hay all,
has anyone here thought about stretching their nipple peircings? i use to imagine being an old lady with saggy boobs as well as saggy nipples. thought they'd compliment each other. lol.
also, has anyone experianced energy pulls? (hooks in the back)
i was fortunate to experiance it with a chill group in eugene but haven't met anyone into it since.
much love!

Stink... I had a question in mind...
I only got my tragus done and I think I have the next 4 things planned. Now I just need to funds and the healing time :D I want one thing to heal (initially) before doing the next thing. Like I want a vertical tragus but I'm waiting for the "normal" one to heal first.
Where do you find designs for your tats?? I have some ideas but don't know where to look.
How do you find a good tatoo artist? Do you just ask around or what?

Well, I'm getting in late on this thread, but couldn't resist.....
I have one tattoo. It started out as just this tribal armband thing that I picked off some flash art when I was 22 or so... but the guy really butchered it. It looked ok until you got up close. So fast forward several years and I decide to get it fixed. Found a great artist and he incorporated this huge multi-colored lotus with flames coming out of it and whispy smoke rising from the center. It ROCKS!
Oh and a nipple piercing.
When people find out about that them they can't believe that I'm also a high school teacher. :D
Be blessed y'all,

Megan and Kristie ... Love it! I somehow can't picture many of the congregation (mostly VERY conservative) with tats, nevermind the pastors! The youth pastor is cool, but not a tatoo / piercing kind of person! I don't mind listening to Five Iron Frenzy while I work, though!
And yes, as soon as I get a tattoo, I'm ready for the next and immediately start planning. I try not to allow myself to think too far in advanced, because I rarely get to get a tattoo as it is! It seems that every time I plan to get work done, I get pregnant! :eyesroll

Amanda... Ya like that huh? :wink yeah lot's of people are either pleasantly surprised that we are so normal (in our opinion) OR they are totally blown away and think we're all going to hell :LOL Our church alone keeps the ink studios in business. There are a few pictures on our site of us but you can't really see any of our work, they're a little old too.But you can get the basic idea of how different we are...the site makes us look mild believe me!
www.LivingWaterRevivalCenter.org If you click on schedule I'm the one singing with the black shirt that says " You laugh because I'm different, I laugh because you're all the same" Also if you click on our vision there is an older picture of me with part of my band. We really look conservative here :eyesroll
Does anyone have cool breastfeeding tats? Pictures? I designed one that I want my artist to spruce up for me. I'd be interested to see any work you all have like that...or birth and mommy stuff :D

I've got around 11 or 12 hours in so far. I brought in the drawing of the flower in the center near my neck - it was in the inside lining of a book that I had read. The rest has just been sketched out and done by my friend who is the artist. :thumb
be well.

Hi there Aimee!! :wave
I've had piercings done at both Flats and Tiki Tatoos. For piercings I prefer Tiki...a much better experience. For Tatoos I've been researching for a while myself. I have decided that I like Dawn at Flats.I haven't had one done by her yet but I've sat and watched her plenty while my DH had work done,She is an AMAZING artist and very cool too. I think you'd like her.
Flats is the best place around here for tatoos, the only issue I have with it is I feel like a some of the other people who work there are extremely rude, which doesn't make for a very comfortable environment. But if you can ignore that than you're good to go. I say check out Dawn, she's really awesome!

Hey, I have a question for you mamas. I've decided that my next tattoo is going to be large and (of course) very meaningful. I want to incorporate different things that are important to me. Anyway...the question is...how does one come up with the design for something like that? Do you work with the tattoo artist, tell them what you want and they draw it up or do you find someone to draw it up and then take it to the artist? I suck at putting what I see in my head into words, so I know I'd be a total PITA for anyone to work with. Any tips? TIA. :)

I've always worked with my artists to come up with something. All my work is original and much of it free-hand (though you have to REALLY trust your artist for that).
I'll usually bring some ideas or pictures or color swatches or sketches to help get the ball rolling. I've been pleasantly surprised by the people I've worked with! You can usually call and set up a one hour consultation appt. for this. I've never been charged for that, but I wouldn't expect that to be the norm--and I would definitely factor that time into my tipping.
Hope that helps!

I have a dear friend who is a tattoo artist. He only does custom work--meaning you bring him a picture and he works on a design that will work with the size and placement.
He's working on a dragon for my arm. I brought him several pictures, described what I wanted, and he sketched something. I asked him to add some things, take some things out, etc. We're just getting to the coloring part now. He suggested some colors, showed me what he could mix, and off we go. I haven't had any work on it in almost a year, and won't until after this baby is born. I'm bummin'! But it gives me time to save up more money so he can finish it and start to work on the next piece....

I drew three of my tattoos myself. I worked with my tattoo artist on a couple of them, and one of them I had him draw for me. He drew it while I went out to get him coffee! I think I'll be drawing the rest of my tattoos, but if I ever decide to get a back piece done, I'll definitely ask my tat artist to help me!
How did I find my tattoo artist? I went back to a tattoo place I had been to before, and the artist that had done one of my pieces wasn't there and Barry was available, so I talked with him. He was really nice, sincerely interested in making sure I got exactly what I wanted, and we just clicked. It turned out to be one of the best things I ever did! I love his work, I love the way he treats his clients, and his little girl is the cutest!!! (I got my last tat done in his basement while my kids played with his daughter!)

Here's a question that I know what the response would be in Normalville, but I wonder what the Tattoo and Pierced mamas think....
My dd wants to get her ears pierced a second time. She had them pierced the first time about 2.5/3 years ago. She's been asking for about a month off and on, not pestering relentlessly but definitely wants it. Dh says he doesn't see anything wrong with it. My hesitation is this: she'll be 7 next weekend.
hmmm...my initial thought was sure, why not? I have a total of 12 piercings, some cartilage, in my ears and I wear silver loops in all of them, so it does not surprise me that she would want more. It just surprised me that she wants more now (my almost 10 y.o. dd has no interest than any more than the first.)
So, I'm just not sure. She seems so little, ya know? I don't have any issue with it other than her age. Any thoughts/experience?
Oh, I think I was 10 when I got my second set and had 9 by the time I was 14.
Indigo73
07-16-2004, 08:11 AM
I got my second holes in my ears at 7. My aunt did'em for my b-day. I pestered my folks for weeks until they let me.
I got my second hole when I was 11. I wanted three hole (2 in one 1 in the other) so my mother had a friend do it with a needle.

Hey everyone :) I can not remember if I have posted to here yet, so here I go.
I have six piercings in my right ear, four in my left. The first holes are stretched to a 4 and I want to get up to 0. I used to have more in my ears (14 and 10) but they have come and gone over the years.
I also have my nose done and my belly button (which rightnow looks like a skin to skin on my 7 month preggo body lol)
I have four tattoos on my back. I large lotus that I got done after dd was born, an eye of Horus that was my first one and will be covered up soon. A custom tribal piece that goes around the eye and then down my spine, and a flash tribal piece that I want to have customized soon.
I have plans for another piece to be done on my back after the baby is born and I would like one on my right arm/shoulder. I would also like to get my labret done.
I love the work that you ladies have shown...really really beautiful :love

I have found that you get what you pay for, and tattooing offered at a bargain rarly is one after you have to go have it covered up, touched up, or removed alltogether. Something you ought to pay the extra $$ for. If I wasn't getting work from my friend, I'd be paying about $100 an hour, and frankly would be concerned if I was charged anything less than $75 an hour, unless it was for something really huge. My friend charges me @ $75/hour, and I'm happy to pay it.
To find someone you like, visit as many tattoo shops as you can. Look at their portfolios--and not just the drawings. Look at work they've completed on people. How clean is their shop? Their workspace? Do they use new needles on every client? Do you feel comfortable with them touching you? HTH!
annababy
07-16-2004, 05:03 PM
For a point of reference on what people charge - the guy that did my work charges between $125-150 per hour... and sometimes higher than that for especially small pieces. That back piece has taken around 11-12 hours. I'll let you do the math there. :)
Just keep in mind that the ARTWORK is permanent... and you always get what you pay for.
be well.

