I gave my last midwives a simple candle. This time, I am thinking of homemade soap in a nice gift basket or a lovely art print. What have you given in the past?

I'm honestly not sure yet... I hope to learn more about her as she is learning about me through this pregnancy... it will most likely be a handmade gift whatever it turns out to be, but custom made to suit the midwife.

I think homemade soap sounds like a great idea (and if you're up for trading some homemade soaps, please let me know :wink )
My midwife commented that she really liked the CD I was listening to so I bought a copy for her and when I saw her at my 2 week post partum visit she said the LOVED it and had played it at 2 other births already! :)

We never made it to the birth last time (m/c at 10 wks) but gave our midwife a puppy from the litter our dogs produced. She loved our dogs and was interested in a pup so we didn't charge. We're working with the same midwife this time around (at 15 wks with #1!!!!!) and probably will give her something homemade--a small work of art perhaps.

When my daughter was born, I made a mini scrapbook for my midwives to put photos of all of the babies they've delivered in. I included a special poem I found on the first page, the next page had pics from Ellie's birth and a cute pic of her. I decorated all the other pages in the album so all they had to do was glue in their own photos.

LOL! I read the topic and thought, "I gave her $3000." :lol :lol :duck:
Seriously, something home made is a great idea. It is from the heart.

Is there anything you could give her that she could use in her practice later? If she does a lot of homebirths with other children around, maybe she could use one of those anatomically-correct pregnant dolls as a teaching tool for children. I don't know, I'm thinking...:lol

I made my midwives all a really nice scarf (2 and 1 apprentice that attended).

I didn't even know people gave gifts to midwives until recently. Now I feel like a jerk for not gifting. My husband makes wine, we will probably give her a bottle.

I was killing time, waiting to go into labor for days and was playing "Murphy's Law" with my baked goods and/or gourmet meals (like, making bread dough or a complicated dish that required I not rush off to go have a baby...it finally worked after several days:lol )
So the day I went into labor I'd made whole wheat cinnamon rolls, which we took with us, and I left them there for my midwife and the attending nurse and the staff, if they made it until Monday (birth center birth).
This time, probably food again. I'd thought about bringing wine, but so many older women (menopausal or older) I know don't tolerate alcohol well, and it really helps to know what a person likes before you spend money on something like that.
Maybe a jar of local honey if I happen to go sometime soon before I give birth and have extra money that day.

Last time I gave Lush soaps and a copy of the book we got dd's name from. This time I'm thinking I might make some batik clothing or a bag or something, since I'm getting into doing that. Hopefully it won't suck. Oh, and maybe, once again, a copy of the book we're getting ds's name from. :)
