and the scene at the end with Johnny Depp and the sea monster were crappy at best. I mean, you could TOTALLY tell it was blue screened... it was completely flat and lacked any "life".
I really expected more from this film.
Can someone remind me what happened to G. Rush's character in the first one? I haven't had a chance to re-watch it yet but I could have sworn he was run through with a sword and killed... of course, there were so many people run through with swords and killed I could be wrong LOLOL.
I thought the Jamaican "voo doo" lady was the best character in the movie... except, in the ride, that part is supposed to be in the Bayous of Louisiana, (hence, at DLand, the Blue Bayou restaurant overlooking that part of the ride) so that didn't make *any* sense to me at all (of course I always thought the ride was a bit odd to be set in Louisiana, anyways).
wsgrl84 07-11-2006, 08:22 PM definitely watching it soon!
Thanks for telling me theres something extra after the movie...
marybethorama 07-11-2006, 09:06 PM There was not enough romance/sexual tension between Will and Elizabeth.
I don't think they had much chemistry.
marybethorama 07-11-2006, 09:09 PM someone PM me please!
what did we miss?
mommy2evan05 07-11-2006, 10:15 PM I left too early what happened after the credits??
someone PM me please!
what did we miss?
Ditto! What happened??????
mommy2evan05 07-11-2006, 10:17 PM I don't even need a spoon, I could just hold him in my hands and lick him until he's done.:yum
MMMMMhmmmmmmmm!:wink
mommy2evan05 07-11-2006, 10:19 PM yeah, the ending was a bummer (not a bad ending, but one that didn't let you take in a good breath and exhale). I think that, since they filmed parts 2 and 3 concurrently, they kinda forgot we would have to wait a year for the sequal. It was a "tune in next week" kind of ending.
that's exactly what I was trying to tell my hubby! he was really confused by the movie, and I told him he'd like it a lot more once #3 was out!!!
PancakeGoddess 07-12-2006, 05:42 AM :bang :bang :bang I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!!!! We left too early.
(Of course we also left too late since we ended up with 15 minutes to get my dh to work across town--I found I can do 70 in a 55.:blush)
PM me what happens? Please?
ah, me too! someone PM me? My kid had to pee baaaad so we got right up.
I liked it, even thought the gross stuff was kind of cool gross, and I normally cannot stand that kind of stuff. As in, hated the LOTR grossness with my whole self, ick.
The hotties were very hot. To bad I think that Knightley is awful. Am I the only one? Cannot stand her - ruined pride and prejudice for me too.
The jamaican woman - *awesome* - wowee, that was the coolest part.
And yes, it was way way too long. By at least 30 minutes.
DaryLLL 07-12-2006, 05:43 AM We won't have to wait a whole yr for the next one, for them to redeem themselves. I understand the release date is Memorial Day. It was supposed to be xmas, but last summer's hurricanes held up filming.
Lori, good review.
sevenkids 07-12-2006, 06:34 AM I love Keira Knightly, what is it about her people don't like? I hear a lot of people say sthey don't like her, but I think she's fabulous. She's very young too, only 21, I think.
Renee Zellweiger, now her I can't stand!
ChristyM26 07-12-2006, 10:09 AM I think I sent a PM to all who asked for one... Let me know if I didn't and you still want to know. :)
PancakeGoddess 07-12-2006, 10:23 AM me! I don't think I've had the PM
cdmaze 07-12-2006, 08:33 PM Yay! I'm seeing! I loved the first one...it could be half as good and I'd like it!
warriorprincess 07-14-2006, 01:16 AM We really enjoyed it. To be honest, this is not a movie we went to for plot, but rather for swachbuckling and cool effects. And hot guys of course.
I did take all my kids, and none of them, even the 4 year old, were bothered. (They weren't bothered by LotR and RotS, either). Of course, my 7 year old DD's response when we saw the trailer in Jan ( she was 6 then) was , "Look, Mommy, a Cthulhu pirate!" so you know my kids are pretty warped.
primjillie 07-14-2006, 03:56 PM I've got a genuine question for those who take their young children to these type of movies - do you you think your children don't mind them because they have seen so many of these types, it doesn't bother them anymore? Or are young children so difference in their tolerance level? I always sheltered my own from violence, sex and gore until they were old enough to deal with it, and we do the same with our granddaughter. After seeing Pirates, I KNOW she would have been so upset we would have had to leave and possibly wouldn't go to bed at night because of it. But, she doesn't really watch anything but G rated movies, so maybe that is why. I am not questioning anyone's parenting, I am just genuinely curious! What is Pirates rated by way? (I can hardly wait to see it again!)
the sunshine 07-14-2006, 10:24 PM Way too much Davy Jones and crew (and way too much of the old guy on Jack Sparrow's ship... what was his name?) and TOTALLY not enough of Orlando and Johnny. or Keira.
I agree.
They should have taken out most of the killing people scenes and a lot of Davy Jones crew and it would have been a better movie. It was too mean.
mother nurture 07-15-2006, 03:02 AM The script wasn't as good as the first one but watching Orlando Bloom makes up for that. I loved the part after the credits.