Yup around here about $100 an hour, with a minimum of anywhere from $50+. I did get a deal on my big celestial piece, which should have been $120/hour x 10 hours. I was originally quoted the piece would take 3 hours (yeah RIGHT) from the owner (not a tattoo artist himself) and that it would be $360. I told him I thought his estimate of time was way off, and could he guarentee me that price regardless (which usually they won't do at all. Its by the hour pricing, period). Well he *really* liked the design, and wanted the publicity for his shop, and said they give price breaks on large pieces, so yes he would honor the price regardless of how long it took. I was leery, I *know* you get what you pay for, so I REALLY questioned their practices, hygiene, portfolios, talked to the artists, ect.
So I did get a really super deal out of mine. :D

Hey guys, I have a quick question.
I haven't posted in this thread before, I'm Tori. I no longer have my navel piercing but I am an avid admirer of tats and piercings. I've been itching more lately for a tat but am thinking of settling for an eyebrow piercing instead cuz I'm such a baby when it comes to pain.
Anyway, my question. I was thinking about this the other night. I had my ears pierced as a baby and I was thinking if I have a baby girl I'd want to get her ears pierced. But then I thought, "Is that any different than circumcision or other mutilation to children that they didn't consent to?" I never thought of that before. I'm curious what you think...

i was wondering where you had your childrens ears peirced? did they use a needle or a gun? i hear the guns arent really the right thing to use. do you go to a tattoo/peircing place?
Yeah I really don't want my children to have their ears pierced with guns because 1)You CAN'T sanitize those things, 2)It causes *so* much trauma shoving a mostly blunt earring though the skin and 3) Standard earrings are so NOT designed for healing a piercing with! All of my ear piercings were done with guns before I knew any different, and wow the difference with other piercings! My ear piercings *HURT* after they were pierced (of course hurt when getting them done too, but that's a big *duh* :LOL), they throbbed and were bright red and poked me in the back of my head, were difficult to clean, got infected SO easy! My other piercings were tender and sore afterwards of course, but nothing like my poor ears.
When any of my children are old enough to choose to get their ears pierced and able to deal with the pain of getting them done as well as cleaning, if I can't find a piercing shop that I find reputable to do the piercing, I'm thinking of buying a new piercing gun so the sterile thing isn't an issue (but I don't know, are those things even sterile coming out of the packaging new?). And thinking getting decent jewlery to put in too, but I don't think a just pierced kid is gonna sit still while you tug and pull to get that stinking piercing stud off, so I'm not sure about that one... I'm just hoping I *will* be able to find a reputible shop who will do the piercing for them... Still have awhile to figure that out :D
prophetmother there are a few *heated* threads about this on MDC you might want to search for. :) I wouldn't get my children's ears pierced without them wanting it, because its their body, and then should get to decide what to do with it. I don't see it in *exactly* the same light as circ'ing (circ'ing does SO much damage to the body and I'm darn sure is MUCH more painful than an ear piercing), but the roots for why I wouldn't do either are the same. Just my opinion, I know a lot of MDC mama's see it as the same thing as circ'ing and I respect why they think that as well. And I do think Orion would look totally adorable with a pierced ear too, so I'm not just saying I wouldn't do it because I have a boy...

Hi ladies, may I join you?
I have 3 tats, none of which I am proud of :LOL I dated a *tatoo artist* but actually he was a *tattoo artist in training* an apprentice, so I got 3 free tattoos, but at the price of them being pretty crappy. I geuss I don't HATE the two that are on my back, but I really am not impressed with the one around my belly button, and when people say *Oh that is cool* I generally roll my eyes!
I have 3 piercings in my ears, I want to get the bottom repierced on my right, and then I want to stretch the bottom holes. I saw these awesome bone earings, that twisty (not sure how to describe them) but they start out real skinny, then end up being pretty fat at the end. I'm dieing to get them! I also just recently (about a week ago) got my nose pierced and I am totally loving it.
Interesting about using the gun for piercing or needle. I did notice too that all my piercings done with a needle were way less painful. I used to have my belly button pierced and I had my lip pierced as well. The lip I could not get to heal up for me, and just hurt so bad every time I smiled so I took it out.
My DD wants to get her ears pierced, she is almost 5. I'm not comfortable with it yet. While I think the pain isn't that tremendous, I really think it would be alot worse for a little child, so I would like her to wait. I would never pierce my baby's ears, no way, no how!
I look forward to getting to know you all!

yeah, about the stretching. Someone hear said wait 2 months inbetween sizes or more. I should have listened to you and not the piercer. I stretch from a normal post to a 14. 2 weeks later I bought rings that went to a 10 but were gradual. So, my plan was to go to the 12 and wait and then finally to the 10. I slipped nd went straight to a 10. My right ear is fine but my left ear split a little. So, I bought some normal 12's and put them in and the left ear is healing.
So, I'm staying at a 12 indefinetely!! I'll try for a 10 in about 6 months if I'm feeling brave. I do NOT want another split again!!

INteresting question about whether piercing babies is like circ, etc....never actually looked at it from that perspective, but kinda like Lisa said, I wouldn't pierce a baby for much the same reasons. My girls both have their ears pierced now--they asked to have them done and I waited to make sure they really wanted them and were ready to clean/let me help them clean them, etc. They are both happy to have them done; one wants more and the other is satisfied with the one set. My son has mentioned that he wants his ear(s) pierced butI don't really feel like he is ready or like he really wants it. I think he's asked because he's noticed his sisters' and wants what they've got. :D If and/or when he really wants them and is ready and able to take care of a piercing, then it's his choice.

Sorry you had to find out the hard way. Keep the 12s in for a few weeks (6-8) and I always applied some GSE (grapefruit seed extract). Even though I waited a very long time between stretches, I still managed to have a couple of small splits at larger gauges. The GSE helps with any infection.
be well.

:hippieI feel the same way about piercings. When my kids asked and understood what was involved, then I let them. My son had his ear done at age 7 and has always liked it.
As for facial piercings, they'll have to wait until they're older for several reasons. 1) they aren't finished growing 2) a scare can remain perminently 3) Some piercings have a higher rate of infection. I want them to do what feels right for their body, but I also don't want them to be sorry one day and wonder why I didn't help protect them.

sorry, i havent kept up with this thread, but wanted to chime in on the childrens piercing topic. i have posted about this before, but we pierced our dd's ears at 6 months and really regret it. she is 21 months now....ears healed fine and she never had much trouble with fussing with them, but we really feel it wasnt our place to do it. its too bad we realized this after the piercer already did them. we didnt talk about it till we got back in the car...and bickered about it for awhile (who's idea it was, etc) we decided any future children wont be pierced until puberty as a right of passage thing, if they decide they want it.
we tried to let them close, when she was a year, left them empty for a few months....but then my inlaws went to mexico and got her the prettiest lil amber earings...so dh put them in (he has an unhealthy attachment to his parents ;) :LOL)
we went to a medical piercer, no other professional piercer (like at a body or tattoo shop) would do a child, and the mall gun wasnt even an option :eyesroll

I have a question for some of the more seasoned piercers.... I just recently had my nose pierced. I'm sure most of you know what the stud looks like that they pierce you with, they essentially bend a long stud into a curved shape. Well the end of this curved shape is poking the inside of my nose and is not very comfortable. I've tried to move it to either side, and twist it a bit so it points further back into my nose, but I have not had success (kinda hard to move something inside your nose!!!). Any advice? Head back to the shop and see if they can reposition it for me? I'd prefer to just do it myself cause I really don't know when I'll have the chance to get back in there, and they don't allow kids so that even lowers the chance more. TIA!

I can't answer any of those questions...but I'm interested in hearing the answer.
A friend had her tragus done for about 3 months and it was still as sore as when she had it done. She took hers out and the pain went away.
My dh switched from his hoops to barbells. I can't believe he has been pierced that long! I'm still loving my tragus. I can't wait till I have the extra dough to do my vertical!!

Wemoon, I have one of those studs as well in my nose, and mine is "wiggly" enough to move around... but I did have them shape it for my (well healed) nose and they snipped off the end (and smoothed it) so it didn't irritate me. I do have to be careful not to knock it out though, so I gained comfort, but its a bit not secure...
Anyways, if you have the type of stud that I assume you have (I've also had the cheap bendy kind, if you have that kind you could re-bend it yourself) then you're really gonna need to go in the shop to have them fix it for ya... unfortunate but true :( I suppose you could take the jewlery out (but if you can't even readjust it, I don't know how easy that is gonna be) and take wire snippers to the end to cut off a little bit, but then you've got a SHARP point on it, so you'd have to figure someting out to smooth it...
Shyly, you had to take the jewlery out because of pregnancy? Or they weren't healing well? My hole is still open, but I don't wear jewlery in it since Orion is breastfeeding... however, I had no problems with it during pregnancy... it was very well healed then when I did get pregnant.

The webbing! No way! My best friend had that done. She LOVES it. She found for her the best jewelry for it was a bent barbell, she's SO happy with it.

okay, this may be a silly question, but why can one not get tattooed while nursing? Is there are risk of disease?
Also, are there any nursing tattooes out there? I would love to get some when my boys wean, but that is a long time off.

