I am 29 weeks along and take a prenatal and a fish oil capsule daily. I read that because fish oil is a natural blood thinner and inhibits clotting, that pregnant women should stop taking it in their last month.
Is this true? If so, would you recommend a supplement to the fish oil, or should I just drop back down to only the prenatal vitamin?
Thanks.

It is a rather mild anticoagulant. I was taking 4gm of fish oil a day when I went through a plate-glass door in April. The bleeding was only a little more than I would have expected. If you are taking fish oil in pregnancy, make sure it is one that is molecularly distilled so it is free of the impurities and toxins found in cold water fish!!

Thanks for the replies. How do I know if the one I am taking is molecularly distilled? I am taking the "Nature Made" brand Fish Oil Capsules that you can buy at CVS, etc.

If it doesn't say molecularlly distilled on the bottle it's probably not. That's something that a company would be proud of and would want to put on the bottle. I'm thinking if it's a CVS brand it probably isn't. It will say on the bottle if it's free of heavy metals and pcb's. If it doesn't say it--don't take it. You may be causing more harm than good with an inferior fish oil.
I took fish oil all the way through my last pregnancy, about 4 grams a day. I did read somewhere toward the end that fish oil can also increase the gestation period. Do not take MY word on that, though. To me that fact would not be enough to make me quit using fish oil. I'm going to have to research that again--it's been awhile. My son was born at almost 43 weeks. I would not allow induction. He was a big baby, 10 lbs, but I don't think that's a bad thing at all:)
Okay I looked up the gestation thing. Google "fish oil increased gestation" and you'll find what I'm talking about. That would be great, also, for someone concerned about preterm labor.

I'm taking one that's molecularly distilled. Since I'm having a surgical birth I'll stop taking it about a month before. Thanks for the info.
