Okay, sometimes I hate being/living in such a small state, because I rarely find someone online from here. Anyone?

Hi. We just moved to Minot, ND. We'd been in MS for the past six months, but before that we lived in Fargo and Minneapolis.
It's nice to be back, but I agree, there aren't many people here.

Hey, did you get any snow? I just don't get it, 90 degrees on Sunday, and snow on Wednesday!!!

plum
04-17-2003, 03:38 PM
Yes, we got the snow last night. I was so mad because I just want it to get warm. Then this morning I drove my younger sister to New Town (about 60 miles away) and we were in heavy fog.

But now it's sunny, so maybe it'll stay nice.

Last July we moved to IN (where we live currently) but we are orginally from MN. We moved here from East Grand Forks, Mn which is on the border - my dh spent 5yrs. in school in Grand Forks, ND and we may be going back there at some point for grad. school - so I thought I'd say Hi and for some reason I miss Grand Forks, lol.

I am living near Grand Forks. Been here for over two years and still not used to it; I am a big city girl. Or5iginally from Chicago and then moved to the Twin Cities.

Nice to see there are Mothering mamas in this pretty conservative state!

Dang, I forgot I posted this thread.

kidatheart, have you gone to any of the meetings at The Stork's Nest? I emailed someone at meetingmoms.org about another playgroup in Fargo, but never heard anything back(I asked if it was attachment parenting minded, apparently it's not)

BTW, I'm outside of Fargo about 20 miles.

My family hails from Bismarck and Mandan, tho I am a Navy brat and married into the Navy also. We are currently in Washington. I visit twice a year and sling my babies all over Bismarck - I am the only slinging mama I ever see :bf Not sure when I will get there this year, tho my grandmother is begging for a summer visit. So we'll see.

This thread is kinda old, but I thought I'd jump in and say hello.

I am in Minot -- DH is in the military and we moved here about two years ago. I am pretty much hating it, but I'm trying, trying, trying to find something positive about living here. The eight inches of snow we got last week didn't help.

Did I mention that we moved here after fifteen years in Europe? It's a bit of a culture shock, and I still haven't gotten over it. Never thought I'd be one of those military wives who whines, bitches and moans about their posting, but here I am whining, bitching and moaning about our posting. Can't wait for retirement -- only three more years!

Anyway, hello other ND mamas! Nice to know I'm not the only "freak" around here!

Now that I've heard more about MDC I just had to reply! Currently my husband, our lovely new baby, Eileen, and I live in Grand Forks but we will be moving to Camarillo, CA by the end of the month as employment is changing for my hubby. Just thought I'd post quickly in this thread. Hi Emmama...and thanks for telling me about the board!

Hi! I am here, LOL. I'm Jen, I live in Bismarck. I'm 30, a certified birth doula and SAHM to two great boys, with another baby on the way. My kids will all be 25 months apart!

Do any of you Minot people belong to LLL? I might be at the meeting tomorrow night (if there is one, LOL), I'm having trouble reaching the leader to find out if there is one, and where.

Anyway - pleased to be here!

plum

i go to the LLL in minot. tomorrow's meeting will be the one i miss, though. we're going on vacation. i'm not positive, but i'm sure there is one tomorrow. it will be at the minot library at 7 in the basement.

so, maybe i'll see you in august!

I'm new to the boards and live in Grand Forks, ND. We actually chose to move here for DH to open his chiro. office. All of his family is from this area, although I'm a Minnesota Twin (no really, I'm a twin from MN). Nice to *meet* all of you on the boards! (Although I've already met some of you in person! lol)

Here's another ND joke for you (my favorite):

North Dakota is the only place where you can watch your dog run away------for three days!

actually, sandee doesn't run them anymore. the leader is a woman named chrisanne. sandee still takes calls, i think, but she isn't active since her kids are older. shame, too, because she is really cool! i'm planning on going to the next one so maybe we'll see you there!

Yes, I have had a wonderful phone conversation with Chrisanne, about a half hour long! I just read in yesterday's Tribune that she had her baby, how exciting!

Anyway, I will most likely be going to the LLL meeting on 7/19. I'd like to join it, and also try and advertise if there is a newsletter. I hope to see you there!

Hello there, My name is Joy, I have 3 kids, 17,7,5, We live in California, buts its just getting so expensive to even make ends meat we were thinking of moving. My inlaws are from bismark, most of the family is still there, minot, bismark, grand forks is were grandma and grandpa are buried, My family is here, well mom and brother and an aunt and uncle are here, few cousins, I'm really thinking of outside of bismark, we would like a large home with some land, my only problem is I've never really been around snow or cold weather, do you think I could make it there. LOL I have an at home online business that will just move with me, we would have to get my hubby a job, he's worked 27 years at the local grocery store out here and dosnt want to lose his retirement, anyways just wondering what you all thought would be the best thing. My 17 year old is disabled and will need services, a group home and all. not too happy with california and that now. is it better there??? thanks for all your help.

north dakota is so cheap to live in. it's one reason why i'm hesitant to move out of state when dh gets out of the air force. you could rent a decent little house for $500; my parents rented a three bedroom townhouse for $650 a month on a golf course. for $650, my sister was able to rent a dumpy little 2 bedroom apartment in minnesota.

it's clean, safe and i've never really had a problem finding a job. there is no shortage of housing in fargo, either; in fact, it's undergoing a great change right now and is much more metropolitan. i lived in fargo most my life and it is so different now. there a lot of small towns here that are dying and people buy houses there for very cheap.

downsides? north dakota is very... white. very scandinavian. i think the population is something like 98 percent white? so, diversity isn't a strong suit, except in minot where the air force base is. not knocking white people at all, but when an area is so homogenous, openmindedness isn't much of a strong suit. the winters take some getting used to. i, for one, love the winters but many people have a hard time with it. it's so flat the wind just howls over the prairie. lots of snow and it's winter almost nine months of the year! in fact, today the temperature is like 58 degrees. it's august and dd is wearing a longsleeve shirt and overalls! we generally have snow starting at the end of october and until april and sometimes even may.

but, hey, you can still write checks anywhere here! after living in the south and in MN, that still blows my mind.

