I have a question. I got my nose pierced about a year ago, and after about a month a lump formed under it. It looked gross so i took it out and let it grow shut.
So this year, i was missing it and decided to get it back in. The piercer said that those lumps are called keloids? ketoids?
So, it's been a month and now this lump if reforming. What can i do about it?

I am not a peircer, but someone who has had this happen in the past with my ear piercings up on the cartilage. Did the piercer use a hollow needle or a solid?
Chances are good if it was a solid (YUCK, dont go back to him or her) that is what caused the lump. If its a keloid, there isnt really much you can do but take the piercing out, honestly. They happen in some people on tattoos, too. Its just a bodily reflex.

i was wondering if any of you are tattoo artists or have friends who are? i'd really like to try tattooing but don't know where to start. i know you need an apprenticeship if you really want to be a tattoo artist but i'm not even to that point yet. i was looking to get a simple setup but found i don't know enough to do that. i need to know what the different machines and needles are for, which inks are good, etc. then i need some info on the technique, like how deep to go with the needle and such. does anyone have any leads?
thanks!

the best way to start is to get tattooed and get to know people in the tattoo industry. don't just start tattooing. usually you get tattooed, then work counter for a couple of years, then start apprenticing. it is a long process if you do it the right way.

i know that that's "the right way" and, in browsing the internet for info, i've learned that that's all anyone is willing to say. but i'm just not willing to devote so much time and energy to pursuing something i have no idea if i'll be any good at or even like. and i don't think that most of the tattoo artists working today did it that way without ever touching a machine, yk? i'm not looking to start hacking people up, pretending to be a pro. i just wanna get a machine in my hand and try it out on an orange or something. if i love it, i'll go that long process, if i don't or can't manage a straight line, i can forget about it. but at the moment i don't know anything and no one's willing to tell :(

Sounds like a sunburn to me. I would keep it moist with a good moisturizing lotion and hope it doesn't peel too much.

why should they give you something (information) for free? really, start getting tattooed and talking to your artists. like any career you have to invest time and money to get it.

I have been meaning to share this remedy I found for hypertrophic scarring that has worked like a charm for my nostril piercing. About 1 1/2 months into my heaing I started to develop and small bump on the edge of the site that grew some in size but stayed within the regions of the original piercing. I was initially afraid it was a keloid, but upon further research found that it was hypertrophc scarring. I read on another forum that a guy had kind of lucked onto a treatment, which I tried myself and it works!
I threw 1 chamomile tea bag into a coffee mug about half full of water and microwaved it for about 45 secs. til pretty good and hot. The I added in about 1/2 tsp. non-iodized sea salt and stirred it all up and let the tea bag steep for just a bit so the liquid was still fairly toasty. Then I took the tea bag and applied it like a compress to my piercing. I did this for about 10-15 mins. 2x a day for 2-3 days. Redipping the tea bag each time it got cool or dried out. Each day the lump got smaller and by around the third day it was completely dried up and I peeled it away with clean tweezers. When I changed jewelry for the first time I got a lump again, and did the same treatment with the same miraculous results. And now have no problem with the site.
I wanted to share cause it seems so many of us have these lumps that very well are not keloids, but temporary scarring. And I wanted to share in hopes that it will heal others too. Heck who knows maybe it would help keloids too? :wink Good luck all!

As to the person who said, "Why would they give that infor for free"? I can tell you why. When people like Kat Von D. get famous and start telling people they are 'self taught' that makes others think they can just grab a kit off of ebay and start going to town. That's unrealistic and generally not very safe. I would MUCH rather tell someone the RIGHT way, than be an elitist jerk and go with the "Figure it out yourself" method. Not all artists agree with me, though.
Lilike, your BEST bet is to STOP looking at machines, right now.
Start looking at sketchpads and pencils. To improve your chances of snaring an apprenticeship, you need a couple of things- a solid on paper art portfolio, a willingness to learn, and a really, really thick skin.
I can tell you, getting yourself educated on blood borne pathogens is good, too- the Red Cross has a great course, or you can order one from OSHA.
You need to be VERY careful about who you apprentice under. If the artist claims you're going to be working in less than a year- RUN. I realize some people may pick it up fast, but honestly, I think there is so much to learn and really have under your belt before you pick up that first machine, that a year is a pretty good goal to set for yourself.
Also, if you don't know how to scrub out a toilet, mop a floor, take out trash, now would be a good time to learn because chances are good that's what you'll be doing to "pay" for the apprenticeship.
Also keep in mind, many artists still believe in the old way of ball busting the apprentice- which, to me, to a point, is good. It keeps you from developing a really cocky attitude and getting ahead of yourself until you deserve to.
You'll have to visit many, many shops, might start and stop apprenticeships, but in the long run, its really worth it. The apprenticeship is what teaches you to manage the straight line and helps not only you, but the artist you work with to decide if you wanna tattoo in the long run. Think of it like an internship- I know very few lawyers who started out in small claims court just to "see if they'd like it".
Hope this helps!

Oh, and by the way- "practicing on an orange" or practice skin is good- but if you get a "kit", nine times out of ten the places that don't require a license to buy them? Bad news. Secondly, if you don't know how to tune and put together the machine, you're at a loss. Thirdly *sigh* my arms. My thighs. Let me show you them.
You NEVER keep it to the practice skins. I know waaaay back I started with the skins, oranges, honeydo melons and started looking at my leg going, "Now, wait, I could.."
And next thing you know, TONS of apprentice tattoos I have to get covered. ;)
To say nothing of when you are broke and people are going, "HEY, you do tatts!" (But technically you don't yet) and the temptation to work on people is very strong.
Save yourself the trouble, go out and get the apprenticeship- hold off on the machine until you can get a good one. Its well worth it.

Hey all!
I'm new. I used to have a tatoo, but had to have it removed because it was done very poorly.
I got my nose pierced by someone about 3 weeks ago, even by a very experienced piercer, but she pierced it at the wrong angle and put a screw in it. When it started healing it healed over the bump of the turn of the jewlry, making the piercing not straight, so I had to take it out (besides it was at the wrong angle and wouldn't lay flush with my nose).
I'm not looking forward to getting it repierced, because it hurt like hell, but I'm going to do it, because I loved it.
So my questions for all of you with experience are:
1. Is it suppose to hurt *that* bad? She did mine really high and angled the piercing up instead of down, so I'm wondering if that was part of the intense pain (bing so high).
2. I orignally pierced in on the left side, but it's too high, so I don't think I want to use the same "hole". There is still a "dent" where the piercing was, so I'm concerned to pierce right below it, should I pierce the right side instead?
3. Is there any way to get rid of the dent form the old piercing?
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
Thanks!