IOF they look so great! My Tragus is really large and thick. I wonder if that's why it was so horrible? The piercer had trouble getting it through.
I just went up one more size in my ears I am now at a 0g. I am going up to 00 and I think that is where I will stay (for awhile at least ;) )

No, it was way way healed. I got the piercings over three years ago. They just started to HURT when my breasts started to grow. I couldn't even touch them. I wound up taking them out because they hurt so badly. There wasn't any seepage or anything like that and the holes are still there. They just hurt soooo bad. I can't understand why.
Maybe try some different jewlery? Like cbrs or something? That'd be my only guess, to give them more room as you grow... my breasts went from C to DD during my pregnancy, but it didn't irritate my piercing at all... it kinds sucks to not be able to wear it now, but well breastfeeding the baby is the priority so I deal...
bente, yes there is a risk of disease if everything isn't sterile, you are having an open wound made, after all. Some moms won't get work done while nursing for this reason, but its a personal choice. I had my latest piece done (10 hours) while nursing... I was just extra careful to make sure the shop I picked was clean!

It wasn't healing at all for my friend until she switched the jewelry a couple times in attempts to find something more comfortable. First was a straight barbell, and that didn't work, then a ring, got caught on everything. Then a curved barbell, but it was too long. Finally she found a shorter curved barbell and now its FINALLY healing. I have next to no loose skin there so I can't imagine getting it done.

I think I've come close to deciding on my first tatoo. I'm going to get a trinity or an infinity symbol with Benjamin, Bryce, Tracy in a circle around it. I want to incorporate 2 little pair of angel wings.
I'm not sure where I'm getting it either.
I want a small one on my foot but not sure what that'll be either...
The 3rd one I want will be kind of a vine of sweetpea blossoms. I want buds for the babes we lost and blooms for the boys. the Sweetpea means: The Sweetpea is a departure flower, and is meant to suggest parting in good graces with little sorrow, possibly because of a quick return. This is a flower of innocents, chastity, and honesty.

I think it would be so neat to be a tattoo artist!! Heck I think it would just be cool to be able to tattoo friends and family! I'm an artist as well, so it really appeals to me. However, I wouldn't want to make anyone my guinea pig! :eek I told Dh about how cool that would be and he said "You'd just be one big tattoo then!!" I said "Na, I can't reach most of my body!" LOL!

What is a keloid and how do you know if you have one?
I have this small bump behind my tragus piercing. Its been there for about 2 weeks. its a little sore but not much. It doesn't seem to get in the way either. I'm not sure if its a zit or what it is. I don't want to take this piercing out.
Another question?? Are certain ppl prone to keloids?
Raven

What is a keloid and how do you know if you have one?
Keloids are overgrowths of fibrous tissue or scars that can occur after an injury to the skin. These heavy scars are also called cheloid or hypertrophic scars. In individuals prone to keloids, even minor traumas to the skin, such as ear piercing, can cause keloids.
Another question?? Are certain ppl prone to keloids?
Keloids occur most frequently in individuals of African-American descent and in those with darker skin. Other risk factors include a family history of keloids, surgery, acne, burns, ear piercing, vaccinations, or even insect bites. In addition, women and young people under the age of 30 are more prone to develop them.

Thanks everyone for the compliments! (Hi Jacque!!) Megan, WOW! I swear *no one* gets that its Orion! :LOL I dunno if most people just don't know about the constilation (were they sleeping through school? :scratch) or what...
Socks! Hee Hee! :rotflmao I *love* the idea!! I eventually want to get a little fairy scene around my ankle (that already has the fairy dragon on it) of a fairy holding onto a flower with grass around her, dragonflies, butterflies, ect... I've always liked the idea of a toe ring, but dunno, I don't want it to get all yicky and toes don't take so good to tattooing... maybe a plain one, in just one color or something so if it did get fuzzy you wouldn't be able to tell as well...
Keloids SUCK! I've got a BIG one on the back of my ear from a cartilidge piercing done by a gun when I was 16. I really need to see if Kaiser will cover removing it, it itches and is ugly and drives me bonkers!
My arms feel uneven now, with the big Orion quarter sleeve on one arm and just an armband on the other (eyptian hyrogliphs of my DH's name... sorry I know I spelled that ALL wrong)... I'm pondering what I could put above the armband that would be sorta egyptian-ish to "match"... I'm thinking of maybe a night time sky, with the moon and stars and then you could see the pyramids under it in stark shadows.... My Dh is going a bit nuts though, he says my Orion piece is "One big a$$ tattoo" :LOL

Oh and no $$ here for any of my wanted tat ideas either, so I feel ya!!

Mine took a couple months to heal. I actually had it re-done because the first time it wouldn't heal. Found out I was just messing with it too much for it to heal the first time around. But now its great. I actually used a melaleuca mouth wash (it has tea tree oil in it) and it healed up SO NICE! Also, you can buy sea salt in the grocery store (comes in the regular table salt containers) and mix it with warm water. That does the job too.. Probably cheaper than anything else you could do. :D

So what did it look like? Mine is a little raised on the inside sort of like a small bubble. The outside is finally starting to look much better. That looked all red and swollen around the piercing site with a whitish ring. I mean , it wasn't that bad but it has been enough for me to wonder if it's healing right.
I have my toungue, ears and cartilage pierced but my only other facila piercing is my nose and those all healed quite differently.

I started with a 14. I know that when you get them pierced new in most places (with needle) they start you at a 14.
I found out that my tragus looks normal on the back. The little piece of skin I can feel is normal. I'm hoping it goes soon. It doesn't really bother me unless my ear itches. Then it gets in the way.

If you mean what size to start them on after they have been pierced with a gun, I had to get surgical steel cbrs for my poor ears since I was SO allergic to anything standard earring were made from... anyways, the lower holes, pierced at that point for oh 10+ years, were 18 guage. The upper holes, pierced for oh 5 years or so, 20 gauge.
Not sure if that's what you were asking or not though...

I can't believe I just found this thread. I feel so at home.
I have 2 tattoos, an oak tree branch as an arm band and a flying butterfly across one half of my back, butt to just below my shoulder and around my rib cage. It's a work in progress.
I'm getting new ink on Sunday. A friend asked her artist to work on a bunch of us at her house. I want to do a piece that starts at my ankle and goes down over the top of my foot. An Asian style apple blossom branch in bloom. I'm a bit concerned about getting a tattoo on my foot. i've heard such mixed things. I did just read through all 30 pages of this thread and noticed quite a few foot pieces. What do you all think?
Oh, no piercings anymore, but I'd love to do my nose one of these days.

I was thinking a small black and red one but dh mentioned a bigger one where half of the symbol goes around my ankle and the rest of the symbol is on the top of my foot. Sharpies work great. A little olive oil will take it off - or it'll fade off in the shower. It is nice to 'try it on for size'.

I've been hanging around MDC for a few weeks now and I'm happy to have come across this thread.
I currently have 4 tattoos. I have Brian Frouds green woman on the lower half of my back (centerpiece for a full backpiece), 72 name for Umbilical cord on the back of my neck, a blue rose on my chest (matches my moms), and an orchid on my stomach that needs to be covered that is my major ouch spot. I've already made arrangements for my next 2 tat's and to work on my back as soon as I've delivered. I will also hopefully be traveling to Chicago to have a pin-up done sometime this winter.
As far as piercings go DP is a professional piercer so they come and go :) I currently have my ears done and my second holes are gauged to a 6g on their way to 4g. I am planning on letting him reopen my tongue after baby comes and he wants to do 6-8 surface to surface piercings on my back in the shape of a heart if I let him do this it will preceed our wedding as a right of passage. I also did have my navel done but I let that close just isnt' for me.
so that's my longwinded description glad to be here though :)
I have a question does anyone know of other cool places for baby clothes other than dookiewear and luckylildevil?

So my dilema.... In the next 2 weeks I am either going to get my first tatoo or my vertical tragus. I'm not sure which one I want more or which one I'm willing to wait the longest for.
We are busy preparing for our move and I've got a lot of time to think about what I want. I'm just antsy and don't want to make a bad decision on the tat. I think I might go for the smaller one instead of the larger one dh was talking about.
Ackkkk!! DECISIONS!!

Tattoo tattoo!! That's my vote :D Oh and I think the smaller infinity symbol would look better. The around the ankle one *sounds* neat, but the visual I have of it just I dunno, seems unbalanced to me for some reason... Maybe if you want an anklet, have it be made up of little bitty infinity symbols? Maybe linked together? Maybe not, that might obliterate the message... but anyways, since I've got the tattoo bug (and my big old armpiece isn't even 3 months old yet totally finished!! Eeek! :eek) I vote tattoo!!

