Dh and I suspect our autistic ds is also quite gifted. At the least, we expect hyperlexic, but his pattern matching is just off the charts...to the point our OT is having problems finding something that will challenge him in that area.

With the exception of people who are with him a lot, most people look at us like we are delusional when we try and say he is gifted because he hardly talks. However, when asked to name something he appears to read the captions under the pictures instead of just looking at the picture and will choose "hamburger" off the menu by pointing to the word instead of the picture.

Is there a way to test for IQ with a verbally delayed child? It is affecting his therapies and I can see potential for extreme difficulties in school settings. His language and social skills are around 18 months I would guess, but he can do 1st & 2nd grade educational software and puzzles without any assistance.

btw...I am borderline gifted...a bit over the threshhold, but certainly not a genius. DH, however, is well over genius range, and had many of the classic problems of super gifted kids. He is now a university instructor (computer science) and did research with NASA over the summer if that gives you an idea of the genetics

I've got a 6 year old niece with Asperger's who's recently been enrolled in a cyberschool. She's taking a combination of kindergarten (handwriting), first grade (math, science, history), third grade (language arts), and fourth grade (English, literature, reading) classes this year alone. :lol She's got a damn near eidetic memory, yet she can't be trusted not to run into the street when she's outside, and doesn't remember to look when she's getting out of a car on the wrong side. :bigeyes

She's definately twice-exceptional. :thumb\

On to your question: Yes, there certainly is, but I've got my hands full at the moment. Hopefully someone will be able to help you before I get back. :thumb

Yes, there are non-verbal measures of IQ/ Performance. I have had 3 non-verbal children in my teaching career, (after the first one, the other teachers kept sending them to me) and it was very difficult to assess them any other way. I have also had a brain injured child who was co-dominant in 2 languages but could not function adequately to take a verbally based test. He was assessed as well. Talk to a speech and Language clinician about this . I can't remember the name of the battery of tests, but they are normed just like any other performance test. A child psychiatrist might also know, but it was always the speech teacher that gave them at my school.

My 6 year old has anxiety/ocd and is verbally gifted. Although the diagnosis of does not sound like one which would count as an exceptionality, after living with it, it qualifies in my book!

There IS a non-verbal test used to identify G/T in this school district. I'll see if I can find the name tonight.

I think there's something called the Raven's Progressive Matrices - would that be it?

I think we may be dealing with a very mild version of 2E here - my ds was a somewhat late talker and very early reader, who does some weird involuntary verbal reversal stuff (like "Grandma is your child...no...I mean Grandma is your child...I mean...") and sometimes has word-finding difficulties. Hyperlexia was very firmly ruled out in his case, but I've always felt that something was getting in his way. We don't have it all figured out but we're thinking of getting him evaluated soon.

How old is your ds, BTW?

My ds is 4.

Thank you for the information. I will talk to his Speech Therapist then.

He is such a complicated child to parent, but at least I have *some* practice after being with my dh for almost 17 years. :lol

I can't find the name of the test. Arg. I don't THINK it was the Ravens, but I'm not sure.

Found it- it came to me in the bath tub :lol

Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test

They say it's not an IQ test, but an ability test though.