I know the Fargo area has a good group home system. My 22 yo cousin is autistic, and in a group home now, and his parents are happy with it. You can get a nice sized house for 70-90K in Fargo, cheaper(sometimes much cheaper) in surrounding communities.

I totally agree on the job market, Fargo is one of the few cities that never had that down-turn in the job market that so many other cities have dealt with.

Hello, well we were thinking of moving there to bismarck well outside there in the 58503 zip, I have 3 kids the youngest 2 will be in elementary. Dh says in 5 years but then the little ones will be too old and have there friends so I'm just not sure what to do, living here in california is soo expensive I have to work and I own 2 websites. I want to be able to work in my home and take care of my kids.. oh well its still in the making and I hope to be able to make the move some day..

Wow really, we plan to drive out there this summer and stay for a couple of weeks and look at homes while were there, dh has some family there on a farm that we stayed with last year. I did notice the houses stay on the market awhile there, theres one on I think its 78th street that looks really nice. lots of land and all. I am worried about the cold, I've never even been in snow, LOL most my friends say I wont last a day in the snow, LOL. is it really that bad, LOL

Actually realestate moves really quickly here. I put my house on the Market January 3rd and I am working on closing the deal this week. This area is growing rapidly. About the cold I am not sure, I grew up in Ontario canada so I am used to the cold, LOL. It certainly seems like winters are long and summer is way to short. The last 3 years our winters have not been to bad but prior to that were pretty cold. 78th is about about 8 minutes outside the city, and at the rate the city is growing it won't even be that far soon!

Wow, Did you deliver at medcenter too? that would interesting. Small world.

JenDoula
03-14-2005, 07:19 AM
Actually I delivered at St. A's this time. I had my first two at Medcenter, though! The reason being, there's only one doctor I put an ounce of trust into at Medcenter, whereas I have pretty good relationships with most of the doctors at St. A's (because of my doula work).

Actually we had planned a homebirth this time, but I only had a 3-hour labor and the midwife lives 3 hours away! So when I started to feel pushy, DH drove like a madman to the hospital, LOL. I just wasn't up for giving birth unassisted, even though the midwife said we could've done it no problem. I had gestational diabetes though, and I was the tiniest bit afraid that he might be on the big side. He was, but I got him out just fine anyway! I almost had him in the car! :LOL

I'm so jealous, all the new ND members here are too far away from me!

Anyone else following some of the bills going thru the legislature? I have been, and the one I really wanted to pass has! It is SB 2208, and it is the child passenger safety bill. The law has been upgraded to require carseats until 7 years of age, or 80lbs/57 inches. Finally!! :thumb

Hi ND mamas (specifically those close to Fargo/Mhd).

I'm in Vancouver BC but hail from a small town near Fergus Falls, MN (not far from Fargo) AT ANY RATE, I'm going to be coming to town July 14-28 (not free on the weekends) but am wondering if any mamas get together during the week in Fargo or Moorhead??? My sister, aunts and uncles and grandma all live in Fargo, so I'll be spending some time there.

I've got a 10 year old boy, nearly 4 year old girl and a one year old boy. We're pretty much unschooling TCS sorts of folks...which is VERY RADICAL in that area from what I remember. Sigh :) But I'm hopeful to find SOMEONE I can talk to when I get "home"

Any of you close enough to Fargo Moorhead want to do a mini gathering at a park there someday next week? I'm staying at a lake about an hour and a half away from Fargo, and we're planning to come in to town to...what else??...shop next week. It would be SOOOOO GOOOD to meet up with other mdc mamas. I'm MISSING my friends and it has only been a week here.

message me through mdc. I have no idea where or when...just want to see if anyone is available

mamma_joy
10-12-2005, 11:12 PM
There are several opportunities for you in Fargo! I'm in Grand Forks, but I know lots of those "like-minded" in Fargo. There is a breastfeeding support group that meets the 3rd Tues. of each month, an Attachment Parenting Support Group that meets the 1st Sun. of each month and has a playdate scheduled during the month, too, and I'm sure that there is more for your liking! Some of them even come up for our 1st Thurs. of the month La Leche League meetings.

Just send me an email and I can get you times and places (I should say I'll put you in contact with the one who has that info.).

The Stork's Nest is closed so the above meetings are held in a Dr.'s waiting room (a great open space!).

Oh well, maybe if I ever come to Fargo soon ( I have family there) I'll stop in for a group for one of the things listed, meet some new folks. :)

Anyone heard of meetup.com? I've got a group just started there for Fargo/Moorhead. It sets up times when we can get together, chat, let our kids play together, whatever. Anyone in the area interested, take a look and I'll set up another meetup for the month of March. (Last one was this past Sun, March 4th, but since we were so new few people had heard of the group and were able to make it.) That last meetup was actually a meeting about bill 2377 in ND, but not all of them will be about that. I'd just love to get together with other moms in the area.