I got my first tattoo last summer. I got my nickname "Miss Kitty" on my lower back. The letters look a bit like cat claws made them and the dots on the "i's" are green cat eyes. One bb piercing, and 2 in each ear. I'm seriously contemplating getting pierced downstairs. Anyone have this done that would care to comment? Guess I'm going through my second stage on being a teenager, only now I can't shock my parents, just MIL!!!!!! :jaw
You're gonna show your MIL a downstairs piercing? :jaw
No seriously, I getcha.... and *my* MIL *HAS* seen my downstairs piercing!! (during birth) I have my hood pierced. Dh actually did it for me, we ordered everything online to do it and whille we couldn't autoclave it, we did boiling it for 20 minutes, then in alchol, back and forth, about 2 times each of the needle and jewlery (which I had previously had from a different piercing, so it was sterile before I used it for that previous piercing, so therefore, I didn't think I was gonna give myself any cooties).
Anywho it was a *sharp* pain, but I think it was worse because Dh didn't want to hurt me, therefore moved too slow. I'm sure if you went to a pro piercer it wouldn't be too bad at all. It healed SO quickly! I had no problems wearing jeans the same day, didn't walk funny or anything.
I usually forget I still have it! :LOL It doesn't really "do" much as far as sexually though...
IMF, good to go for the piercing until you *know* what design you want for your tat!!

My dh wants me to get a downstairs piercing... I'm not too sure. But eventually I'm going to run out of places to pierce!
I didn't get my vert done. We didn't have time. I should get to go tomorrow.

I would just to see the look on her face and to hear her tell my dh she knew I was trash! Anyhow, is it one of those things that initially heightens sensation, but then it just dies?
StarMama
07-31-2004, 07:04 AM
Yes it does heighten sensitivity for a bit and then dies down. However, for me, just like my nipple piercing (hole is still there, no jewlery 'cuz breastfeeding) it was *too* much sensitivity! My downstairs "parts" are a bit, urm, extra sensitive (trying to keep this MDC pg13!!) and I can't even stand direct contact... the jewlery didn't help much with that...

Oh and man my visible tattoos have already let my MIL know I'm "trash"! :LOL But family is important to her so she says I'm stuck ;) with her! (she said it jokingly... and has seemed to deal with my tattoos since the light of her life, Orion, is pretty much attached by the hip or boobie to me! ) So its "Be a good Grandma. or no Orion-snack for you!" (Uh, Scooby Doo'ing there if that wasn't clear :nut )

Hi there. :wave This thread seems interesting. I'm a pierced/tattooed mama, I actually got my last tat (a star on the back of my neck) the week we concieved Rowan, my son who was born in May! :love I didn't know I was pg at the time. :innocent
I have 10 tats, mostly small/medium ones, and I plan on a new one on my 30th birthday, but I may get one before that on Rowan's 1st birthday.
I have very few piercings left, sadly...I took out my two nipple ones when I was pg because one of them never healed right and the other, well, I figured I just didn't want to deal while I was bf'ing, even though I know I could have taken them out and put them back in, etc...and those first couple weeks when it hurt like hel* to nurse, I'm kinda glad I didn't have them in! :LOL
My bellybutton one is gone too. :( No facial ones since I had to get a "normal" job a few years ago. I'm not sure if I am into any new piercings, but tats are always on my mind.
My ears are pierced many times, and I found out that my labia piercing was still there! I took it out in anticipation of birth but first of all, I ended up having a c-section, and then I left it out for weeks, but last week I tried putting it back in and well! It was still there! :D
DH has ONE tat (yin/yang that matches mine) and one nipple piercing, but he loves his decorated wife. ;)
I love looking at all the artwork here, and reading about moms like me! :D Thanks for this thread.

Wow, I feel old because I didn't even know you could pierce your ear that way! :LOL
It looks *intense* and gorgeous! :D
I think about what piercings I'd want to do again, or what new ones I'd want...my ears would definitely be the place I would choose to do again...but I still feel like the intensity of my c-section is too recent (May 26) for me to go and do anything quite yet. I'm still recovering from that "modification". :innocent
This thread is really making me think of what I want to do sometime, it's been too long.
Anyway, lovely stuff! :)

I have a few minutes now.
I've also stretched to a 10 gage. I think I'm going to go as big as a 6. I want tunnels and I'm not too sure how they look before that.
My new piercing: He put the clamps on and those things KILL!!! Then in went the needle. No pain there. The jewlery, still no pain. The clamps were still KILLING though! The clamps come off. The pain is gone. It didn't even do that post piercing burn! I can't believe how much I love this piercing! He said it was only the third in company history (I think they have 8 locations) He was proud of his work too. :)
Now, what do I pierce next... I think my left ear is done. I want to do one more on my right ear...maybe 2... This piercing is addictive!!!

Anyone's dh or bf have a PA?? My dh is interested but we have questions from someone with experience and I don't think they would be "appropraite" for such a setting :shrug
So, if ya can, pm me....
btw... my new piercing is still pain free!!! It is healing nicely! I'm ready for something else. We decided that if we get the house packed by thursday that I can get another this week (since my new one didn't hurt and doesn't hurt!!)
My dh doesn't have a PA but a friend of mine does so ask away...he had some interesting comments about ah, practical things.
We haven't embarked on the tattoos yet, though we both know where we want to begin. I have been pierced since I started on my own ears at 17. Had my tongue done twelve years ago, also nipples and clit hood. Did my own bellybutton, was that ever a mistake! :) Well, not really, it was interesting and I have never minded doing them myself. It did not work, though, not at all. What a mess. I was so sad when Gauntlet in nyc closed. I could hardly believe it. I had all my important piercings done there. Now we wait until we are in nyc and go to Andromeda.
My dh got a genital piercing a few years ago. That's his only piercing!
For all this my daughter, ten, doesn't even want her ears pierced, though she loves looking at the new work on our heavily tatooed friends. I keep telling her she can have her ears done whenever she likes, but...
In the Modern Primitives book the interview with Genesis P Orridge has some comments about PA and practicality, too.
When I worked at a Waldorf school I didn't wear my tongue pierce to work (voluntarily, no one ever asked me to take it out), but when one of the kids found out from some out-of-school source and told her folks it became a *huge* deal. I am so embarrassed I even put up with all the nonsense that ensued. I pretty much made up my mind then I was quitting at the end of the year though I didn't tell anyone for months. But to deal with that stupidity in this day and age? No way.
I saw a survey recently, something to do with a nursing school around here. Asking patients how they'd feel to be attended in hospital by a pierced or tattooed person! They were trying to figure out how to amend-or not- their dress code for nursing students. What balderdash.

Hey guys, I'm new to the tribe, not sure if I'm gonna stick around yet (lol, I can't hold a candle to half of you mommas!).
I have my ears pierced (I know, I know, that doesn't count :eyesroll )
I had my left eyebrow pierced (did that myself), had to take it out for nursing school clinicals tho I might repierce after I get hired :mischief
I have my son's name (DeVante) on my upper right arm, got that one as soon as I turned 18, about 3 years ago...that one is the standard tat color, script type style, not filled in yet cuz I wanted to wait till DS was old enough to pick the color himself, and so far he's undecisive.
Just tonight I got my 2nd tattoo on my right hip bone (it was funny because as much as it stung, it tickled 10 times as much!). It's a hollow heart that kinda turns into a K. It's kinda hard to decribe. The right side of the heart is an electric blue, fades to "periwinkle" then purple-ish, then magenta on the left side of the heart, then the "legs" of the K are hot pink....Inside the heart it's got a small (dime sized?) Chinese character for "Spirit". (mostly for my spirit baby and also my grandfather) I'm going to try and take a picture, but I'm not sure how yet.
I'm just REALLY happy that I finally got it done :love I've been waiting years for this, telling myself "as soon as I lose weight, as soon as I lose weight.." and now tonight I said F it-Why wait? And so I finally smoothed out the rough edges (I drew it up myself, minus the character, which is amazing, cuz I'm the least artistic person on earth). it probably coulda been a lot "better", but I wanted to say that I did it by myself.
In a few days, I'm doing either doing streaks or the bottom 3-4 inches of my hair bright pink. What do you all think-which would look better/be easier to do (it'll be me and my sis doing it with dye from Hot Topic-can't afford any pros!) Any suggestions??
I would get more done (I'd like my nose, eyebrow again, belly when I'm done having kids), but as a student nurse, it's either look the way the hospital says or don't go at all. As far as the tats go, I'd like a few more, (zodiac signs, other kids names when I have em...) when I get the chance to draw them up and have the $$ to get them....ooh this thing stings...don'tcha just love the way it "hurts so good"?
Okay, well, so ends my incredibly long intro! :innocent Thanks for listening (I just showed my new one to my mom and she says "I don't know why you'd do this to yourself...I can't even tell what this is!" :eyesroll At least my little sister thought it was cool).
Buh bye,
Kelly
PS-I LOVE looking at all your tattoos....they are all so amazing. :D

I dyed my hair hot pink last week!! Now it is very short and black with red hints in it. I'd say that the bottom (not streaks) would be easiest unless you have done the streaks before and are good at it. Otherwise you might end up trying the streaks and "fixing" it with the full color :)
I'm trying to get a pic of my new hair to post. My parents come in nexty week to help us move and she is gonna flip out!
CMM-- I hear ya on the "I'll wait till I"m thin" attitude. That was mine in getting my hair cut. But I did it anyway!! I was tired of waiting till I thought I looked perfect!
Ya know why I cut it... to show off my new ears!!! No one can see my vert surface with my hair covering it up!!!