I've never been able to get rid of a scar form previous piercings (the dent) but someone else may have. As far as where to pierce your nose I would suggest somewhere along the natural "line" of your nostril. I generally shoot right for the middle of that line. Easy way to figure it out is get a fine tip sharpie and make some dots, find one you like and ask for it there. Can't say much about the angle without haivng seen it. Never had my nostril pierced personally but pierced lots of 'em and every one probably said it hurt. Whether yours hurt more than it should have really depends on the piercer and how efficient she/he is. Hard to find a piercer that had more than a two week apprenticeship these days, ask around your area for someone that's really good and ask for a portfolio.

Not a mama yet, but pierced and tattooed!
Ink:
--A comma inside my right hip bone
--a thick circle outline on the inside of my left wrist (which may turn into a full sleeve, eventually.)
--a key in the center of my sternum (which I'm very, very tempted to turn into a chest piece)
--I'm about to start on a back piece of a tree
Piercings:
--6 gauge (and growing) ear lobes
--nose stud
--nape
And I have a question--I'm considering getting one or both nipples pierced. Here's my question--for mamas who had nipple piercings and then went on to breastfeed, how did that work out for you? Any regrets or problems? I don't want to get this piercing now and regret it later. (Feel free to PM me if you don't want to share details with the world)

I had my nipples pierced before breastfeeding and I haven't had any problems. I was a piercer for several years and I learned during my apprenticeship that nipple piercings only sever a few milk ducts but not enough to keep the milk from coming down.
I will say that it takes a while for them to heal and if you are TTC I wouldn't even bother, it'll be painful when your boobs get sore and then you'll have a baby and either have to remove the jewelry every time you nurse, which will be constantly with a newborn, or just leave it out. Wouldn't be worth the pain and time you'd have to put into taking care of them IMO.

I used to have my navel pierced but took it out during my 3rd pregnancy since my belly button had become more of an outie than an innie and it just didn't sit right anymore. Other than that i just have 7 holes in my ears.
I have quite a few tattoos. I don't know how to count them anymore since some have joined together to be one and such.
My upper back/shoulder blades has my girls initials T, E, M. They were done seperately after each kid, then we just kind of joined them when i got Emma's done. The symbol in the middle was there first...it's the chinese symbol for loyalty. Me and my roommate/best friend got matching tattoos. We had a falling out a few months later after i became pg. Before we got a chance to officially make up, she was murdered in her home during a robbery. She was only 23. So that one means alot to me.
back (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v193/lastaats/backpiece.jpg) lower back (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v193/lastaats/tat2.jpg)
I also have my husband's name "Ben" on my ring finger as our wedding band (he has mine on his), 3 red and blue stars on the side of both my wrists, and a tribal around my belly button...but after 3 kids it's not as cute as it once was!

I had a ton of problems BFing and to celebrate the fact that I have been Exclusively Pumping for 17mths now I want a tattoo on my breast. Also I thought my next babe could enjoy the pattern/colors while nursing.:wink I am currently trying to conceive our next child and I would not want to get tattooed while pregnant so if I am going to get this tattoo and have it for my next babe I need to do it now. Soooo my question to all you tattooed mamas.....
Is this (,Tattoo ON breast while BFing) a huge No No? The info I can find on Kellymom.com just regarding Tattoo in general seems like it would be "ok". But I wanted to run it by other BFing moms.
What is your opinion? Does it matter if it is on your Breast or would the same argument be used for/against tattoos while BFing no matter where the tattoo was located? :bfs:bfs
Also what do you think about how it will look in the long run due to all the stretching going on while BFing? My Breasts are small, probably less than an A before getting preggers and sometimes a very small C if I am REALLY FULL, like 12hrs full!
Thanks!!

Pierced and Tatt'd mama here... with a piercing/breastfeeding question...
I've been pregnant several times with my nipple piercings, however, I have miscarried every single time...
I have found that in the breast changes, I get a lot more "crunchies" while pg. and my nips are def. more sore and tender, I've even had to get wider bars or rings to accomodate nipple width, but I haven't gotten as far as nursing with my piercings... I got them done right after weaning dd#2.
Even after this many years (8) it doesn't seem that nipples ever REALLY heal fully... so I want some REAL LIFE pierced bfing mamas to speak out!
My PLAN is to wear my rings, with the captive bead OUT, for ease of removal/insertion before and after bfing in hopes that they will not close up.
AND another q: not that it matters, since the baby takes the whole thing in, but since the holes don't seem to ever heal, does milk leak out the piercings or does it slow/reduce flow? Will there be mastitis probs?
Forgive my ignorance on peircings and bfing, I got Bfing down, but this one will be a new one.
any advice or personal experience with peirced nipples and bfing is greatly appreaciated!!!

milk leaks out of the piercing holes for most women while you're nursing.
i think it would really be a PITA to nurse a baby while taking your jewelry in and out. you'd be better off just getting them repierced when you're done. i couldn't even keep jewelry in for my last pregnancy, it was just too uncomfortable.