Darnit!!! I told dh we should stay for after the credits and then as they were running I said, "oh there isn't going to be anything.":irked:
mother nurture 07-15-2006, 03:10 AM Will someone pm me, too?? I would love to know what happened!!
Also...I always think Johnny Depp is sexy, but I definitley LOVE Orlando!!
JenLove 07-15-2006, 09:37 AM I would like a PM to know what happened at the end too. TIA! :)
Stayseeliz 07-19-2006, 12:06 PM I think there wasn't supposed to be any chemistry b/t Elizabeth and Will because they were trying to make the point Jack made: Elizabeth is bored and wants to know what it's like to have freedom and be able to do as she likes!
I loved it from start to finish! The only thing that bugged me during the whole movie was that I couldn't talk DH into going and getting more popcorn!!
It did leave some loose ends but it's the 2nd out of 3. Of course it's going to have lots of loose endings.
I for one love Keira Knightly!! I also love that "Mr.Collins" from P&P was in it and I liked their scene together!
I just thought it was great!!! And I would also like to know what happened after the credits!
MamaHippo 07-19-2006, 04:58 PM I don't even need a spoon, I could just hold him in my hands and lick him until he's done.:yum
I will fight ya for a lick too
armonia 07-21-2006, 09:21 AM they were just too strange, too much slime and vague features, they looked so unreal they didn't even seem scary to me

!
I loved it...eventhough I agree with many of lorijds comments.
Also, my 5 year old laughed and laughed. When Captain Jack got slimed, she thought that was the funniest thing she ever saw. She laughed and laughed. There was also this man that was sitting close to us, and he laughed at almost everything, which made my daughter laugh too. It was so funny because you could hear him, and then my daughter would laugh because he did, and they were the only 2 in the whole place laughing hysterically. It was so funny. I told her if it was too scary we could leave or to close her eyes. She looked at me and said "It's just costumes, MOM!" so it wasn't scary for her at all.
minkajane 07-21-2006, 09:23 AM I totally understood why there was little to no chemistry between Elizabeth and Will - it was to play up the chemistry between Elizabeth and Jack! I LOVED that storyline!
I really enjoyed this movie. I thought the ending was wonderful. It leaves you begging for more. The only thing I didn't really get into was the whole rolling wheel fight. Over-the-top, IMO.
Please PM me what happens after the credits!
Stayseeliz 07-21-2006, 10:25 AM I really enjoyed this movie. I thought the ending was wonderful. It leaves you begging for more. The only thing I didn't really get into was the whole rolling wheel fight. Over-the-top, IMO.
:truedat:
I thought that was silly too!
Gemini 07-22-2006, 10:44 AM Shoot, I missed the closing credits scene too. PM me too please?? :innocent
Okay, I got confused a bit on some stuff. (Just scroll your cursor over the black text while left clicking.) Why did the Black Pearl run aground on that island? What were they going there for?
Question 2:
I must have missed a bunch of stuff regarding the heart and why they are all cursed or something because I'm lost on all that stuff. Why are they that way? Why is it the heart is keeping him/them/Cracken alive?? Who's heart is it? See...I missed a lot.
Question 3:
So is Captain Jack falling for Elizabeth? Is that why he went back to the ship because the compass knew his deeping want or whatever was her? Was Elizabeth really falling for him to or was it just a ploy to get him locked on the ship? Either way that was a pretty serious kiss she landed on him. Damn.
Ultimately, I got confused on what different peoples agendas were throughout the movie. It just seemed to move kinda quickly. It was great to see some old characters like the two funny pirates and Commador Norrington. When they first introduced the Lord whatever guy I was bummed that they said something happened to Norrington. (mind you I never looked up who was the cast of this movie so it was all a surprise to me to see the old faces). I just wish the two funny soldiers were in it though.
Oh, and why was it that this Lord guy knew so dang much about the chest and the compass?? Pirate in disguise perhaps???
And last, to do spoilers type [ spoiler ] text [ /spoiler ] without the spaces before and after the brackets.
Arduinna 07-22-2006, 11:17 AM I liked it, but it wasn't as good as the first one. It was too long and I actually started getting sleepy in the last 1/2 hour. I thought Orlando looked better than I usually think he does. Much more mature. I liked the look the Davey Jones crew though.
And the end after the credits. My mom saw the movie before I did and told me I haddddd to wait and see the end. What a freaing waste of 10 minutes of credits. It wasn't even original since I knew that that was the fate of the dog anyway after the last scene he had been in being chased by the tribe. Plus it was what a 10 second scene after all those credits and a too long movie? I wish they had showed Jack or something as a hint to his fate.
JenniferH 07-22-2006, 11:50 AM Two high points of the movie for me:
-Johnny Depp
-Orlando Bloom shirtless
Other than that I was pretty disappointed. :lol The movie was too long and 45 minutes could have been shaved off.
