Oops...I forgot to reply about the kiddo part.

I have definately experienced this type of treatment.Never in the church we pastor but within other churches. Most of the time it has been die-hard Ezzo or Ezzo type folks.I must admit that it has only been a few times.

I actually find that there is a larger movement of radical Jesus people who could care less about these petty rediculous made up sins and care more for the things that really matter, like peoples souls.

Happy Birthday Milkymommi! You should draw out both designs and show them to us! Although I'm voting for the babe/mommy one myself! :thumb

I actually used the reasoning of women in the bible having nose rings when I had mine done when I was 16. I am christian, but I haven't been to church in a long time (bad experiences) but I'm pretty sure I'd be looked at oddly if my tattoos showed. The nose ring is small, the tounge ring isn't noticed right away, and my ear piercings aren't seen as odd very much anymore...

Yes Milkymommi--Happy Birthday!!! And I'd love to see the drawings too! I am so envious of you mamas who are talented enough to draw your own stuff...I majored in Chemistry for more than one reason! Lisa...I love the design! I don't have anything that big but around here, about $100 an hour is pretty average too. I have been trying to come up with something that would represent my children but haven't decided on anything yet. My dh has all of our names on him(among an assortment of other tats.) LOL-we joke that he should have put our birthdates too cuz he is terrible at remembering them! Anyway, whatever I do to represent them will likely be a pretty large piece too, but I'll have to get someone else to draw it up for me.

Oh and I don't really move in conservative circles other than the other hs families we run into, but I don't know if my piercings or tats really put people off...the 12 rings in my ears and the ring in my nose are pretty noticeable for those who care to notice, so I assume that there probably are people who have avoided me because of that, but I don't think it's bothered anyone who actually has engaged in conversation with me.
:D It's more often my Harry Potter lovin kids that scare really conservative religious people away!:D

"I actually find that there is a larger movement of radical Jesus people who could care less about these petty rediculous made up sins and care more for the things that really matter, like peoples souls."

Yes, I have defintely found this to be true as well.

Hey Tattooed mammas!
I'm not a conservative or traditionally religious person, but I just wanted to chime in and say WOO HOO! It's great to know that there are some open minded, colorfull, pierced, self described "jesus freaks".... more power to ya!

I have a patient who is a pastor for a youth church.... and he is 58, and has more tats and piercings than I do.... now HE rocks!
Peace to all!

Thanks SO much for all the B-day well wishes!!! :grouphug
That really made me feel great...it's crazy the bonding that goes on with these boards!:LOL

I'll ask my best friends up stairs if they'll scan my pic of the mom and baby one so I can put it up here for you to see. You'll have to tell me if it looks too close to any trade marks you've seen.I've seen SOOOOO many that I'm nervous the design is coming from something recessed in my memory :LOL

Now the "elvish script" will be tough.I've gotta work on that one a bit 1st.

I think this will become one of my more frequent hang outs here at MDC now...I'm feelin this mamas!

I totally understand the weird looks from Christians. I went to a friends baby shower and tho my friend and her immediate fam is cool, most of their friends completely looked down at me. Nose ring, tat, and I own a boutique that is really NOT Dallas, so I was a little more funkily dressed than anyone else.

I don't get it, who says I can't be a witness through my artistic expression? And then sometimes people will be cool about it but act like "of course you did that b4 you were a christian, right?"

that said, I also have come across a whole lot of cool christians too, wish I could find a good church!

Hey fello Tatted mom! :wave
Just wanted to sugguest trying a Calvary Chapel (http://www.CalvaryChapel.org)
Its a non-Denominational church. Was started in the 60s/70s on the coast of California by Pastor Chuck Smith and He himself (& 1/2 the Pastors around the west 1/2 of the US) were the traditional Beach bums... Stoned & Tattooed up & all!:D It is truely a "come as you are" church! I been going (been to 3-4 different ones over the years) for about 8 years. We'VE LOVED EM ALL!! :love I've never had a problem with judging...

I do not move in conservative circles at all, nor am I Christian. I personally wouldn't let the possibility of someone being put off stop me from getting inked. But to each their own.

Talk about being tongue tied! :LOL LOL its hilarious!

Well I've been MIA from this thread for a while! I got that new piercing!!! I decided on................Drum roll please........................................... My tongue!!

It was fun!I did it last Sunday after church :LOL I was not afraid of the piercing itself as I was sure it wouldn't hurt but I had one question for the guy.I said " Look, am I gonna swell up forever or is this bad boy gonna heal pretty quick? I'm a Pastor and I gotta sing next Sunday so if that's enough time then we're good!" He laughed and looked a bit surprised.I LIVE for shock value!!!

Anyway, I still want to show you all that tat I drew.My friends that can scan it for me had their 1st babe 5 wks early so they just got home.I'll bother them soon to do it though :D

So cool to meet all the new posters here!!WE have quite the tribe here huh?

Oh boy Kristie! Are you swollen still? I LOVE my tounge piercing, but I will NEVER get it redone if it heals up. I was swollen and my whole face hurt for two weeks (I have jaw problems anyways, the swelling really affected that). I was talking like I was drunk for two weeks too! I wish you better and quicker healing that that!

I'm hoping I can start in on my new half sleeve (or is this a quarter sleeve??) (http://www.mattandlisahart.com/orion.jpg) for my birthday (Feb 27th). I know I'll have to have sessions and that it'll take a bit to pay for it all, but we spent about $200 for Dh's birthday and I figure that much will be enough for the first session (or close to it). I still have to go get it priced and see if the style is something my normal artist thinks he can do well.

I just got a new nose stud too. A little one with a light blue stone in it. Wow, I just thought, in a month exactly I will have had my nose pierced for ten years! I use to buy those little cheapo twisty studs and decided to just shell out the $ to get a decent surgical steel one. The piercer trimmed the end and shaped it perfectly to my nose, so I'm really happy with it. It doesn't try to pop out, and it doesn't tickle the inside of my nose! Woo!

I really wish I could get a labret. I mean I *could* but Dh thinks they are ugly (but he did specifically say if I wanted it to get it done) and I don't want to go get a piercing he thinks is ugly! *Sigh* and I always get so freaked out when I get a new piercing. A tattoo, my nerves aren't too bad, but a piercing I get SOOO nervous!!!

:rotflmao LOL LOL LOL Ms. Doula! Hehehehheee Exactly why I added that little bit of info to my siggy! I've been wanting to change my username for awhile now, Lisa_Lynn is just so boring! But wow you remembered my drawing! I feel special!

Yes Nicke I drew it :) And then fiddled with it on the computer to get the stars in the right spots and the lines added. You couldn't tell it was the Orion constilation otherwise... I think it looks really cool, but I have to make sure the artist is good with color, because I don't want any black outlines... My artist has only really done blackwork on me, with a hint of color here or there, so I really need to speak to him and see if he thinks he can do this guy justice!

Starmama... great design! ITA with you on never doing it again if it heals! I'm not swollen anymore, that only took about a week (only...yaaah!) but I swear if it ever heals over, that's the end of the road for me :LOL

I love it now though!!!! Only problem is I think I play with it too much.Does that ever stop? I can't seem to quit messin with it.I wonder if it gets to the point where you just don't notice it.

I'd like a labret too! That'll have to wait though...new tat next :D

StarMama
01-30-2004, 06:36 AM
Yeah you'll stop playing with it after awhile :) I still do on rare occasions, but not very often. Mostly when I'm trying to show it off... like to scare some conservative person (like MIL) or to be like "Hey Hey just cuz I have a kid I'm still cool! See? See??" :LOL Ok I'm pitiful!

Careful about taking the jewerly out for long! I had mine out for 20 minutes once (had taken it out to replace it with a clean one, the joy of plaque  ) and it was a tiny bit tough to get back in. Its pretty funny when I clean it though! I have one of those water picks and I clean out the hole with it, making the water go thru it!

Can I ask everyone's opinion? I brought the art to my tattoo artist and he thinks it may be too much blue. I really got the blue idea from a different tattoo I saw (which I should have brought a picture of, I don't think he *quite* understood what I wanted, in the printout the colors are quite as clear), so I was wondering if you guys wouldn't mind checking out my idea and letting me know what you think?

