So, the day after I found out I was pregnant, I found out I had chicken pox. I've talked to my midwife about it (she didn't want me coming in, though. Huh, fancy that?) She's not concerned, but I'm flipping out a bit. I guess I'm kinda high-strung.
I found a study published in Lancet in June 94 that indicated that the probable risk of congenital varicella syndrome for cases where the disease was contracted before 13 weeks was pretty low, 2 cases out of 472 in the study. Does anyone know of more recent, or larger, studies?
Or have any words of comfort/wisdom?

Hi, I'm sorry you are going through this, I would be freaking out too. I am a scientist and had a quick look through the literature - a good resource I found was

It looks like the chances of problems are around 1-2% if you are in the first trimester of pregnancy, but most babies were fine (which is good news!). I would recommend you have the midwife or OB do an U/S later in the pregnancy to see if they can put you at piece of mind.
Hope you are feeling better soon!

Think of it this way, according to that study your baby has a 98%-99% chance of being unaffected. Those are pretty good odds.

You should PM Momtezuma Tautara. You can find her in the vaccination forum. She knows a lot about viral diseases and nutrition. She cured herself of hepatitis C with selenium and vitamin C.

Have you been able to get in touch with Momtezuma Tautara? How are you feeling?

Thanks for the gentle reminder :o
I just sent her a PM. We'll see what she has to say.
It's amazing how different my mindset is now that I'm feeling better. All scabbed over, I'm a lot less stressed. No way to change things (not that there ever was), so I might as well relax and assume the best.
And I'm starting to feel pregnancy symptoms, which makes me feel more connected to the new life inside me.