Hey everyone. Just popping in here with a random question, hope you don't mind! It's possible I may have tried to ask this in one of these tattoo/piercing threads before, but I can't quite remember.
Anyway, I got a big ol' keloid scar behind my ear. At least I think it's a keloid scar. And I think it happened when I was pregnant, but I can't remember for sure. I had to take the 2nd piercings out of my ears because of it. I'd love to get more piercings and some tattoos, but I'm TERRIFIED of getting more keloid scars. I think once you get one, your chances of getting another are much higher than the normal person. It's taken me this long to get used to the one I have, and to get over embarrassment of it being seen if I wear my hair in a ponytail or something. I do feel better about that now. But if I got one on my face? or somewhere more visible? Gah. There's no guarantee that those things can even be removed (and stay gone), so it'd be stuck there for life, most likely. Has anybody had any experience with this? I'm not even sure what my specific question is, but for now... I won't do anything more to my skin because I'm afraid. Any insight would be great.
I also wonder if it's because of pregnancy hormones that it happened in the first place, if I'm right in my memory about it happening when I was pregnant. I don't plan on having any more kids (though who knows, I guess), but if that's the case, then maybe I'll be alright? Help! :gloomy:

Ok, I don't mean tattoos ON your kids but what (if anything) do the mommas here have as tattoos to represent motherhood, their children, breastfeeding...etc?
I looked back a few months in the posts and saw the awesome breastfeeding pinup tattoo.
I would like to get my 2nd tattoo sometime and am looking for inspiration!
Thanks =)

Hello all!
1 tattoo, was on my pelvis, now is sad and stetched out, hanging loose skin. :-( 6 piercings, although 2 closed. I have been having a hard time with my belly button ring since dd was 5-6 months old (now 21 months) b/c she LOVES, actually, it seems like a compulsion or somthing, to twiddle it while nursing. It started to get red and sore a while ago and now I try to keep it covered as much as possible with clothing, etc, but she is DETERMINED! Anyway. I have always wanted a nose and eyebrow peircing, although I think eybrow would suit me much better, and I feel like "why not?" since I am home with babies and can dress and look as I please, but I have been nursing/pregnant for like 3 years now, and I don't see an end in sight! I am not really concerned about infection, etc, with the peircing, but I know it isn't a great idea and I don't know where I would go. (I used to be a hip village chick in NY and got everything done down by st. marks, except my tat which was in alphabet city.)

hello -
am looking at getting my third tat sometime soon and have it narrowed down between my inner wrist or on top of my foot. here are my questions:
pain - which is worse?
my inner wrist veins, while not bulging, sometimes are a little raised - will this be a problem while getting tattooed? will it affect how the tattoo will look when done?
any reply will be helpful!! thanks.

Hi there. I don't have a tattoo on either place but I did hang out at the tattoo shop a lot in the last 6 months (over 40 hours worth of work on my back, lol) and I listened a lot to the artists chat.
It seems like the foot has a hard time accepting ink. Even if it does look good right after it is done there is a high chance that in a very short while it will look old. The skin on the foot is just quite a bit different.
The artist that did my back said that he hated foot tattoos so much because people would come back in and complain about it. Some wanted to blame him for the old look of the tattoo when it wasn't him, it was because it was on the foot.

the guy that tatīs me told me that sunscreen on hand tats is extremely important...but i would say hands nor feet differ from any other place on your bady, right? it might hurt more, but if you take care of it, nothing to worry about.
iīm editing just to say that i put total sunscreen on my tats every single day in summer...i have 2 small ones and the not-finished-yet one starts on my shoulder and ends on my tummy...sunscreen all over the top part. does anyone else wear sunscreen everyday?

I put an SPF45 sunblock on all my tattoos year round.
I've really had the itch lately to get something new. Though since I'm still breastfeeding I'll be waiting awhile. While I'm on maternity leave from my cooperate job, I've taken a part time job at a tattoo shop as a receptionist(just to keep me busy) and it makes me want a new one even more.

the guy that tatīs me told me that sunscreen on hand tats is extremely important...
I don't usually put sunscreen on the tats on my back or ankle unless I am in the pool. I do have a ankle to knee calf piece that I put sunscreen on daily for the first 8 or 9 years, and it has not faded or bled at all and it is so vibrant after 13 years now. I don't put sunscreen on that too often either, though, nowadays (have sensitivities and allergies to most sunscreens). I think care is some of it, and the individuals skin type, and the artist too.
I will be hitting the big 4-0 (gasp) in a few weeks, and have been mulling over getting a tattoo on my left leg (same spot as on right leg, outer ankle to knee) and want something that marks my journey - as a mom, artist, turning 40...landmark year, I think. Hmmmm.

You run a small risk of infection when you get tattooed. Not good to have while NFing. I have had a couple tattoos done while I was still BFing. Just make sure you have your tattoo done by a clean/sterile artist. Take very good care of your tattoo afterward....it's fine.

I'm new here! Well, to this thread. :lol
I have 3 piercings in my left ear and 4 in my right, a navel piercing and 3 tattoos.
I am dying to get some more ink and also to get my nose pierced. My dh isn't supportive of my desires. :lol In the past he has said that he thinks it's a bad example for our kids to see me pierced up and stuff, and then he has also said it's a waste of money.
I am about to earn some money that we both have agreed is mine alone to spend however I want. Well, I want to get my nose pierced! I know he's going to be upset whether I tell him before I do it or not, so I guess I would just like some insight or BTDT tales, if any of you have them. :) I just think it's stupid to not do something for myself because he thinks it's a bad example or whatnot. Our kids are going to encounter all sorts of people who look, speak, act, and think differently than we do and I doubt that a teeny tiny nose stud will send them into a tailspin of self destruction. :wink

Or just plain freakin' wierd....LOL, ;-)
This group is for you. We will be meeting for the first time officially on 8/18/07 in Congress Park from 9am to 11am. So bring your munchkin, as there is a playground, some water, a snack maybe, and most importantly, and OPEN MIND.
We will meet once a month with kiddos, and one "Ditch Your Kids," night every month also, that will NOT be kid friendly. You will need a baby sitter. As we will be out on the town. Our first official Ditch your kids event will be 9/08/07. If you would like to attend this one, I will need to recieve an email from you at CherryBombMoms@bluebottle.com prior to 08/25/07.

i canīt find it now but someone wrote that her partner thinks being tattoed is a bad example for the kids...i think alot of our families might feel the same. not my partner for he is tattoed also, but my mother for example, freaks out each time cuz my boy is "going to grow up thinking this is something good and normal"...wow!!!!!!! thatīs actually a wonderful thing! that he see that thereīs a rainbow of possibilities out there and itīs not good or bad to be tattoed or have pink hair or be "heavy" or "hippy" or anything...right?
bad example? give respect to your children and those around you and that is all the example they need! but yeah i understand you...

