View Full Version : Polite Suggestion About Signatures
F and L 09-22-2006, 02:18 AM Some feel it's best to turn off signatures which refer to children or pregnancy for all posts in infertility or loss boards. Even if you disagree with doing this at all times, it might be worth considering doing so if you're posting in a thread about pregnancy loss or a treatment that isn't going well or a thread started by someone in obvious distress and anxiety. Not all women feel this way, but some can find it very upsetting, for instance, to post about an IVF treatment that didn't work and be confronted with somebody's pregnancy ticker, however well meaning that pregnant person is in expressing sympathy; it's impossible to predict the circumstance and state of mind of the person who might read a given post and accompanying signature - and it may not be the original poster who is distressed, but somebody else who is turning to a given thread. I know nobody means to cause upset in this community, and that this is an issue that some simply haven't thought of. It's really easy to disable your signature, and it will only be turned off for the particular post. You just turn off the 'Show Your Signature' box under 'Additional Options' under the box where you're typing your post.
Theresa9599 09-22-2006, 07:52 AM I can see your point  However, being that this is a parenting board, it seems kind of like asking a lot to expect others to remember to turn off their signatures every time there is a chance that someone *might* be offended by it.
Another option would be that you could turn off all signatures, so that if you find other's offensive, you wouln't have to worry about it at all.

I don't think it's that someone might be offended, it's that it could be a painful reminder to someone who is grieving or hurting. I can completely understand the request to be considerate of others' feelings. When you can remember, of course, we all slip up sometimes.
alegna 09-22-2006, 08:51 AM The way it works, I believe, is that when your sig is off- it's off everywhere- then when you turn it on, it's on everywhere. So even if it was off while posting, if you turned it back on, it would appear. Just like it changes everywhere when you change it.
(sorry, my sig will show up....)

Calidris 09-22-2006, 08:53 AM No I think its on a post by post basis....

Oh, I thought you could click it and it would or wouldn't show up only in that specific post. Thanks.

beckyand3littlemonsters 09-22-2006, 08:57 AM :wink
seems to work
Calidris 09-22-2006, 08:57 AM yep, it's post by post, no sig here, but its still there on my last post. As it's right there below the quick reply box now I guess it's pretty easy, unless you find the post through New Posts and don't realsie where you are posting of course, or generally if you are not a regular on those boards and thus don't know the "rules".
F and L 09-22-2006, 09:00 AM You can turn off your signature on a post by post basis. You get a big box in which you 'Reply to Thread', which is exactly what I'm typing in now. Then if you scroll lower down on your screen, you get Additional Options. The Show your Signature box will have a green mark in it. Just click on that box, and the green tick goes away. Your signature will be off only for that particular post.
alegna 09-22-2006, 09:19 AM Very interesting- thanks!