Once again here is the drawing:
http://www.mattandlisahart.com/orion.jpg

And here is the two photos I was drawing some color ideas from (they were originally from www.bmezine.com, but I couldn't find the originals there):
http://www.mattandlisahart.com/tat_bme.asp

The top photo, the sleeve how the blue is there, *almost* stripes is what I'm going for, and the bottom one, I like how the little "stars" are (the white dots) how they go from white to light blue to darker blue like that.

Do you think its too much blue? My artist thought maybe just shading just around the "white" (untattooed) areas would look cool, but I want a *sleeve* (or is that a quarter sleeve? Anyways I want it to cover the area like the first tattoo with the "almost stripes" does). I'm tired of getting smaller tattoos just because they cost less, or I'm trying to "not get in too deep". With eight tattoos and eleven piercings I think I'm already pretty deep! His second idea was to maybe make the background, instead of a solid blue, to make designs like water/air elements. I might like the idea, but then again I think it might be too busy, I don't want to loose the main idea. He's going to draw up his idea for me so I can really see it all how he's talkinga about it. My other idea, if I decide its "too blue" is to let him do the shading just around it, with the blue, going from dark to light and then around that to the edges smokey stars, either in grayscale or "bluescale" if that makes sence. I really want the full upper arm on the outside done, and not simply just a piece there...

It was pretty funny, I showed him it and told him the size and he was like "Wow. That's a LOT of drilling!". When I got my armband done he seemed amazed I didn't need breaks! I even have a photo of him tattooing the underside of my arm smiling!
http://www.mattandlisahart.com/metattooed.jpg

But I would appreciate some info from others who have gotten large pieces. Painwise versus smaller pieces? Healing?

Millie Ivy
01-30-2004, 08:41 AM
Thanks for the link to Calvary Church, that looks pretty cool!

And Lisa, I love the artwork for your sleeve! I think the blue is fine, though if you wanted to break it up a bit w/o making it too busy you could pull in another shade, like a purply or something. keep the design, but have a bit more shading difference, you know?

but really, i like it the way it is!

love this thread!! My boyfriend came over and read all my posts here, and was, like, "yeah, you belong here, Shell..."

Personally, I like the blue a lot. It is my favorite color though. ;) Really though, I think it is a personal decision. Plenty of people get large tattoos that have a lot of one particular color. Some I like, some I don’t. But what matters is that the person who has it loves it. Check out his drawing and see what he comes up with, it can't hurt. But go with what you like and what you can see living with. Don't let his personal opinion (or anyone else’s for that matter) sway you. :)

Joi
01-30-2004, 10:22 AM
I also dig the blue............ I have three large pieces and well, the pain is very real. I broke up my chest into two sessions and my arm into 4 (including a touch up session) Healing was pretty easy and I give all the credit to my artist. It is a nastier healing but not too much different (care wise) from a smaller one. Oh and it can be whole worlds more itch-y.

Ms.Doula
01-30-2004, 12:54 PM
Lisa, Id deffinatly stick to what you like, and not what the Artist thinks would look better! :nod

ALSO.... for what it's worth... even though YOUR oppinion (& DH's- if you choose) is what counts. I will say this:

I love the blue shades. Maybe add a 3rd blue shade in there with a purple tint?? or just 3 different shades of blue?? I Like the style of the stars on the second photo better. The actual white with "rings" of blue around em. Makes it stand out more. Besides the Uncolored areas on the one with actual star "shapes" (on the first one)... it was Unfinnished looking to me. I didnt care for em. Besides, with what you are going for (constellation) the Star SHAPES look funny.

So theres my oppinion. :moon :LOL

StarMama
01-31-2004, 01:26 AM
Thank you all for your opinions :D Anyone else??

Ms. Doula I see what your saying about the star "shapes" but I still like um :D Besides if I didn't what the worst case? Just fill those in! LOL! But no, really I like the whole "uncolored" stuff I have done and want that to stay the same.

I really need to show my artist these printouts so he understands more of what I'm wanting. And I will do what I like, but he's doing a lot of tattoos, you know? So he might have some insight into what might look better or not... Every tattoo he's done he's tweaked it just a litle (of COURSE asking my permission first) and I really liked how he added to the design, so I do trust his opinion when he says 'this might look better'. But I do think he may just not quite understand the idea totally... So I'll bring the other printouts down there when I go next :)

Can I ask you a few more questions?

How long were each of the sessions? The shop won't let me bring Orion in with me, but will allow my Dh to hang out outside with him and I can take nursing breaks in the car, but that sounds like a huge pain! I want Dh to be with me! And how not fun would it be to just hang out in a car with the baby for a long time? But I don't want to leave Orion for too long with anyone for something not neccesary. But if its about 2 hours or so I could nurse him, leave him with some milk, and then nurse when I return and not be missing much of a nursing if its during the day (he nurses a lot more at night due to a VERY low supply). Boy I wonder how my MIL would react to being asked to watch Orion while I got a tattoo done! LOL! She wouldn't want me to get the tattoo done, but she loves watching Orion so much she wouldn't say no!

How long did you space out the sessions? I'd think a larger piece would take longer to heal, so I'm just not positive about how long would be a good spacing. I don't think I'd like more work done when its still in the OW don't touch me! stage.

Finally are you happy with how low the tattoo goes? Like tee shirts would only show a little bit of it, which might be annoying if you want to show it off, and annoying if you want to hide it! I haven't 100% decided if I want to end it right where a normal shirt would hit, or go lower... I'm thinking to just go lower, most of my tee shirts are tiny sleeves, and show my other armband...

Oh Ms. Doula! I forgot to say, the little stars that make up the constilation aren't going to be white, but skin colored as well... what's your opinion on that? I'd LOVE to get the skin colored area white, but it doesn't really "stick" except for highlights in my skin, even though I'm very pale... I might have a little highlight in them, but not much...

Joi
02-03-2004, 11:17 AM
The sessions were about three hours a piece (that number really all depends on how long you can handle it for me three hours were more than enough) I spaced the sessions out into every 3 - 31/2 weeks to allow for healing (it is NEVER fun to tattoo still healing scabbed flesh). And finially... yes I am very pleased with the spacing because it is the start od sleeves and because this one was for me........... so, only the people I want to see it can. It does poke out from a tee shirt sleeve a little but honestly, I like the reaction when people go "what is that?" and I lift my sleeve. :LOL :LOL :LOL The surprised looks I get amuse me.

StarMama

Thanks for the info! 3 weeks it took to heal out each time? Is that your norm, or do the large ones just take longer? All my tattoos have healed in a week, one in 2 weeks because it was in a spot that moved and bent a lot....

Joi

I found due to the large areas and intensity of color it took a little longer to heal.

Yes, since you have very fair colored skin, I think it will look just as good. I just prefer the "clean finnish" the white gives me though..... and it takes alright on me sooo... thats why I prefer it over a blank spot. I guess it still just depends on you, and how you take ink... ;)

Hi all! I havent gotten around to posting here yet, nor have I read any of this thread besides whats on this page so forgive me if I am redundent.

I am 23 years old working on a MSW. I have my ears peirced and have had toung, eyebrow, and nostril peircings. I would like to redo the toung (it has closed up twice once when I was in a holding cell when I was 17 :blush and once when I was 20 and had to get a dental xray). I really want to get it done again, but dh says he hates tounge peircings unless I plan on 'using it' :rolleyes :Puke.

I have a tatoo of Ciciley Mary Barker's THE Willow Fairy covering my right upper arm. I have a blackberry fairy on the upper left (shoulder and blade) quadrant of my arm. This was oneday going to become a huge backpeice, but I got pg. B4 I had Dylan I began researching vaccines and discovered that tatoo inks contain thimerosol, just wondering if any of you guys ask for thimerosol free ones orwhat?

I have a kokopelli on the spine (small of back) and three stupid looking ladybugs done with India Ink and a safety pin when I was 15 on my stomach (hipbone area.) Ok, now I am going to read this thread!

