ok, so i know this stuff is an Australian product. i've heard about it here and there. i found it at a store here. and i'm curious, so i bought some.....so......what do i do with it? :lol

it smells dreadful. i've heard of Vegemite sandwiches. do you just spread it on bread and eat it? :dizzy: what other things do you put on the sandwich, or is it just the Vegemite plain?

also, is it politically correct to refer to Australian people as Aussies? or is that something you can only do if you are Australian?

thanks so much, and thank you for your patience with my ignorance :)

I've only seen it spread on toast. It's definately not for me.

Make toast and butter it and then spread a very very thin layer of vegemite on it. It's salty and really taste pretty good. So, I"ve been married to an Aussie for 10 years almost and my kids eat it too..but I really did like it even way back when we first met! Honest!

Oh, love, love, love. Actually I am a Marmite eater (the UK equivalent). Marmite is high in B-vitamins. I read that it was developed during WWII when there were food shortages. It was the leftovers from making beer and they figured out it was nutritional. (Not sure how true that is, but I like the story).

I have never met a second generation Brit who likes Marmite, so I have been working really hard to get my DS to eat it, and he loves it. you've got to have a taste for salt. Like the pp said, you have to spread it thinly on toast. I was never a huge fan of it on bread (untoasted) except at my grandmothers, where we would have Marmite and lettuce sandwiches for tea.

Ok, now I'm hungry.

If, god forbid, you don't like it and don't know what to do with your container, it makes a good soup base.

hmm, interesting. spread thinly it might not be that bad. it does smell strong! and thanks for the suggestion about the soup base! great idea! tell me how you baste chicken with it? do you dilute it any? or just slather it on?

i've heard that story about being the dregs of beer, too, but i forget what product it was in relation to. maybe it was vegemite, i dunno.

thanks!

Oh I love marmite - shame it's off the menu now that we're gluten free. It's the best spread thinly on hot toast with loads of butter...or fresh sandwiches with butter and a light spreading....yummm

I read a rumor somewhere that Vegemite is being banned in the US? And that customs officials are searching Aussies and Kiwis coming to the US especially trying to catch it on them. Anyone hear something about this? I might have been dreaming. :lol

I should have looked before. Easy enough to find:

http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/vegemite.asp

Apparently there were real news reports that it was happening, but the US says it's not true. And Vegemite is going to not be available soon in stores anymore in the US, but you can bring it over with you for personal use. Weird.

well, i can't imagine why; it's just yeast. but if it isn't going to be sold here, i guess it's just because the people here do not eat it if it's not from McD's :lol
present company excepted, of course :wink

i found mine at the discount/salvage store. i didn't see a date on it; i should probably look. how bad can it go?

ok, curiosity got me up out of my puter chair. it's dated 15 september '06, and it cost me $2.

but before i saw it at this store, i'd never seen it before at all. anywhere.

I love it, Mum used to put it in our cereal as babies, seriously it was one of my first foods (after BM and formula). We put it on toast or sandwiches, it's great on sandwiches with cheese and/or lettuce or celery.

DH is not so much into it...we think it's because his parents were English and didn't eat it every day like mine did

maybe i will try it on my toast in the morning. do you put butter/margarine on first?

thanks,

I put butter on first and for your first time, just use a tiny bit...Ive heard that it can take some getting used to trying it as an adult.

Put the butter/marj on first, for sure. It makes spreading easier.

We love our vegemite, altho the sodium levels do concern me, so I try & limit how much the kids eat. A thinner spread is better, but that said we eat bucketloads of the stuff. I reckon we probably eat 500 g (about 1 pound) of vegemite a month- that's two kids + two adults + random guests & kids friends, but nonetheless a lot of vegemite....

Ah well. Guess we're not short on the B vitamins. :lol

Yeah god, we love it here too. On toast is yummo, but my absolute fave is toasted sandwich with vegemite and melted grilled cheese. Mmmmmmm....

DD loves vegemite too - she has it often on a sandwich for lunch.

A spoonful of vegemite is also great in the gravy pan!

I love it on toast or a cheese & vegemite sandwich. Other uses are: if you are into pruning, it's great on the plant wounds eg: bonsai root pruning. It's high in vitamin B, so great for root regrowth in plants.
When I was a kid, my mum used to put it in my mashed potato & of course then I'd eat it,lol.

It looks like marmite is older than WW2. You got me interested!

I think that both marmite and vegemite would be yummy on a sandwich with mayo or vegenaise. Now I am going to have to go test my theory with my giant jug of vegenaise. I wonder if people will have to mail order vegemite. I know all the HFSs around here sell/sold it. Hmm.

well, i'm getting used to it. i wasn't much impressed with my first taste. WAY too salty! i think i laid it on too thick. but i have this whole jar, so i decided to try to get used to it, and......now it's growing on me! :lol i'm actually liking it! :o

oh well. i hope if i get too attached, the store i got it at doesn't run out. it doesn't look to be too popular, as there are still plenty of jars left.

thanks for all the help!

How cool to come across this old thread!

My kids also like vegemite, butter, & honey sandwiches. :hide:

Yum. Sugar plus sodium & fat, all the basic food groups, right?

:duck:

I guess I'm just pleased that they devour fresh green salad & water as well.

yum! i was reluctant at first too, being from the states. i came here to NZ to travel & after smelling it was convinced i'd never like it, but now add it to toast regularly! now that i live here it almost seems like a rite of passage. =) i tend to eat marmite just because of the B-vitamins (though it does have sugar & vegemite does not), but my kiwi partner is a loyal vegemite supporter.

my favourite: toast with tahini, marmite/vegemite, avacado & sprouts

definitely just spread it thinly...it has a strong flavour & is very salty...you don't need much!

It's good to think of vegemite as a savoury spread.
So there are many combinations of things to have it with.
I really like avocado and a thin spread of vegemite on bread/toast.
With cheese on toast.
On crackers with lettuce and tomato.
My MIL said she used it in her babies vegies after she had mashed them.To add flavour. :dizzy: I think it's way too salty for babies.
ENJOY!