I ordered a bunch of jewlery that showed up today, including several saddle plugs. My left ear is currently at a 4g. I tried to put in the saddle plug and there was NO WAY it was going in. So I put in my 2g taper and I can get that all the way through no problem. Is there a trick to putting in saddle plugs? Yeah, my dh said the same thing about me getting my nose pierced. That it would set a bad example for our kids and that they would be wanting piercings too. SO? He went so far as to say he would pull it out with pliers if I got my nose pierced. The totally weird thing? He's completely fine with me getting my tattoo...... I'm thinking about getting it done anyway and just give him time to adjust. He had a bad reaction to me stopping shaving, but now he loves it. We'll see!

Hi mamas, I'm Nina, a tattooed and pierced mama! I am working on a back piece right now, we did the outline last week and I am going for color this week. Its a goddess mandala with my dds name on the side-on my upper left shoulder. I'll post a pic when its finished. I am hoping to have a full back piece by this time next year. I want to do the Japanese wave starting at my lower back and coming up my right shoulder- so the mandala will look like a moon. I also have some tats on my abdomen and ankle. Nose ring, ears etc...
My dp is completely tattooed. Arm sleve, half sleve on other arm, full back, legs, chest....just everywhere :lol

Thoes were done at Four Star by a women name Crow.
pittnurse08, I had a vertical hood piercing (took it out looooong story, even longer story about how I got it) it didnt hurt much getting it done the healing wasnt great for me, going to the bathroom for the first couple days was kinda painful. But healed up great and I loved the look. I didnt get as much of the "sensation" as ive heard other women get. 7 weeks is def plenty of time to heal :)

I had an inner labia piercing, and that healed pretty quickly. I was a little too nervous to let someone get close to the real goodies, iykwim. I went to a really reputable place. It was a male that did the piercing, and he was very professional about it. They said that it takes about a month for everything to heal. I think it was faster than that, but everyone is different.
Sounds like a nice surprise!

hmm that sounds like it shouldent be a problem, my ears are at 1 and 1/2 inches so its been a while since I was at anything under 0g. But ive often bought jewlery that are suppose to both be the same size but I could only get one pair in and couldent get the other one in. The lip on saddle plugs can sometimes be a little tricky and can take some work to get in. My dp has had a few troubles getting some of his in. You can always take them to a good piercer and see if they can help you get them in :)

thanks for the advice, pinksprklybarefoot and RileysmamaNM! on wednesday, i went to the piercing studio where i had my navel done 5 years ago and talked to some of the piercers about getting a vertical hood. they totally put me at ease and i decided to go for it right then before i could chicken out. it wasn't bad at all and i LOVE how it looks. the worst part is that i'm not telling anyone irl until after the wedding, because i don't want anyone to leak the secret! i just have a few more questions about jewelry. i got pierced with a 14 gauge curved barbell, but i've heard that the heavier gauges are usually more comfortable. i'm guessing that moving up to a 12 gauge after it's healed wouldn't be too difficult due to the nature of the tissue, but has anyone had experience with this? do you think a straight barbell would also work in a piercing like this or should i stick with the curved ones? lastly, is internal threading a must even after it's healed? i'm just full of questions, aren't i? :lol thanks in advance!

Congrats on the new piercings! Glad it went good!
I had a 12g internal thread curved barbell for my hood piercings. Going up a size is easy doesnt hurt at all in my opinion and internal thread jewlery is the only stuff I buy for my piercings its just better anytime I have external I have problems with the balls falling out and its usually cheaper quality jewlery.
I wish I had the money for a new tattoo right now its been a few months and im itching but its dp turn :p .

woo-hoo! good for you. you should always stick to internally threaded, as earlier poster mentioned, the quality is much higher (which is required in order to drill out the threads internally) and externally threaded jewelry is likely a mish-mash of metals that i would never put near my coochie or in any other hole:o :p i wear a j-post in mine so that the gem i wear in it faces out--very pretty!

okay, so I don't actually have any piercings or tats.... I used to have my nose pierced, but took it out. I have been so very much wanting it back again- went to get it done, picked out the pretty little diamond, filled out the paperwork, was all ready.... then the lady tells me that I can't get a piercing while I'm nursing- that the trauma of a piercing could actually cause my milk to dry up....
So, I left feeling super bummed- I really want that pretty little sparkle again :-) but I'm not willing to sacrifice my little guys mama-milk for it...
So what I am wanting to know from y'all is this: have you heard of this? Is this something I should be concerned about? Is this bogus? That was a few months ago now, and I won't be finished nursing anytime soon. Should I just put it on the back-burner for a few more years?
Thanks for your input!

So what I am wanting to know from y'all is this: have you heard of this? Is this something I should be concerned about? Is this bogus? That was a few months ago now, and I won't be finished nursing anytime soon. Should I just put it on the back-burner for a few more years?
Thanks for your input!
This sounds totally bogus to me. I am still nursing my almost 22-month old and am planning to get my nose pierced in a couple of weeks. IMO, it's no different than having your ears pierced or for heaven's sake, accidentally slicing your finger open while chopping up veggies for supper! Trauma causing milk to dry up? I don't think so.
You go on, mama! Get that sparkle! Then come back and tell about it because I need to know how it feels. :D
Now, if I'm misinformed I hope that someone will correct me. I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction...

i honestly think there is no trauma in getting a percing. there is more trauma in a hurricane, and i doubt a motherīs milk dried up under those circumstances.
iīve been getting my tat for a few months now (8hours done), and itīs hurt veeeeery bad and my milk hasnīt dried up!

I have 3 ear piercings and my naval but lately I have been really wanting a tatoo! I want to go down to Cali and have Kat Von D do my son's protrait on my lower back. I will probably wait till I have all my babes though so I can get all their portraits done at once. I then want head to Miami and have Chris Garver do a cherry tree starting with the roots all through my babes' pictures, up the right side of my back and onto one shoulder in a water color style (no outline, only color). We shall see if DH will let me! I have a while though before I have all my baby makin' done! If only I lived near awesome artists and there was something to get now! Drat!

okay, so I don't actually have any piercings or tats....

I have my tongue pierced as well as a Monroe. I have 4 tatts... a ladybug on my ankle which I had done with a friend of mine (we got identical tatts, the first for both of us), a shamrock which I got because the woman I was dating is Irish, a really cool colorful design and a good friend designed for me (she went with me and had her 1st tat done the same day), and recently I got dd's handprint on my left shoulder (above my heart). I am getting Zander's footprint on the top of my foot on my 40th birthday next month. I LOVE getting tattoed and if I did not have to work for a living, I would be covered!