Hey Lisa,
I just wanted to toss in my two cents about the white...even if the white might fade with your skin color, it will still be there and prevent the other colors from "bleeding" into the stars over time. This two cents I have to admit isn't my own, it comes from a conversation I had with THE Pat Fish, Queen of Celtic Tattoo (gods, I love her work!). Apparently, the white will keep your tattoo sharper looking over time than if there is no color added.
So, just a thought...and maybe a reason to have the white done? I'm sure it will look great either way--it's a very cool design!

hotmamacita- I am going to put some pix of myself and family up soon, as soon as my brother can teach me how to do all that fancy linking and digital camera stuff, so I will just throw in a few pix then. My arm took 5.5 hours and the unfinished back has taken 5 hours so far. Before we got married, dh's roomate was (well he still is, just isn't his roomie anymore) a tattoo artist so I got them done pretty cheaply. The WIllow faerie was my wedding presant. It was a big surprise for both dh and my mom when I came down the stairs in my strapless white dress with a bright new tattoo! :LOL But it was also the cover to my wedding invitations,so pretty symbolic there.

OOOH! Tattoo talk!
I have my ears pierced MULTIPLE times, my nose, and I had my toungue, belly button, and lip at one time or another, but let them all close up. My nose has been done for 12 years, and I can't imagine my face without it!
Lots of tattoos-
wedding necklace-(for dh & I) a chain of small flowers, and leaves with a dragonfly on lt. collarbone, and a butterfly on rt. collarbone
Fairy and sun on rt. shoulder, snowflakes and 'leaf man' on left shoulder (for the 4 seasons)
'seal of protection' in a tribal sun on upper abdomen
string of roses on left wrist, string of Brown-eyed Susans on rt wrist
Angel/fairy holding a little boy (for my son) on outer left calf
Sm. fairy above a rose on outer rt. calf
yin-yang sun and moon on inner rt calf
anklet on rt ankle
a couple I did myself back in the day, that I am getting removed... My next tattoo is one for dd. I hope to get it this spring!

Hey, cool thread!

I began researching vaccines and discovered that tatoo inks contain thimerosol, just wondering if any of you guys ask for thimerosol free ones orwhat?

Try starbright ink, the ingredients are :alchohol, distilled water, glycerin, color #*****(depending on color)
It says also: this product is non-toxic, pure organic pigment.
If you are concerned, ask your artist what type of ink he/she uses before getting inked and look up the ingredients yourself.

hey, i bet you guys can help me. i have a lipring (which has been done twice) and i am wanting another piercing and dh said i could do it this weekend. i would LOVE to have my lip done again, but i will probably wait until we're somewhere with less farmers and old people. so i am probably going to do either my eyebrow again or else my labret.

have any of you gotten work done while breastfeeding? or do i wait until she's weaned (which could be years)?

and i apologize if this has been covered already :o . you guys are at sixteen pages!

Well, I got my nose ring done and my tatto while BF. I was really concerned too, but I found a place I really trust and had excellent references for and felt pretty good about it. For the record, I am still tandem nursing and planning my next body art!!! When I was talking to the tattoo artist and the peircer, I made this huge deal about the fact that I was nursing and totally paranoid about cleanliness, and their reactions were very calming, concerned, and made me feel good. If they got confrontational or defensive I would have thought maybe they had a reason to worry, you know?

Anyhoo, HTH!

okay, since there has been one confessor:D I will also admit that I had my nose pierced and my recent tattoo done even though I am nursing. I was nursing an older toddler though, not a new-ish nursling--I don't know if that would sway other people, but I did not worry as much because of that. And I also feel really good about the place I go.

the place i go to is a pretty reputable establishment. i guess i read somewhere that the baby can end up tasting the adrenaline or something  but i don't know if that applies to piercings or tattoos. should i just pump-and-dump?

thanks!

Weighing in late, some how missed plum's post.....

Since your nursling is fairly young, you might want to pump-and-dump once, just to make sure that no odd flavors creep in to possibly cause temporary disruption in your nursing relationship.

That said, if you decide not to, I'll bet that it won't be a big deal.

peace,
alsoSarah

(also, I always recommend that people take vitamins following a piercing (a multi and zinc is great) to help their body handle the healing process.... and I would be even more "all about that" for a nursing mama. A new piercing can temporarily increase your susceptibilty to colds and flu, too.... if that worries you, you might want to wait out the season....)

I think the biggest reason they say not to get tats or piercings while you are pregnant or nursing is the fear of hepatitis. You wouldn't want to pass that on to your little one. IMHO if you are sure of the sterility of the place you are using, there shouldn't be a problem.

Putting context clues to work here, I'm going to guess.... subdermal implants?

02-24-2004, 02:26 PM
Yup. Subdermal implants. Don't know how family friendly this topic is, so don't want to say much more. I'm curious if anyone has had any problems with theirs. My partner is quite willing to do this for me and I think it could be fun, but if it goes awry, I'm nervous about the possible outcomes. Just seems that infection would almost be a given, but I'm just guessing here. He had barbells put in before I met him, and we/he never had any problems with them. After the birth of my DD he has taken them out. (Painful for me.) We're thinking that pearls may work better for us. If you know of another place where I could get some reputable advice, I'd really appreciate it.

alsoSarah
02-24-2004, 03:28 PM
Migration is a really big issue with subdermal implants.

Also (and as with any conventional piercing), there are the risks of rejection, hypertrophic scarring, or keloids.

As far as the, um experience , I have heard them spoken of fondly :D

I have no firsthand experience with "using" them myself. :mischief

For more info, you might try BME, or even google it. (I'd try "subdermal implants" + "male", or +"penis", or "genital beading")

:banana Session One done!

The sketch (http://www.mattandlisahart.com/tattoos%20003.jpg)

Orion tattoo (http://www.mattandlisahart.com/tattoos%20008.jpg)

Session Two coming in 2 weeks :)

We shot for doing it all in one night, but the tattoo artist estimated WAY off time wise. I didn't think 3 hours sounded right at all anyways... Still, only being charged 3 hours worth of work for the whole thing! They are hard up for work I think (our town, which I don't really think is a big tattoo town) has 3 tattoo shops and this one is in the back of a headshop, so its not well advertised, and the owner LOVED my design and just wants my good word of mouth. Hey NO problem! Especially when it looks like this tattoo is going to run 6 1/2 hours or so (I figure I've got 3 hours to go).

They have the rest of the bulk of blue to do, all the lighter blue to do, as well as finer details, like the stars in the constilation, and the while highlights. The color work the artist has done (seen in portfolio and while he was working, I came in a few times) is AWESOME! And I really like that they take photos of their work after its healed on big pieces, really shows that their color *sticks* and still looks good after healing.

I'm SO psyched about finding this guy! My old artist does awesome black work, but his color work isn't as bright and lovely as this new artist. And he KNOWS when I needed a break and was done. I was trying to tough it out you know? And I was just mentally thinking "I need a break, I need a break" and he suggested one. Same thing when I was just DONE. I was really happy with him, as far as the shops cleanliness. Showed me all the new sterlized needles, changed gloves if he touched anything not specifically newly wrapped for my use (even covers the lotion bottle top so he doesn't cross contaminate). And I really drilled them over their cleanliness before I made the appointment. Especially because I'm still nursing. And I was asking him a ton of questions, just about all sorts of tattooing stuff cuz I'm interested and he was very nice and answered all of them and didn't get annoyed or anything.

Anywho, another thing, I was wondering if anyone has healed their tattoos via the "occulsive bandaging" method? I read about it on BME (www.bmezine.com beware not for the faint hearted) and it really made sence to me. What you do is keep it under saran wrap for 3 days, changing every 24 hours (some people need more, because they will get a "diaper rash). Keeping a light layer of either A&D ointment or tattoo goo on it. The idea is its the same as using occulsive bandages for burn victims. It's supposed to trick the skin into not making scabs (or keep them to a minimum) while keeping it well hydrated. I've read a lot of good things about it, so I decided to give it a try. As a plus, with the saran wrap on my arm I can lay down on it! A big WOO when cosleeping and nursing all freaking night long! And I can put clothes on over it! Course, my arm is all wrappy for 3 days, but if it works like it should it'll be well worth while.

I don't wanna wait two more weeks to finish! But I also don't want anything sharp touching my arm! LOL! My DH loves it too, which is really important to me. Prior to starting all he could keep saying was "that's gonna be awful big" and I wasn't sure if that meant 'I won't like it'. I'm really big on not doing things to my body that Dh wouldn't like. Not because he would mind, but because I really LIKE being beautiful to him and I like him appreciating my body art. I want a labret, but haven't gotten it because of that (even though Dh insists that I should get it anyways because I want it).

