View Full Version : Any Chicagoland or Ex-Chicagoland Mamas missing Marshall Field's this Christmas?

It's the holiday season, and this year, like every year for the past 10 years that I've lived in California, I'm missing the Chicago holiday traditions. A huge one in my family was Field's--taking the train into the city, seeing the window displays, lunch at the Walnut Room, a big box of Frangos... This is the first year without Field's and I'm wondering if anyone else is feeling nostalgic. I was back home in August and was lucky enough to be able to take DS before Macy's moved in. We have a photo of DH holding DS in the sling under the green clock on the corner of State and Washington, but I wish we could have taken him for his first Christmas. Happy Holidays, nonetheless! :wink

what you will really be sad about is when you actually get to go and visit the store (as MACY'S). it has quickly been transformed into a trashy, over packed, yuck of a store. :(.

that is what i am sad about.

:yeah: I haven't been back to Chicago since August, but I've lived with (and avoided) Macy's here in CA for over 10 years and I just knew it wouldn't take them long to schlock up State Street! :hopmad I never go into Macy's here--it's like a more expensive Wal-Mart. Nordstrom is the only option here, and their prices are the same as Field's so that may be an option for you. It's not the same, I know, but the live piano music and non-fluorescent lighting may be a soothing balm for the grief of losing MF's. :)

I also cross-listed this post in the Illinois tribal area, if you'd like to see the rest of the replies...

Well, I hear MAcy's isn't doing too great here, and it serves them right. They (at first) promised to keep the Fields name! Then no, sorry, you'll learn to like it, they said. Like Heck we will. Fields was struggling, but it was OURS. I used to go there with my Gma and eat at Heaven on Seven. Boohoo

mmm...frangos! what i really miss is lou malnati's pizza. but since i live in Phoenix, I think that my little man would freeze his tushie off :cold: if we took him at this time of year. although i do miss going to sauganash and looking at the lights. i've been in phoenix 5 years and still can't get used to warm weather and christmas lights.