Got my nose pierced today for my 22nd birthday! I can't get over how expensive piercings are here. I paid $25 last year for my lip in Ohio and just paid $66 for my nose here. Yikes. But I like it. It's cute. It didn't hurt at all, either.

Hey everyone,
I have been wanting a navel piercing for years. I have mixed feelings because I know they are so common now, but I take a while to do these things. (I wanted my tattoo for over 20 years before I finally took the plunge.)
I keep waiting for the right circumstances. Couldn't do it while swimming every day. Then got pregnant. Too heavy. Whatever.
Now I'm nursing an 11 month old, and really wanting to get it done for my birthday as a treat to myself, new beginning, etc. But I'm worried about all the time she spends on my lap, fidgeting, pulling up and down, etc. Would I be letting myself in for a world of hurt and bad healing? I just can't see how I could keep her away from the sensitive area.
Thoughts would be most welcome. I know they take a while to heal and I'm committed to taking care of it, but when they give you the instructions, I don't think they are thinking of squirmy almost-toddlers and pretty much nonstop comfort nursing on your lap!

whittaker--I think if you get pierced with a curved barbell rather than a captive bead ring, you shouldn't have much trouble at all. I had my navel pierced when I turned 18 and it was done with a CBR, but it was easy for me to be careful with it. I took it out when I was pg both times and recently put in a rather short curved barbell. My daughter is 21 months and doesn't even notice it during nursing!
I hope you get it done. You will really love it. And I'm like you, waiting so long to do things. I am just now thinking about and designing my future lower back tattoo. I've wanted one since my freshman year in college---almost 10 years ago! :lol

Update---I spoke with my dh the other day about piercing my nose. I said, "I have to tell you something and you're not going to like it.". I think he was expecting me to tell him that I wrecked my van or something. :lol I said, "I am going to get my nose pierced soon." and he was just like, "Really? You're really going to do it? When?" and I said, "Soon!". Then he teased me for a minute with some funny remarks that would be a UA violation here. :wink
But that was IT!! No big fallout, no WWIII, no "What kind of an example are you setting for our kids?", no nothing. It was great! Now I can go in a couple of weeks and enjoy the experience and celebrate my milestone. I was almost not looking forward to it because it would have been tainted with defensiveness and anger. But now, it will be so awesome and joyful. :love

For all you newbies that haven't seen my tat I thought I would post it again.
Here it is (http://www.PictureTrail.com/gid17658174&PATHID)
The flowers all represent a different person. Important ladies in my life. The person that they represent picked out the flower themselves. The top one, the orchid, is me :) The sunflower, the rosebud and the purple sage flowers are my daughters. The pansy, the daisy, the orange blossom and the lotus are my sisters. The bluebells are my sisters-in-law and the large rose is my mom. My mom doesn't like tats so she she didn't pick the rose. I picked it for her because it is her favorite flower. I have three sisters-in-law for the three bluebells but only one sister-in-law picked it. But the rest, even my 4 year old, picked their flowers.
It took 6 months which was 11 sittings which was over 40 hours. :D And I love it!! But my next tat will be two sittings at most!

An infection from a pierced navel wouldn't travel into your milk. Infections like that traveling into milk and hurting the baby is a very old myth that has since been disproven. It would be like weaning or suspending breastfeeding because you had an infected toe or mastitis.
I plan on getting my nose repeirced shortly after this baby is born. Sort of as a birthing present to myself :D

I guess it depends on your piercer. S/He may be up to date on this. My peircer has no problem poking holes in my lactating body :lol If not, you could bring them some info. I think the FDA has a little blurb in their breastfeeding release about infections and breastmilk. I'm sure the AAP does as well.

I am currently working on a new piece that is incorporating a cover up of two tattoos I got in college. They were supposed to match, but one was done really professionally at one time and the other was done really UNprofessionally about a year later. :irked
And candipooh--I never commented on your tattoo, but it's gorgeous! I love the sunflower especially. :love
hello! figured i'd give an official hello as i've been admiring all the tatts & piercings here. i currently have a few tatts & am dying to get my next few. my upper left arm has my oldest dd's name on it with a design around it that she drew & i am planning on getting dd2's footprints & name on the forearm of the same arm. long term goal of having a full sleeve of family memories on that side. i have my husbands name on the back of my neck with 3 12 leaf lotus flowers under it that takes up about half of my upper back all in black & gray. i also have a horrible moon & star tatt on my chest (another 16 year old mistake! :o ) that i am going to have covered by having sparrows on either side of my chest. used to have my septum, vertical hood, nipples, naval, lip, tongue pierced, but removed all those a few years ago. i would like to have my lobes stretched still however. look forward to chatting some more.

Here's the info from the website:
What is the APP POSITION ON Body Piercing During Nursing?
With the exception of a 3-month post-partum delay we do not find it contraindicated to receive piercings (with the obvious exception of the nipples) during nursing. The body is not under the same type of demands as during pregnancy.
Further, we suggest that a longer period be observed prior to nipple piercing. It is advisable and prudent to wait three months following the cessation of breast milk production before piercing of the nipples.
----
So now I'm wondering, does this just mean my piercer was very cautious and conservative, or does it mean he's behind the times in this area, and perhaps others?
I won't be getting another chance to go by there for weeks. I don't know if it's worth it trying to discuss. I mean, his waiver would mean I had to LIE about it ...
Ugh ...

I used to have a few of piercings: navel, tongue, back of neck, nose. I took them all out years ago because I just lost interest in them I suppose.
I got my first tattoo on my shoulder blade (which hurt like hell) 2 weeks ago. It's a butterfly that I designed and I love it (blue, purple, green, yellow colors). It has healed up nicely.
I guess my question is what have you all done with your tats to keep them in good shape so to say? I've just been putting lotion on it and washing it when I take my shower at this point. I plan to wear sunscreen when it is exposed. Anything else I should know about??
Thanks!

i have 4 tats and dream of many more when the money is right. i'm a little upset about the ones i have right now just because they really don't mean anything. i guess i can look at them and remember the place i was in, and who i was with, but with future tats, i want them to mean something. i've pierced myself multiple times, but never left them in very long, back then i just liked the pain. i was a cutter, and a recreational piercer:confused: . lots of things have changed in my life (i'm not numb anymore, so i don't cut or try to hurt myself) but i still love the look of a great tat and someday if i can talk my husband into it i'd love to get a couple of things pierced, but this time for the look. i love all who are unique,:flipped they are just so beautiful:loveeyes: . thats how God made us, and i think it sad to see people just going with the flow and not knowing there true self. you all rock!!:grouphug

When I went for my first post baby piercing I was all nervous for some reason. It was especially funny that I was nervous that it was going to hurt not only because I had given birth naturally but also because I was re-piercing my septum with a 12g when I first pierced it with a 8g and stretched to a 6g lol. I was more scarred of this little piercing then I had been with my branding or suspension :lol of course it didnt hurt.

