And here it is, that oft-used disclaimer-opening: I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, so if it's not, kindly move it to the appropriate place. Grazie!
I've read a lot on MDC about taking papaya enzymes to help heartburn during pregnancy, so when I called my natural remedy-friendly OB to verify with her that it was OK for me to try it, she said she couldn't find anything about it in her herbal remedy book (?) and did I have any "literature" that could support it? Can anyone direct me to such resources?
Thanks so much!

Papaya Juice is a traditional remedy to induce labor. So, while papaya enzymes are helpful for indigestion, I would not suggest taking them during pregnancy.
Though, when my son was teething and cranky, I would give him dried sulfur-free papaya sticks to chew on and that helped him.
For heartburn, eat smaller more frequent meals, stay upright after meals, and try eating a little yogurt or milk.

I am a midiwfery apprentice and we always tell our mamas to use this for HB. it works really well for them.
We always have them take the pill or capsules with papaya enzymes.

I am pregnant and have constant HB. Eating small meals, sleeping upright, eating dairy provides zero relief. I take several pills a day and my midwife says it is fine. Can't hurt.
I don't have any supporting literature though.
Good luck.:thumb

If doctors are allowing pepcid ac for use during pregnancy, papaya enzymes definitely are not going to hurt you! I take the enzymes to with no big deal, if you are that worried you can always eat the papaya or pineapple. I also read that chewing apple peels is also a great way to help. In Susun Weed's book, "Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year" she mentions quite a few options. You can get it at http://www.ashtreepublishing.com/bookshop/childbearing.php. I highly recommend it as I have been reading it for years looking up infor now that I am pregnant. I trust what she has to say over and doctor.

Thanks for your replies ... I've been taking the papaya enzyme with great success for HB and even tummy troubles such as that which might induce one to take simethicone (AKA Gas-X) :o, but I was hoping to find some sources to be able to show my OB to support the suggestion.
(Pineapple has helped me a lot, too.)

With my last pregnancy I used papya enzymes for that all-day yucky sickness since it helped my food digest faster. It was great.
I'll have to pop out to get some more soon.