Ok, ok, I'll stop talking now. Lack of sleep + tylenol for owie tooth (cold sensitive) = SERIOUS talker! :nut

Thank you everyone!!

Can I ask a question of anyone who's had a lot of coloring done on their tats? (most of mine don't have a ton of color) How much color did you loose on it while healing? When I woke up and cleaned off my tattoo and there are spots that had "goo" of the color on them and the color under that when I gently wiped is lighter. I'm thinking its normal, but I'm just not sure...

Here's a link:

Day 2 (http://www.mattandlisahart.com/smallday2.jpg)

I know that I was warned I could loose a little color during the healing process, and of course I'll have free touch ups, but I'm just curious how others have healed big ol' color pieces.

Oh Bella Babe here's a link to some new professional photos we had done of Orion:

New Orion Photos (http://www.mattandlisahart.com/valentines.asp)

Welcome Mel Mel and mwanamaker0209! Nice to see new faces :D

I wanted to post phase two of my tattoo! Session 2 (http://www.mattandlisahart.com/tattoos2%20001.jpg)

I'm very :yikes: right now, the second session color doesn't match the first one!! Its been over a week, and I can see that yes, its not just dark!!! I'm so irked, I told the artist that he had mixed two colors, and he swore he hadn't! He said if he was wrong he'd fix it, but I LOVE the light blues and the shading from the first session, I don't WANT the whole thing the darker blue with no shading! :crying

I go back down next monday for what should have been the final session (but now that he's gonna have to fix the color somehow I think it'll be more). People still stop me and ooooh and ahhhhh over it, so I know its still pretty, but ARG!

I'm getting more work done tomorrow, so I will post updates after that. Tomorrow, we are working on the mirror image to the left side that's already done. In the coming months, we are going to take it up the back of the neck and onto the arms... and....?

Dh is working on full sleeves w/ a few other random pieces and has his nipples pierced...

I have a couple of holes in each ear and I did have both sides of my nose pierced, but bumps grew in the insides on my nostrils and it was painful -cysts maybe- and I had to take them out.

I have 4 tats
-a moon and star, right ankle I got when I was 15
-my DH's name and a daisy on my right hip that I got right before we married
-celtic knotwork above my left breast
-tribal sun on the back of my neck/upper back

I plan to get more, I just don't know what to get yet!

Thanks... the small flower at the top center came out of the inside binding of a book. My friend who is doing the tattoo has done the rest pretty much freehand. He just sketches a little on my skin with a marker and then does the rest... I trust him a lot, shall we say...

It is meaningful to me in a few ways - the artist and I both went through drug treatment together for heroin addiction. So, the piece for me represents the continual hard work, pain and ultimately growth from the whole experience of staying clean and growing up.

be well.

about the law in Georgia: what ms. doula said.

about the eyeball (angstmommy): I dont know!!!!! I hope not, as I am not really a fan. I was sloppy with that one. it was flash, I was in a hurry, and it was a coverup. I had a wacky homemade one there (done with a lego gun..yes, LEGO:LOL , apparently, they made motorized lego kits and friends of mine made a tattoo gun out of legos. it worked much slower than most, obviously:eek, a bit painful as well..so naturally it didnt make a good line, so I had a sloppy design there to cover up) but I was just sitting around the parlor, waiting to consult with my guy....about a custom cover-up (I had brought some designs, and he is so good with his own, too..he designed the fish which was another cover-up) but then I saw that eyeball, in a book, and really loved it.

what made you think it was from tool??? do they have a similair logo or something, do you have a link?

StarMama

Tool Eyeball (http://www.bmezine.com/tattoo/A40125/high/dsc002900.jpg)

I was also going to point out that law... bmezine has an article on it with contact info for the representative who made this "brillant" idea end up in the law... and has the addys of the other Georgia’s Senators who signed the bill.

Here's that link BMEZINE Article (http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20040325.html)

If you go read the bill, its crazy, I mean it's all well and good to want to keep FGM from happening, but it says:

(c) This Code section shall not apply to procedures performed by or under the direction of a physician, a registered professional nurse, a certified nurse midwife, or a licensed practical nurse licensed pursuant to Chapter 34 or 26, respectively, of Title 43 when necessary to preserve the physical health of the female or during or after labor or childbirth for medical reasons connected with the labor or childbirth.

So you can't even have genital surgery, say, if your internal labia are too long and you just don't like how the look, or if you *want* any other alterations done downstairs. Yes, PLEASE make it illegal to circ a child (*ahum* of EITHER sex thank you), but its crap that a full grown man could decide he WANTS a circ and could get it, without so much as a blink of the eye, but if a woman wanted something altered or removed (which yes makes me go :eek but men shouldn't have the RIGHT to alter *their* genitalia if women don't!! And I do know from web searching there are women wo DO and HAVE altered their parts because they, as ADULTS, wanted to) she couldn't! How SEXIST!

left upper arm: red & purple sun and stone unicorn
right leg: gargoyle (back of calf) and yin/yang frog (above ankle)
left leg: 2 stone angels (I drew one of them), a geometrical pattern made up of triangles (I drew), and on the back of my calf, a figure of a mama tandem nursing (my most recent tattoo, also drawn by me!)

I will (hopefully soon!) be getting another tat on my left leg (my poor right leg has been ignored for the longest time!), and then getting "permanent henna" designs tattooed from the top of my foot to my knee, weaving around my existing tattoos (tandem nursing tattoo is done with all henna-colored ink, no black). I've got to do some research for the design of this first, though!

I love my tattoo artist...he's done all but 2 of my tattoos (which were done before I met him!). When he did my last tattoo, my kids were playing with his daughter in the background, and they kept coming up and checking the progress every once in a while. It was great!

Indigo73...My tattoo artist is Barry Lent. He used to be with The Edge in New Haven, but is opening his own place soon. I actually got my most recent tattoo done in his basement! I'll hopefully be getting inked in May...I guess I should call him and find out if his shop opened yet! :p He's still in the New Haven area.

This thread has been around for awhile and silly me I have forgotten if I have checked in here. I am the lucky one in the group. My Dh is a tattoo artist. Although that makes it really easy for me to not get it all done on one sitting. My largest piece is still unfinshed after almost 4 years. It was started then I got pregnant...I am just done nursing so I am getting it finished friday. On my left arm a fairie sitting on amanita mushrooms with a tree in the background with the sun setting. On my right arm a rose...which will become a 1/2 sleeve of flowers. I have a sun on one ofmy legs. These were all done by DH. I also have a sea turtle on my lower back that I got done when I was 18.

No piercings anymore. I had eyebrow, nose, lip.

I'll just stick to ink :)

Hi there,
This is my first visit, and I am wondering about the risks of tattooing while breastfeeding. I have an almost 7 mos old and wanted to comemerate my first mothers day with some new ink, but now I'm not sure if I can. So, is it a universally accepted truth that I have to wait until my babe is weaned?

I have tree small pieces and did have my tongue peirced, but could taste the metal when I first got pregnant and took it out after a couple of days.

Thanks for any and all input,

Well I'm in the midst of a large armpiece (quarter sleeve) and I'm currently nursing an 8 month old. The risks of getting tattooed while breastfeeding is hep b from unclean equipment.

Here's a link from kellymom: http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/mom-activities.html#Tattoos

Of course, some moms choose to wait, so its a personal choice. But if you choose to go ahead make SURE everything is as it should be, sterility wise, where you go.

I've got a sleeping babe on my arm so sorry to be brief.

And I need to get a new pic up of my new piece! Session #4 is on tuesday (SHOULD be final session, funny I was quoted 3 hours of work, its going to end up being 10 or more!)

Can I join as well? I have four tattoos and I used to have my tongue perced (had to take it out). My husband and I share matching tattoos on our shoulders. We are both ready for a couple more. My husband wants a cat on the top of his foot.

I feel that I am qualified to be here.

Do I need to take a test?

Do I need to kiss some @ss?

Whose @ss would you suggest I kiss?

Do I need to give some DNA?