Regarding PA... I told dh that standing to pee was a past thing and he said "forget it!" So, now that idea is out. We went last monday and he had his ear lobes done. He said he wouldn't get them one because of his dad :shrug But he had them done and said his dad will deal with it.
Ravin-- Did you get that tragus done??
I'm going tomorrow to get 2 conch piercings to make almot a mirror image of my vertical tragus. It will be the last of my ear piercings. I'm till stretching my lobes but no new holes.

hey all, i'm new here and have come with questions for you! warning: no modesty here....
we're toying with the idea of TTC again in the next few months. i've also been considering getting some "downtown" piercings, such as a clit hood and a christina (a surface piercing just over the pubic bone). anyone know anyone who has given birth with these piercings? i wanna know if they'll get in the way, or are likely to tear during birth. i'd hate to spend money and time getting pierced and healing up, only to have to take them out again in a few months time. any thoughts?
currently i have my earlobes pierced, the cartilidge in my upper left ear (rook?), my left eyebrow, right nostril. i had my lip pierced a couple of years ago but took it out after a couple of months, it wasn't healing fully and still hurt when eating, plus it seemed to be migrating a little. no tattoos yet, but after i'm done with birthing and bf, then i probably will get one (or more!).
my dh recently got one nipple pierced - we both love it and he will likely get the other done soon too. he's thinking about a genital piercing known as a frenum - that may be an alternative to a PA for a guy who doesn't want to give up the abililty to pee standing up.

Hey, quick question...I know this has been asked and answered but I'm not sure how far back....my sister wants to get her nipples pierced but she is concerned about how long it will be before she can wear a bra after. She can't stand to not wear one and will absolutely NOT under any circumstances step foot out her front door without one on(even just to get something from the car--seriously :eyesroll ).
TIA! :D

irismoon, I gave birth with a hood piercing. Didn't get in the way at all :D Course I didn't tear, just a tiny internal skid mark (exactly HOW I manage to not tear when he went from seeing a quarter sized amount of head while pushing to being completely born in two puking heaves, I have NO idea, but am eternally grateful regardless!)
13moons I wore a bra the same day I got the piercing. Didn't bug me. Bumping into things (and OMG your boobs bump into a LOT of things!) hurt... another suggestion might be cutting out the nipple part of a bra to wear too...

Anyone ever had a snug piercing??
I got mine done last week. It was by far the most painful thing I've ever felt. I'd ratehr recover from a c-section again! Anyway, it is really really sore. I'm sure some of it is bruising from the piercing adn its swollen too. Any idea how long it will stay that way?
I'm using H2Ocean, and salt soaks. Any other suggestions??
I'm using aspirin on my keloid (from my first tragus) and it is kinda working but its also a pain in the butt!!
I'm thinking of taking GSE and putting it on the snug. Think thats ok?? I also have some amoxicillin. I'm afriad of infection and I don't want to take it out. HELP!!!
irismoon
08-15-2004, 10:57 PM
have you tried cleaning with tea tree oil soap? that's what my fave piercing studio recommends for cleaning, along with sea salt soaks for piercings done with a barbell. i've never gone wrong with that. you could also take an anti-inflammatory, like ibuprofen, for the pain and swelling if you like.
i'm not sure what GSE refers to?
also, i just checked a good piercing site with aftercare info, and it said that snug piercings can take 2 months - 1 year to heal fully. hang in there!
good luck! i hope you get through without infection!

I'm doing MUCH better now! The swelling is going down and so is the redness. I'm able to touch it now too...which makes cleaning easier :wink
I figure it'll take awhile to heal. My vert surface was healed in what seemed like 5 days. It is doing great. I have a huge keloid on my first tragus. The aspirin paste isn't doing much. BUt the weird thing is that it seems to drain almost every night. It gets all wet and goopy. By morning it is almost gone but by evening is big again. It is too weird!!
I'm hoping to have pics of my new snug soon :D
StarMama
08-16-2004, 11:36 PM
Weird Megan! I wouldn't know it was a keloid if its draining?? I've got a big yucky keloid (like the size of my pinky from the last knuckle to fingertip) on the back of my ear (from a gunned cart. piercing when I was 16) and its hard, like cartilidge... I really need to see if my insurance will cover removing it, it drives me batty! My last insurance didn't cover anything and I ended up having to pay 150$+ for a dr appt where the guy said "oh that happens when you're healing and your body doesn't know when to stop with the white blood cells. You should remove all your other piercings so that doesn't happen again" (Oh, all my HEALED piercings? The ones that no more white blood cells would be being made by my body to heal them?? ).

[QUOTE=StarMama]Weird Megan! I wouldn't know it was a keloid if its draining?? QUOTE]
Then what is it?? Dh says it looks like a zit but that wouldn't make sense. It drains but a zit wouldn't come back again like this.
We think if it is a keloid it was fromt he piercing ring. The ring they put in was bent from torking to get in and the bend rubbed my ear.
Tonight we pricked it and drained it and tried an aspirin paste. I'mjsut sure what to do. I don't want to take out the piercing. I like it too much so I'm trying different things to get it gone!
Maybe I should stop by and ask a piercer to look at it. We moved 12 hours from our piercer and have to find a new one :(
Anyone know of a good piercer in the Cincinnati area??

Megan, I went to bmezine.com and looked up some things... Here's their linky for keloids (http://encyc.bmezine.com/?cmd=search&query=keloid), and here's a link for Hypertrophic Scarring (http://encyc.bmezine.com/?Hypertrophic_Scarring), which sounds perhaps more along what you might have, being that they are 'popable'. One more link for a boil (http://encyc.bmezine.com/?boil), but you didn't say it hurt, so I dunno if it could be that. The link for hypertrophic scarring has a couple "home remedies" (camomile tea, and tea tree oil), so maybe those might work? Or changing jewlery? I bet if you look at those pages and narrow down what you think you have you can google up some more home treatment plans :D
Oh yeah! And when I was a lot younger I had a big popable bump on my nose piercing (I've had it 10 years now, the piercing, not the bump! God I feel old now!!), and that was from being allergic to the jewlery I had in (cheap-o stuff). Maybe you're allergic?? My other piercings didn't react to cheap jewlery until 5+ years later, it was just my nose, so that's why I mention it, maybe only that *one* piercing is freaking out for some reason... I had to switch everything to surgical steel or titanium... I'm sure you probably have surgical steel in it now, but maybe try titanium? Or a plastic-y type jewlery (if they sell those for your piercing... I have them for my tounge piercing...)
HTH!
My stupid yicky keloid ain't going nowhere without seeing a doctor. And honestly, I'm scared of getting lydocaine in my ear!! :scared That stuff *burns*! Yes, yes, I'm scared when I have like 20 hours of tattoo work done and have had 14 piercings! LOL!

Oh and to respond to the other posts:
Yup totally addicted!!! I'm 26, and like I said in the other post have 20 hours of work done... I can hide it all (the tattoos, not the piercings, but a nose piercing now isn't looked at too oddly), but I am SO wanting more work!! I'm working on an idea for stars on my chest, yk one on one side, one on the other.... But I don't want them to be plain colored, so I'm fooling around with ideas for either having the night time sky inside them, or fairies... sorta leaning on the sky idea, because fairies would have to be awfully small to fit inside! But I'm constantly coming up with more ideas, since I have to save for awhile to get any work done...
Moria's Mommy, I SO get you on the weird looks!! Its summertime here so I LIVE in my tank tops (and they are awesome for breastfeeding too, just pull the top down and latch ds on! I HATE showing my tummy when I nurse! LOL!), which means all but 2 of my tats show, and I do have a fair amount of visible piercings (8xears, nose, tounge) and my GOODNESS do I get stared down!! And *then* I sling Orion on my back in my asian-silk kozy and wow oh wow, its double the fun! And on *top* of all that, I'm out and about with my girlfriend a lot (and yes I mean girlfriend, not friend that is a girl :LOL) and she is so loving and involved with Orion I'm sure people look at us and assume we're both the "mom" if yk what I mean ;)
But its all (mostly) fun, because I'm friendly, and Orion is SUCH a charmer (smiles, laughs, plays the shy game with people) we get approached a lot, and I think its really positive to show that a tattooed mom can still be a good, loving parent. I'm just a normal person who happens to like making my body artsy and original... Which I'm sure all of us can say, and its just nice to show that to others. And the ones who just give me evil looks? Well :p to them!