I know someone here posted about having a hard time getting a pierced nose to heal, does anyone have any tips?
I got mine pierced on Saturday (it was pierced before on the other side, but I let it close for work) and it's really red and a little hard around the hole. I'm following the aftercare directions exactly - cleaning twice a day with the soap and three saline soaks. I know it hasn't been very long, but I don't remember any previous piercing being this red. Of course I also wasn't trying to keep a 19 month old away from it back then either. The last time I had a lot of crusties around the piercing, but I don't have any this time. I thought they were a sign of healing, so is this a good thing or a bad thing that they are missing?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!!

Nina---GORGEOUS!!!! That is so beautiful mama! :love
April---Hey! I just got mine done last Thursday and it's healing well with lots of crusties, like you said your first one had. My aftercare instructions were to leave it completely alone, no touching the jewellry, no washing it, no cotton swabs, etc. Wash hands with antibacterial soap before doing anything to it and I am supposed to do 2 sea salt soaks a day, 5-10 minutes each. 1 Cup of hot water with 1/4 tsp finely ground non-iodized sea salt dissolved in it. I use a shot glass. for the actual soak. :wink
Something my piercer said was to not swab at it with a Q-tip or cotton ball because the little cotton fibers an actually get into the piercing and cause it to get a bump and not heal properly. He said that if after the soak there are crusties that need to be removed the use the folded edge of a paper towel to gently get them out.
He also said not to use any soaps, makeup, neosporin, etc, on the piercing because all of that shite is too harsh for the newly forming skin cells.
I know alot of this is probably redundant to you, but I wanted to put down everything I know in case any of it can help. I hope you get to healing up fast!! :hug

Hi mamas! You were all the way on page 6!!
Quick question: I just got my first tattoo on Friday. The artist told me to use A&D ointment. I have Dr Bronner's and Sun Dog's Magic Organic Balm for Tattoos. I showed it to him and he said he'd never heard of it and didn't want me to use it because it's scented. However, the A&D is scented (smells like butt) and I don't like using petroleum.
Here's the ingredients: OG Jojoba oil, OG Beeswax, OG Avacodo oil, OG Hemp oil, OG Patchouli & Lime oils, Natural Tocopherols.
Do you think it's ok to use this instead of the A&D? I'll post pictures once it's healed. It's peeling right now. I love it though!
Thanks!

I didn't get a notice that there were new posts. :( My piercer said to clean the piercing once or twice a day with the soap they gave me on a q-tip and I totally have a bump around it, it's like a perfect little donut. Or it was before last night. DS must have been rolling around in his sleep and swiped his arm over my face. The jewelry must have snagged on his pj's and I woke up with great pain and the piercing bleeding. So now I guess I have two issues. Advice is welcome on either. Would stopping the soap and just soaking it be the answer?
I need to stop trying to get piercings and just stick to tattoos, they heal up just fine. :wink
Thanks!!!!

Thanks!
My tattoo artist said to use fragrance-free Lubriderm. I'm covered with tattoos and never had any issue!

looking for ideas...
i plan on getting my son's name on the inside of my wrist and then another tattoo for him below that. i'm looking for some inspiration for his name though. i don't want it to be just plain script. i'd like to use some color and maybe designs. any ideas or pictures would be greatly appreciated!

Yay! Another tribe for me!
I have had 9 piercings in all:
2 in each lobe, 2 in left cartilage, 1 left nostril, 1 in right eyebrow, and 1 in belly button (took that one out).
No tats here.
Oddly enough, my eyebrow piercing (the most recent) was less painful and quicker to heal than ANY of my previous piercings. Anyone else experience this? I think part of it has to do with the piercer being more knowledgeable, partly with my care of it, and partly perhaps because of the thick muscle there???

CFiddlinMama!
I recently decided to invest in Dr Bronner's/Sun Dog's for my latest tattoo care as well. I was wondering how it worked for you? I am on Day 3 of applying it so I was wondering if I should continue using it. There are absolutely ZERO reviews on the internet about this stuff. Is your tattoo healing properly with good color?
Thanks!

Yay! another awesome tribe :) I just recently got my 13th tattoo. My fiance & I got engagement tattoos. I also used to have almost 30 piercings but I took them out when I got pregnant. Just decided it was time to start anew. I miss them sometimes though. But I must say the 5 in my lip & my tounge ring caused a lot of damage to my gums so it's really best that I took them out:o

I didn't end up using the Dr Bronner's until it was almost healed. I switched to the Lubriderm. It did heal really nicely though. Now I use the Dr Bronners whenever it looks dry and I want to smell like patchouli. MMMMM :) I have to get someone to take a picture and then I'll post it.

Thanks! The guy who did it (Craig at Mother's in Erlanger and Covington KY) is AMAZING! He has such a light touch. The whole thing was amazing. The experience was great, a quiet clean shop, with morrocan music in the background :)
It still is getting color added to it. The hebrew is smaller than the opriginal so you can see the color it was, and you can see the original outside of the tat.
But his next free slot is FEBRUARY! I don't have an appt to finish it till then. WHich stinks but by then I'll have more money :lol

One of my fav subjects! :)
I have 3 tatoos, music notes on my right ankle, paw prints around my left ankle and a Brian Froud faery on my back.
I have 2 peircings currently (not counting my ears)., my nose and tongue. I used to have my nipple peirced but that one had to come out.
In the very near future I'm going to get my eyebrow peirced. I'm trying to decide which jewelry is the best to start off with, barbell or hoop. Any opinions?
I also have a new tat planned out. I just need to find the right artist.