Or is there a psychological exam I can pass?

If I do get to join....when will my fruit basket arrive?

I have a celtic? type design with flowers in it across my lower back. i have one that matches that except for more up and down on my right hip. Five tats only 2 remaining piercings of 5.
Tats: frog smoking on top of a mushroom on right shoulder blade, tribal across lower back with my initials in celtic letters in the center of it, teardrop peace sign on left calf, chinese symbol of good luck on back of neck, tribal piece on right upper bicep of soul's battle to let in the good and keep out the bad.
Piercings: tongue and cartiledge left, had belly button and both nipples.
Thought it was best to take out the belly ring when preggers with ds #1 and thought bfing would be much easier without hoops thru my nipples :LOL

1 out of 8 piercings remaining

Loved the piercings...should have thought a little more about some of the tattoos! Well, we all learn, don't we? (Naked female fairy takes up entire right calf, and I am a teacher with young children, which means keeping it covered most of the time, even during those HOT summer months!) Perhaps one day I'll have it touched up to add some gauzy fabric around her to cover up those unmentionable areas!!! :)

Hi. I'm new here. Just found this thread. Looks like fun. I've got one tattoo and my belly button pierced. I have a problem with my belly button, though. Maybe you all can help me. I had to get it pierced twice because the first time was just done poorly. I've had it for several years but got pregnant last year and had to take the ring out because it was bothering me. I'm now afraid the hole has closed up. I tried to push the ring through it but I'm a bit of baby and stopped as soon as it started to hurt. Should I just get a sharp ring and push it through or do you think I need to get it repierced? If I do need to get it repierced, is it possible to get it redone in exactly the same place? Thanks.

I *really* need to get inked soon! Unfortunately my dh was out of work for a while, so the $ that was supposed to be for my next tat (or two or three!) went to our basic survival. :(

I want an oroboros (sp? serpent eating its' tail) similar to the auryn to finish out the grouping of tats on my left lower leg (2 stone angels, a geometrical pattern and a figure of a mama tandem nursing). Then my tattoo artist is going to do "permanent henna" style tattooing from the top of my foot to my knee to complete that leg. Then I'll have to get to work on my neglected right lower leg, which only has 2 tats!

So many plans, so little money!

Angstmommy I love the Monkey! He makes me smile!!

Alysia, go to a piercing shop they may be able to open it with a taper, then you won't have to heal it out again like a new piercing. Don't just shove something through, if its really closed and can't be tapered open get it done right, belly buttons seem to be *hard* to heal (I lost mine a long time ago) and the trauma of you just shoving something sharp through could make it a lot harder...

Amanda, your project sounds really cool! Esp the tandem nursing tattoo :D

My tattoo went well, I have to get Dh to take photos and get me access again to my webpage so I can post photos for everyone! I'm happy with it :D My tattoo artist REALLY wants me to get it going all the way around, I'm pondering it, but not going to go under the arm while I still have to sleep on that arm to nurse Orion. And I'm also kinda concerned about going under since I'm overweight, and if I loose weight it might look awfully funky under there... I'm going back when it heals for him to photograph to submit to a tattoo magazine! Wow! I think that's pretty darn cool!!

I went to my best friend's baby's first birthday over the weekend and an old friend was there, giving me crap about my tattoo... saying "Why don't you just get a big tattoo on your forehead already!" because what I have is already "impossible to hide". Yeah, ok, sure. That's why it purposefully ends right before where a normal tee shirt would hit. Its a bit of a new experience, having a large tattoo. I got stared down by about 10 women in a froo froo nail salon in Napa the other day because of it too. :LOL Its neat being different :firedevil And I actually *do* want a facial tattoo (a tiny star near the corner of my eye) but I'm not going there. At least not where there is any chance that I might want/need to work again in the future... although a tiny star would be easy to cover with makeup... but no, I think I'm WAY too young to get something on my face, I think I might regret it. But it is a cute idea, and in high school I'd draw one on with eyeliner sometimes :D

I got my navel pierced on April 13th (spur of the moment;went to mail something, came back pierced..... :eyesroll )
Anyways, the top 'hole' is not healing very well, still sticky. The piercer has had all sorts of ideas: tea tree oil, epsome salts (ow..burned my skin!!), crushed Bayer asprin applied to the outside as a paste to reduce swelling.....nothing is working. It now looks as though there is a small blister under the top bead of the barbell. He says I need to go to a bigger piece of jewellry, with more 'play' in it in order to heal....except if I buy that, ($40) I won't have the money to but the butterfly piece I originally wanted. I have decided to try applying polysporin (against his advice) to the site to see if it helps. I can't see how it could make it worse. Anyone out there have any other advice?
Thanks in advance! Other than that, I love it! My girlfriend is wanting to get her "southern region" pierced. I've heard it described as both pleasing to the eye AND the owner....... ;)

Oh yeah, I've been very careful NOT to handle it, always wash my hands with anti-bacterial soap first, not get bodily fluids in it :blush

Ooh sea salt soaks are good (I've used table salt just fine too), but VERY diluted, I don't know the exact measurements, but I put just a sprinkle in a shotglass with warm water (and then you can hold it over your belly button and let it soak for 15 minutes). That might help. Tea tree oil if you use it should also be diluted, but I've never used it so I don't know what... And don't use much soap to clean it either, its very drying to your skin...

Other things that could be going on would either be a reaction to the metal the jewerly is made of, maybe try titanium, or surgical steel if you don't already have that. Or it could be rejecting, which is pretty hard to stop. Keep clothes from chafing it (like your waistband), and maybe try changing the jewerly to something bigger (but if its just gonna reject it still might). Belly button piercings are a PAIN to heal... Good luck with it! :D

Eh, my experience with it isn't that grand... Yes its pretty, but it gets 'pinchy' and can get in the way... You get used to the sensation. Oh yes, its a hood piercing I have too. :D A good thing about hood piercings is they heal very quickly!

China white
05-18-2004, 08:48 PM
Yes, the post is surgical steel, and I'm wondering if I have to go to gold, as I am sensitive to most metals. God, I hope it's not rejecting.....I'll cry. I'm going to try the Polysporin for a few days and see if improves. Are there any other signs of rejection I should be looking out for? I have a sneaking suspision(sp?) that nursing my toddler while he is performing his 'acrobatics' is not helping matters......
So, curiosity killing the cat and all.......did your hood piercing hurt when you got it done? (Is there a 'nosy' smiley???) :)

StarMama
05-19-2004, 03:37 PM
Do you use gold in other piercings with better results? Usually if you have problems with metal going to gold from surgical steel isn't a good idea. I'm allergic to anything in my piercings except surgical steel or titanium. I've tried gold too, and nope doesn't work. So I wouldn't spend the $ unless you know that gold works for your piercings (like do you wear gold earrings or something).

I'm not sure of other signs of rejection except when it starts moving and you can see the "trail" its moving start behind it yk? Its exactly what my belly button did. If it starts doing that, take it out! I left mine in until it was barely hanging on and now the scar isn't pretty at all :(

Oh and as far as your curiosity, I'll give you more than you asked for :firedevil :) Yes it hurt, but 99% of the pain was because my Dh did it and didn't use anything to lubricate the needle through the piercing. :O I didn't get it done professionally because 1)I was shy about showing off my privates and 2)The local shop that did piercings at that time said I couldn't because I'm overweight via a phone call. No checking me out, nothing. A$$holes. So we did a ton of research, and bought all the right equipment and sterlizied as best we could in boiling water and rubbing alchol baths... I know its not the "acceptable" way of getting a piercing done, but it worked out.

*Anyways* I don't think it would have hurt very much at all if I had it done by a pro.

I am still tatooless. I have finally decided what my first one will be - a pickled hottentot. What is a pickled hottentot, you ask. Well they are little creatures that were designed by a friend and I while we should have been paying attention in Calculus.

If I ever find an artist I like and I like my first tattoo experience I will be working on a armsleeve that could easily grow to my shoulder and beyond.

The sleeve will be a celtic knot like cresent moon with grapevines twining though it and off around my arm. I can see pixies, faeries and greenman-esque faces peeking out of the vines at some point.

