Hi, I had a quick browse on this board and can only wonder if any Irish moms are on. I got myself registered and would prefer to chat with moms in Ireland... feeling a bit disappointed with the lack of posts here. I am from Dublin with a 2yo DS. Anyone out there interested in posting on this board with me? Thought it worth a shot before I move on to something else...

Hello
Im an Irish Mam of one daughter age 11 months old and would love to post - though i find i don't often get time to use the Internet and Im new to this site too so still finding my way around it and how to use it. Have a question actually if anyone can help me at all - my daughter has had huge problems pooing - she has always been breastfed on demand, on solids since about 8 months (i tried at 6 but she wasn't interested so left it for another while), but only eats stuff like pears, apples, millet etc - leavingout wheat dairy et al til she is a year as her dad has asthma. I really don't know what to do - i tried homeopathy - that worked for a while, but then she starts getting really solid poos again and having trouble pooing, recently i tried acupuncture, but she got so upset with the needles and am a bit worried about the herbs as they do contain a very small amount of alchohol - anyone any other suggestions or have ye used TCM with your children, should i be worried...anyway any suggestions greatly appreciated
Thanks a mill

Mary, just an idea, but is she eating a lot of bananas? Bananas can be very constipating for a baby.

I am Irish, in Ireland. I've been reading for a while and now, I've finally registered. This is a great place for finding out about less than mainstream parenting practices! :hippie :twins:

HI
I am from Fermanagh, N Ireland and moved to Orange County a year ago.
My Hubby and I have been trying for a baby for almost 2 years,
I found out two weeks ago that I was pregnant, we were delighted.
I started bleeding a week later and an ultrasound showed clots around baby but a heart beat. The Doctor advised to rest and come back a week later and gave me hormones to take. The bleeding stopped and we were so happy but I was very careful and wouldnt even hold my dogs leads incase they pulled me too much, I went for the scan again yesterday and she could not find a heartbeat, my baby died at 6 weeks old. I was so sure it was a baby girl and now have to get her removed on Tuesday by D & C. I am so scared but would rather do this than pass her normally. I cant get my head around the fact she is dead I wanted a baby so much. My hormones are all over the place and I cry if someone looks at me wrong. I hope the D & C takes away the clots so that I can have a baby full term soon. :(

Oh, Tanya...I am so, so sorry. :(
I hope you continue on to conceive and have a full-term pregnancy. You and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers. :hug

I'm from Cork, living in Pennsylvania though. Left Ireland almost 10 years ago. How things have changed there!
Is it hard to meet AP parents in Ireland? I lurked on rollercoaster.ie for a while and saw so much CIO stuff.

Well, I'm American, but my partner is Irish. We live in Portlaw in Co. Waterford (I promise you there are few attachment parents around these parts!) and we have a 4 month old baby girl. If there are any Waterford mums out there, feel free to contact me!

hello, hello!
my husband is from dublin, and we're planning on moving back there in 2009, maybe... depends on if we can afford a house or not! we're in colorado right now. we met and got married in ireland. i lived in galway for two years.
i am curious about birth in ireland. our dd was delivered in a birth center without meds and is not vaccinated. we plan on having four more, and if we move back to ireland... i think i'll have to opt for homebirth to get the births that i would like.
we're having her christening in dublin in march, and i'm also wondering about nursing in public. hmmm...
ah well, i hope you're all well!

Hi there!
I'm Canadian and my DH is Irish, from Howth. We are moving back there in June, Canada isn't really working out for us...
I'm really happy about it!
I plan on becoming a Certified LC before we go there and hope to be able to work with the women in our community and offer BF support.
I have a 15 mos old DD.

and i'm also wondering about nursing in public. hmmm...
Hi Leanbh!
When we were ther my DD was 6-8 months old. I found that alot of people thought it was strange that I was still breastfeeding and seemed to think that either I was a)crazy or b) some type of saint to continue for so long b/c its "hard".
I also found there is alot of misinformation out there and only 3% of Irish women continue to breastfeed beyond the first 6 months. I dont know if that is true but i foudn that in my research online...
My IL's also thought I was depriving DD of food b/c we EBFd for about 8-9months. I was constantly told about "So&so's" 6 month old who was eating EVERYTHING.
All that being said, I did meet 2 women who were extended bf'ers...one for 3.5yrs and the other was still nbursing her 14month old, which is a big deal there.
This is why I would love to offer suppourt when I move there and become a CLC before I go.
PS - i've just re read my post and it all sounds very negative. I hope that my experience is isolated and if anyone can add to this with their positive experiences I would love to hear it!
OH and to answer the post- I did BF in public and no one said anything to me at all. There was an abundance of nursing rooms in public places, which is cool, but I personally dont use them.

hooseanna, have you been to the Homebirth Association of Ireland (http://www.homebirth.ie/homebirthassociationofireland.htm) yet? Lots of great information, and you might just find others in your area who are homebirthers, too.
Good luck! :shy

Thats the site i first used to find out about homebirth in Ireland. Great info. And so far (27 weeks gone) is really doable, just as easy as my homebirth in the UK As for breastfeeding, never had a problem here in Ireland. No more than in the UK.
As for vaccinations my kids had the first bunch 2/3and 4 months in the UK (it was the 5in1 jab). Did not do the MMR but got them separately in the UK for both kids and when the time came for boosters for school i had to sign a for to withold consent. There were no lectures or anything. hope that helps. Jo

Just popping into this thread to say hi. I'm over in Galway and have a 15 month old DD. We've never had any problems breastfeeding in public, I've found a lot of older women here love to see you "feeding the baby yourself".
If anyone is interested, there's a pdf here (http://www.healthinfo.ie/fs/doc/hpu_publications/Out_and_about.pdf) from the health services which lists the relevant laws you are protected under. A handy thing to read. Basically you can NIP anywhere, and it is the duty of the cafe manager etc. to stop someone harrassing you if such a thing happened. But really most people here would be too embarrassed to complain even if they wanted to!
bf rates are shockingly low here!
We've decided to vax DD, our GP is happy to take it slowish, but I don't know anything about going the non-vax route here.
JennyT, I think we've met elsewhere :)

Hi. An ex-Dublin Sligo Mammy here.
It's not the most active thread this - pity!
I've one son - about to turn one on Friday - hooray. Born in our mobile home last year with fabulous independent midwife (living on site while we're building our house - talk about doing it all at once!!!). We co-sleep, still breastfeed, haven't vaccinated. Have one friend in Dublin raising her kids the same. Other friends raise an eyebrow or two, but don't say too much.
Kate - I've bought slings off you. Meant to review them too - and what do you know - never got around to it.
Well, just thought I'd say hi - and keep the irish connection alive.....