Yup, I had my left nipple pierced, & can still nurse ok :) No jewlery in *while* nursing though, when ds was a newborn he'd take it w/ the jewlery, but it HURT then, so I took it out and now just periodically put it back in to keep the hole open. Ds refuses to latch with the jewlery in now when I tried....

Just made an appointment a couple days ago for my first work in a few years, but it's not till the 27th. I guess my tattoo person is getting too popular, that's a cancellation and otherwise it would have been September 5th. :o She is really good though, at this point I wouldn't consider going to someone else. I would rather wait. She's the fourth person I've gone to and as long as we are in the same geographical area she'll be the last.
Starmama, I just want to say I love your Orion tattoo! That is really nice, well-conceived and well done. Your little guy is pretty darn cute too. Nice, nice picture! I also have a constellation (Big Dipper - the Alaska connnection, I didn't find out until right after I got it about the Tao connection as well), but it ended up being just the stars themselves on blank skin. Yours is so much nicer, I may have to change that. Yet, it's on the inside of my forearm which I found to be extremely painful, so I don't know if I'll be doing it anytime soon. :)
ETA, when I was "before kids" the name Orion was right at the top of my list for one of my future little ones. I love it. My kids all pretty much "came with" their own names so I never did use it, but for years I thought I would.

Yet, it's on the inside of my forearm which I found to be extremely painful,
I fint it totally interesting, the different pain tolerances and areas on different people when I tattoo.
For example, my inner forearm was no prob. Didnt even hurt. I felt a bit of numb buzzing, but absolutely no pain!
Also, I actually saw man crying when he was getting his inner bicep done, but my brother didnt even flinch, he was like "its no big deal."
My calf, again no problem but my uncle swears it was a killer.
My shoulder hurt like a %%$#%, but a guy I tattooed took it very well...
Some people have problems with fleshy areas, some have problems with boney areas...
I think the only common trend I am seing is that the middle to upper back, and then outwards to the ribs is bad for everyone.
Just an observation!

Really? I've never had anything done on my back except the back of my shoulder, but I'm just about to start on my upper back (center more or less) and then have plans for this piece to extend down to the middle of my back. Hopefully it won't be too painful, I wasn't thinking it would be. I'll know more after I get started - in 9 days. :)

Used to be able to call and schedule for the next day, but that's a while ago I guess. I'll try to post a picture eventually. Might be some time before it's really done at this rate.

Queenie, thanks for the compliment! On the tattoo and Orion :D I just :love his name! And its funny, I'm the star/night sky nut, and it was Dh who came up with the name! If we ever have a girl, I've got Aurora picked out :D More sky stuff!
And oh my with the appointments! I can't *stand* the anticipation/nervousness of appointments! Course, with my big Orion piece (4 sittings) I had to make appointments, but I dunno after the 1st session I wasn't nervous. It was like the last tattooing session was so recent, I remembered and didn't freak. Now piercings, that's another story! OMG my heart ends up IN my throat before those!
Yeah Andrea, painful spots for me are bony areas. But they have to be *really* bony. My shoulder blades were not a problem. But my Orion piece, right where you have that little "ball" at the top front of your shoulder, OMG :scared OW! And my lower back piece hurt quite a bit too. Other than that, everything was just about the same. Even inside my arms for my armband, and where the Orion constilation sorta strays in that direction. But what SUCKS for under the arm (or close to it) for me is it gets SO swollen and bruised. And its not the artist, the guy who did the Orion piece actually has a very light hand, and I bruised and bruised! He *so* wanted me to get the inside done to make it a full 1/4 sleeve and I told him I needed to forget how much the healing hurt first! And to not have to *lay* on my arm to sleep to nurse Orion (yes, 4 sessions, 10 hours, and I SLEPT on that arm. :eek). Oh and now he's gone to Mexico for 1-2 years, so I have to find another artist... maybe the other guy in the shop, need to see his work and stuff of course :) But the constilation is tatt'ed on there to make room for another big swirl in the front (to avoid making the whole underside blue! :eek I told him if I ever get it done, he needs to design it so that it has a *lot* of the negative non-tattooed space! :LOL)
I'm afraid I may have to wait way longer than I wanted to get my next piece done... $$ issues... :( I was saving up my "fun" money, Dh and I both get a set amount per month, but now we have to cut that from the budget for a bit, to get things straightened out... *sigh* Well at least it give me time to get it from my head to paper and not rush, and I can at least get estimates!
Andrea, I'm gonna PM you, cuz I am SO SO SO interested in how you got started doing tattoos and I wanna bug ya with questions :D

I was talking to my mom.... we are living together so I can't help it :wink... and she was sayuing she wants a tat but won't get one if dad doesn't. Well, he says no. So, I told her that she can't freak when I get mine!
I sound like such a little kid but you'd have to our family to understand.... my fil is going to freak at dh's ear piercings...
Anyway, I'm upping my 10 gage to an 8 tonight. If it hurts too bad I'm going to stop. I had been thinking of using plugs and teflon tape to stretch. So, I might go that route.
What I have is hypertrophic scarring. It isn't a keloid. So, now I"m off to try a new type of treatment and hopefully it'll be gone soon!
I said I was done with my ears but I'm thinking about something else... but what... vertical lobe.... maybe...

One large tattoo of a darner dragonfly with an eye in each wing on my back. belly piercing (done twice) I let close with pregnancy #2. Have idea for a tattoo of astrological glyphs of my clan after I deliver. Would love an eyebrow ring, too wimpy to wear it to work. Although, I work nights and all my patients are sedated, probably wouldnt notice. Im still toeing that mainstream line.

The nasty thing on the back of my ear is almost gone! I just started applying pressure once or twice a day to get the ick out and it would drain and bleed. I went to do it yesterday and when I took the tissue out of my ear there was a HUGE scab...ick.. but now its gone and nothing left to drain!
I'm sooo glad it wasn't a keloid. Those things have got to be painful!!!

Hmmm, then maybe I'll get it done. Dh was looking at maybe a jacob's ladder.
Silly question...if both partners have a genital piercing... do they get in the way?
So, my il's saw dh and I for the first time since we started our piercings and such. They weren't shocked or anything... nothing we do is a shock to them. Then my SIL shows me her mouth... she had her tongue pierced. Then in confidence my MIL says that she wants to get her bellybutton done. She asked if I thought she was too old and I said, "NEVER!" So, she may be getting one soon!! I think its awesome!

Scan down to the bottom and click on the picks :)
Now... if you see my ear with the "normal" tragus... i'm thinking of doing the following... I'm going to replace the CBR with a barbell. Then I'm going to get my lobe right up next to my head and an equal distance above get pierced with another barbell. I want it to look like a line of piercings... does that make sense?? The other ear Im going to get a modified industrial. I want it to me closer together on the top of my helix. I'll prbably have to have an earring bent to fit but I want a U shape hanging down and the 2 balls on the top of my helix. Again, you jsut have to picture it.
I'm taking this whole ear piercing thing more seriously than I thought I would. Its like I've realized that even though they are "just" ear piercings that they are a form of art. I want them to look amazing!

Where do you learn to do piercing?? I saw last night that there are tat schools but what about the rest of it? I have some AWESOME ideas for piercings that I've never seen done and some ideas of AWESOME jewelry that I've never seen. Hi everyone.
I have one piercing (belly button) and no tats. I am getting ready to get my first though.
I'm still in the process of choosing what I want to get done, probably a cool, intricate wildflower on my left shoulder blade.
A couple questions, how long does it take to heal and approx. how much should I expect to pay for a med. size flower with a little color?
TIA!

Im guessing between $150 and $250. It really depends on the artist, the placement, the size and the amount of detail and color.
Different people take different times to heal. Its all individual. Some people are totally healed in 1 week, others (like me) take up to 4 weeks to be totally healed.
Be prepared to forego the long showers and tub soaks for at least a week, and to avoid the pool and tanning for at least a month. These are minimums by the way.
Best thing to do is have a talk with your artist before you get the tattoo.

Hey all :wave
I've been lurking for some time now but I'll post! I have 3 sets of holes in my ears (just plain 'ol lobes, I am so not gonna go there with cartilage! LOL!) and a silver stud just below the center of my lower lip. Originally it was pierced with a ring that went around the lip, but I like the stud much better. I want to replace the ball on it with a larger one so it's more noticeable.
Anyway, I've got a growing urge to get inked. I'm thinking something in the middle of my lower back, symmetrical, simple, black ink. I'd like to design it myself because that way I a) won't have to pay for someone's drawing time and b) will know my tat is unique. I'm comfortable with the drawing/designing part, but can anybody suggest a good source of images for inspiration (not to rip off, just as a jumping point)? I know what I *don't* want: celtic knotwork, asian characters, fairies, animals, astrological symbols. I'm thinking maybe twining leaves or another botanical theme? Or a stylized sun or some scrollwork?
Second question: If I walk in to a tattoo place (once I've picked it out) with my design already drawn & sized how I want it, about how much can I expect to pay for a 2" black-only tat?
I :love all the mamas with art & jewelry! Vive la difference!