In the mean time I am looking for some small chunky silver or steel hoops to wear in my 9 ear piercings. Repiercing my eyebrow, toungue and lip are being considered as well.

Hey girlies,
I just went last night to my tattoo artist to get something done last minute and he didn't have time (was starting a 1.5 hour job and my mom wanted to be done babysitting my midnight...) So I repierced my navel. Woo hoo! I haven't had a pretty navel ring since prebaby. I have a (not sure what is is called actually!!! Like a slightly curved barbell, open in front?) With a pretty iridescent green crystal in center.

Unfortunately, my skin isn't as pretty as b4 and it seems a tad saggy to me, but whatever, I have another piercing!

Now I will have to figure a way to get the kids some fake ones.... Every time I do anything, Addie esp, wants one too. THe looks I get with a three year old with a crystal glued to her nostril and fake tatts.....

:birthday: Happy Birthday, Addie! :balloons

My kids draw/paint tattoos on themselves all the time. My mom almost passed out when my almost-4 year old said, "Our tattoo artist, Barry, ..." It was hysterical! Barry drew a "mom heart" tattoo w/ Zachary's name on it on his cast when he broke his arm....the doc had to cut the cast off, avoiding the "tattoo" so we could keep it!

I have a 16 year old friend...I babysat her brother and herself from when they were born until they were old enough to stay home by themselves ... who really wants to get a tattoo, but her mother won't let her. Her mother did say, however, that when she's old enough that I have to go with her! :twothumbs I can't wait! (This young lady has been at two of my children's births ... she saw a 9.5 lb baby born naturally and a 8+ lb baby born naturally in the water w/ midwife in attendence. She can't wait until I get pg again to attend a homebirth!)

i guess i get to join you guys because i just got my first tattoo about a month ago. it is a triple goddess symbol (full moon w/ a crescent on each side) on my upper right arm. right now it is just a black outline as i'm taking my time to decide how i want to fill it in. i want to put something special in the full moon (possibly a celtic symbol or a flower), and probably fill the crescents in black.

unfortunately i'm a little unhappy with the job. the lines, especially on one of the crescents are thicker in some places than others. i guess i can have it done over again. but for such a simple design i think it should be perfect.

so here is a silly question, do you think it is ok to have tattoo work done while pregnant? i just wonder if the feeling of pain (not that it hurt me that much at all) will freak the baby out? there are no real possible harms are there?

as for piercings, just my ears. three in one and two in another. i've contemplated a nose piercing though.

OK, let's see if this works! http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/betsyadair2002/album?.dir=/52a1&.src=ph

It's all puffy and scabby, so just overlook that element! ;) Oh, and the fact that it's not done!

NO. NEVER!

And no reputable tattoo artist would ever work on you knowing that you were pregnant. Realistically speaking, all of those endorphins could throw you into labor or cause a drastic rise in your BP - enough to affect the baby's blood supply.

Just wait... the thrill of a new tat is not worth it.

be well.

I have a question about nose piercing. I've wanted to get one for the last 15 years but there always seemed to be a reason way I couldn't, mainly being "professional" at work. Anyway, now that I work from home I see no reason not to. My husband and DD actually gave me a gift certificate for Mother's Day to get it done. So my question is what can I expect as far as swelling and recovery time? How does it look immediately afterwards? Besides my ears a few times, I've never had anything pierced.

I do have three tattoos. One on my leg, from my knee to my hip. Another on my left side from under my breast to my back. And a very small one on my breast.

Thanks for the help,
Michele

annababy, thanks for the reality check! i hadn't really thought about those things. it makes sense that a tattoo artist wouldn't work on a pregnant woman.

i have a pretty high pain threshhold and my tattoo really didn't hurt all that much. just kind of tingly. so i think i just assumed that doing more work in the same area wouldn't be a big deal. but it makes sense that you definitely wouldn't want to do seriously painful or extensive work while pregnant. i hadn't even thought about the blood pressure issue.

i'll hold off! it will give me more time to think about what might be the perfect filling for my full moon. i sure wish those lines weren't so uneven though. aargh.

thanks!

hadleys mom~I thought getting it done was going to be WAY worse than it actually was. The lady that did it to me thought that was the weirdest thing since I gave birth to three kids :LOL Anyway, whatever side you have pierced, that eye will water (mine didn't too bad cause I had them shut). It didn't hurt anymore than getting your ears pierced; it was real soar afterwards, though. It has been two weeks and it is fully healed.

I can blow my nose fine--that was a concern of mine since I have allergies. Also, for the future, Hot Topic sells acrylic studs that are clear so that it doesn't close up while you are at work.

I am really pleased with it. HTH!!

I have a tribal design with a rose on my ankle, a big Froud fairy on my back, and a spider web above my left breast (I hate that one and either want to get it removed or covered up with something else! It was my first tattoo, what can I say, I was young!).

I also have two holes in both ears, a nose stud, and I usually have a belly ring and one nipple ring but I took them out because I'm pregnant. :love

If you are there, don't freak out too much, it means someone stole your photos and stuck them up there for access, and if you wrote to the owner of the site he'd remove them... I mean yeah it blows if someone stole your photos, but they are very strict about not doing that there, and they'd remove them and take away access from whoever send them in. yes, welcome monikitaut... :love

also, emmama i had both my nipples pierced (removed them years ago) i did them myself when i was a mid teen. they healed great (and i am sensitive skinned and my ears STILL get infected. lol)
and the only problem was snagging on bras while i was at work (cashier when i did them) but now i know about nursing pads and nipple shields and such..so i could avoid that) the pain wasnt bad at all (especially now that i have gotten through nursing a newborn and then a teething toddler :eyesroll )

a buddy of mine in school kept trying to pierce his nipple and it wore out (he did use a fork the first time though) and my dh has a scarred nipple from piercings wearing out....maybe these guys have too thin of nipples and tried to only pierce in that? mine is wider and i pierced the base....hmmm

edited to fix a few errors cuz i am nak'ing and making too many spelling boo-boos

Thanks for the welcomes! :D

On the nipple piercing, it did hurt. It hurt so bad it almost didn't feel like pain, which was really weird. I closed my eyes and all I saw was white. I also had to kind of yell "OH MY GOD", which was new for me because I'm usually really good at handling pain and keeping things in. But it was only for a second, while the needle went through. After that it was sore for a couple of days, but it healed really fast and I've never had any problems with it.

Sorry if this is TMI, but if you have it done, don't let any saliva get on it until it heals whereas I've heard this can cause infection.

Technically I have two tattoos and 5 piercings. I used to have 6, but removed the tongue ring. I am thinking about getting it repierced atsome point. As for the tattoos, my 2nd one covered up my 1st one. The first one was a banner with my son's name in old english on my right bicep. It really looked like I had a man's tat on my arm and people always wanted to know if Adam was my dh or dp. I was always like, no he is my son thanks! So I got it covered up with a Pegasus bust. Beautiful black horse with a wreath of roses around it's neck, and multi colored wings. As soon as I can find a place to put it in the web I will post a link so you all can see it. I have plans for many more tattoos. The next one I get will be on my left bicep to balance out my arms. The Pegasus is quite large. Then Ihave plans to get my childrens names tattooed somewhere, I haven't decided where yet. Maybe I will have someone design a lower back piece that I can add their names too and then add more when I have more. So many ideas, so little money. LOL

I do like the idea of tatooing your children's name...you'd never regret that!
I have one solitary seahorse on my shoulder and even forget about it sometimes until I see it in the mirror from time to time. I remember how I couldn't wait till I turned 18 and saved up the money for it. I've been tempted to get a mermaid on my arm but never had the guts to get another one...I sure love to see beautiful, interesting art work on strangers on the street.

ears pierced 7 times, nose pierced, navel pierced. i want to get my tragus done, but hubby says he doesn't like that, so we'll see.

a medium sized butterfly tattoo on my shoulder, that wasn't very well done, and needs to be retouched. a large black tribal type butterfly on my lower back. i've decided that if i get anymore tattoos, i'm only getting black ink, because i don't like the way the color fades.

Hmmmm...the tattoos I have that have color in them haven't faded much, if any. My newest (January) tattoo has absolutely brilliant colors. Maybe it's the ink the artist is using???