Then I took it out lol. I had my nose pierced 4 times...twice on each side. Each time it grew a huge keloid that looked like a wart. I tried many different things to help it go away it never did so 3 1/2 years ago i took it out. Is there any way I could have a nose piercing?? I want to try again, but I dont want to deal with a keloid. Any suggestions? maybe it just wasnt meant to be :(

What metal are you peircing/healing with? I can ONLY heal with titanium. If I use anything else I get keloids. Once I'm healed I can use whatever I want but during heling I can only use the titanium. I've lost 4 piercings to "grwoing out" one of them was a piercing I was told was impossible to grow out. I had problems with it not healing for years befoe I took it out. I didn't learn the titanium connection unti li twas too late for that one :(

Okay now that I have more time to type - I have a question/problem. I've had a lot of body piercings before (lip 3x, tongue, eyebrow, 'upper naught bits' lol etc). Anyhow, I have since taken all of those out and now I have my nose done. Problem is : after I switched it from the one they pierced with to a new one I can't get it out! It's the kind that is straight with a ball on the end, not the screw kind. Any ideas? I'm not too worried because I clean around it and have had no problems with it and since it's just a simple diamond it's not like it doesn't 'coordinate' with things I wear or anything. I'd just like to know that I COULD take it out and switch it if I wanted to. And I mean I've really tried to get it out, one time I pulled hard enough that it actually bled some and it would NOT come out.
Ideas??

Stupid question: Were you completely healed when you switched?
I'd go to the shop that did it and ask them to look. It shouldn't stay in like that.
Does it turn? I'd be worried it has healed INTO the piercing.

Not only was I healed, I even waited a month longer than I had to because I didn't have the money to get something to replace it (I can't wear the cheapo stuff like the ones at Claires, something about them makes me break out all red).
It seems like it healed around the small width of the bar and now it won't let the ball part pass through.
And yup it turns perfectly, it didn't heal in it. As I said, it's as if it conformed to the size of the bar and won't let the ball get pushed through :(

I'd call your piercer. Even if they need to snip it out they should have the tools to do it.
i've never heard of that happening. I never tried one that style for fear of knocking it out.
doulajewla-- You could very well have the same issue I do. With my nose I went to titaniu, and up a gauge. then once it healed I went back to a normal size stud. Not all studios keep titanium to pierce with. You could always buy a bar and have the autoclave it first.

only one tat, on tailbone, a celtic knot... it's ugly (I dated the artist) and I was traumatized by its hideousness so I haven't gotten any more yet - it's been almost 15 years. Nein! My tongue was the fastest and easiest to heal. The piercer for my eyebrow was TOTALLY inept though. My friends were watching and one nearly fainted because it was bleeding so badly, then while he fat-fingered the jewelry, he had me hold my own clamp. Of course I've got my eyes closed because there's all this blood flowing into them and I can't tell what's going on. The next day I had a black eye, it was swollen a lot more than it should have, and oh...it was just awful. Then I kept having to take it out and put it back in when I found a job. It got infected a lot. I kept it in until a few years ago, 3 or 4, when I lost the jewelry and just said to hell with it. I got it pierced at a 12 ga (I was a gauge whore and always wanted a bigger than standard gauge for all my initial piercings). Imagine my surprise a few weeks ago when, out of sheer curiousity and complete silliness, I poke at it with a fish hook earring and find there's still a hole! It's closed up to an 18ga, but I bought new jewelry for it and feel fairly punk rock again ;D

I want to start stretching my ears, but I have almost no knowledge about it, especially what the right kind of "natural" plug will be for me to go with. Any advice is appreciated!
I also have been wondering a lot about tattoo ink lately. I have three, including a large piece on my arm, and plan on getting many more. I have to wonder about the safety of putting tattoo ink in my skin. Is there any research on the safety? It's funny that I'm so concerned about everything else going into/onto my body being pure, organic, totally safe, etc., but I never really stopped to think about tattoos. Any insight? Please forgive me if this has been addressed elsewhere in this thread and I missed it! :)

there is alot of research on the safety of tattoo ink. it is safe to put into the skin, but the issue is whether or not it's 'phototoxic' or become toxic when exposed to sunlight.
many modern inks are phototoxic which is why artists recommend not exposing the tats to sunlight. they say it's to help with healing and reduce fading, but phototxicity is an issue too.
older inks are less likely to be phototoxic, but some of them may also have chemicals in them that you don't want.
but yes, there's lots of information out there. just do a search on "tatoo ink safety" and you'll get some good information eventually. :)
---
i suggest healing with titanium too. a larger guage isn't necessarily the answer. my nostril is 14 guage and my septum is 12. i didn't have a problem with healing either.

I stretched my ear to an 8g from the regular hole that you normally get as a kid lol--thats how long ago i got my ears pierced. I did slowly though with a taper that is 2 sizes up--dont go more than that unless you are good with pain. You can do it more, but i dont like to all at once. I am only at an 8g which is considered small, but its fine with me. Use lube though lol....serious use ky or something that you like thats more natural maybe. I dont know what plug you should use, but there are wooden ones, again, i dont know how treated they are and with what. I was ok with the clear one, its not plastic but not good either most likely.
I have a question also---i got my nose pierced a few days ago for the 5th time--every other time i think i played with it too much and developed this growth that disappeared completely after i took out the jewelry. Soooo i tried it again this time---and this time im not doing anything but salt water soaks. I am allergic to soaps, so i think maybe using the dial soap like they tell you is why it got all funky the last 4 times. This is THE last time im doing it though lol. I used titanium this time which i did not use the last few times. Any other suggestions on how to keep this weird growth thing from coming back? so far so good. No irritation, no redness, no pain. It rotates perfectly. Unlike the last few times lol. I am just doing the saltwater soaks...should i be doing something else? I dont think what i had was a keloid only because it disappears so quickly after. I thought hypertrophic scarring but I really dont know. Thanks for any info!
its_our_family
02-19-2008, 08:18 PM
doulajewla-- You are most likely on the right track with the titanium. If I use anything other than titanium I end with hypertrophic scarring. after sme time you might want to try straight up Vitamin E oil.
RikkiJean- If you want to stretch do NOT skip sizes. Start with a 14 gauges and move up. Skipping sizes can cause scarring which will make it hard to stretch to the next size. as far as "natural" go I would anything porous until you are at the size you want and are healed. I'm wearing a lot of glass right now. I always used jewelry that was tapered like a claw or something. then you can move it through slow and not have to worry about putting a taper through and then getting in another piece of jewelry. Do NOT skip sizes. Some people will say it is ok but if you want to have less of a chance of scar tissues and maybe some day want them back to a 'normal" size then go slow. Typically 2 weeks is good in between but I think once you hit an 8g they suggest waiting 4 weeks in between.
I believe mothragirl's hubby is a piercer. I'm pretty sure it is her whose SO has been in documentaries etc. She is a great resource on this thread, as are some other ladies. But from the look of it it isn't a hopping thread like it used to be :)

