My hubby is Australian.
We have lived in the US for the past 5 years.
I was trying to think of something I could surprise him with that is an Australian Christmas Tradition. I know when I was down there we just went to the beach and hung out with family. But, I was trying to think of something special.
Thank you!

My dh is Aussie too and we've lived in the US for almost 10 years. We've gone back for a couple of Christmases with his family. I asked him about traditions because I really could only come up with crackers ( you know the wrapped tubes that pop when you pull them at the ends with a suprise in them). He said Shrimp. His Mum always makes Christmas pudding, but that takes months of planning I guess. Is there an Aussie bakery near where you live? Do you get that Aussie mail order catalog? Sometimes the British shops carry a few Aussie things as well.

I would also say Pavlova (actually not hard to make - just looks complicated!!) and King Prawns (Shrimp? but has to be the big ones...) with cocktail sauce!!

:yeah: :yeah: :yeah: what they said! lol I'm the other way around, american married to an Aussie, living in Australia. The prawns & pavlova are DEFINITE musts... it just isn't christmas here without them. I would say a trip to the beach the day after xmas lol but I doubt that's practical there :wink

We have two different traditions, depending on where we spend Christmas. If it's in a cooler place like the mountains, we do a traditional English dinner- turkey or duck with all the trimmings. CHestnut sauce, bread, mashed potatoes & gravy, christmas pudding, with red wine & sherry. If we're in a hot place, like at the beach, Brisbane or at home (like this year) we do a cold seafood lunch- prawns, bugs, scallops, oysters- plus cold salads & cold, cold white wine or beer.

Pressies (gifts) are opened on Christmas Day, Boxing Day (Dec 26) we usually spend doing a little bush walk, or walk on the beach somewhere. Also, there's the cricket to watch.

hth. :)

I think our traditions involve lots of seafood, pavlova, trifle, and champagne...and cherries and mangoes for dinner on Christmas Eve - but that last one is pretty much just us.

Prawns, BBQ, beer, Christmas Pudding (does NOT take months of prep ;)) and watch the Boxing Day test. Surely some channel would show it over there?

That's us! :lol
It's just not christmas without the prawns and cocktail sauce or cooked on the bbq.
We usually have a big lunch - ham, turkey, pork, what am I talking about?? We NEVER stop eating over christmas!
