I'm so sick of all the Anti-bactiral liquid soaps on the market. But, I love the convenience - also, I got a really cool soap foamer which the kids LOVE.
I'm using an all natural soap from a health food store, but it's so $$$$ Anyone have a recipe for liquid soap? Lala, Chanley? Really curious about this one....
Dr Bronners makes liquid soaps that are natural and they smell great, and you can usually find them in bulk (to save money). Our co-op sells tehm in bulk, and so do our local soap stores, so check around.
I have melted glycerin soap down and added water to it to make a liquid. It worked ok, but I doubt it would work in the foamer? Maybe ...

Thanks Lala, I'm going to try the Dr. Broners - wonder if I could add a scent? Think I'll try and let you guys know....
On a side-line - nice to finally hear your voice Lala!

OT but dd LOVES the foamer things...she is one and she loves to have her belly foamed...she rubs it in and then demands more...LOL

I haven't tried making soap in a blender....
some of the dr b soaps are scented already (almond...yum) but I would not recomend teh peppermint for the kids. It is kind of strong
:)
It was great to hear your voice too!

I've actually never tried this but have wanted to for ages. As an alternative to those anti-bacterial hand soaps, chop up a bar of soap like Ivory into little bits. Then put it in your food processor and chop it up until it's very fine. Then add water enough to make it a gel-like substance. You may have to play with the amount of water and mix it now and then until you get the right consistency. I can't remember where I read this at, but I'm pretty sure it's the right instructions.
Good luck to anyone who tries it...and please let me know if it works!

ok, got out my chopper machine and chopped up some soap. I added warm water and it made a nice liquid. Then a few days later it got all gummy and screwed up my foamer. I think it was the glycerine but not sure?
Oh well, try, try again....

well I tried that with my homemade soap and it got all gummy...do you just have to dump in TYONS of water to keep it from gelling???

I have since tried the shredded soap with water and for me it only worked for about 3 days. Then it got hard and clogged up my pumper.
So that's a warning to anyone else who feels like giving it a try!
sorry for ruining so many soap dispensers...!
p.s. I made it in a ceramic dispenser and i ended up putting it in the microwave to soften the goup to get it out. maybe heat is the key and it'll work in the summer?

Hello, this is an interesting thread. My mother was very frugal (out of necessity) and I remember that for a while we had to save soap scraps. I can't remember if she made them into a new bar or into liquid soap. I don't think it worked, however, because she only tried it once. That was more than 20 years ago.
More recently, only a few weeks ago, I was planning a cub scout den meeting and thought I'd try carving a bar of Ivory soap into a polar bear like it shows in the cub scout book. But Ivory is a very soft soap and I absolutely couldn't make a carving out of it because it kept falling apart for me. Maybe a different, harder brand of soap would be better to use for the carving project.
So I got this great idea (I THOUGHT it was a great idea!). I'll just put all these Ivory soap chips in the microwave, melt them and make liquid soap. **BIG MISTAKE!** Ivory must be extremely high fat, because it instantaneously quadrupled in size and poofed all over the inside of the microwave. Never again! Don't put Ivory soap in the microwave, you'll be sorry!!
Then I thought (yes, I'm nearly as frugal as my mother) I don't want to waste all these remaining soap chips (the ones that _weren't_ microwaved), so I'll just shake them up with a little water and funnel them in a liquid soap pump dispenser. Well, it ended up being harmless, but never really has dissolved in water, so there are still little white chunks at the bottom of my liquid soap dispenser.
Maybe the blender/food processor idea would be OK, altho I'd hate to permanently wreck a small appliance just to save a bar of soap. If anybody has successfully turned bar soap into liquid soap at home, I'd like to know what brand they used. Ditto with the soap carving.

well, when making laundry soap I did get a bar of dr bronners soap to melt down and gel but since I then dump a bunch of the washing soda in it I don't know if it stays goopy or goes into the snot stage...
when doing it I grated a bar of dr bronners then dumped some water in it and then microwaved at HALF POWER until it melted...stir...nuke...stir...nuke....
I think any soap gets all scary if you microwave it at full power...but i am afraid to try...heh

curious about the effect on your processor after chopping up soap?? I'd love to make my own liquid soap, but am loathe to hurt my brand new, precious Cuisinart.

well I don't have a food processor...I have one of those choppy thingies, ya know the ones you have to go BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM it doesn't work very well cause the soap keeps getting stuck in it....
you can just grate it up and but that takes a lot of work...I just use my french chef knife for everything.

I don't think I'd like to use the snot looing stuff either:yuck .
I just wish I could find something natural. I just found an orange liquid soap - it smells wonderful, but it made ds get heives - so that's out too.....
I have the Blam, Blam, Blam Blam (that's so fun to type!) chopper - I LOVE it for the soap - now if I could only get it to liquify....