I have 9 tats, 4 that have color in them (dragon, sun, geometrical pattern and tandem nursing mama figure). The tandem nursing mama figure has NO black...it's all color. I have one plain black (frog w/ yin-yang) and four black/grey "stone" tattoos (2 stone angels, a stone unicorn and a gargoyle).

My dh has 6 tattoos with color (one stone) and his color is great, too. Hmmmm...

just found this thread; 11 tats, (3 were re-dos) and 8 holes in my ears, and had a nipple and belly button. 1st tat (at 17) is a seahorse on bikini line, 2nd was a rose vine around my right ankle. 3rd is the truth symbol in Japanese on the outside of the left ankle. 4th is a hawaiian petroglyph paddler with a canoe club name under, 5th is the sun & leo signs merged on the top of my lef foot. 6th, a star and moon on inside of left ankle. 7th, 8th and 9th were a new anklet around the left ankle joining the truth symbol with a cover up of the moon and star with the Big Island and a cover up of the rose vine to match the new anklet - both plumeria flowers with maile vine. 10th was a cover up of the canoe club name with waves under the paddler and the 11th, and possibly the final one, is two hands holding a lily (my daughters name) on my upper back - done on her 1st birthday. WOW, that's all for now...

I havent' had a problem with color fade either. My oldest tat is 20 years old and even the pink still shows although it isn't on a place that gets sun. The only color I've had fade is white and that tat is almost 10 years old and the white was just an accent shade so it doesn't matter.

I got one of my tats while pregnant and had no problems. The only issue I can think of is obviously sterilization. You don't want to get hepatitis or something especially while pregnant. I think some shops might not do it if your obviously pg. In my case it didn't show yet.

Figured I'd jump in, too.

I've 3 tats. The first I got is an owl. He's all blackwork. He is on the upper portion of my left breast. The second is on my left hip. It is a little fairy sitting on a mushroom. He is reading a book with the initials WD on it. The WD stands for Winston's Diary which is my dh's book of poetry. The third is on my right breast and it is a bookworm. He's got on glasses and has a book under his arm.

Each of my tats has a special meaning to me. The only piercings I have are my ears (which to me don't really count). I've got three holes in each lobe. Although, I must admit, I think one set of holes has closed up. :( Oh well!

I have one sad tattoo on the inside of my hip that has been infiltrated by stretch marks from two pregnancies. It was a fiery bat-fairy blackwork thing, but now it is quite unrecognizable. Symbolic of my youthful self overwritten by my mama self, I think! I want to get more tattoos, just waiting for the right ones to drift into my imagination.

I have many ear piercings, a healed eyebrow, a nose ring, and a plan for nipple rings when I am ready to reclaim my breasts from my children.

I like that idea of getting your belly button pierced for 30th b-day--mine is coming up in just over a month and I've often thought about piercing my belly button. I am wondering though...has anybody here lost weight after having it done? I mean, I'm done birthing babies so I could concievably at some point lose some of this weight and I am wondering how the piercing might shift if that were to happen...a good question for my piercer I guess, but if anyone has any experience with that, I'd love to hear about it.
And what is the approximate healing time for the belly button anyway?
Thanks! :D

Ok, I have a sun tattooed on my lower back. And my boring ears pierced.

I would like something in Arabic lettering, maybe my maiden name as I am half Assyrian. I've also been bugging my husband to draw something tribal that has our names hidden in it. I just need to stop thinking about it and start doing it! :)

Oh, I forgot about the dots I have on my hand! In high school my girlfriends and I thought it would be cool if we all had matching tattoos. So know we all have these funky black dots on our hands.

Any piercing can shift, regardless of weight loss/gain/pregnancy/et c .. - it's more common with facial and nipple piercings than any other kind, though. The only thing I can think of with losing weight is that the piercing may "tighten" the skin - if the skin becomes more taut the piercing may migrate to accomodate that. The only real "problem" I've seen with belly buttons is their tendancy to reject over time - I first had mine done in 1993, and after about 7 years (and 6 pregnancies) it "grew out" - pushed itself through the skin and I had to have it redone - but it hasn't moved since then :) Preliminary healing (soreness, redness, et c) will be complete in 3-4 weeks, but as with all body (non-ear) piercings, complete healing takes on average 6-9 months, if there are no problems. (According to the piercer I trained with, anyways, but I think it's a bit of bunk *lol* - I've never had a piercing that's taken longer than 3-5 months to comfortably set itself :) )

I've been a chicken with piercings - 3 earlobe holes and one cartilidge hole (that I was stupid enough to have done in a mall with a gun. I had it done 6 years ago and it still gets irritated when I try to wear an earring in it.)

I also have a small red and yellow seahorse tat on my lower back. I had it done for my 30th b-day and am so glad I did it. I have a feeling more tats will come later. Dh got me addicted!

I am currently unpierced and untattooed. I am planning on getting a tattoo asap. I will have to go out of state though because it is illegal here.
I am thinking I want to get my kids zodiac symbols,(taurus, libra, gemini&capricorn) but I don't know where or in what design. I want them within some sort of circle, protecting them. But I cannot find a circle I like, and I cannot draw what I have in my head b/c I can barely draw a strait line. I was also thinking about maybe an angel holding something with the signs. I thought of that after I saw a clipart of a pixie holding a vine in my print artist book. I don't want a tattoo on my stomach incase I were to get pg again I don't want to end up with a shredded tattoo.
I did have my belly button pierced twice, that was 10 yrs ago in high school.
I did at home, myself, with a piercing earring and a safety pin. Now I have this founky scar where the holes stretched out while I was pg 4 times.
I also have a tiny little fold of skin right at the top of my belly button where the scar is like folded over. It's hard to describe. Anyways, I want to re-pierce it, professionally this time. Does anyone know if they can pierce through a scar? And will it hurt?? I numbed myself with ice at home.
I'm sure I could handle the pain though if I can give birth to an almost 11 lb baby at home.

I had mine pierced last March after it had closed up. The scar tissue was about a year old and it really didn't hurt any more than the first time I had it pierced. It was quick and healed even faster than the first time I had it done :)

YES - scars can be pierced through :) Some people do it with plain old regular surgery scars to "accentuate" them.. I have the same type of folded over stretched out scar from my belly button .. Piercing a scar will hurt a little more and take a little more pressure than through unscarred skin, but it can definitely be done

I have a quick question for you mamas. How long should it take for an eyebrow piercing to heal? I got mine done about 6 weeks ago and it keeps getting infected-not too bad just slightly but it's going back and forth and frustrating me.

thanks!

Infected infected, or just yellow crusties? Yellow crusties are lymph secretions that harden - they're common with most skin piercings - I still get them occasionally from my labret piercing, and my nipple piercings - which have been done 3 months and 3 years respectively.

Initial healing of skin piercings (belly button, nipple, eyebrow - superficial piercings that only go through skin/fat layers) is 6 weeks. Total healing time, depending on if you're a quick or slow healer, can be up to 9 months - it averages 6 months for eyebrows. If you can stand the feeling, rinse it 2x daily with warm water and sea salt or kosher salt - it will clear infections and secretions without damaging the piercing. In a pinch, even saline solution works. Do NOT use antibacterial soaps or bacitracin - they can trap germs, believe it or not. Same for alcohol and peroxide - both will slow healing.

HTH :)

*lol* another gross question - gooey pasty white stuff, or pussy white stuff? The gooey stuff is lymph secretions pre-crusty (Gross, I know lol)

Just make sure you use UN-iodized salt - sea salt, kosher salt and epsom salts also work well

Yay, finally more moms with tattoos. i have six, a house on the back of my leg, the Kali yantra on my lower back, the sanskit syllable krim on my wrist, a woman on each of my upper arms and another woman right on my chest bone (which after a 29 hour labor I can still say was more painful than childbirth, yet for some crazy reason I plan on getting it added to when I wean my daughter).

So what I'm wondering is do any of you have a hard time getting other moms to talk to you? In the summer with six tattoos (oh yeah and a nose piercing) there's no hiding them and the other mothers at the playground outright ignore me. I mean I'll say hi to them and they walk away rather than speak to me. I live in Brooklyn, NY so its not like these people have never seen a woman with tattoos before. Any ideas?