I apologize for popping in without reading through the thread first, to see if my question has been answered before. I've been contemplating a tattoo for a few years now, and finally last year, at the age of 32, decided that I'm going to go for it! Problem was, I turned up pregnant with my 6th babe before I could do anything about it. Well, baby is here now (almost 4 mos. old :love ), and I want my tattoo!!! I have a couple of questions, though, and none of my non-nursing friends have a clue.
Does anyone know what, if any, are the dangers of getting a tattoo while breastfeeding? Is the ink dangerous at all, what is the risk of contracting a communicable disease, etc.?
Also, this being my first, I'm really curious about the pain factor. I'm either going to get it on the back of my shoulder, or the small of my back. Care to share which ones hurt the worst, or the least? I'm not terribly worried about the pain, after having birthed six babies, but I'd like to know what to be prepared for.
TIA!! You mamas ROCK!!! :thumb :bow

Tattooing (http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/mom-activities.html#Tattoos)
I have a tattoo to the side of the small of my back and that one HURT! Shoulder blades, not too bad :)
Here is a link to tons and tons of tattoo photos for inspiration:
BME tattoos (http://www.bmezine.com/tattoo/bme-tatt.html) I like going because I can get ideas, and then make my own original versions. Like I got inspiration for the negative stars on my Orion quarter sleeve from there...
Oh, I did have a question! When I went with SIL to get her ears pierced (YEAH! I found a clean shop that will pierce lobes with needles for any age, so when my kid and future kiddos get old enough to want ear piercings, if they want them, I've got a place to go! Woo!) I was asking about getting my tragus done and they said to not sleep on it for 3 months!! Really?! I didn't get it done because I still nurse Orion at night (he wakes about every 2 hours) and can't stay off any side...

Did he say why? I was careful for one night. Then it was no problem. With the second tragus I was sleeping on it that night. My snug has been more challenging but I have found ways to make it work.

No, it was the counter girl and she didn't elaborate. It was one of those cookie cutter shops on telegraph in berkeley, so I assume it might have something to do with just giving out exagerated healing instructions...
I just am having the piercing itch, and its either tragus or labret, and since Dh hates the labret, it would sure be an easier one to get! LOL! I really do want to get my cartilidge pierced again, however, I need to get rid of this *&^%ing keloid first!
Oh yeah, which reminds me, just curious, did those links I posted for you help you figure out it wasn't a keloid? Any of the treatments help or anything?

I'd say it wa exagerated! It was a hypostrophic scar. Its gone now :) To be honest... I jsut would apply pressure and couple times and day and it was bleed and puss. Then the next day it would scab over and I'd do the same. I think it was broken down cartiledge that was trying to get out. So, I was just helping it along :D
I think what caused it was the huge kink in the CBR I was pierced with. I don't think it had anything to do with me sleeping on it. I would think it is just common sense. If it hurts don't sleep on it! You can find ways to lay so that it doesn't get bumped.
We went to Kings Island today... monster theme park with several world record holding roller coasters... and I was really careful. But on my fave ride "the Vortex" I smashed my snug! I wanted to cry... actually I did...
Get it pierced!!!!! Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it :thumb
I love mine! I'm going to put a barbell in it though cause I've got an idea for something else. (Everyone needs a tragus piercing!) I like the labret but dh asked me to not get one... so I think I'll either not get it or wait a bit to see if he warms up to it. If he doesn't thats ok I don't HAVE to have it done.

Just got a message from my tattoo artist, she had called to maybe cancel a week or so ago b/c of a house closing, but it got postponed (which must be the norm - haven't heard of too many that weren't!) and we're on for tomorrow evening. She only has an hour though, so it's just a beginning. I hope we at least get the sun done. Maybe the person following me won't show up.

My lil sis wants her ears gauged. But she has had them pierced 2 times in supposedly the same hole. She had an accident at age 5 and the EMT took out her earrings and she wouldn't let anyone touch them to put them back in. So, she had to have them redone. So, dh goes to slide in the new ring (the first of the process) and they won't go in beause her holes are all screwy! So, we figure she'll jst have to go and get them started with a needle.
We saw someone out that we liked the look of their work and he gave us the name of a piercing studio tha he says is the best around. We are going to drive by tomorrow and see what we think of their work and their shop.
Do most piercers have an available portfolio??
And do piercers in different regions have different styles?? I've noticed that the piercings we have just look a little more polished than the ones we;ve seen here. I cna't really describe the difference but there is one. Weird...

Sooo my birthday gift to DH was ...
Getting him pierced! :balloons
He had both earlobes done. He started thinking about doing it about a year & a half ago when I got my lip pierced, but this was the first occasion on which we could scrape together the money.
Anyway, he's got 12ga rings in and they look verrah nice :love :heartbeat He's probably going to ... what d'you call it? ... gauge up eventually to the jewelry that started him thinking about getting pierced in the first place (neo-primitive, claw-shaped steel semihoops that don't come any smaller than an 8). I think it'll look ubersexy.
He was a piercing virgin, too. It was neat to be the "experienced" one for once :LOL For any nervous spouses who might be readong this, he says the first ear was nothin' and the other one was next to nothin'. He did get pretty white, but I think that's because he went to get pierced on an empty stomach :eyesroll

Megan,
A good piercer should definately have a portfolio. And a varied one at that. I'm not sure about "styles" varying by region but I'd say it probably has to do more with training and licensing standards. If the work doesn't look up to par don't settle just because it seems to be the norm for the area. Keep looking, I'm sure there is someone around there that has more training and experience than everyone else.
My DP is a piercer and he was trained by an RN with a 4yr apprenticeship. He has way more training than what is required around here but if you look at his portfolio compared to a lot of the others around here everything looks MUCH neater. Hope that was a bit of helpful information.

Why are you mammas who are piercers by me?!?!?!? Any of you travelling to CIncinnati, or close, anytime soon?? Or do you know of anyone? weebitty is getting alist together for e but I'm impatient!! I think I have a tat guy. He did dh's best friends anime tat. its really cool and detailed. I'm going to check and see if he does piercing work too.

So I'm madly scribbling away on my tat design ... a sprig of 3 leaves in outline with some grayscale-type shading ... something's not right, though :irked: Maybe I'll start some different ones & see where they go. Right now I'm looking at botanical sketches for inspiration.
I'm itching to have something done too! Not the tat, because a) I don't have it drawn yet, b) I want it to be a special event, yanno, my first ink and all and c) as if we could afford it :LOL But I find myself thinking a bunch about new piercings. Yeah, right, as if we could afford one of those either :eyesroll
I will live vicariously through all of YOU. :D

Thanks for the URLs to tats online; I've found several that look just like what I had in mind. Now I just have to figure out whether I'll draw it up myself (not a great artist), or if I ought to just print up a photo of someone else's work. ??

Does anyone know what, if any, are the dangers of getting a tattoo while breastfeeding? Is the ink dangerous at all, what is the risk of contracting a communicable disease, etc.?
Also, this being my first, I'm really curious about the pain factor.
I've just been reading up on this abit. I think when bf and pg you produce more collagen so the chances of developing scar tissue are greater. People of Asian or African decent are more prone to developing keloids and have on occasion developed them from tatoos. Pain factor? My ex got a tattoo on his shoulder blade and said it was quite painful b/c on the shoulder you are in closer proximity to the bone so it's more sensitive. The same would go for tattoos by your ankle bone or collarbone or close to your spine.