I have spoken to the piercer and he says he has done thosands (including his own wife), the place is nice and sterile. He said the skin is so thin when it is pulled tight that it doesn't hurt. But I say, no clit no opinion!

I have a triple moon with flowers and my kids' names--green and black and purple. Thats the one that gets the hives. Then i have a birthing goddess one with a ring of stars and moons above it with a half moon on each side and my kids' names in the ring. this is a blue and black tattoo and i have never gotten a reaction with this one. Maybe i am allergic to purple or green ink?
I will try the vit E later on for my piercing. Right now it looks fine--i just really really hope it doesnt get all funny again. It feels different this time too--just feels better, no pain or anything. And im not playing with it this time lol.

Hi all. I haven't posted in awhile. :)
Dp got a call from my tattoo artist. He moved to a different studio. I am so glad that he called. I haven't been to him in a year. I have big plans of adding to my back piece and I would be devastated if I lost track of him.
Do you all go to the same artist?
I guess if I was getting a tat on a different part of my body far away from my back I might go to another guy/gal but the style of tat he did on my back is just very different than most that I have seen.
I have actually had bad dreams of not being able to locate him.

i posted a few weeks ago about my 5th nose piercing....
and i guess its week 3 or 4 and of course, ive developed the thing again. Not a keloid--because this goes away. If i were to take it out like ive always done in the past, it will dry up and be gone in a few days. I dont want to do that.
ive done the salt soaks since ive gotten the piercing, done very little with dial soap, but i have done it a little. I didnt do it that much though because i didnt know if that was the culprit. Ive done the salt water soaks every day 3x a day. This "thing" started 3 days ago I guess. Its a bump around the piercing itself. doesnt really hurt or anything. Today i noticed some bleeding and clear liquid and blood will come out of it. Tried crushed asprin--that seemed to make it bigger. Then i made the saltwater even saltier--seemed to really bring it down a bit. Not enough, but a little bit. I pierced with titanium too--i thought this would be different.
Is there something else I could be doing? has anyone had this before? does it go away eventually? Maybe its just healing and how i heal?
thanks for any advice. I really am trying to keep this one.

Yes titanium! I requested it.
I only used dial twice---but i did not for the first 3 weeks. I only did sea salt and water. I only used the dial because i thought I had pus coming out--probably not though, could have been boogers :shrug:lol I thought dial soap would definitely cause it, but i already had it when i first used it and then havent since. i dont feel good about putting dial soap on it, or any other part of my body. Usually we use dr bronners or nothing because we all have eczema. but im not using any soap on the piercing. I read somewhere that what i have is very common and with proper care it will go away. Already it has shrunk alot so i shall see what happens.

The best thing that seemed to work for my piercings was salt water soaks and leaving them alone. If I fiddled with them too much, they got irritated. Just soak to get the crusty stuff off and ignore it the rest of the time.

I have seven tattoos, all of which I designed and three of which I tattooed myself. Not many piercings, though; just a bunch in my ears. I have also done about 7 tattoos on my brother.
I have a sun on my right shoulder, and a celtic knot of snakes in a band below that. On my left shoulder I have a birds-eye view of a serpent swimming through a river. I have a very bizarre series of lines and stars on my left leg, upper thigh, front, which will probably get covered with a more proper night sky scene (it was my first that I did), and a shamrockish sort of tribal design under that. I have a band on my foot that I never finished when I got pregnant with my first, and I have been nursing or pregnant since, but when my dd is done nursing, I want to finish it, closing a loop around my ankle, and fill in my calf with blowing leaves and butterflies.
So, any mommies with tattooed children yet? My dd (1 yr) has a fake butterfly tattoo on her leg; other than that, mine are too young.

My daughter and I have matching tattoos. Mine is on my right shoulder. Her's is on her boob. It is a crescent moon inside a circle. Mine has three little stars under it. I don't know if my boys have any or not. We've never discussed it.

My brother made a tattoo machine out of a guitar string when he was 15 and gave himself a pretty awful tattoo on his forearm. He told my mom that it was a pen design that he just kept redrawing, and she believed him for 2 years. Now he has his third son on the way, and he is keeping the tattoo in its original state so that his kids know why they shouldn't give themselves tattoos when they're 15.
How fun to have a matching tattoo with your daughter! I don't plan on being too strict with my kids when they are old enough about tattoos, but I think it will be interesting to see what they choose.

I need ideas. I've been thinking about getting a tattoo for a while (my first) but could never find a design that I was sure I'd want forever. I'm thinking of something to honor my kids but need ideas.
It needs to be expandable incase we have more kids. I was think of maybe a footprint inside of interlocking hearts. Any recommendations?

I like your idea, I think it would look nice.
I was thinking of getting a family tattoo also. My idea was to get two interlocking scorpions between my shoulder blades (dh and I are both scorpios), with a bull beneath that and a ram beneath the bull (ds is a taurus and dd is an aries). I guess there are probably lots of ways to design around your family, but I can't think of anything else. I think footprint tattoos look really cute.
Do you know a tattoo artist that you like?

I don't know any tattooo artists. I do have a couple of coworkers that have ink but, I'm looking for something a little more custom. The coworkers are current in Mexico soaking up the sun so I can't ask them for advice right now.

Hello, Mamas! I'm so sorry to do this, but there is some concern that a high number of posts on a given thread could cause stress to the server. I'm going to have to ask you to start a new thread. I'll lock this one, but when you start the new one, I'll add the link here, so that people can find it! :) Thanks!
