I'm only 10 wks along, but today I was told by a friend that I shouldn't be standing for hours at a time, which I do at my job; I'm a cashier and stand up to 6 hours at at time... is it too early to be worrying about this, or is she right? she says I should quit my job.....

Not to scare you, but I was waitressing my first pg, and went into pre-term labor at 24 wks, cause I was on my feet for too long of periods...Talk to your boss, maybe if you can sit down every hour for 10 mins, that would help, drink lots of water, and lots of healthy snacks...all things I *didn't* do, but wish I had in retrospect!!! Respect your pregnant body...btw, congratulations!

okay that does scare me...i'm going to try to talk to my boss, but my job is a very "professional" one, so they dont like me leaning/sitting/blah blah infront of customers... so tell me, what happened when you went into pre-term labour..is the baby okay?

She is a beautiful 33/4 yrs old! I went into bedrest, and had her at 37 wks...she was fine. Opened my eyes though...You do have to respect the fact that your body is not just yours anymore...Is there no way to go somewhere for a sit down? Your boss should be able to bend the rules for you, as you are with child. I am pg with number two, and sit for 12 hr shifts. I get up every hour and go for a walk, and my night shifts have been cut to 8 hr shifts. They are accomodating me, because they really, kind of have to. Get a doctor's note, saying you need to sit every hour or so...see how that goes...

Good luck,

While preggo with dd#1 I was a cashier and worked 6 to 10 hours a day right up to a month before she was due. The only reason I stopped work has my hips really cause me alot of pain during pregnancy.

Neither my midwife or Doctor mentioned that standing would cause me any problems. The dr did say that most anything I did before pregnancy I should be able to do during pregnancy as my body would be use to it.

I did sit when needed towards the end but only because of my hips causing me so much pain.

I was working as a hairdresser 8 hours a day with both my pregnancies. It was harder on my body the second time, but both kids were fine.

My sister had 6, and she was working at 7-Eleven for the last 4. She was on her feet for long periods of time, working 12 and 16 hours shifts, and working right up until she went to labor for most cases, and was two weeks overdue. When I was a waitress, I worked with a mom worked right up until her due date too, and I remember the night before she went into labor (past her due date), she was lifting and doing as much as she could, trying to get herself to go into labor. I guess it worked. :)

Anyway, I think you should talk to your OB or midwife about it. As long as you aren't having problems with your pregnancy, I don't think it should be a problem, but you might want to ask a healthcare professional. You could have some undiagnosed condition that might be exacerbated by all the time on your feet. Plus I think it is harder when you are standing in place for a long time, as opposed to jobs where you are on your feet, but can walk around.
