My dh is considering applying for a position with an international agency in The Hague. It would be a 3 to 5 year term. We live in Canada and I had always planned to homeschool my shy, mildly autistic son. Homeschooling is quite popular here with good networking amongst parents and support. Apparently, homeschooling is not legal in the Netherlands except in exceptional circumstances. Does anybody know any one who homeschools? What are the schools like? How much english is spoken compared to dutch? I see there is a Waldorf school in The Hague. The website is in dutch so I cannot find out anything about it.
Thoughts?
My son is 3 1/2 now
Many thanks

I can't really help much, but didn't want to leave you with no replies. As far as I know, home schooling isn't legal at all here. It's news to me that there's an exception for "exceptional circumstances." I've personally been half avoiding reading the home schooling forum because I don't want to start wanting to home school since I've believed that the option wasn't legally open to me.
We intend to use Montessori schools. They are extremely popular here, much more so than in the States. It's possible to pursue Montessori education all the way through high school.
My husband is Dutch. If you have any specific questions about Dutch language, I can engage his translation services for you.

Thank you Sarahmck and Pumpkinseeds for your replies. Those links look great! From what I understand, homeschooling is an option if there is not a school within 20km of your home which is consistent with your religion or "life philosophy". Shyness, fear of bullying, or special needs status are not reasons to be exempt from school according to the Education Act. Apparently the success of your request to homeschool depends on your presentation and the mood of your CEO. We are determined to homeschool and have a year to figure out a way around the rules. What if our "life philosophy" includes homeschooling? I am hoping that if we sign up with Oak Meadow, which is internationally accredited and includes grades/testing, the CEO might relax a bit.
Thanks again,
Leigh Anne