I have had my navel peirced now for about three months. About a month after the puncture points got really raised and since I was told it was normal left it alone. I was also told that I should not take it out b/c infection has nowhere to go and chances of scarring were better. Now I know it's either hypertrophic scarring or keloid scarring and I have done alot of research on the internet about scars resulting from peircings. I got the navel ring as an incentive to lose some weight. Before I would say I was too fat and that I couldn't get something like that so I went out of my comfort zone and did something that I really wanted deep down. Now I find out that if you are carrying abit of extra weight you should not get a navel peircing as everytime you bend over it gets bumped. I am also bf and dd has kicked my peircing several times. Due to the bumping it got infected. The other thing I learned was that the ring should be uniform and non-abrasive. The place where the clasp and hinge are are very rough and I think that irritated. I got it done by my SIL who needed a model for her peircing course. I think their jewellry is very cheap. When the keloid developed it looked like the inside of the peircing was being pulled outside of the raised part. It would not close up so I picked it off and it closed up a few days later (eew, I know!). Have any of you mamas had success treating keloided peircings? I hear it's not very probable. To date I use a salt water bath, just in a coffee cup. Recently I have been brewing either chamomile or melaleuca tea in the bath and soak it for 5-10 min a day. When I wash it I use TTO soap, then follow with TTO for the infection. It re-infects so easily. Then I use either olive oil or evening primrose oil capsules which contain vitamin E and rub it on about three times per day. I am avoiding turning the jewelry too much, only when I wash the peircing. I have been extra-dosing on the evening primrose oil for the vitamin E content and also taking lots of grapeseed extract internally. I am going to have it looked at today to see if I need to change the jewellry. I have heard of hypertrophic scars taking up to two years to heal. How do I know if it's healing or if I should be taking the peircing out? I am really worried about this and I really don't want a scarred bellybutton for the rest of my life so if anyone has advice I would welcome it.

The place where the clasp and hinge are are very rough and I think that irritated.
I think that this may be your problem. Go to a reputable piercing place and purchase a surgical steel or titanium piece. Curved barbells are usually the bast for navel piercings, depending on how it was done. Jewlery for piercings should not have hinges, clasps, or any other sharp or rough edges.
While you are there ask for advice on how to heal youself, you may need to use something other than salt water for a while.
The piece that you have in now is probably just ripping the inside of the hole, and if it is a cheap metal alloy, then you could be reacting to one of the metals in the ring, in which case you will never heal, and end up with really bad scarring.
Then I use either olive oil or evening primrose oil capsules which contain vitamin E and rub it on about three times per day.
As far as I know, vit. E should only be used once, maybe twice a week. And that amount of oil on a would may be preventing it from healing further, as no air can get to it and it cant breathe.
Hope you heal soon!

Ok. if it is a keloid try using an apirin paste on it. Put it on and let it crust and flake off on its own. I have friend who had great success.
I've learned recently that if it drains and is squishy it is hypertrhic scarring. I recently had a raised scar on my ear the size of a pencil eraser. If would push on it so it would drain. It hurt a lot and bled a lot but its gone now!!
If you SIL is taking peircing classes ask her for help. It'll be good practice for her. Not to mention that you should NEVER get pierced with cheap jewelry. If you aren't sure of its quality then ask. I wouldn't use anything that was't surgical steel quality (I can't remember the numbers).
But, your SIL should be able to help you out.

Holy cr@p!
The ball from my lip barbell went down the bathroom drain!

DH had to take the trap off the sink to rescue it (yes, *he* had to, because I was holding the barbell in place). I cleaned it up and now I have to put it back on. I HATE screwing those teeny tiny threads.

I had my tongue pierced about 11 years ago and loved it. I was sad to take the barbell out, but I had bad luck with it. I wore a 12g barbell in it for 9 years. In that time, I swallowed 2 barbell balls. The first time I happened to get drunk that evening and dry heaved it the next day. Sorry if tmi.
The second time I never saw it again.
I cracked the same tooth in two different places from chomping down on it. Just had a crown put on the tooth, 2 years after I took the darn thing out. (without insurance the crown would have cost $800!!!) I switched to acryllic balls, and cracked two of those before finally giving up.
I had equally bad luck with my septum piercing (lasted 4 months), nostril (:crying I loved it the best. Lasted 3 years. Too many infections), and navel (6 years, and got a nasty infection 6 years after I took it out.)
As much as liked the piercing, I'll stick to tattoos. I don't think they liked me as much as I liked them. :innocent :innocent
My body seems to take tattooing better than piercing.................. not that I mind because I would like to be decorated from head to toe someday.

I think my piercings are doing well. My "normal" tragus has been the bigest headache though. I refuse to take it out becaus it is soemthing I can deal with, annoying though.
I hope I tat well! I'm really excited to get my first. I hace narrowed it down to a couple artists I want to talk to just by looking at their work. My dh's friend has some awesome, very detailed work.
Any of you design tats?? I have some ideas but I need help with the drawing of them. I know what I want but I know I'm going to have to have them designed. I'm willing to pay for the design help... I don't have a lot though, but I'd still pay. PM me if you have experience and are willing to help a fellow MDC'er out!

Haven't checked in for quite a while, because I haven't done anything fun (well, a few months ago I repeirced my navel, but nothing exciting...)
So last night I got a tat on my inner wrist. It is an infinity knot with a little diamond underneath. My best friend of 14 years is going to get the same one if she can ever decide where she wants it.
Woo! Hoo!!!
BTW, Lisa! How are you!!???!!?? Orion is getting so BIG!!!

I'm working on my star ideas still, as well as a couple other ideas... but no $$ right now, so I can only doodle.
What are you getting? The sweetpeas or the infinity symbol? Or something else entirely? :wink

SM-- When did Orionturn 1?? Man, it feels like he was born yesterday!
I'm holding off on the infinity symbol till we don't live with my parents. The sweetpeas are later too. So, what am I getting??
Well.... I'm getting a trinity symbol. I have a few in mind... here are some links to possible designs...
I'd like have a variation of one. I want it to be "mine". kwim?
The planis that eventually across the bottom will be "Benjamin" the left side "Tracy", the right side "Bryce" forming a circle. But I'll have to have it done in stages. The trinity is first.
Do you have any good sites for me to look at ideas for coloring? I jsut can't find anything good on the net and I know its out there but I can't find it!
Also, anyone thought about my offer? I need someone to design me a tat. I know what I want but I need someone to draw it. I want music that looks swirly and kinda whimsical (the best I can find to explain it). I know what song I want to be the notes. Then at the and of the tat I want the notes and staff to kinda "fall apart" I was originally thinking across the samll of my back but now I'm thinking a larger work.
The tat I'm getting this week is going on my left shoulder blade and the sweetpeas are going on my right shoulder blade. I was thinking maybe the music going down the middle of my back (again swirly and whimsical) and going across my lower back where it begins to break up. Like I said, I have an idea of what I want just not the ability to draw it.

The last link the circle that is ont he outside is the same design that surrounds that tat that dh is getting in the spring. I'm not sureI like the circle if I'm going to encircle it with the boys names too. Whatcha think?? I think I like the longer thinner looking symbol.
Millie Ivy
09-19-2004, 08:59 AM
Megan, I love the trinity! Those links were some really pretty designs too. I really like the first and last. Have fun getting inked!!!
Lisa, I just checked out your bday link for Orion, and he is so beautiful! He is such a cutie....
I got an orbital ring in my ear last night. I already had my cartilidge pierced from forever ago, very basic, but I had him stretch it just a teeny bit-pierce again right next to it up at the top and I got an orbital put in. It is very cool. I wasn't going to get anything done last night (I was going with my best friend to get her tat done) but I have been wanting this done, and was bored....
I should really do pictures.....
its_our_family
09-19-2004, 12:31 PM
You should take pics! I've been debating on what to get in my left ear. I'm thinking conch.
So, my tats have been changed slightly... I'm still getting the same thins but changing the placement. I want my music tat to be a alrger work across my back, starting at my left shoulder balde and swirling down to my lower back.
My trinity is going on the right shoulder balde and my sweetpeaas are going on my breast. I want a tat on my breast but couldn't figure out what. Dh was like, why not get the sweetpeas there. He thinking was, tht the blossoms symbolize our lost babes and to me one of the most awesme things in mife is bfing a newborn. I never had the chance to bf my babes but this way I bring them to me. I think its an awwesome concept and I'm going for it!
Now to pick the trinity design. Thanks for the input!

Ok, so my dh started work today. he is at orientation and then goes to training. Anyway, he is sitting in there bored as can be and he noticed the guy beside him. He is covered in piercings and tats. He notices the guys leg. He has an awesome tat of his parents. So, Benjamin asks him where he had his work down. They get to talking and we are going to go check ou the guys shop tonight.
He said the man has good prices too. But here is the neat part.
Guess which celebrity has a tat done by this man. Any ideas??
Have you ever seen the tv show Pimp My Ride? Do you ever listen to rap (and you don't have to admit it either)?
Xzibit! There is a pic of him in the middle of the work in the guys portfolio. He tat'ed in CA for awhile but got tired of it. So, he moved back to his home town here in SW OH!!
I hope the guy is as good as Ben said that leg work is. Maybe he can help design my back tat!

Yeah, I've had lots of medical people react to my tattoos. I don't mind usually--the vast majority of the time they are stunned at the quality of the work and the beauty of the art. I think they see a lot of garbage work.
The only time it bothers me is when I'm in the ER, say, and the person starts going on and on and asking lots of questions right away. I always want to say "Hey, how 'bout we get me out of this crippling pain first. Then I'd be happy to entertain your thoughts on my body!" :LOL