Ha! People RUN from me, I have 15 tatoos, pierced nose, tounge, and hair that is not usually a color that occurs naturally! Kids love me b/c I am colorful, but parents...not so much. I was at a music class with my kids, and we were dancing around at one point and I accidentally bumped this little girl. She fell down, she was fine, didn't cry, and I bent down to talk to her. Well, her mother FLEW from across the room and scooped her daughter away from me. It was so obvious, and rediculous! That has been the worst so far. The only moms that talk to me are MDC moms I meet at the park :LOL
I do find it interesting the people who DO talk to me though. Usually the last people you'd expect. So, sorry, but no advice here. I just think its the other persons loss, as I am a nice person, and so are my kids!

I'd talk to you tofumama!! I get really big mixed reactions (20 hours of tattooing done, most visible in the summertime, nose, tounge, multiple ear piercings). Sometimes really sophisticated women and Grandmas as well as your average looking mommies take time to coo at Orion and talk to me. Sometimes they look at me like I'm the devil. Sometimes they even have conversations with me about my tattoos (usually my quarter sleeve)! I can be really surprised about who is super nice to me and is even really interested in my artwork! But yes being ignored sucks too and it does happen quite a bit...

I have 9 tattoos and my tongue pierced ... and I'm a church secretary. I can hide all my tats with short sleeves and long pants/skirt. I've been working at the church for 3.5 years now and only a few days ago did one of the church ladies notice my tattoos (I'm on vacation and dropped in to pick up my paycheck in shorts!)... she was shocked! She couldn't believe that a "nice girl like [me]" could have tattoos! I just smiled.

It amazes me how many people are shocked that I have tattoos...when people meet me in the fall/winter, they don't know until spring/summer that I have tattoos and often say that it surprises them! It's funny when I make a friend during cold weather and shock them come spring!

I know several other mamas with tattoos...but I must say I have the most!

My daughter is especially drawn to people with tattoos/piercings ... we were taking a walk and a guy with multiple facial piercings, full sleeves, as well as tats on his legs ... and dreads! ... walked by and my daughter smiled at him and turned to follow him. She just turned 2! I had to run after her, which attracted the attention of the guy ... he smiled at my daughter, she made eyes at him and tried to strike up a conversation with him. He was flattered that my daughter was so enamored with him ... and very surprised that she wasn't scared of him. I told my dh and he laughed .... this is the same girl who decided she wanted to be a skater at 20 months of age (she uses a xylophone w/ wheels as a skateboard!).

I haven't had a chance to read all bazillion pages of this thread :D but here I am...

I don't really consider myself pierced though. I had my tragus done last week. I'm getting a vertical tragus next month. I'm trying to wait 6 weeks in between what I want done to give it a chance to get initial healing over with. So, I have 2 normal cartiledge piercings and the tragus.

My lobes are gaged to a 14 and I'm planning on taking them to no larger than a 10. I make the next step to 12 tomorrow.

My dh got his nips done last week :love I can't wait till I can play with them :wink

I have a vertical tragus and a rook piercing planned. Then I think I'm done with my ears. I don't want too much done to them. Then after bfing I'm getting my nips done. Then after I lose weight I'm getting my bellybutton done.

I have 3 tats planned (1 on my c/b scars, 1 on my foot, and 1 on my left breast) but I have to come up with the money. Hopefulyl I'll have the first one in a few months.

I had a couple ?? about my tragus. I'm not sure if anyone here has said they have one though.... Its been about 10 days. The first 5 days i had no pain. Friday I road dh's motorcycle for about 2 hours and since then I'm sore and slightly swollen. I remember from my cartiledge piercings that cartiledge eeked out for awhile. I had my tragus done with a needle but does it heal similar to the normal cart piercings??

Hey!

I can't read through all of this, so please forgive me if this has already been discussed.

sometimes my tattoos get itchy and bumpy, it's very weird and I haven't figured out a common theme of when and why yet. But it seems to only happen on the black work I have, it's like there's these raised lines under the ink that itch and feel warm to the touch.

I want to get lots and lots of more work done, but it occurs to me that maybe I should find out more about this before I do cause i wouldn't want to experience this all over my body :eek

anyone ever experience this or hear about it?

weebitty2
07-09-2004, 05:15 PM
sadie_sabot : every once in a while i notice the same thing with my tattoos - especially in the blackwork .. although mine will either itch OR swell - rarely both at the same time. Were they done with tattoo ink or regular india ink? DHs were done with regular india ink and he gets the itchies a lot - a little lotion or a rub with cornstarch usually makes the itches go away.
How often does it happen? Only after certain foods/medications/ointments? It COULD be a reaction between the ink and your body's chemical make-up at any given time .. I've noticed mine really only itch if either a.) the dogs drool on me, b.) if I take certain supplements, and c. ) if i eat/drink anything with artificial sweeteners ..

I haven't got the time to do a lookup myself right now, but check out the body modification ezine http://www.bmezine.com/ and do a quick search ?

weebitty2, thanks for the quick response!

I suspect that there must be something I'm allergic or sensitive to, but I haven't yet figured out what. I *think* that if I do a lot of yard work I get itchy (our yard is very rough so lots and lots of different plants out there). I need to pay attention more when it happens so I can try to make a link.

I dunno what kind of ink...but I presume it's tattoo ink as they are studio tattoos. I will do a search on that ezine and see what I can find!

thanks!

Wow, 25 pages!

Regarding the itching and swelling, you must remember that the ink is a foriegn object under your skin. Your body is constantly trying to break it up and rid itself of it, hence the reactions. Same with piercings, most will eventually work/push their way out. My tongue piercing migrated about 1.5 cm before it got too uncomfortable and I had to take it out. I got my navel done at 15, and it pushed itself almost out within 6 months. (Which is pretty rare btw, dont worry!)

I think that is it. Here is a pic of my new piercing, I had to invade the boys growthspurts pafe :) I have 2 upper carts done but you can only see one. The lobe is at a 14 gage but as of tomorrow will be at 12. I thought of gaging the cart but I'm nervous about it.

The tragus wasn't painful at all. It is a little sore now but its healing. I actually kinda liked the pain... is that weird??

I cna't wait to get MORE done!!

Please consider slowing down on your progress in stretching. Your skin needs at LEAST one month to heal and regain its elasticity before you stretch again. While it may not be THAT painful now, if you continue, you will find yourself with scarring and unable to stretch anymore.

Just my opinion here, though I was advised by many professionals. I have reached 7/16" in my ears, and at one point had a 00g in my tongue, so I have more than BTDT. I always waited at minimum one month, and as I got larger, it was often more than 2 months.

be well.

DH just recently had his forearm inked with the initials of our church in Old English lettering - LWRC, Living Water Revival Center. My bass player was inspired and had his 4th and 5th tats done on his forearms. One side says Living and the other says Water in really cool blue writing that looks like flowing water. There's all kinds of inked and pierced folks at our place :D

I have 3 tats with one planned for the near future, 2 cartilage piercings and 5 ear piercings, nose, tounge and I'm getting my labret done this week.

I was glad to read about stretching here because I really want to stretch my ear holes but wasn't sure of how to go about it.Advice anyone? I don't want to go too big just up a little...

A tattoo under a ring would be subject to a lot of friction/rubbing/movement. I am guessing that it would be totally rubbed out within a few years. Hand tattoos peroid only last a few years before they become blurry as heck, one under a ring would go twice as fast.

Here is a pic of a blurred out tattoo http://www.badtattoos.com/Tattoo_Galleries/Bad_Tattoo/tattoo_2107.html

Its like you tlk to someone and their like..sure its great! Then another person is like... not really.

As for the stretching I was told to wait 2 weeks in between. I was going to wait more like a month but they said 2 weeks is fine. I'm def taking my time with these rings though. I was going to try and do it fairly fast but I think I'm going to take it nice and slow. The rings actually look like talons and they look fine how they are now. I'm not moving them for quite awhile! (Thanks fr the advice on that too.)

I stretch and find if I go a little slower (3-4 weeks in between) that my ears recover better and then there is less of a risk of tearing (NEVER good). I think if I am not pregnant this month I am going to go and get tattoo #6. I want the tree of life on my right calf. Does anyone have their calves done? I hear it can be quite painful (so far my chest piece was the most painful).
