Anyone have a natural heartburn remedy? I'm 36 weeks pregnant, out of Tums and I don't want to take anything else. I tried drinking some milk but this heartburn is pretty severe. I'm miserable :fever:

I've heard that apple cider vineger works great for HB! I haven't tried it myself though. :(

Almonds work wonders for me! They are even better than Tums. Good luck! Hope you feel better soon. :)

If you have access to a store that sells herbs and homeopathics, you might want to see if they have a product called 'Acid-Ease'. We've used it for years in our home...as my husband has had lots of digestive issues over the years.
It's very gentle and yet effective. I've only taken it a few times with each pregnancy, when the indigestion or heartburn flared, but it always took care of it in just a few minutes.
If they don't have that product (I have a hard time finding it these days...) the other thing that we use is peppermint leaf capsules. They seem to do a great job calming everything quickly as well.
Btw, DH has overactive acid-producers in his tummy and irritable bowel syndrome and thanks to these herbal and natural products he's not on any pharmaceuticals.

Papaya! you can either eat it fresh (yum!!) or get papaya extract. I've had horrible heart burn (i'm at 30 weeks right now) and have fond the papaya to work really well for me. It's especially great when it's nice and cold. But, be forewarned - fresh papaya gives me horrible gas! I'm not sure if the extract would do the same.

All of the suggestions so far are great -- I have tried them all! I had terrible HB with my first child (I think he was up much higher). My best remedy, though, is the unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the MOTHER. That is very important. You can get Bragg's brand at any natural foods store. Regular Heinz or whatever won't do it. I only get HB very occasionally now, and the ACV works very well.
Another great remedy (for SEVERE HB) is fresh cabbage juice from your juicer. It is sweetish, and I mix it with fresh apple and lemon, as well for taste. It doesn't taste gross. If you are at the stage where it is so bad that you don't mind the bother, it is truly a great remedy. It is so powerful that it is curative (over several weeks) for ulcers.
I hope you feel better soon!

I second the papaya! I actually just chewed papaya tablets I found at the natural food store. They were easy to carry and I took them everywhere in my last trimester! I also did not worry about having too many in one day.

I have found that soy milk coats a little more than cow's milk and can help with HB.
but the funniest thing, because i just ran out of tums the other night (i've had to take 2-3 tums per week, usually only one at a time for a month or so now) and my husband had some alka-selzer laying around. i read the box to see what's in that junk, and it has asprin so obviously i didnt take it. but you know what the main ingredient is? sodium bicarbonate--aka baking soda. and citric acid (weird, eh?). So i got some baking soda out of the cupboard and mixed about 1-2 tsp into some water and drank it. yes, its nasty. it tastes like salt water. but it worked right away! i've used it a few nights now with both heartburn and reflux (burping up acid--eeeeeeewwwwww so nasty!). what could be cheaper and easier to come by than baking soda? i cant believe i never knew of this before. i've used it for cold sores and for UTI before, also.

I'd avoid tums as they contain (last time I knew, aluminum!)
This works great and it's organic :)

tums don't contain anything like aluminum. they are just calcium carbonate (chalk).

I .. third?.. the papaya. I got chewable papaya extract tablets from my midwife center and they have saved me from some horrible HB.

I had horrid heartburn with my last pregnancy. The BEST thing that I could take was baking soda. On the side of the box there's a recipe for how to use it as an antacid. It tastes terrible, but it works wonders. HTH!

I personally 'swear' by Chia Seed gel.
I mix 1/3 cup chia seeds with 2 cups water and stir like crazy. Then I refrigerate this 'gel' in a glass jar for up to 2-3 weeks.
I take 1 TBS a night, mixed in a bit more water to thin it down for drinking. If I take this nightly, I do not have acid reflux (I'm almost 38 wks preg. now too).
If I eat late, or something that usually really sets me off, like pizza or tomato sauce, I take 1 tsp of the dry seeds, mix in a bit of water/juice, stir for a few minutes and drink asap (It will absorb more acid).
The beauty of Chia, is that it's super nutritionally loaded (esp. for pregnant moms) and does not mess with your 'acid pumps' in your stomach, which can lead to redundant cycles of reflux....
You can find them online or at most of the bigger health food stores! Do not use the seeds treated for making the 'chia pets', but consumption quality seeds. :)
