Okay, ladies. Give me a list of the acronyms that are going to commonly occur on this board and I will make them a sticky so we can all figure out what everyone is talking about. I've seen DS used for downs syndrome and dd used for something. If we could find something else for these two it would be good since ds and dd commonly refer to our children.:)

PT = physical therapy
ST = speech therapy
OT = occupational therapy

IEP = individual education program (?)

EI = Early Interventions


That's all that are coming to mind right now.

These aren't acronyms, but might need definition:
feingold diet: A diet specified for kids who have adhd and also autistic spectrum kids. It is a removal of all salicylates. www.feingold.org

Stimming: a repetitve action that autistic kids do: it may be rocking, finger flapping, figeting with an object in their hand.

Perseveration: a type of "verbal stim", I guess. When a person repeats a word, phrase or question over and over

I think DS is Down's Syndrome, and ds is dear son. I forget what the DD is for, but dd would be dear daughter.

I can't think of anything else that hasn't been mentioned already.

For some people (not me, necessarily) "aspie" is a very in-group term--a lot of people WITH AS are really put off by its use by people outside of the community. I'm not saying don't use it here, just know that in the outside world someone might feel belittled and offended.

On the autism note, it's worth mentioning that persons with autism, some of whom regularly frequent this forum, have stated their preferred term is Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) rather than Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Motheringdotcommune condemns disblism along with racism, sexism, heterosexism and most other "isms"--generally, in practice, that means that the members of the group in question are allowed to decide the preferred terminology.
