i just found out im pregnant last night and i figure im probably 2 months along. im really scared though cause i had GD in my last pregnancy and i remember reading that GD can cause birth defects in early pregnancy if not controlled... however im also pretty sure that GD is rare in the first trimester. my concern is that i already have had GD the whole time and im a total carb lover, so it would be WAY out of control. before i found out i was pregnant i was drinking soda after soda, eating pasta constantly, etc. i was also severely and constantly thirsty, which is a symtom of diabetes. now that i know im pregnant i have cut the sugar and carbs way back, but im so scared that i have already done major damage. does anyone know anything about diabetes in the first trimester and how often it really causes birth defects when left unchecked? or anything helpful?

My best suggestion is listen to your doctor and do what they tell you to.

I am sure some members that have experienced this will comment back to you soon. It'll help hearing from someone that has been through it. I wish I could be a little more help but I have never experienced this.

I wish you nothing but the best! I hope you keep us posted.

Have you considered buying a blood glucose meter and checking your numbers to see if you have GD? You probably can get one free from a meter company like Abbott. They make their money on the test strips so they are happy to give away the meters for free.

Alternately, you could buy ketodiastix which check your urine for ketones and sugar which could clue you in about having GD - and they are much cheaper than purchasing a meter from a pharmacy. Good luck to you - I hope everything turns out great!

It sounds like you may have valid concerns about some level of insulin resistance or possibly even Type II diabetes before this pregnancy... which yes, would be a concern, and you should address. Since you had GD last pregnancy, you probably have a glucose monitor, correct? You can start checking your sugars and following the dietary recommendations that you used last time if they seem high.
